Bessent Promises ‘Several’ Trade Announcements Over ‘The Next 48 Hours’

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent promised on Monday that the Trump administration would make “several announcements in the next 48 hours” regarding President Donald Trump’s trade agenda. Bessent said during an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that the president is actively “trying to get everyone across the finish line” on agreements. Bessent’s comments come hours after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in an interview alongside Trump on Sunday, said that tariffs will take effect on August 1, pushing back the plan for Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs to hit countries around the world on July 9 after a 90-day reprieve. “What President Trump is concerned about is the quality of the deals, not the quantity,” Bessent said. “My mailbox was full last night with a lot of new offers, a lot of new proposals,” he added. “So it’s going to be a busy couple of days. But importantly, too, President Trump has said that the countries would not go back to the recipricol [tariff] rate until August 1.” .@SecScottBessent on trade negotiations: "We are going to have several announcements in the next 48 hours… What President Trump is concerned about is the quality of the deals, not the quantity… It's going to be a busy couple of days." pic.twitter.com/xBWFDoaP7l — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) July 7, 2025 The Treasury Secretary told CNN on Sunday that Trump plans to send letters to countries, warning them to “move things along” or tariffs will “boomerang back to your April 2 tariff level.” “So I think we’re going to see a lot of deals very quickly,” Bessent added. Trump is also ramping up pressure on countries that align with “anti-American” trade policies of the BRICS nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Ten countries have recently become “partner states” with BRICS, which could potentially lead to their inclusion as member nations. The 10 “partner states” include Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. “Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff,” Trump posted on Truth Social as the BRICS nations met in Rio de Janeiro. “There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” The stock market is down on Monday amid President Trump’s renewed push for trade. The Dow Jones Industrial Average futures dropped 70 points Monday morning, the S&P 500 futures fell 0.3%, and the Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.5%.

