President Trump Announces Timeline For 25% Tariff On Canada, Mexico

President Trump told reporters on Thursday that he will impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico. It will go into effect on Saturday, February 1st. “I’ll be putting the tariff of 25% on Canada and separately 25% on Mexico,” Trump said. “Those tariffs may or may not rise with time,” he added. WATCH: Trump announces 25 percent tariffs for Mexico and Canada pic.twitter.com/QqcUp4dm9K — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) January 30, 2025 Trump said he’ll decide on Thursday if the tariff will include oil. Per Reuters: U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would soon decide whether to exclude Canadian and Mexican oil imports from the 25% tariffs that he has vowed to impose on Saturday on the countries’ products. “We may or may not. We’re going to make that determination probably tonight,” Trump said about whether he would impose tariffs on Canadian and Mexican oil. He added that this would partly depend on prices and on whether the two countries “treat us properly.” Trump has set a Saturday deadline to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada to push the two largest U.S. trading partners to take action to halt illegal migrants and shipments of fentanyl from crossing their borders into the U.S. But Trump on Thursday said the North American duties would be imposed “for a number of reasons” and said the tariff level “may or may not rise with time.” “That’s coming on the 1st, Saturday,” Trump said. WATCH: Reporter: tariffs on Canada and Mexico that's 25% coming this Saturday? Donald Trump: that's coming on the (February) 1st. Reporter: but no oil tariffs? Donald Trump: no I don't…you said that I didn't say it. We will make that determination probably tonight…depends on what… pic.twitter.com/CJRUFX8qoc — Kirk Lubimov (@KirkLubimov) January 30, 2025 From the Associated Press: Trump said his decision will be based on whether the price of oil charged by the two trading partners is fair, although the basis of his threatened tariffs pertains to stopping illegal immigration and the smuggling of chemicals used for fentanyl. The risk of tariffs on Canadian and Mexican oil could undermine Trump’s repeated pledge to lower overall inflation by reducing energy costs. Costs associated with tariffs could be passed along to consumers in the form of higher gasoline prices — an issue that Trump placed at the center of his Republican presidential campaign as he vowed to halve energy costs within one year. “One year from Jan. 20, we will have your energy prices cut in half all over the country,” Trump said at a 2024 town hall in Pennsylvania. AP VoteCast, an extensive survey of the electorate, found that 80% of voters identified gas prices as a concern. Trump won nearly 6 in 10 voters who said they worried about prices at the pump. The United States imported almost 4.6 million barrels of oil daily from Canada in October and 563,000 barrels from Mexico, according to the Energy Information Administration. U.S. daily production during that month averaged nearly 13.5 million barrels a day.

Heartbreaking! Laken Riley’s Mother Speaks About the Laken Riley Act

President Trump’s first legislation was The Laken Riley Act. It’s a good act and will help Tom Homan as he rids the country of criminal aliens. This legislation mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants who have been arrested for theft-related crimes. It also includes provisions allowing state attorneys general to sue if the Department of […] The post Heartbreaking! Democrats Shill For Big Pharma In RFK Jr. Confirmation Hearing

