Beyond Human: Scientists Imagine What Aliens Might Look Like
Humanity has not discovered real aliens and it is believed that they may be completely different from anything we have seen on Earth.
One of the most important questions that humanity is trying to answer is: are we alone in the Universe? But if life exists on other planets, what might it look like?
When some people hear the word aliens, they may imagine either little green men or terrible huge predatory creatures, as they are depicted in science fiction films.
But scientists believe that it is unlikely that aliens, if they exist, will look exactly like this. It’s likely that the unique environments on other planets or their moons where potential aliens live could make their physiology completely different from anything seen on Earth, reports livescience.com.
Astrophysicist Adam Frank from the University of Rochester, USA, suggests that due to the dense atmosphere on their planet, aliens could evolve in such a way that they would turn into only flying creatures. If the planet has very high gravity, then evolution could lead to the fact that aliens would become more like giant creatures.
Valentina Erastova of the University of Edinburgh, UK, believes that extraterrestrial life may have evolved to live beneath the planet’s surface. This can happen if the planet receives too much radiation from the star, allowing extraterrestrial life to use the soil as a shield. In this case, it will most likely be a simple multicellular life. According to the scientist, similar examples can be found even on Earth.
Aliens, due to their star’s intense ultraviolet radiation, may actually glow red, blue or green to protect themselves, according to a study published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
It is speculated that, like some corals, these organisms may have proteins or pigments that can absorb some of the energy from ultraviolet light, which then causes them to glow at safer wavelengths in the visible spectrum.
According to Frank, aliens living on a planet with very low temperatures can adapt to these conditions by using very slow metabolisms. For example, such a cold world is Saturn’s moon Titan, where scientists suggest very unusual life may exist in methane seas.
Complex or simple extraterrestrial life?
While some scientists suggest that potential aliens could be a form of complex multicellular life, others believe that extraterrestrial life is likely to be much simpler.
Astronomer Sarah Rugheimer of York University in Toronto, Canada, says it’s more likely that extraterrestrial life will be single-celled. She explains this by saying that most of the time only microbial life existed on Earth. And even now, most of the biosphere of our planet is represented by just this form of life.
Finding single-celled life on other planets may be challenging, but scientists are proposing one way to solve the problem. They propose looking for signs of the existence of this life based on traces that microbes could leave.
According to Rugheimer, even if single-celled extraterrestrial life managed to turn into multicellular life, it is very unlikely that these creatures would look exactly the same as humans. The scientist believes that the unique physiology of man is both the result of development in a special environment on Earth, as well as a successful combination of circumstances.
But alien life may still have some of the same traits found in living things on Earth, such as eyes to see the environment and limbs to traverse it. But that’s where the similarities may end, scientists say.
All ideas about what potential aliens might look like are based on the assumption that extraterrestrial life, like life on Earth, requires water, starlight and oxygen to exist.
But it is possible that life on other planets could have evolved completely differently and may even have a completely different chemical composition. If earthly life is based on carbon, then aliens may be based on silicon. But Rugheimer believes carbon is more abundant than silicon and forms more complex chemistry.
What scientists agree on is that no one really has any idea what aliens might actually look like. And all this is just speculation.