Morning Brief: Tragedy In Texas, Trump’s Big Win & The Mamdani Effect

Catastrophic flash floods kill dozens in Texas. What exactly is in Trump’s One Lovely Law? Plus, New Yorkers are beginning to wake up to the possibility of a socialist mayor. It’s Monday, July 7, and this is the news you need to know to start your day. Morning Wire is available on video! You can watch today’s episode here:     If you’d rather listen to your news, today’s edition of the Morning Wire podcast can be heard below:     Tragedy In Texas   Topline: Catastrophic flooding has killed at least 82 people in Central Texas, including 28 children. Officials describe the situation as a once-in-a-century event. Dozens are still missing in Central Texas after flash floods caused the Guadalupe River to surge early in the morning on Independence Day – an especially popular time for camping. In many cases, people didn’t realize the danger until the water had already reached their beds. Kerr County, west of Austin, was the hardest area hit – where the river rose 26 feet in just 45 minutes. The episode that has garnered the most national attention is the Camp Mystic case– a Christian, all-girls camp in Kerr County. Every year, hundreds of girls visit to camp by the river and participate in a spiritual retreat. The flood caught the camp by surprise, and dozens of campers and counselors were killed, and at least 11 girls are still missing. Hundreds of volunteers have turned out in each of the affected counties and are helping officials comb through the debris and mud for any sign of missing persons. Due to the flood damage to roads, helicopters have become indispensable.  “There’s about half a dozen helicopters with all volunteers,” Gary Heavin, a pilot with the disaster response charity organization Operation Helo, told The Daily Wire. “We’re flying National Guard out… fire department, all sorts of emergency rescue people.. They trudge along in the debris because a lot of times the bodies will be caught in the debris… hopefully, we also get to find people that are alive and bring them back.”  Heavin said they’ve also gotten some outside help from the federal government and Elon Musk. Musk sent Starlink devices to the impacted areas for use by first responders. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been on the ground to provide assistance wherever it’s needed. President Donald Trump also signed a disaster declaration on Sunday, making additional resources available for emergency response.   Inside The Big Bill   Topline: After months of heated debate, President Trump’s so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” is now the law of the land. President Trump’s July 4 deadline for passing his “Big, Beautiful Bill” looked implausible at the end of last week, because House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) had promised members they would have 72 hours to review the changes made by the Senate – but when it became clear that timeline would push the vote past Trump’s deadline, he changed course and started the vote on July 3, when it passed 218 to 214.  That allowed President Trump to sign his signature legislation from the White House lawn on Independence Day, complete with a band blasting patriotic tunes and a flyover from B-2 bombers — an apparent nod to last month’s strikes on Iran. President Trump has made it clear that he views this bill as a means of codifying many of his campaign promises and delivering to the American people what they voted for in November.  “We delivered no tax on tips, no tax on overtime and no tax on social security for our great seniors,” Trump said, claiming that the newly signed legislation is “the biggest bill of its kind ever done by far…It makes the child tax credit permanent for 40 million American families.” Among other things, the “Big, Beautiful Bill” allows taxpayers to write off interest payments on car loans, and it establishes new “Trump accounts” for babies born between 2025 and 28 — those will include a one-time $1000 federal contribution to an investment fund on the child’s behalf. From there, families can contribute up to $ 5,000 annually, and the funds can be withdrawn once the individual is 18.  The bill will put $46 billion towards the construction of the border wall, and tens of billions more towards deportation efforts.  In order to offset the massive tax cuts, the bill includes around a trillion dollars in reductions to entitlements like Medicaid over the next decade, and will add work requirements for able-bodied Medicaid applicants aged 18-64 – going forward, people in that cohort will have to work at least 80 hours a month to qualify, or prove that they’re actively looking for work, and once they’ve enrolled they’ll have to prove they still qualify for benefits every six months. Democrats say this will force millions of Americans off of Medicaid and cut funding to hospitals nationwide.  On the other side, Republicans say Medicaid has become bloated in recent years with folks who are taking advantage of the system. They note that Medicaid enrollment increased significantly during the COVID pandemic, when continuous enrollment was implemented. Eight million people were added to the program in the last four years alone, while disenrollments were put on pause.    The Mamdani Effect Topline: New York City elites are panicking about the prospect of Zohran Mamdani becoming mayor and enacting his socialist policies. A few weeks after his upset victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, critics of outspoken socialist Zohran Mamdani – from high-ranking Democrats and finance and tech figures to bodega owners and cops – are sounding the alarm about what his policies might do to America’s largest city. During the campaign, Mamdani focused on the high cost of living in New York City and proposed several schemes to bring it down, including, among other things, government-run grocery stores and rent control. Mamdani has also pledged to raise taxes on wealthier and “whiter” neighborhoods to fund his reforms, and has stated that he “[doesn’t] think billionaires should exist.” Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman is throwing his full endorsement and financial weight behind current Mayor Eric Adams. Ackman called Mamdani a socialist/communist and said his policies would be “catastrophic for NYC.” Previously, Ackman was considering funding a new challenger just to beat Mamdani and said he was ready to spend “hundreds of millions of dollars” backing a challenger. The tech elite are also panicking. On election night for the primary, New York-based venture capitalists and crypto exchange founders melted down on X, posting messages like, “New York City on the brink of becoming Gotham City.” The president of the Police Benevolent Association, Patrick Hendry, called Mamdani “anti-cop” and said he has an “extremist attitude and it’s going to scare other cops and they will go out the door.” In 2020, Mamdani was a vocal supporter of defunding the police. The NYPD is already having trouble recruiting and retaining officers — more than 1500 cops have quit this year — and with Mamdani’s anti-police stances, union officials are warning that his election would only make it harder to keep cops on the streets. NYC bodega owners have also expressed concerns that Mamdani’s proposal for government-run grocery stores will put them out of business.  “Most bodega owners are immigrants,” Fernando Mateo, spokesperson for the United Bodegas of America, said. “They come here to try to make a living and do the right thing by the city… if you’re able to infiltrate government into the private sector, you’re basically ruining the dreams and the spirits of all these small businesspeople who have risked everything they have, borrowed everything they could borrow to open their small business.”