Democrats Shill For Big Pharma In RFK Jr. Confirmation Hearing

There’s a civil trial going on right now in the state of California that hasn’t gotten much attention at all. For the most part, the corporate press doesn’t want to talk about it, probably because it would upset some of their biggest advertisers. But if you have any interest in learning more about how the alleged “science” concerning vaccines actually works in this country, it’s one of the most important cases that’s ever been tried. I’m talking about a product liability lawsuit that’s underway against the pharmaceutical giant Merck. The litigation relates to allegations that Merck concealed serious side effects of its “Gardasil” vaccine, which promised to protect people from getting HPV — a virus that can lead to cervical cancer in women. Merck of course denies the allegations, and the jury hasn’t returned a verdict yet. But even without a verdict, the fact that this case has made it to trial, in and of itself, is worth talking about. Concerns about the Gardasil vaccine have been widespread for nearly two decades, since it was first introduced to the market. Here for example are two news clips from 2008 and 2009, related to the first version of the vaccine. Watch:   Put aside for a second whether Gardasil was indeed dangerous, or whether Merck lied in its advertising. Those are questions that I don’t pretend to be an authority on. That’s for a jury to decide. The really interesting question is why it took until 2025 for anyone to resolve, definitively, the question of whether this vaccine is actually as safe as advertised. The fact that the judge has allowed this case to go to trial means the allegations, at a minimum, probably aren’t frivolous. So how was this vaccine — which has been taken by countless people — allowed to escape this kind of serious scrutiny for so long?  WATCH: The Matt Walsh Show That fact alone — the existence of an information blackout on such an important vaccine — is of course just one of many harrowing, unexplained failures of the public health establishment in this country. If you pull up one of the complaints against Merck, which was filed by the law firm Wisner Baum, you’ll find a lot of other very disturbing allegations too. One woman, the main plaintiff in the case, alleges she’s been confined to a wheelchair since the age of 16 because of the vaccine.  There are also allegations that Merck paid doctors and nonprofits thousands of dollars to promote the vaccine, as well as claims that Merck lied about the vaccine’s contents. Normally, allegations like this never see the inside of a courthouse, because the pharmaceutical industry enjoys a broad liability shield. This case is a rare exception. I mention the lawsuit over the Gardasil vaccine because it came up yesterday during the confirmation hearings for Donald Trump’s nominee to be the next HHS secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. That’s because RFK Jr. worked with the law firm that brought the case against Merck, and he stands to benefit financially from the outcome. In other words, RFK Jr. played a role in finding the plaintiffs for this very rare, and very important lawsuit that’s currently in progress against Big Pharma. Here’s how Elizabeth Warren questioned Kennedy about it. Watch:   What’s extraordinary about this moment is that Warren has built her entire career around the lie that she’s a populist — or at least, someone who’s extremely skeptical of entrenched corporate power, particularly when it’s held by banks. But in this case, Warren is pretty much indistinguishable from a lawyer for Big Pharma. She’s berating RFK Jr. because he took Big Pharma to court over the HPV vaccine. And even though he’s stated that he won’t pursue any lawsuits while he’s in government, it’s not enough for her. She wants him to commit to renouncing lawsuits that he’s already participated in, or that he might pursue after leaving office. And he wouldn’t agree to that. I’m not going to speculate on Warren’s motivations. You can point to various campaign contributions she’s received from the pharmaceutical industry, as many people already have. Actually, on second thought, I am speculating that Elizabeth Warren is a bought and paid for shill for Big Pharma. Not speculating but outright accusing her of it. Still the truth is, this is a much larger problem than Elizabeth Warren. Throughout the hearing, RFK Jr. was repeatedly attacked by Democrats simply for questioning the safety and efficacy of various drugs that are widely prescribed. These are drugs we’re assured are effective, even though there are very real reasons to doubt that. And in particular, Kennedy was hit over his skepticism of SSRIs, in the most unfair and disingenuous way imaginable. Here’s Tina Smith of Minnesota, in one of the most egregious moments from this hearing:   RFK’s response at the end of that clip is obviously the right one. Remember the 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine? The shooter killed 18 people at a bowling alley and a bar. We still don’t know what, if any, drugs he was taking at the time of the incident. The same is true of the trans-identifying mass shooter here in Tennessee. The Tennessee Star has reported, citing a search warrant, that Vanderbilt had prescribed SSRIs to the shooter. But we don’t know if the shooter was actively taking those medications, because neither the police nor Vanderbilt will tell us. And therefore, it wouldn’t show up in any “studies” that purport to show how many mass shooters were on SSRIs. This is the norm, when it comes to these academic papers on SSRIs. And as I’ve previously discussed, there’s another way that these “studies” hide the number of mass shooters who are on SSRIs. Basically, they include inner city violence in their tally of mass shootings. So if a bunch of gang members in the South Side of Chicago shoot up a birthday party or something, that gets added to the tally of mass shootings. And because those kinds of shootings happen every day in places like Chicago — for reasons that have nothing to do with SSRIs, like turf disputes and so on — the authors of these studies can make it seem like SSRIs don’t cause mass shootings. But they’re really just obfuscating the central question by flooding the data set with unrelated shootings. The core question — which is whether SSRIs cause otherwise law-abiding young students to shoot their classmates — remains unresolved in medical literature. It’s not surprise and no secret that young angry males who grow up in the hood with no father figures and get involved in gangs and drug dealing by the age of 12 would turn to violence. There’s no mystery there. But there is a mystery as to why a child who has never been violent, who