The New Heavens and Earth Fuel Global Missions

Scripture wasn’t written as a random collection of disconnected texts. It’s a coherent narrative with a beginning‚ middle‚ and end. The elements of its plot are creation‚ fall‚ redemption‚ and restoration. History is going somewhere‚ and that somewhere is the new heavens and the new earth (Rev. 21:1–4). Understanding that all history is moving toward this eschatological hope informs our motivation in missions. God is glorified in the declaration of the gospel‚ in the salvation of undeserving sinners‚ and in the praise and thanksgiving saved sinners will give to God for all eternity. In missions‚ we’re populating the new heavens and earth with a redeemed people drawn from every tribe‚ tongue‚ people‚ and nation (7:9). Missions isn’t simply offering a way to escape hell. We’re offering citizenship in the eternal kingdom of God. Ultimately‚ our motivation in missions is God’s glory seen and experienced in the new creation. Nothing less will shape and sustain missionaries on the field. Motivated by Glory Of course‚ we can acknowledge other motivations for our mission‚ but they fall underneath our primary focus on God’s glory. One is our desire to keep people out of hell—an appropriate concern. Although modern Christianity is reluctant to talk about hell‚ it’s real‚ horrifying‚ and totally just. Our desire to save people from eternal condemnation they’ll face apart from God is an expression of love for our neighbors. We’re not just helping people avoid judgment but calling them to experience what they were created for. Yet we’re not just helping people avoid judgment but calling them to experience what they were created for. We’re inviting people to indescribable glory in the presence of God. We’re inviting them to a real‚ physical life of infinite joy in a renewed creation in which all pain and injustice are gone forever—to a life that’s infinitely good‚ glorious‚ joyful‚ and never-ending. This is a fuller and richer expression of love for our neighbor than simply offering an escape from hell. We’re motivated by the glory of the new heavens and new earth to urge others to join us there. Message of Hope The good news of the new heavens and earth also shapes our message. Evangelistic presentations often follow an outline of God‚ Man‚ Christ‚ and Response. The narrative about Christ usually ends with his resurrection. Repentance and faith are pitched as the way to an eternal life that keeps us from hell’s punishment. Yet the doctrine of the new heavens and earth should infuse our gospel presentations with hope. Yes‚ the gospel includes the life‚ death‚ and resurrection of Jesus (1 Cor. 15:1–4). But it also includes his ascension‚ his session at the right hand of the Father‚ his return‚ and the restoration of all things in the new creation. The benefits won by Christ and given through the gospel include forgiveness of sin and eternal life. There’s more. In addition to the benefits of salvation in this life‚ we have even more to look forward to in the life to come. The blessings of salvation aren’t complete until our glorification (Rom. 8:19–30)‚ and they come to fulfillment only in the new heavens and the new earth. This is good news! Everything wrong in the world is going to be made right. Things dimly enjoyed in this life will be richly and gloriously enjoyed in the next. This hope is essential to the gospel and should be integral to the missionary’s message. Empowered to Endure When we understand the doctrine of the new heavens and new earth‚ we’re empowered to persevere in the face of suffering. Missionary service is at best inconvenient and at worst hazardous. One of the most common concerns raised to missionary candidates by family and friends is “But isn’t it dangerous?” Curiously‚ that same question is seldom directed to church members who join the military‚ even though military service is more dangerous. Apparently it’s acceptable‚ even in Christian circles‚ to risk your life for your country but not for your Savior. How can missionaries go in the face of suffering? How can they stay when colleagues and national partners die for the gospel? The answer‚ of course‚ is the gospel. The hope of the resurrection and eternal life in the indescribable glory of the new heavens and the new earth fuels perseverance in the presence of suffering. The indescribable glory of the new heavens and the new earth fuels perseverance in the presence of suffering. As the apostle Paul says‚ “This light‚ momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Cor. 4:17). The hope of glory enables us to leave behind everything dear to us‚ knowing that far better lies ahead. It reminds us that all the pleasures‚ promises‚ and ambitions of this life are no better than rubbish compared to what’s to come. We can stare death in the face knowing it’s simply the door to an eternal glory beyond all comparison. Our Missionary Longing If we’re to pursue our mission faithfully‚ we need to understand both the history of the world and the structure of the Bible as a grand narrative of God’s sovereign work‚ culminating in the new heavens and the new earth. Even today‚ all creation is longing for that new creation (Rom. 8:19). That same longing should give shape and purpose to all we do in missions. We should be motivated by the promise of the new creation to take the gospel to all tribes‚ tongues‚ peoples‚ and nations. The good news of the new heavens and new earth should be an essential component of our gospel message. And that same gospel will empower us to persevere in the face of difficulty and even death‚ knowing infinite glory and joy lie ahead.