Texas Pediatrician Fired After Saying ‘MAGA’ Flood Victims Got ‘What They Voted For’

The Texas pediatrician who mocked Trump voters after violent Texas floods, posting that victims deserve to “get what they voted for,” no longer works for her pediatric group. Over the weekend, Dr. Christina B. Propst , who had been employed by Blue Fish Pediatrics, posted on Facebook in a now-deleted message that she wished for the safety only of people who didn’t vote for MAGA.  “May all visitors, children, non-MAGA voters and pets be safe and dry,” she posted under Facebook user name, Chris Tina. “Kerr County MAGA voted to gut FEMA. They deny climate change. May they get what they voted for. Bless their hearts.” This is the sort of pediatric clinician employed at @BlueFishMD in Houston. The ethics, humanity and empathy illustrated here is unfathomable. pic.twitter.com/yW0TbEMGN7 — Dr. Lynn Fynn-derella? (@Fynnderella1) July 5, 2025 At least 80 people, including 28 children, have been declared dead from the raging flood that struck Central Texas on July 4. 10 girls from the all-girls Camp Mystic are still missing. “Two sisters, 13-year-old Blair and 11-year-old Brooke Harber, were killed in the Texas Hill Country floods and found with rosaries and their ‘hands locked together,’ their family said.” Newsweek reported. On Sunday, Blue Fish Pediatrics issued the following statement: This past weekend, we were made aware of a social media comment from one of our physicians. The individual is no longer employed by Blue Fish Pediatrics. As we previously mentioned in our original statement, we strongly condemn the comments that were made in that post. That post does not reflect the values, standards, or mission of Blue Fish Pediatrics. We do not support or condone any statement that politicizes tragedy, diminishes human dignity, or fails to clearly uphold compassion for every child and family, regardless of background or beliefs. We continue to extend our full support to the families and the surrounding communities who are grieving, recovering, and searching for hope. Meanwhile, Democrats tried to seize upon the tragedy to impugn the Trump administration. Arch-leftist Connecticut senator Chris Murphy posted on X, “Accurate weather forecasting helps avoid fatal disasters. There are consequences to Trump’s brainless attacks on public workers, like meteorologists.” Accurate weather forecasting helps avoid fatal disasters. There are consequences to Trump’s brainless attacks on public workers, like meteorologists. https://t.co/CRteXdFvL0 — Chris Murphy ? (@ChrisMurphyCT) July 5, 2025 There is no indication that the weather service failed ahead of the floods. As the Associated Press noted, “The National Weather Service sent out a series of flash flood warnings in the early hours Friday before issuing flash flood emergencies — a rare alert notifying of imminent danger.” According to Jason Runyen, a meteorologist in the National Weather Service office, the local weather service office had extra staff on duty when the storms hit. They normally have two forecasters when the weather is clear but had up to five when the storms came. “There were extra people in here that night, and that’s typical in every weather service office — you staff up for an event and bring people in on overtime and hold people over,” Runyen said.

Read a New Murderbot Story for Free, Right After the Season Finale

Books Murderbot Read a New Murderbot Story for Free, Right After the Season Finale The new novelette will be released on Reactor immediately following the final episode of AppleTV+’s Murderbot By Reactor | Published on July 7, 2025 Comment 0 Share New Share We’re excited to reveal a brand new Murderbot universe novelette by series author Martha Wells—and you can read it here for free immediately after the season finale airs on AppleTV+! The new novelette “Rapport: Friendship, Solidarity, Communion, Empathy” will go live here on Reactor at 10:00 PM ET on Thursday, July 10th. It can be read as a standalone story for anyone who has finished Artificial Condition, the second book in The Murderbot Diaries. In “Rapport” we catch up with Peri (short for Perihelion) and learn a bit more about what this galaxy does to people and the machine intelligences that have to deal with them…. Here’s a sneak peek! Peri’s anger was made of ice and steel, but it thought at speeds that a human mind couldn’t match, in multiple directions at once. It was incapable of acting on impulse, in conversation or in any other way. This wasn’t even you getting annoyed. With just a hint of amusement in its tone, Peri said, What gave me away? Iris let out a breath. The admission was a good first step. You don’t jump to wrong conclusions like a human. It said, I’ll have to work on that. Iris winced. It would, too. Remind me not to critique your performance again. I value your input, Iris. Iris absently started to pace. She was too tired and jumpy to play this game right now. Is it something you can tell me at some point? It’s just that I’m worried about you. And I think I’m not the only one. Our dads have noticed, too. She hesitated, then tried to lighten the mood. You aren’t evolving into a new being, or something, are you? It was an in-joke for their department, that there were always popular press articles about advanced MIs transcending their programming and becoming gods. Peri usually liked the joke, because it gave it a chance to be mean about stupid people. This time, it said, Iris, did you sustain damage to your neural tissue? She let out her breath. Come on, that’s your favorite joke. You’re really scaring me now. What’s wrong? Did something happen? Peri was silent for six whole seconds. Then it said, Explaining would in effect be violating a confidence. Want more Murderbot while you wait? Check out “Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory” — a Murderbot short story set after the events of Exit Strategy! When Orcas Strike Back

