Catholics Should Be Wary of These Media Traps During Election Season

The following is excerpted from the chapter “Fake News: How to Navigate the Media” of the new book “For God, Country, & Sanity: How Catholics Can Save America” by Mary Margaret Olohan. It is a truth universally acknowledged that pretty much no one trusts “the news” anymore. You can’t really blame the American public for not believing the stories that fill their news feeds when so many legacy newsrooms are filled with activist reporters masquerading as unbiased journalists. We live in a time when men claim to be women and get away with it, when the innocence of our children is flaunted, when the lives of our unborn children are thrown away, and when government institutions are comfortable attempting to dictate our every move. And mainstream, legacy, liberal media—whatever you want to call it—they are instrumental in forwarding every one of these causes. More alarmingly, they have been instrumental in deciding the course of our elections, at the local, state, and national levels. Too often, the media are the mouthpiece of the ruling political class, rather than the communicator of facts and truth. And yet we know that truth exists. There are real, indisputable facts about the events going on in our country and in our world. We also know that we deserve access to the truth about our politicians and the workings of the state. What’s more, I’d argue that Catholics have a duty to understand the political world around them, and at the very least, the motivations and determinations of the politicians for whom they are voting. So, what news sources should Catholic voters be consuming? How do we know who to trust? … News reporting should be just the facts: What happened, when, where, how, and why. It should include dates, locations, and quotes from people on both sides of the aisle. It shouldn’t include opinion or even that many adjectives! Analysis examines news reporting and draws conclusions from it. This type of writing is largely based on the facts at hand, but the writer’s opinion on the topic is usually pretty clear. Commentary writing is a more in-depth, opinionated analysis of something that has already been published. It’s more opinionated than analysis and often written by commentators who regularly write or appear on television. Op-eds, short for “opposite the editorial page,” are opinion pieces written to sway someone to a particular point of view. … When it comes to trustworthy news reporting, every single claim in a story should be backed up with a source. Asking yourself “According to whom?” will help you figure out if the sentence is actually sourced properly. The more you ask yourself this, the more you will notice where the sourcing is coming from, perhaps police, local authorities, local government, federal authorities, the White House, a spokesperson, etc. Pretty much any news outlet that you can think of leans left or right—very, very rarely do they successfully play it down the middle … . For example, The Washington Post regularly uses the phrase “fetal cardiac activity” to describe an unborn baby’s heartbeat. This language, and other language, mimics the language of pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League—language intended to downplay the humanity of an unborn child. The Washington Post also uses the nebulous phrase “gender-affirming care,” an activist phrase intended to gloss over the realities of what that care actually is: irreversible transgender surgeries, hormones, and puberty blockers, even for minors … . … Many media outlets take their cues from progressive activist groups that quite literally tell them how to talk about controversial topics like irreversible transgender procedures, even surgeries, for kids … Some media outlets and their reporters purposefully propagate false narratives. This is best exemplified through the media’s treatment of #METOO accuser Christine Blasey Ford and her allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, when a slew of reporters across mainstream media breathlessly reported on stories that ended up being completely false … . The 2024 election cycle will almost certainly be filled with more of the same: half-baked truths, salacious stories, and outright lies. It is incredibly important for voters not to jump the gun and to be responsible with what news sources they trust and what news sources they disseminate among their friends and on social media. Resist the urge to formulate opinions based on headlines—if a headline will impact your opinion on a topic, it certainly seems worthwhile to read the story and ascertain what is or isn’t true about the information you just learned. And finally, a little plug for my fellow writers and news outlets, when you find news sources that you trust and appreciate, pay for their subscriptions (if you have the means). This helps keep them afloat and allows them to fight the good fight for the truth. The post Catholics Should Be Wary of These Media Traps During Election Season appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Liberal Donor Organizes Coalition to Fund Voter Mobilization

