New York Attorney Generals Crusade Against VDARE Sparks Debate Over Free Speech and Ideological Targeting

If you';re tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net.Letitia James‚ Attorney General of New York‚ has shifted her focus from former President Donald Trump to an independent website‚ VDARE‚ which the outlet suggests is part of an ideological war that threatens the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and dissent. This recent offensive against VDARE‚ employing similar lawfare tactics as against President Trump‚ highlights the cost and struggle of defending free expression. In a post on Good Friday 2024‚ VDAREs founder and editor‚ Peter Brimelow‚ ominously announced‚ VDARE.coms crucifixion by New York States communist Attorney General Letitia James. VDARE has been battling relentless subpoenas from James‚ sinking nearly $1 million in legal fees over three years.AG James has been unyieldingly searching for faults within VDAREs operations. The AG has turned scrutiny on VDAREs own real estate properties to fuel her campaign. In 2020‚ VDARE eyed self-preservation when denied the use of hotels for conferences and difficulty receiving credit card donations; the foundation bought a $1.4 million castle in West Virginia. The property purchase‚ notwithstanding similar acquisitions by other charitable organizations‚ has now sparked legal debates over whether the castle serves as a residence for the founders. The legitimacy of this issue remains contested‚ with Lydia Brimelow‚ Peters wife and President of the VDARE Foundation‚ firmly asserting that the castle is not their home but their office. Conversely‚ New York trial court judge Sabrina Kraus argued that the Brimelows paid rent to live on the site. Regardless of the validity of either claim‚ Brimelow clarified that the family had been paying independently determined rent to their separate charity VDARE Foundation. The crux‚ however‚ is accused of being pointedly aimed at VDAREs conservative leaning‚ spurring questions on why other property tycoons evading responsibilities arent pursued similarly to Trump or VDARE.VDARE is now at the brink of another potentially costly dilemma as part of the investigation‚ they are pushed to surrender 40 GB of emails and risk revealing the identities of anonymous writers and donors or bear a $150‚000 expense for redaction. The post New York Attorney Generals Crusade Against VDARE Sparks Debate Over Free Speech and Ideological Targeting appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

Brazilian Censorship Scandal: Twitter Files Shows How Government and Big Tech Silence Dissent

If you';re tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net.The latest development in the Twitter Files suggests that a concerted initiative backed by the Brazilian government is threatening freedom of speech across the globe in coordination with various high-profile tech companies. According to the allegations brought forth by investigative journalist Michael Shellenberger‚ former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaros supporters are specifically in the crosshairs of this extensive campaign. At the helm of this scheme‚ as Shellenberger suggests‚ is Alexandre de Moraes‚ the superior electoral courts chief and a participant in Supreme court proceedings and someone whose push for censorship has been documented heavily. He is purportedly leading a combined legislative and judicial endeavor to stifle political dissent. Shellenberger unveils some quite disturbing actions allegedly enforced by de Moraes‚ including imprisoning individuals sans trial for content shared on the web‚ the requirement of user-removal from social media sites and specific content censorship without the ability to appeal or access evidence produced against them.Another disconcerting aspect of this politically-motivated censorship campaign in Brazil concerns the use of user data from major tech companies. Shellenbergers expose points out that companies like Google‚ Facebook‚ Uber‚ Instagram and WhatsApp have assisted the government by sharing registration data and contact numbers in absence of court orders or firm legal grounds for such disclosure. Rafael Batista‚ Twitters legal representative in Brazil‚ is contending these intrusive court orders for private data. However‚ Googles complicity‚ in particular‚ has soured Twitters resistance.During the two-year span‚ several Brazilian courts‚ notably the Superior Electoral Court‚ made multiple attempts to access Twitter users log-in records‚ direct message content‚ and unmask users using specific hashtags or who retweeted certain content. Interestingly‚ some of these demands targeted users outside Brazil. Twitters legal team‚ including Batista‚ faced police investigation for contesting these requests‚ citing non-compliance with legal disclosure requirements and infringement on privacy laws.In 2021‚ Batista claimed that a public prosecutor alleged Big Tech companies like Google‚ Facebook‚ Uber‚ WhatsApp‚ and Instagram provided user data to Brazilian authorities without requiring a court order. This assertion included an incident where Google reportedly handed over 200 gigabytes of YouTube videos to the Brazilian Senate‚ which were linked to the governments COVID-19 response investigation. This action by Google was labeled as a very concerning precedent by Batista‚ especially given Twitters resistance to similar requests.Shellenberger also highlights that while Twitter resisted the initiation of illegitimate criminal cases and various other suits‚ it admitted to muzzling someone for their comments about COVID-19. It was revealed that once the supporters of Bolsonaro started challenging the actions of Brazils key government entities‚ namely TSE &;amp; STF‚ the courts pursued to de-platform and suppress these individuals on the internet. Well-known associates of Bolsonaro‚ including his son Carlos‚ were affected by these crackdowns. Additionally‚ the Superior Electoral Court demanded the demonetization of accounts belonging to Bolsonaro supporters. These actions appear separate from the censorship of Bolsonaro supporters on Twitter in late 2022.According to Twitters Head of Legal‚ Diego de Lima Gualda‚ there is a significant political tinge to this investigation with courts exerting pressure for compliance with certain requirements by attempting to lower the impact of specific content and trending hashtags.Incidentally‚ some time around November of 2021‚ an appeals court directed Twitter to globally remove various specific URLs associated with a plaintiff. In an even more alarming turn of events‚ by March this year‚ even Brazils Federal Police equivalent to FBI had joined the TSE-directed investigation.Adding another wrinkle to this widespread assault on free speech‚ Shellenberger reported that Twitter eventually gave into the orders from de Moraes‚ despite initial resistance. With the Brazilian government still escalating its censorship efforts‚ Shellenberger warns that it is the democratic system that stands on losing ground.Read Shellenbergers full thread here. The post Brazilian Censorship Scandal: Twitter Files Shows How Government and Big Tech Silence Dissent appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