Column SFF Bestiary When Orcas Strike Back In 2020, something strange started happening off the coast of Spain… By Judith Tarr | Published on July 7, 2025 Photo by Vidar Nordli-Mathisen [via Unsplash] Comment 0 Share New Share Photo by Vidar Nordli-Mathisen [via Unsplash] In 2020, something strange started happening off the coast of Spain. Orcas were attacking boats and in some cases sinking them. Most of the boats were sailing yachts, 30 to 50 feet (9 to 15 meters) long, and the orcas tended to aim for the rudders, though they were also chasing after boats and ramming them. These attacks have continued for years and run up in the hundreds. They’ve occurred as far south as the northern coast of Africa and as far north as the Shetland Islands. They’re still happening. What is going on here? In spite of their nickname, killer whales, and their role as apex predators who can take down a great white shark, no wild orca has ever been recorded attacking, let alone killing a human. One speculation, that they’re taking revenge on humans for damaging their environment, doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. If that’s what they’re doing, why aren’t they going for the humans instead of their boats? Orca experts have a couple of theories. They’ve identified three pods that have been going after boats, the largest of which is led by the matriarch Gladis Lamari. These orcas’ territory is centered around Gibraltar and up toward the Bay of Biscay. One possibility is that the matriarch was in labor and in pain, and a yacht just happened to be there when she needed to take it out on something. Which is fine as a one-off, but how did it blow up into hundreds of attacks, multiple attackers, and no apparent end in sight? Orcas learn by observation. If one does something, the others will imitate her. That still doesn’t explain why ramming boats and breaking rudders became a years-long habit, game, crusade, whatever it is. Maybe it is a game. Many of the perpetrators appear to be on the younger side. Are the teenagers wilding? Is it an initiation rite? A hazing ritual? A contest? Are they going after rudders as part of the game, because they’re these mobile objects sticking out of the bottom of the boats and offering a convenient target? Orcas are highly intelligent and extremely social. We’ve discovered that they use tools. A population of orcas on the other side of the world from Gibraltar, the Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest in the Salish Sea, have been observed using stalks of bull kelp to massage one another’s skin. They play games with kelp, too, draping it over their heads and playing keep-away with fronds, but this kicks it up a notch. An orca will insert the stalk between itself and a podmate of any age or gender and wiggle and rub back and forth. They seem to be using it to exfoliate. Tool use is one of the indicators of high intelligence. There’s something else, too, that’s catching the attention of orca experts, and it’s maybe the most remarkable thing we’ve seen. Over the past couple of decades, orcas have been known to offer food to humans. It’s not restricted to a single pod or regional population. It’s happened all over the world. Orcas will approach a human in the water or in a boat or even on the shore, and offer a piece of fish. If the human refuses, they may repeat the offer. It’s not accidental. It’s clearly intentional. Is it altruism? Attempt to communicate? Manipulation of some sort—trying to train the human? Are orcas trying to make some sort of connection? Orcas share food with each other within their pods. It may be they’re trying to invite humans into their world or their culture. Maybe it’s a peace offering. A form of diplomacy. An experiment—to see what the weird little land animal will do next. Maybe the attacks on boats aren’t attacks. Maybe they’re attempts to communicate. They may be trying to get the boats to join in a race or a game of tag. Orcas will grab each other’s fins with their teeth; if one of them is sick or injured, they’ll pull her up to the surface and support her there, and keep her from sinking back down. Maybe they’re grabbing rudders to try to get the boats’ attention. What it’s not reading as, to experts who understand orcas (as far as humans can at this point), is hostility. The boats may be doing something that sets the orcas off, either in play or in some form of annoyance or frustration, and it’s probably become a fad of sorts to chase and ram them, but it’s not about the humans. They’re not out to get revenge on the species that’s burning up the planet. In fact, when they do interact directly, it seems they come in peace, and bearing gifts.[end-mark] The post When Orcas Strike Back appeared first on Reactor.