Win People Rather Than Arguments

“I’m a Christian‚ but I’m not a fan of the church. It’s a literal cult!” “I think most Christians would be shocked to find out Jesus was probably bisexual.” “I have no problem with religion. I have a problem with old white men telling women what to do with their bodies.” Whenever I heard one of these statements from my university peers‚ I’d think‚ Here we go. I better get my boxing gloves on. I was friends with the classmates who raised these sentiments‚ so our conversations weren’t personal attacks but sincere back-and-forths on topics like abortion‚ the church‚ and gay marriage. But I often felt these conversations didn’t lead anywhere. My friends and I would simply walk away more sure of our own views. No hearts were changed. Oh well‚ I’d think. I want to be an evangelist‚ but I can only plant the seed. But as I’ve reflected on these conversations more recently‚ I’ve stopped and asked a question: Are these friendly conversations about difficult topics truly evangelism? My generation is marked by social media use and polarized beliefs. YouTube‚ Instagram‚ and TikTok are rampant with opinions about controversial topics like abortion‚ homosexuality‚ politics‚ climate change‚ and religion. It’s what Gen Zers like me routinely consume. As a result‚ I’ve fallen headfirst into a trap. I’m zealous to use and share the knowledge I’ve gathered from videos‚ podcasts‚ and articles. I want to defend the Bible and its values‚ and I can spend hours discussing various points with nonbelievers. But arguments alone‚ whether they’re friendly or “battles‚” aren’t evangelism. Instead‚ we should seek to win people for Christ‚ not just score points in a debate. True Heart of Evangelism It took me a while to learn this‚ but it seems so obvious now: most nonbelievers won’t agree with the implications of Christianity unless they first accept its basis. All hot topics of debate are insignificant in the face of what’s most important: because of God’s overwhelming love and grace‚ Christ Jesus came to die and save sinners (John 3:16–17; 1 Tim. 1:15). As Charles Spurgeon wrote‚ “We are not called to proclaim philosophy and metaphysics‚ but the simple gospel. Man’s fall‚ his need of a new birth‚ forgiveness through atonement‚ and salvation as the result of faith‚ these are our battle-ax and weapons of war.” I’d been regurgitating all my knowledge of controversial topics to people who first and foremost needed to know Christ and his purpose for coming to earth. I’d put the wisdom of man‚ which is folly‚ above the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 3:19; Prov. 2:6). In evangelism‚ we’re not called to present our wealth of knowledge. Christ is the true heart of evangelism. Yet when we debate trending topics‚ Christ is often removed from the center of our witness. Real Battle Christ is the true heart of evangelism. Evangelism is a battle. But we shouldn’t wage war as the world does. There’s a place for demolishing arguments‚ but not while depending on our own human knowledge. Rather‚ we’re to rely on the powerful weapons and wisdom of the Holy Spirit‚ looking not primarily to win the argument but to destroy any mental and relational obstacles that may be preventing people from knowing Christ. In this way‚ we capture others’ thoughts to draw them to him (2 Cor. 10:3–5). The real battle doesn’t involve the nonbeliever as the enemy‚ our knowledge as the weapon‚ or winning the argument as the prize. It’s a battle against the powers of darkness‚ and our only hope of defeating it is with the light of gospel truth (Eph. 6:12). The salvation of souls‚ received by grace through faith in Christ alone‚ is the prize (Luke 15:7). Walk Alongside Debates about Christianity aimed at anything other than knowing and showing Christ aren’t evangelism. They’re simply debates. I now see these as far from the same thing. In debate‚ we face the nonbeliever head-on‚ whereas in evangelism‚ we walk alongside them. I once heard a preacher I admire talking about evangelism. He was asked what he’d do if he had one hour to evangelize a nonbeliever. He said he’d spend the first 50 minutes listening and the last 10 sharing the simple truth of the gospel. Jesus could look at a person and know everything about him‚ but we don’t have that ability. To know someone’s heart‚ we must ask questions and listen to her responses (Prov. 18:13). Listening to know someone as opposed to merely answering her point by point goes against our debate culture. It demonstrates a desire to walk with someone for her sake and gives her a glimpse into Christ’s power in our lives (1 Thess. 1:4–5). Getting to know someone’s heart desires along with her preconceptions and misconceptions of Christ and Christianity can guide a friend to a place where‚ by God’s grace‚ she’ll be in a better position to receive the gospel when we share it. Look to Jesus Because we have direct access to our peers‚ God wants to use us to impart the gospel to them. We must be prepared to do so with gentleness and respect (1 Pet. 3:15–16). And to impart something‚ we must have it in the first place. We can’t introduce and intimately explain the Savior if we don’t know him ourselves (John 15:4‚ 5; Prov. 19:2). Listening demonstrates a desire to walk with someone for her sake and gives her a glimpse into Christ’s power in our lives. Yes‚ there will be times when controversial topics open a door for conversations about Christianity. But we shouldn’t use these opportunities to win arguments or showcase knowledge. We should rather use them to introduce Christ‚ the friend of sinners‚ as he’s revealed to us in his Word. Let’s strive to walk prayerfully and to fearlessly plant seeds‚ understanding that only God can change hearts (John 15:5; Ezek. 36:26). As you seek to share the gospel with nonbelievers‚ shift their—and your—eyes away from distracting battles toward the One who faithfully walks alongside you.