An influential left-of-center donor’s charity has launched an initiative compelling other philanthropies to pour money into voter-mobilization efforts for this fall’s elections. Democracy Fund, founded and funded by liberal philanthropist Pierre Omidyar, has rallied 174 organizations and individuals pledging to expedite disbursement of grants related to get-out-the-vote operations and other efforts. The pledge called on signatories either to make the bulk of their election-related donations by the end of April, to “move up” disbursements scheduled for later in the year, or to streamline grant approval processes. Alex Soros’ Open Society Foundations, the liberal dark money giant Arabella Advisors, Tides, and Democrat megadonor Susan Pritzker are among the major left-of-center philanthropic players to sign the pledge. Omidyar, who founded eBay and has become a prolific investor, is worth over $10.9 billion, according to Bloomberg. Omidyar gave roughly $1.2 billion through various charitable arms to an array of primarily left-of-center causes between 2004 and 2020, according to a Capital Research Center report. In 2020, Omidyar gave the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a sprawling Democrat-aligned political outfit, $45 million to support its Civic Action Fund project, a now-defunct voter-turnout initiative that focused on “empower[ing] those typically underrepresented in our democratic process” by ensuring they voted in 2020. The group collaborated with liberal politicians and activists to organize local get-out-the-vote efforts targeting low-propensity voters, according to Influence Watch. In explaining his donation to Civic Action Fund, Omidyar cited the importance of “supporting local voter outreach and engagement of young people and people of color.” Young people and minority voters favor the Democratic Party by considerable margins, with voters 18 to 29 and all nonwhite constituencies favoring President Joe Biden by double digits in 2020, according to a CNN exit poll. Civic Action Fund was active in 14 states, including the key states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, during the 2020 election season, according to its website. The group had staffers with ties to notable Democrats such as former President Barack Obama and former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, according to Influence Watch. Many of the signatories of Democracy Fund’s “All by April” pledge have clear ideological slants. Alex Soros, son of influential liberal financier George Soros, has described himself as “more political” than his father. Arabella manages a network of nonprofits that pour tens of millions into liberal causes every year. Tides comprises a variety of organizational arms including one of the largest pass-through organizations for liberal philanthropists. And Pritzker has donated millions to Democratic and otherwise left-of-center political committees. Arabella’s nonprofit network and the Soros family’s philanthropic ventures have dropped large sums on election spending. Arabella’s nonprofits spent more than $62 million on voter registration and mobilization efforts during 2022, a midterm election year. Much of the Arabella network’s spending also focused on getting Democrat-friendly demographics to the polls. New Venture Fund, one of Arabella’s arms, gave millions to the Voter Registration Project, a group “commissioned” by veteran Democratic operative John Podesta that, according to Influence Watch, “targets African-American, Latino, Native American, low-income, and other voter groups likely to lean left-of-center.” The Soros philanthropic empire also gave millions to the Voter Registration Project between 2016 and 2022. The project’s efforts in 2020 netted Biden between 1 million and 2.7 million votes, according to a Capital Research Center report. Open Society Policy Center, part of the broader Soros network, gave $1.4 million to the Voto Latino Action Fund in 2022. The organization focuses on registering Latino voters and loosening voting laws, according to its website. High voter turnout among Latinos was among the reasons Democrats outperformed expectations during the 2022 midterm elections, according to Politico. “Voter registration nonprofits are nothing more than a cost-effective way to achieve partisan electioneering results for Democrats while keeping the donors totally anonymous and giving them a tax write-off for their troubles,” Parker Thayer, an investigative researcher at Capital Research Center, previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Democracy Fund, Arabella, Tides, and Open Society Foundations did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment. MRC's Tim Graham on Fox Biz: NPR's CEO Should Be Afraid of Us and Our Evidence

After his boat-rocking testimony before a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on the leftist tilt of National Public Radio on Wednesday, NewsBusters Executive Editor Tim Graham appeared on The Bottom Line with Dagen & Duffy on Fox Business. Host Sean Duffy said it was unfair to make taxpayers fund a "radical liberal machine.". NPR CEO Katharine Maher declined an invitation to the hearing, and Graham said "Maybe she didn't want to show up because we had all of the examples today.... NPR likes books like In Defense of Looting. NPR likes the movie How to Blow Up a Pipeline and then it's everything they have to say about the Republicans, being 'hard right' Republicans who want to drive the country off a cliff. I don't know how you can defend all that. We had Democrats today trying to claim what NPR does is objective, you just don't like objective reporting, which is comedy. You can't provide a laugh track when they say that, because it impolite. But you sure wanted to." Co-host Dagen McDowell suggested the Democrats don't listen to NPR so they can be "blissfully ignorant" when they call it unbiased, so they "can stay that without laughing." She called NPR a "sewage lagoon." They discussed how NPR claims they only receive one percent of the budget from the federal government, but in reality, the government funds the local affiliates, who send money back to Washington in "programming fees." So a defunding would be dramatic for them. Tim said "What they really need to do is just take that threat, and say we getter go back to what we are supposed to be doing, which is allowing both sides to speak, let both parties speak. That is not what they are doing, they have softballs for Democrats and hardball for Republicans -- when they get a chance [to be interviewed]." See highlights from Tim's hearing here.

Like 'using the N-word': Mom of student suspended for saying 'illegal alien' in class sits down with BlazeTV's Sara Gonzales