Poland Plots Hate Speech Censorship Law Including Jailing Offenders for As Much as Three Years

If you';re tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net.Polands new left-leaning government is pioneering an unprecedented crackdown on so-called hate speech. Newly proposed legislation could result in three-year imprisonment sentences for individuals accused of delivering offensive remarks against members of the LGBT community. The fresh approach to law enforcement has been attributed to the lefts successful rise to power‚ fulfilling earlier calls for rigid speech control. The Polish Ministry of Justice has put forth a draft amendment on hate speech for public viewing on the official Government Legislation Center website. This proposed legislation targets not only hate speech related to sexual orientation and gender identity‚ but expands its scope to include offenses against age‚ disability‚ and gender.Nonetheless‚ the Confederation party in Poland is resolute in their objection towards this planned governmental crackdown on hate speech‚ asserting a dire need for unsuppressed freedom of public discourse. Provisions relating to gender‚ sexual orientation‚ and gender identity have been annexed to Article 256 and 257‚ pertaining to incitement to hatred and offenses respectively. With the draft prepared for review‚ the implications of the newly expanded definitions are extensive. Even vague offenses‚ vaguely categorized as insults‚ could potentially result in severe punitive measures. More specifically‚ insults leveled against someones sexual orientation or gender identity are now considered criminal‚ attracting penalties of up to three years imprisonment.Emerging criticism against the fresh legislation points towards serious concerns about the potential implications on freedom of speech in Poland‚ as early as January this year. Opposition groups argue that such changes would effectively stifle free speech and pose a potent threat to religious freedom in Poland. In particular‚ Catholic doctrines that critique various aspects of LGBT ideologies could fall within the laws scope. As stated by Confederation MP Karina Bosak: The ruling coalition‚ as part of its coalition agreement‚ has announced that they want to penalize so-called hate speech. The current left-wing Deputy Minister of Justice Krzysztof miszek‚ from the New Left‚ has stated that his department is currently working on introducing these regulations‚ which limit freedom of speech and public debate in Poland. We‚ as the Confederation‚ strongly oppose this. The direct consequence of criminalizing certain words will‚ in fact‚ be the criminalization of conservative‚ religious‚ Christian views. The post Poland Plots Hate Speech Censorship Law Including Jailing Offenders for As Much as Three Years appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

