Former Olympic gymnast MyKayla Skinner — and Simone Biles’ former teammate — issued a plea to the Olympic Gold medalist to make the death threats against her family and cyber-bullying stop. Skinner faced a backlash after she posted a video in June on YouTube during the gymnastic Olympic trials in which she talked about how she felt work ethics have changed among gymnasts, not counting Biles, the Hollywood Reporter reported.  “Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and the depth just isn’t what it used to be,” Skinner said, at the time. “I mean, obviously, a lot of girls just don’t work as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic.” The Olympics started July 26th and on July 31st Biles appeared to send a cryptic message to her former teammate, writing on social media, “Lack of talent, lazy, olympic champions,” in the caption next to a photo of the U.S. Team celebrating its victory after getting the gold. On Tuesday, Skinner pleaded with Biles to get her followers to stop making hateful comments and threats to her, her husband, and their 10-month-old daughter. A Minnesota military reservist who heeded the call to fight the war in Iraq said in 2006 that Tim Walz, now the Democrat candidate for vice president, had “disappointed” his peers by “misleading” people into believing he served in Iraq. “Walz is leaving the impression that he served in the combat zones of the current conflict. The truth is that he served in Italy,” Tom Hagen wrote in a letter published in the Winona Daily News on November 1, 2006. “There is a significant difference between Walz’s garrison service in Italy and the extreme danger young men and women are facing in the combat zones of Iraq and Afghanistan.” According to Hagen, it was “even more disturbing” that “Walz quickly retired after learning that his unit…would be sent to Iraq.” “For Tim Walz to misleadingly give the impression that he served in a combat zone is bad enough,” Hagen wrote. “For Tim Walz to abandon his fellow soldiers and quit when they needed experienced leadership is most disheartening. It dishonors those brave American men and women who did answer their nation’s call and who continue to serve, fight and unfortunately die in harm’s way for us.” Walz responded to Hagen in a letter to the Daily News in which he implied Hagen lacked “honor.” “There’s a code of honor among those who’ve served, and normally this type of partisan political attack only comes from one who’s never worn a uniform,” Walz wrote. Hagen deployed twice to Iraq, and since 2013 has worked as a lawyer fighting to secure federal benefits for veterans wounded in combat. Since joining the Democratic ticket, Walz has come under fire for misrepresenting his military record. Walz has repeatedly suggested that he saw active duty during his time in the Minnesota National Guard, a claim that has been debunked by veterans and fact-checked by CNN. Trump campaign senior advisor Chris LaCivita worked in 2004 with Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, which publicized the fact that then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry had misrepresented his military record. The campaign is often credited with Kerry’s defeat.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) signed a law last year that removed language clarifying that pedophiles were excluded from the definition of sexual orientation. Walz was tapped as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate on Tuesday, prompting scrutiny of his progressive record on LGBT and other issues. That sentence was struck in the new version of the law that Walz signed. A person may be attracted to men, women, both, neither, or to people who are genderqueer, androgynous, or have other gender identities.” The Take Pride Act also added a definition of gender identity to Minnesota law, defining it as “a person’s inherent sense of being a man, woman, both, or neither” that “may or may not correspond to their assigned sex at birth or to their primary or secondary sex characteristics” and is “not necessarily visible to others.” The bill removes “outdated language that wrongly prejudices LGBTQIA+ community members by attempting to tie sexual orientation to criminal acts,” the Minnesota Department of Human Rights said. State Representative Leigh Finke (D), a trans-identifying man representing the Twin Cities, was behind the amendment that eliminated the language about pedophiles. During a committee hearing on the bill, Finke, who took office last year, said his amendment “modernizes our Human Rights Act.” “It’s important that we continue to evolve our laws and our understanding of what it means to be a full and authentic human,” Finke said. “We do this throughout history, throughout time, and this is a great moment for us to expand what it means to be a person and to protect all of us. That’s what my bill does.” Sporting half-dyed blue hair and a rainbow dress, Finke was also photographed with his arm around Walz when the governor signed a different law that doubled down on legal transgender medical interventions for children like hormone treatments and surgeries. Walz also signed legislation allowing Minnesota to seize custody of a child whose parents refuse to provide “gender affirming care” and banned “conversion therapy,” a vague term often used to dismiss talk therapy wherein mental health professionals help make children comfortable with their biological sex, rather than shunting them towards transgender surgeries and hormone treatments.