was not raised by a street gang, who is financially stable, would one day casually execute a dozen classmates for no reason that he can even articulate. Why is that happening? And why is it that so often these kids are on psychiatric medication? MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ NOW STREAMING ON DAILYWIRE+ There are definitely reasons to think SSRIs could play a role in this kind of violence. For one thing, you can look at the warning label on SSRIs, which states that the drugs can actually increase the risk of suicide and violent behavior in some cases. The drugmakers are telling us outright that these drugs can put violent thoughts into your head. They can make you want to lash out violently against yourself or other people. The pharmaceutical companies are telling us that directly. And yet when that thing happens, they will insist that the drug they said can cause it to happen, must not have caused it to happen. Or you can look at the studies that show that SSRIs can increase the risk of violence in people who aren’t depressed at all. A few years ago, for example, researchers in Denmark reviewed experiments going back to the 1960s. And they found that, when healthy volunteers — meaning, people with no mental health issues — were given antidepressants, the drugs doubled their risk of “suicidality and violence.” So why did that happen? Why might SSRIs make healthy people more violent? The honest answer is that we have no idea. Just a few years ago, we learned that there’s actually no clear link between low serotonin levels and depression. This was the central claim that supposedly justified the mass-adoption of SSRIs in this country, and it’s completely false. We have no idea what these drugs are actually doing. So maybe we should pump the brakes a bit. That’s what RFK tried to say yesterday. Here’s the response he got:   Usually, you expect that in a confirmation hearing, the worst thing that can happen is that the nominee says something disqualifying. But in this case, the senator said something disqualifying. Let me be extremely clear about this: If you need psychiatric drugs in order to function, then you are not fit to serve at the highest levels of government. You’re not qualified to teach elementary school students or operate heavy machinery, for that matter. You simply cannot claim that you’re competent to govern if you need to regularly take psychoactive substances. Am I saying that every lawmaker on anti-depressants should be removed from office? Yes, I am absolutely saying that. That should be common sense. More importantly, RFK is obviously right about SSRIs. When the peer-reviewed journal “Molecular Psychiatry” — one of the most prominent journals in the field — admits that depression isn’t actually caused by a serotonin imbalance, which is what happened in 2022, then it’s obviously worth taking a close look at a class of antidepressants that’s entitled, “Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors.” If a comprehensive review finds that we were wrong about these drugs for decades, then maybe we need some more information and studies before we prescribe them to millions of people — including children. But of course, this is a pattern in the healthcare industry. Drugs are approved all the time when they don’t actually work — at least not in any way that we understand. As RFK Jr. said yesterday, it was a similar story for Alzheimer’s drugs. Some of these drugs received a lot of funding and fast-track approvals, only to turn out to be completely useless. In one case, the data supporting these drugs was actually faked. Watch:   By this point you can probably tell that this hearing didn’t go very well for Democrats. Later on, they tried to attack him for pointing out that Lyme Disease has some very conspicuous origins. Apparently we’re supposed to think — post-COVID — that it’s an outlandish conspiracy theory to believe that Lyme Disease could possibly have anything to do with government labs injecting ticks with various exotic diseases. Then there was this moment, where one Democrat tried to make the point that RFK Jr. doesn’t believe that germs can cause disease. Then he refuted what she was saying, so she just “read it into the record” anyway. Watch:   These hearings are all like this. They’re not actually about getting any kind of thoughtful answer from the nominee. It’s all drive-by soundbites. It doesn’t even matter what he says. But even by this low standard, there was one moment in yesterday’s hearing that managed to stand out. This moment comes to us from Bernie Sanders. Sanders began by asking RFK Jr. whether healthcare is a human right, and he said no, because no one — especially gluttons or habitual smokers — is entitled to anyone else’s labor. And then Sanders resorted to berating RFK Jr. for his support of anti-vaccine apparel — specifically, anti-vaccine onesies. Behold one of the greatest moments in modern congressional history:   This is the level of seriousness that Democrats are applying to these confirmation hearings. They barely even mentioned gender ideology, or how RFK Jr. plans to end the castration of children in this country. They weren’t remotely interested in his call for more transparent and accurate data in modern medicine. Instead, one by one, Democrats ran interference for Big Pharma. They talked about anti-vax “onesies” and demanded that RFK stop bullying Merck. Democrats like to pretend that they stand against “corporate greed” and so on. But you simply cannot pretend to be an avenger for the working class standing against corrupt billionaires if you will also defend the pharmaceutical industry to your dying breath. There is no greater example of corporate greed than what we have seen from Big Pharma. This is an industry that we know for an absolute fact has pushed literal poison on people, by the millions, and done it all for no reason other than pure profit. This is the industry that supplies actual castration drugs to 13-year-olds. An industry that got millions of Americans hooked on anti-depressants on false pretenses, based on a belief in a chemical imbalance that doesn’t exist. There are dozens of other examples just like this. And they are all things that Democrats don’t want us to talk about — and have in fact attempted to forcibly prevent us from talking about. So whatever reservations conservatives have about RFK Jr., it’s very clear that he needs to be confirmed. We have a real opportunity to install someone who is skeptical of the junk science we’ve been relentlessly fed for decades, on everything from SSRIs to Alzheimer’s to gender ideology. And after yesterday’s debacle of a confirmation hearing, it’s clear we need to take this opportunity now, while we still have it.

