A student writer for the Harvard Crimson has called for a university-wide review of all faculty publications after investigative journalists uncovered more examples of alleged academic dishonesty at the hands of a black female former Harvard professor.On Wednesday‚ Christopher Rufo of City Journal and Luke Rosiak of the Daily Wire revealed that Lisa D. Cook‚ a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and a tenured professor at Michigan State University‚ has allegedly been even more untruthful about her academic work than previously thought.Cook';s economic credentials have been called into question at least since President Joe Biden nominated her to the Federal Reserve board in January 2022. Back then‚ critics noted not only that her list of publications was unusually thin for a tenured professor but that her most celebrated article ";Violence and Economic Activity: Evidence from African American Patents‚ 1870 to 1940‚"; published in 2014 was predicated on egregiously flawed data‚ leading her to unfairly argue that lynching and discrimination caused the number of patents issued to black people to collapse around the turn of the 20th century.One attempt at replicating her research for that article indicated that the number of patents issued to blacks at that time could have been nearly 70 times higher than the number Cook offered.She also continues to mislead about the quality of at least one her publications. In 2022‚ Chris Brunet of the Daily Caller News Foundation noticed that Cook had claimed she had been published in the American Economic Review‚ described by Brunet as ";the top peer-reviewed economics journal in the world."; However‚ that 2009 article actually appeared in American Economic Review Papers and Proceedings‚ which is not peer-reviewed. Though this detail has been publicly documented for more than two years‚ the CV included on Cook';s personal academic website which is also linked to her directory listing at the MSU Department of Economics still implies the article appeared in the more prestigious version of AER.Now‚ Rufo and Rosiak have reported that Cook has also repeatedly copied lengthy passages from the work of other scholars without proper attribution and even committed ";self-plagiarism‚"; lifting excerpts from her previous articles and including them in new ones‚ thereby compromising the notion of original work. In the journalists'; opinion‚ Cook';s publication missteps demonstrate ";a pattern of careless scholarship at best or‚ at worst‚ academic misconduct.";Cook‚ who was also once a member of the faculty of the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government and the deputy director of Africa research at its Center for International Development‚ is now the fifth current or former Harvard professor who also happens to be black and female to be accused of some form of academic malfeasance. The others include former Harvard President Claudine Gay‚ current chief diversity and inclusion officer Sherri Charleston‚ current Extension School administrator Shirley Greene‚ and current assistant sociology Professor Christina Cross.";Lets not ignore the pattern‚"; Rufo tweeted a few weeks ago.Maya Bodnick of the Harvard Crimson believes this ";pattern"; is actually the result of a conservative ";witch hunt"; to try and show that female black scholars plagiarize at disproportionally high rates. Two Nigerian brothers agreed on Wednesday to a plea deal over their involvement in an international sextortion scam that led to one teen';s suicide.17-year-old Jordan DeMay of Michigan was tricked into sending nude photos of himself over Instagram to the scammers who had posed as a teenage girl. The scammers threatened to send the nude photographs to all of his followers‚ including friends and family‚ unless he paid their extortion demand.In one of their reported interactions‚ the Nigerians encouraged DeMay to kill himself after he couldn';t come up with the $1‚000 they were demanding. ";I';m going to kill myself right now‚"; the teenager told the scammers. ";Good‚"; they responded. ";Do it fast.";DeMay committed suicide in 2022 under the pressure of the threats.U.S. officials worked to identify the scammers in Lagos‚ Nigeria‚ and were able to extradite two suspects‚ 22-year-old Samuel Ogoshi and 20-year-old Samson Ogoshi to the U.S. in August. Initially‚ the pair pleaded not guilty but later agreed to a plea deal. The Ogoshis agreed to pay restitution to the family of DeMay and to the more than 100 other victims of the scam. They also pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to sexually exploit minors. A third person named Ezekiel Ejehem Robert is accused of running the scam‚ but Nigerian officials are reviewing the extradition request from U.S. officials.DeMay';s mother‚ Jennifer Buta‚ told WDIV-TV that she hoped the case would serve as a warning to predators on social media no matter where they are located.";I hope that from what happened today‚ it truly sends a message to people who are engaging in this type of behavior online‚ that it doesn';t matter where you are‚ you can be caught and held accountable for doing this activity online to our children‚"; said Buta.U.S. attorney Mark Totten agreed with the grieving mother';s sentiment. Sara Gonzales‚ host of BlazeTV';s ";Sara Gonzales Unfiltered‚"; sits down with a British doctor who was canceled decades ago because he dared to question a common vaccine.In 1993‚ Andrew Wakefield was a doctor specializing in gastroenterology in London when he began to have doubts about the childhood vaccine known as MMR‚ which stands for measles‚ mumps‚ and rubella. Around that time‚ Wakefield claimed parents began contacting him‚ complaining that their children began showing frightening symptoms following their MMR vaccination.";I started getting calls from parents saying‚ ';My child was perfectly well. They had speech and language interaction with their siblings‚ they were developing normally healthy‚ and then they had an MMR vaccine‚ and they had a seizure and they were never the same again‚"; Wakefield recalled to Gonzales.Those children were often then diagnosed with autism‚ prompting concerns about a possible link between vaccinations in general and autism. But Wakefield did not want parents to ditch vaccines altogether. Rather‚ he wanted children to receive three separate vaccines one for measles‚ mumps‚ and rubella perhaps a year apart.The British government took a different view‚ Wakefield claimed. ";If we allowed parents the choice [to have separate vaccines]‚ it would destroy our MMR program‚"; officials allegedly told Wakefield.Merck‚ the pharmaceutical company which manufactures MMR‚ likewise withdrew the individual vaccines in the U.S.‚ he said.The retaliation against Wakefield was swift and fierce. He eventually lost his medical license and was shunned by many in the medical community. The Louisiana House of Representatives has passed a measure that would stipulate that people who unlawfully block a roadway do not have a cause of action against a driver who‚ due to concern for their own life‚ or that of their passengers‚ inflicts harm while employing vehicular force to escape from those blocking the street.";No pedestrian illegally blocking a roadway in violation of R.S. 32:143.2‚ 216‚ or any other applicable statute shall have a cause of action against the operator of a motor vehicle for any injury‚ death‚ loss‚ or damage resulting from any act or omission by the operator of the motor vehicle if such injury‚ death‚ loss‚ or damage is caused by the operator';s use of force with his vehicle in order to retreat or escape from the pedestrian illegally blocking the roadway‚ and the operator reasonably believes that he or his passengers are in immediate danger of imminent death‚ bodily injury‚ or serious bodily harm‚"; the proposal states.The measure passed through the state House and has headed to the state Senate‚ where Republicans also hold a majority.State Rep. An MTV reality show star said that he was sick to his stomach and felt violated after his Hollywood Hills home was targeted by armed burglars.31-year-old actor and influencer Joey Zauzig described the incident from his home on on Marmont Lane to his followers on social media. Last night‚ at around 12 a.m.‚ three men armed with face masks broke into our house while we were sleeping. I woke up to it and triggered the alarm as they shattered one of the glass doors‚ said Zauzig on a story on Instagram. The actor posted surveillance video from his home showing three masked men sneaking toward his property. He said they shattered a sliding glass door and activated an alarm‚ which woke up Zauzig and his husband at about midnight on Monday.";We didn';t know if they were still in the house‚ we were‚ like‚ so freaked out‚ I was like screaming ';Help!'; from the balcony‚"; Zauzig said.
