Doesn't sound like she was surprised. Australian singer Firerose was in the news quite a bit last year during her messy - and very public - divorce from country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. The couple had married back in 2023, when she was 34 years old and the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer was 62. But the marriage didn't last long, because in June it was revealed that Billy Ray had filed for divorce, asking the court to annul their 7-month marriage based on fraud. Firerose later accused Billy Ray of filing for divorce the day before she was scheduled to undergo a planned double mastectomy, while Billy Ray claimed that Firerose had racked up over $100,000 in credit card bills after he filed for divorce. Both parties claimed that the other was abusive, with Firerose releasing audio of Billy Ray berating her and calling her a "fucking selfish bitch." She also claimed that the country star cut her off from her family, and forced her to ask for permission to send texts or use a car. For his part, Billy Ray released notes that Firerose had written to him after the divorce was filed showing that she wanted to reconcile their relationship, and accused his younger wife of trying to take over his life and career while using his last name for her own gain. And that's just the short version of it all. The divorce was finalized in August, with Billy Ray releasing a statement claiming the whole marriage was a "scam." “This has been absolutely the most crazy insane scam I have ever heard of. Let alone the fact I’m right in the center and basically the target of the scheme. It’s unfortunate it played out this way. Not only was it a web of lies that put me in physical danger, it was a matter of the heart. Love is blind, that’s for sure.” But it seems that Firerose is feeling a little vindicated after Billy Ray's disastrous performance at the Liberty Ball on Monday night. Billy Ray was clearly lip synching during much of the performance at the inaugural ball for President Donald Trump, but when he was singing live, his voice was gravely and nearly unrecognizable. And then it appeared that his equipment malfunctioned, sending Billy Ray into a rant as he asked for tech staff to assist. Afterwards, fans openly questioned whether Billy Ray was drunk or on drugs, though he released a statement yesterday blaming the whole thing on the tech issues: “I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not. I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me. I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says ‘you’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell. I was there for the people and we had a blast. That’s called rock and roll!” But last night, Billy Ray's adopted son, Trace Cyrus, shared an open note to his father on Instagram, saying that he was unrecognizable and begging him to get help: "You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it. Just like I showed up for you at mamaws funeral when you didn’t expect me to I’m still here right now. As I write this with tears in my eyes I hope you realize this message only comes from a place of love and also fear that the world may lose you far too soon. I love you Dad. We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol. Guess what? I feel amazing.. I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help. You know how to reach me. Till that day comes I will continue to pray for you." And now his ex-wife is speaking out too. Firerose released a statement to Page Six, claiming that his behavior is a glimpse of what she had to deal with during their marriage: “What’s being seen in public now reflects much of what I experienced in private during our relationship. It’s very sad to see those same struggles continue for him, but I’m glad the truth is coming to light — for his potential good because healing is only possible when you confront the truth and accept there’s a problem.” It seems that Billy Ray is estranged from much of his family at this point, and obviously he's no longer married, so hopefully there's still somebody in his life that he trusts who can get him the help that it seems like he needs.

Tyler Childers has a way with crafting some of the best country songs on the planet... then never releasing them on an album. When it comes time to put together a record, Timmy Tyler Childers becomes very selective with what's included. That's a testament to the legendary albums that he's already put out in his career, like Country Squire and Purgatory. He hails from the hills of Eastern Kentucky, and he's helping to keep both the bluegrass and Appalachian sound alive. I say that only to make this point: Tyler Childers is very specific with what he does as an artist, yet he appeals to the masses. It's a really interesting situation that - as I sit here right now - I simply cannot compare to anyone else in music. The authenticity of Childers' catalogue helps draw in fans even without getting mainstream attention. And it's his stellar songwriting and signature, Appalachian twang that makes the Tyler Childers faithful that much more faithful. People that love Tyler Childers are always waiting for new music from the Kentucky native, and I think that's why his unreleased music collection has a life of its own online. One song that never made it to an album is a little love ballad called "Redneck Romeo." It's believed that Childers penned this one sometime in his early career when he was driving from his hometown of Lawrence County, Kentucky to the "big city" of Lexington to play shows. And fans online speculate that the woman this song is written about is the same fling that his other unreleased song "Jersey Giant" focuses on. The opening verses of the track make it pretty clear that he was singing about driving back and forth from Lawrence and Lexington: "Lexington's a city But it ain’t so big it freaks me out And if I need a breather I can hit the parkway Be home before the bars all close And drink away the lies she told And think about the days" There's a theory that both "Redneck Romeo" and "Jersey Giant" never saw the light of day (at least on an album) because they were written about someone other than Childers' wife, Senora May. And if that's the case, I don't blame Childers. After all, I'd probably take "Lady May" over any of his unreleased material. That being said, the chorus of "Redneck Romeo" is Timmy at his best, and it told the story of some immature, young love that we can all assume had some real life inspiration: "She was a few rides shy of rodeo queen High school lovin' in a badass Jeep Far from the eyes of a watchful town Her mama didn't need to know Good corn liquor to shake this cold And good hot lovin’ on a gravel road Juliet, won't you crawl outside your window And dance in the arms of your redneck Romeo?" Sometimes a song is just meant to be a free agent, you know? Would having an official studio recording of “Redneck Romeo” help or hurt the song’s legacy? I’d argue that the secretive, exists-only-on-the-internet nature of the song only helps the lore. And most importantly, a great song will always find a way into the ears (and stuck in the heads) of music fans.