The parents of Christian McGhee, a North Carolina teen who was recently suspended for using the term "illegal alien" during class at Central Davidson High School, have now filed a federal lawsuit against the school district. Christian's mother, Leah McGhee, recently sat down with BlazeTV's Sara Gonzales on an episode of "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered" to discuss the details of the incident and the lawsuit. Last month, Christian returned to English class after using the bathroom and found the class talking about aliens. Since he had been out of the room when the discussion began, he didn't understand the context of it. So he asked his teacher: "Like space aliens or illegal aliens who need green cards?" A student of Latino descent sitting in front of Christian then turned around and claimed he would beat Christian up for that remark, as Blaze News previously reported. "In my line of work ... this is the battle, and this is how we win." The entire incident seemed to have been blown out of proportion from the jump. Leah McGhee explained to Sara Gonzales that the boys were on "friendly" terms and were just teasing one another. "This was two 16-year-old boys just going back and forth," Leah McGhee said. The assistant principal, however, apparently insisted that Christian's question had clear racist undertones. According to Leah McGhee, despite the Latino student's statement that he took no actual offense to the term "illegal alien," the assistant principal replied, "No, sir. This is a big deal, and this does matter." He even likened the term to "using the N-word," Mrs. McGhee told Gonzales. Both boys were later suspended. Christian received a three-day, out-of-school suspension for violating the school's code regarding racism, and the Latino student was given a one-day, in-school suspension for verbalizing threats. Leah McGhee claimed that she, her husband, and Christian have made several overtures to explain their side of the story to school administrators and the district. She even offered to meet with the Latino student, his mother, and the teacher to clear the air. To no avail. Not only was Christian suspended from school, but his track coach forbade him from competing in two meets, jeopardizing Christian's chances of earning a college scholarship. But the McGhee family continues to fight against the racism label that was added to Christian's permanent record. They joined forces with the Liberty Justice Center, which filed a lawsuit against the Davidson County Board of Education, claiming the school had violated Christian's First and 14th Amendment rights. "Schools are government," attorney Dean McGee told Sara. "And in this case, you have the government branding this kid a racist, depriving him of his right to an education for three days, depriving him of his ability to participate in track, and telling him there are no appeals permitted." "We don't want kids being scared to ask questions in class." Gonzales is likewise indignant that the school apparently wants to "tar and feather" Christian and "put a scarlet letter" on him over a term that is regularly used in federal law and in media. She also believes that lawsuits such as the one filed by the McGhees are the way that families with traditional beliefs and values will "win" against ideologically driven school districts and administrators. "In my line of work, for me," Sara explained, "this is the battle, and this is how we win: We file lawsuits against all of these people." The full segment with Leah McGhee will air on Thursday night, but you can check out a preview of it below. And be sure to subscribe to BlazeTV for more original content. I spoke with the mother of the North Carolina boy who was suspended from school for 3 days for using the term “illegal alien.”

She told me administrators said it was THE SAME as using “the N-word.”

Full interview with Leah McGhee & her attorney @DeanMMcGee (@LJCenter) tomorrow… — (@) Like Blaze News? House passes bill to add citizenship question to census to stop illegal aliens from distorting congressional representation

On Wednesday, House Republicans passed a bill that would add a citizenship question to the census and thereby prevent illegal aliens from impacting redistricting and Electoral College apportionment, the New York Post reported. The Equal Representation Act passed in a 206-202 vote without any Democratic support. Introduced by Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-Ill.), the bill has more than 100 cosponsors.States reevaluate their congressional map each decade, losing or gaining seats based on census population data. "One of the great scandals in American history," Miller remarked.“Including the count of non-U.S. citizens in determining how many congressional seats and electoral votes each state has is skewing the representation of Americans in their federal government,” Edwards stated.“The mere presence of illegal immigrants in the U.S. is influencing electoral outcomes, and the Equal Representation Act that the House passed would protect our democracy by making sure that American citizens – and American citizens only – have a say in determining the direction of our country,” he added.Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) hosted a live Spaces discussion Thursday afternoon on X to discuss the bill’s passage in the House. He was joined by Stephen Miller, the founder of America First Legal and former senior advisor to President Donald Trump.“They’re doing this for power,” Hagerty said of the Democrats who voted against the bill and have supported mass illegal immigration through the southern border. He explained that sanctuary cities “act as magnets” for illegal aliens to “dilute voters” in states like Tennessee. “What the bill requires is a citizenship question on the census and it will prohibit counting illegal aliens for the purpose of apportioning Congressional seats and electoral votes by states,” Hagerty stated. “It really gets at the [motive] behind the crime that’s taking place at our southern border.”“[Democrats are] doing this for power. They’re doing this to preserve power in many cases because when you think about the exodus from these blue states that are so poorly run, those citizens are leaving. They’re moving to states like mine in Tennessee. As those states lose legitimate legal population, one alternative is to backfill that with folks that are here illegally. And if you think about where the Democrats have situated their sanctuary cities, in states like California, Illinois, New York — where they’re losing population,” Hagerty explained.Miller called the attempt to dilute political power “one of the great scandals in American history.”He said, “Every single Senate Democrat, every single one, including people who have pretended falsely to be moderates ... voted to say, ‘I want illegal aliens in California to dilute the political power of Montana citizens. I want more congressional seats in California representing illegal aliens. I want more electoral power in the electoral college for illegal aliens in California.’”“The Democratic Party is completely committed through the proposition that their political future rests on filling the country up with illegals,” Miller added.Like Blaze News?