Abortion Pill Reversal Saved Her Baby Girl’s Life

Katelynn Perry sat in her bathtub doing Google searches on her phone. Was there a way to save her unborn baby? She had taken the first chemical abortion pill that day and had decided she was not going to take the rest.  After visiting Planned Parenthood‚ Perry says she “knew that taking that first pill was wrong‚” adding‚ “I shouldn’t have let them influence me.”   Perry already had four kids when she found out she was pregnant with her fifth child‚ and given the financial struggles she and her husband were facing‚ she had decided to visit Planned Parenthood to discuss her options.  “When I tried to ask questions‚ they were kind of shot down. They weren’t really answered in full‚” Perry said of her trip to the clinic. “They used a lot of medical terms that I didn’t understand.”  After taking the first abortion pill at Planned Parenthood‚ Perry was instructed to go to her local pharmacy to pick up the other pills to complete the abortion‚ but she decided she wouldn’t do that. Her Google searches led Perry to Heartbeat International’s Abortion Pill Rescue Network website. She called the number and spoke to a nurse who told her it was possible that her baby was still alive and could be saved. The nurse connected Perry with a pregnancy resource center about an hour away in Lynchburg‚ Virginia. When she arrived‚ the first step was an ultrasound to see whether the baby was still alive.  “We do the ultrasound; she still has a heartbeat‚” Perry said of her baby. The medical staff at the pro-life center explained to Perry how the abortion pill reversal works through a 12-week hormone therapy.  Today‚ Perry’s baby girl‚ Aubrey‚ is just over a year old‚ healthy and “the sweetest little girl you would ever meet‚” her mother says.  Perry joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share her story and inform other women that the abortion-reversal pill can save the life of the unborn.  Listen to the podcast below:  Have an opinion about this article?