Donald Trump Issues Executive Orders On Flight Safety, DEI Following Reagan Airport Tragedy

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on Thursday in the wake of a tragic plane and helicopter collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. His action comes after an Army helicopter and American Airlines Flight 5342 collided Wednesday night before crashing into the Potomac River. Authorities worked throughout the night to recover the bodies of the deceased, and said Thursday that there were no survivors out of the 67 people on both aircrafts. Trump’s first executive order appoints Chris Rochelau as deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. Rochelau will serve as the acting administrator since the administrator seat is currently vacant, the president’s staff secretary, Will Scharf, said at the signing. The president’s second executive action is titled: “Immediate Assessment of Aviation Safety.” It orders the Secretary of Transportation and the FAA administrator to “review all hiring decisions and changes to safety protocols made during the prior 4 years, and to take such corrective action as necessary to achieve uncompromised aviation safety, including the replacement of any individuals who do not meet qualification standards.” “This review shall include a systematic assessment of any deterioration in hiring standards and aviation safety standards and protocols during the Biden Administration,” the order notes. (Photo by Al Drago/Getty Images) Trump laid out in the executive action, as he did during Thursday’s press briefing, how former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden took steps to minimize merit and competence by prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the FAA. “The Obama Administration implemented a biographical questionnaire at the FAA to shift the hiring focus away from objective aptitude,” his executive action says. “During my first term, my Administration raised standards to achieve the highest standards of safety and excellence.  But the Biden Administration egregiously rejected merit-based hiring, requiring all executive departments and agencies to implement dangerous ‘diversity equity and inclusion’ tactics, and specifically recruiting individuals with ‘severe intellectual’ disabilities in the FAA.” “On my second day in office, I ordered an immediate return to merit-based recruitment, hiring, and promotion, elevating safety and ability as the paramount standard,” the order reads. “Yesterday’s devastating accident tragically underscores the need to elevate safety and competence as the priority of the FAA.” Trump stressed to reporters on Thursday that though it is unclear what role DEI measures played in the tragic plane crash, it is extremely important to his administration that employees be chosen on merit and competency. “We want the most competent people,” he said. “We don’t care what race they are. We want the most competent people, especially in those positions. You’re talking about extremely complex things, and if they don’t have a great brain, a great power of the brain, they’re not going to be very good at what they do and bad things will happen.” “All I’m talking about is competence,” he continued. “And we want, in that particular position, we have to have the most competent people in our country, because we’re talking about lives. Now, it may or may not have to do, but I don’t like that the helicopter was at the exact same level as the airplane. The helicopter should’ve been 1,000 feet or 500 feet above it, or something below it. The plane was at 300-400 feet.” Trump described the fatal crash as “tragic” but preventable, asking: “Do you blame it on the air traffic controller too in addition to the pilots? They should’ve seen it. I would’ve thought they should’ve seen it.” He also shared that he will be meeting with some of the families of the deceased.