UK Police Focus on Minor Speech Incidents Over Traditional Crime

If you';re tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net.Reports indicate that‚ despite recent government directives‚ UK police forces continue to document instances such as neighborhood squabbles‚ inebriated tirades‚ and online disputes as incidences of hatred. This‚ unusually‚ includes business owners on the receiving end of negative internet reviews. Last year‚ authorities appealed to the police to halt documenting occurrences devoid of any clear evidence of deliberate bias. Nonetheless‚ the trend persists.Worryingly‚ this diversion of attention appears to coincide with a substantial drop in the resolution rate for conventional crimes. Home Office data reveals that in 2023‚ a meager 3.9% of robbery incidents resulted in charges being laid.In the spotlight of recent criticism is former Home Secretary Suella Bravermans assertion to the police force that they need to do better. Furthermore‚ the College of Policing has had to reevaluate its guidelines concerning non-hate crime incidents‚ spurred by a notable verdict this past December.Last year‚ the Home Office issued a protocol specifying that The perception of hostility or prejudice by a complainant or any other person alone is not enough‚ in and of itself‚ to warrant an NCHI record being made.Despite these directives‚ a review by civil liberties group Big Brother Watch found that 32 out of the 46 scrutinized police forces had recorded more than 6‚000 NCHI entries between June and November 2023.Further disheartening is recent data indicating that close to 50% of all residential break-ins in England and Wales remain unsolved. With police struggling to resolve these crimes in 48% of neighborhoods‚ consisting of 1‚000-3‚000 residents‚ over the last three years‚ this high rate of impunity for burglars raises significant concerns. The post UK Police Focus on Minor Speech Incidents Over Traditional Crime appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

Disinformation Expert Tells People To Only Use Trusted Sources‚ Avoid Doing Your Own Research

If you';re tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net.Brianna Lyman‚ elections correspondent at The Federalist‚ recently reported on a panel discussion featuring Al Schmidt‚ Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth‚ and Beth Schwanke‚ Executive Director of the Pitt Disinformation Lab. Schmidt and Schwanke‚ speaking at a forum organized by Spotlight PA‚ voiced their stance on misinformation and disinformation surrounding elections. Strikingly‚ Schwanke recommended that rather than conducting self-led investigations‚ Pennsylvanians should place their confidence in so-called trusted sources. These include certain institutions and media outlets that have unfortunately been tied in the past to acts of censorship.Related:Pennsylvania Collaborates With DHS and CISA To Monitor Online Election-Related SpeechOne thing everyone can do to make sure they are seeing accurate information is to use trusted sources. So in elections that means using the Department of State‚ that means using your county elections office‚ it means using media organizations that follow‚ that adhere‚ to professional journalism standards like your local NPR affiliate‚ Schwanke said. And it doesnt mean you know‚ doing your own research and just asking questions and sharing‚ you know‚ posts from I dont know‚ in my case‚ its Uncle Joe‚ right? It means being thoughtful about where your sources are coming from.Schwankes advice‚ interestingly‚ seemed to discourage individual research‚ questioning‚ and sharing of ideas. Instead‚ she advocated the use of sources like the Department of State‚ county elections offices‚ and‚ strikingly‚ media organizations such as local NPR affiliates‚ which she implied upheld superior journalistic standards.Despite what Schwanke says‚ the importance of being vigilant about our sources of information cannot be overstated. This was vividly demonstrated in the lead-up to the 2020 election when a significant story on Hunter Bidens laptop by the New York Post was unjustly labeled disinformation‚ and subsequently suppressed across several tech platforms. As The Federalist reported‚ what made matters worse‚ in an incident hinting at bias‚ NPR blatantly refused to report on the story‚ with its Managing Editor Terence Samuels declaring it as unworthy of coverage. The Pennsylvania State Department presented a similar cause for alarm. It announced its collaboration with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to monitor and control online talks deemed a threat related to the election process. Despite its claimed intention to offer voters accurate‚ trustworthy election-related data and to counter threats such as so-called misinformation‚ there is good reason to question the impartiality of its activities. Case in point‚ CISA had previously facilitated the silencing of Americans expressing valid concerns on social media‚ as if they were spreading disinformation‚ and even had a post from President Donald Trump flagged under these pretenses. The post Disinformation Expert Tells People To Only Use Trusted Sources‚ Avoid Doing Your Own Research appeared first on Reclaim The Net.
