National Public Radio (NPR) has suspended Senior Business Editor Uri Berliner after he publicly accused the network of espousing left-wing bias with an essay that began a media firestorm. Last week‚ Berliner received a letter that informed him of a five-day suspension without pay beginning Friday‚ according to a report by NPR’s media correspondent David Folkenflik. NPR told Berliner he failed to follow the network’s rules and get approval for outside work for other news outlets after his essay for The Free Press and follow-up interviews. Berliner was also accused of publicly releasing proprietary information about audience demographics that NPR considered confidential‚ per the report. The letter‚ which was called a “final warning‚” said Berliner would be fired for another policy violation. Berliner‚ a dues-paying member of NPR’s newsroom union‚ told Folkenflik that he would not appeal the punishment. He claimed the figures discussed in his essay “were essentially marketing material. If they had been really good‚ they probably would have distributed them and sent them out to the world.” Berliner conceded that he did not get permission to speak with Folkenflik‚ but said he thought it would be “extraordinary” if he were fired for speaking to an NPR journalist. The Free Press published the essay on Tuesday last week in which Berliner argued NPR “lost America’s trust” with its increasingly liberal bent. His critique touched on topics related to former President Donald Trump‚ NPR’s COVID coverage‚ reporting on transgender issues‚ audience figures‚ the network’s own level of diversity‚ and more. Berliner additionally wrote about how he tried to make some of his concerns known internally. He said no one ever “trashed” him‚ but he was repeatedly brushed off and nothing changed. In the public backlash that followed the essay‚ Trump demanded that NPR’s funding be cut. Despite his critique‚ Berliner said “defunding” was not the way to address the “missteps” he outlined. NPR’s chief executive of less than a month‚ Katherine Maher‚ lashed out at the “deeply simplistic” and “profoundly disrespectful‚ hurtful‚ and demeaning” essay without mentioning Berliner’s name. After Berliner’s essay was published‚ old tweets from Maher resurfaced that displayed her personal views in favor of liberal causes‚ fueling more criticism‚ particularly from the Right. Maher called Trump a “racist” in a 2018 post that has since been deleted and shared a photo of herself wearing a hat touting President Joe Biden’s campaign in November of 2020. Berliner said the posts indicate Maher is the “opposite” of the kind of leader NPR needs to be “unifying and bring more people into the tent and have a broader perspective on‚ sort of‚ what America is all about.” Maher released a statement that said “everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen” in America. The report said NPR’s chief news executive‚ Edith Chapin‚ announced late Monday that Executive Editor Eva Rodriguez would lead monthly coverage review meetings. Berliner reportedly said he welcomed the announcement but would reserve judgment until those meetings happen.

The Biden administration on Monday confirmed the identity of an ISIS-K suicide bomber who killed several U.S. service members and scores of Afghans in 2021. The Department of Defense (DOD) identified the terrorist as Abdul Rahman al-Logari. Al-Logari detonated a bomb outside of Hamid Karzai International Airport’s Abbey Gate in the final days of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan‚ killing 170 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members. “With access to analysis from across the intelligence community‚ we were able to identify the Abbey Gate person-borne IED bomber as Abdul Rahman al-Logari‚ an [ISIS-K] member since 2016‚” an Army official from the joint supplemental review team said‚ according to the DOD.   The DOD identified al-Logari for the first time in a supplemental review of an investigation into the terror attack on Abbey Gate. U.S. Army Central Command (CENTCOM) completed and released the results of the review on Monday‚ confirming al-Logari’s identity.  Al-Logari was one of thousands of prisoners and detainees released from Bagram Air Base by the Taliban after U.S. personnel evacuated the base in July 2021 ahead of the full military withdrawal. The Taliban set al-Logari free in mid-August 2021. The ISIS-K terrorist carried out his deadly attack at Abbey Gate on August 26. As the U.S. completed its withdrawal from Hamid Karzai International Airport‚ the U.S. military turned over security for Kabul to the Taliban. The U.S. evacuated Afghanistan in a rush to hit a deadline at the end of August. U.S. officials were concerned about volatility in the region and what the Taliban may do if the U.S. did not meet the deadline. In its haste‚ the U.S. abandoned billions of dollars worth of equipment in Afghanistan. The DOD said the review did not change the original finding of the report that the attack on Abbey Gate was not preventable. ISIS-K had multiple suicide bombers available and would have been able to carry out the attack with or without al-Logari. “This supports the conclusion that the attack at Abbey Gate was not preventable at the tactical level‚” an official said‚ according to the DOD. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) is chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and has led the House investigation into the Abbey Gate terror attack. The Biden administration opened the supplemental review into Abbey Gate in response to testimony given to McCaul’s committee. I am absolutely determined to see this investigation through to completion and will leave no stone unturned‚” McCaul stated.

Defense attorneys for the man accused of killing two Delphi‚ Indiana‚ teens in 2017 don’t want jurors to hear his recorded police interrogation‚ saying he was never read his Miranda Rights. In a motion filed on Monday‚ defense attorneys Andrew Baldwin and Bradley Rozzi argued that their client‚ Richard Allen‚ had his civil rights violated during that interrogation‚ Fox 59 reported. In addition to not reading him his Miranda Rights‚ the attorneys argue that Indiana State Police officials lied to Allen during that interrogation. Allen‚ 50‚ has been charged with kidnapping and killing 13-year-old Abby Williams and 14-year-old Libby German‚ whose bodies were found off a hiking trail in Delphi‚ Indiana‚ back in 2017. The latest filing claims that on October 13‚ 2022‚ Allen and his wife drove to the police station to pick up a car that had been seized nearly two weeks earlier as part of the investigation into Allen’s involvement in the teens’ deaths. When they arrived‚ the defense attorneys say‚ Allen was separated from his wife and questioned without being read his Miranda Rights or told he was free to leave at any time or that the interview was being recorded‚ Fox reported. Baldwin and Rozzi also argue that the beginning of the recorded interview either never existed or has disappeared in the years since. “In this case‚ either (a) the camera was only turned on after they were already minutes into the interview‚” the latest filing says. “Or (b) the camera was recording the entire time‚ but the beginning of the interview was later edited out before being turned over to defense.” Due to these issues‚ the defense attorneys say they don’t want jurors at Allen’s upcoming trial to hear the interview. Included in the interview are statements from police claiming to have expert testimony linking Allen to evidence found at the crime scene and a trooper telling him‚ “You’re guilty‚ and I know it‚ and I’m gonna f***ing prove it.” The filing comes just days after Baldwin and Rozzi requested to have Allen’s prison confessions suppressed from the jury as well. The attorneys alleged that Allen did not make the comments voluntarily and was mentally ill at the time. Rozzi said in a motion to suppress statements filed Thursday that prison officials put inmates at Allen’s cell door and had them keep logs of everything Allen said and did. Further‚ Rozzi said Allen “slipped into a state of psychosis plagued with grossly disorganized‚ delusional‚ paranoid and highly dysfunctional behavior” while he was in prison. This behavior included “periods of not sleeping for days‚ paranoia‚ stripping off his clothes‚ drinking toilet water‚ covering himself with and eating his own feces‚ and many other socially unacceptable behaviors.” The defense attorneys also argued that Allen’s alleged confessions don’t even align with the evidence from the crime scene‚ meaning they can’t be accurate.