Solar shines brighter than coal in the EU

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM For the first time in history, solar power has overtaken coal in the European Union’s electricity mix. In 2024, solar energy generated 11 percent of the EU’s electricity, while coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel, fell below 10 percent. This milestone, highlighted in Ember’s European Electricity Review, signals a “deep transformation” in the EU’s power sector, where renewables are pushing fossil fuels into decline. “Fossil fuels are losing their grip on EU energy,” says Dr. Chris Rosslowe, senior analyst and lead author of the report. “At the start of the European Green Deal in 2019, few thought the EU’s energy transition could be where it is today. Wind and solar are pushing coal to the margins and forcing gas into structural decline.” Fossil fuels fade as renewables rise The fall of coal is part of a broader trend. Fossil fuel generation supplied just 29 percent of the EU’s electricity in 2024, down from 39 percent in 2019. Gas generation also declined for the fifth consecutive year, while wind surpassed gas for the second year running, generating 17 percent of the EU’s electricity compared to gas’s 16 percent. In contrast, renewables soared. Solar and wind combined with hydropower to account for 47 percent of EU power generation in 2024, up from 34 percent just five years ago. Without the expansion of wind and solar since 2019, the EU would have needed an additional 92 billion cubic meters of gas and 55 million tonnes of coal, costing €59 billion ($61.6 billion), analysts estimate. “The EU is striding closer towards a clean energy future powered by homegrown wind and solar,” says Dr. Beatrice Petrovich, a senior analyst at Ember. “This new energy system will reduce the bloc’s vulnerability to fossil price shocks, tackle the climate crisis, and deliver affordable energy for its households and companies.” Solar growth powers EU countries Solar power’s rise in the EU has been remarkable. The bloc’s solar fleet expanded by 66 gigawatts in 2024, equivalent to over 450,000 panels installed daily, leading to a 22 percent annual increase in solar generation. Solar is growing in every EU country, with 16 nations generating more than 10 percent of their electricity from solar power in 2024. Hungary, Greece, and Spain led the way, with solar contributing 25 percent, 22 percent, and 21 percent of their electricity, respectively. Hungary’s solar surge stems from favorable support schemes, which have spurred a substantial increase in solar installations over the past two years. However, maintaining this momentum will require enhanced battery storage and grid upgrades. “The country will need an accelerated rollout of batteries and an enhanced grid to help its consumers fully benefit from abundant solar production,” Dr. Petrovich explains. In the Netherlands and Hungary, solar met more than 80 percent of total electricity demand during peak production hours on over 70 days in 2024. Challenges on the horizon While the EU’s electricity transition has progressed faster than expected, challenges remain. The wind sector, essential for meeting 2030 climate targets, faces a significant “delivery gap.” According to the report, the EU needs to add an average of 34 gigawatts of wind capacity annually between 2025 and 2030, yet current projections estimate only 19 to 22 gigawatts per year. This gap is most pronounced in offshore wind, where project delays have led several governments to lower their 2030 ambitions. “Further progress cannot be taken for granted,” warns Dr. Rosslowe. “Delivery needs to be accelerated, particularly in the wind sector, which has faced unique challenges.” A secure, flexible energy future Experts emphasize the importance of flexibility in adapting the energy system to the realities of renewables. “We now need more storage and more smart electrification in heating, transport, and industries,” says Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe. Despite the challenges, the achievements of the past five years inspire optimism. “With continued drive and commitment, challenges can be overcome, and a more secure energy future be achieved,” says Dr. Rosslowe. The EU’s energy revolution is well underway, with solar and wind leading the charge. As fossil fuels fade and renewables rise, the bloc is building a cleaner, more resilient power system—one panel and one turbine at a time. The post Solar shines brighter than coal in the EU first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

Breaking beer barriers: how Muschicraft is brewing feminism into every pint

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM What happens when you mix craft beer, feminist ideals, and a dash of defiance? You get Muschicraft, the world’s first feminist beer, brewed in Vienna by artist and social worker Sophie Tschannett. With its cheeky vulva logo and a mission to shatter gender norms, Muschicraft, which translates to “vaginal power” in English, is far more than a pale ale with notes of melon and grapefruit—it’s a statement in a bottle. “Everything surrounding this drink is masculine and heterosexual: the executives are men, the people who make it are men, and above all, the advertising is almost exclusively focused on men,” Tschannett says, reflecting on the male-dominated beer industry. Muschicraft was born out of her desire to create a beer for everyone—women, trans and queer people, and yes, even men. But Muschicraft doesn’t just sip from the glass of equality—it guzzles it. Part of its profits supports feminist projects like Austria’s Association of Autonomous Women’s Shelters and Women for Women, making each pint a toast to progress. Illegal brewing and broken rules In 2023, Muschicraft’s bold vision took another rebellious turn. Partnering with Berlin’s Vagabund Brewery, Tschannett launched “the most illegal beer.” This new label is brewed in deliberate defiance of archaic, misogynistic laws from 50 countries. The violations range from absurd to outright oppressive. Some countries prohibit women from producing alcohol or working night shifts. Others ban them from lifting barrels, cleaning machinery, or even driving delivery trucks. In Wyoming, Tschannett highlights a particularly bizarre rule: “A woman who is drinking is not allowed within five feet of a bar,” she says. “It’s unlikely to be enforced, but it’s especially ridiculous.” The project, a collaboration with the German communications agency HeimatTBWA, is designed to spotlight lingering gender inequality around the world. “Our mission was to show that gender inequality still exists,” Tschannett says. By literally breaking these outdated laws, Muschicraft draws attention to the systemic barriers women face, even in industries as seemingly inclusive as craft beer. Reclaiming the vulva One of Muschicraft’s most striking features is its vulva-shaped logo—a bold statement meant to normalize a natural part of the human body. Yet the logo has sparked controversy, with critics calling it offensive. “Many people find it offensive, even though other companies’ advertising is completely sexist,” Tschannett laments. The design aims to challenge societal taboos and distance the vulva from its often hypersexualized portrayal in media. “After all, it’s a natural part of the body, and there’s no reason to be ashamed of it,” she explains. Tschannett admits the design is intentionally provocative. “Sometimes, you still need to provoke to draw attention to certain issues,” she says. Feminist beer: a movement in a bottle Muschicraft isn’t just a beer—it’s a movement. By blending craft brewing with a feminist ethos, Tschannett has created a product that challenges gender norms, supports equality, and encourages important conversations. With every sip, Muschicraft asks us to reconsider the assumptions baked into the world of beer and beyond. As Tschannett’s bold branding and even bolder mission suggest, sometimes a pint can be more than just a pint—it can be progress, which we believe is something worth toasting! The post Breaking beer barriers: how Muschicraft is brewing feminism into every pint first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

2 US Service Academies End Minor in Diversity and Inclusion

THE CENTER SQUARE—West Point Military Academy and the Air Force Academy have both ended their “Diversity and Inclusion Studies” minors. As late as Jan. 8, West Point, based in New York, offered its diversity, equity, and inclusion minor, while as of Jan. 9 the Air Force Academy, based in Colorado, still offered its DEI minor, according to internet archives. Currently, a minor in “Diversity and Inclusion Studies” is no longer listed on either service academy’s website. Around the same time the DEI minors disappeared, President Donald Trump ended all DEI programs in federal agencies via an executive order. When asked why the Air Force Academy ended its minor, Lt. Col. Brian Maguire, deputy director of strategic communications, told The Center Square that “the Department of Defense will fully execute and implement all directives outlined in the Executive Orders issued by the President.” The Air Force Academy is a part of the Department of Defense. Maguire said the Department of Defense will ensure that the directives “are carried out with utmost professionalism, efficiency, and in alignment with national security objectives.” When reached for comment, West Point media relations told The Center Square it did not have any information yet but would provide it when available. West Point’s Diversity and Inclusion Studies minor stated it existed to “expose cadets to varied perspectives & methodologies for understanding and studying the humanities and social sciences.” “The minor draws on courses in multiple departments and offers cadets a framework for critically and creatively thinking about the broader impact of diversity and inclusion at the individual, organizational, societal, and/or global levels,” the minor’s description said. Some listed required courses in the minor were “Politics – Race, Gender, Sexuality,” “Topics in Gender History,” and “Social Inequality.” The Air Force Academy’s DEI minor stated that “the Academy must cultivate leaders who not only understand and recognize the importance of diversity, but who actively create inclusive environments that leverage this diversity toward mission success.” “Diversity of thought” drives the Air Force and Space Force’s “ability to integrate, adapt, and innovate to meet future challenges,” the minor claimed. Diversity of thought is explained as “enabled by Airmen with unique backgrounds, cultures, demographics, identities, experiences, etc.” Those who complete the minor are said to be able to “identify and critically assess explanations for construction of specific categories/groups such as sex/gender; race/ethnicity/nation; socio-economic class; religious affiliation; age; (dis)ability; sexual orientation; and cultures.” Neither the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, nor the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy currently offer minors in DEI of any sort as evidenced by their websites. Other minors offered by West Point are “American Foundations,” “Nuclear Science,” and “Terrorism Studies.” Other minors offered by the Air Force Academy are “Space Warfighting,” “Sustainability,” and “American Studies.” George Leef, the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal director of external relations, told The Center Square that service academies “should not have ‘diversity’ studies.” The Martin Center is an “educational nonprofit focused on public policy” for higher education in North Carolina and the nation at large, according to its website. Leef said service academies, “like all colleges and universities, should teach bodies of knowledge.” “Courses on ‘diversity’ are only based on opinions,” Leef said. “There’s nothing wrong in discussing those opinions, but they should not be central to a course.” “DEI courses inject politics and almost inevitably undermine freedom of expression because the professors are prone to be so zealous that they can’t tolerate disagreement,” Leef said.
