WASHINGTON—Vice President JD Vance argued Monday that Americans forced to compete with illegal immigrants for housing in the United States are shouldering an unfair burden. Vance spoke on Monday afternoon at the National League of Cities Congressional Conference in Washington, D.C., where he delivered brief remarks on the correlation between illegal immigration and the housing crisis. Vance argued that in America today, it takes almost twice the average family’s income simply to afford a new home. “That’s just not acceptable or sustainable,” the vice president said. “We want Americans to be able to afford the American Dream of home ownership,” he continued. “One of the drivers of increased housing demand, we know, is that we have got a lot of people over the last four years, who have come into the country illegally,” Vance explained. “And that’s something we have to work on, if we want to meaningfully reduce the cost of housing too.” Vance continued: “Just think about this: If you allow 20 million people to compete with American citizens for the cost of homes, you are going to have a large and frankly, completely preventable spike in the demand for housing. And that is what we, of course, have seen, because while we made it a little bit hard to build homes in this country, over the last four years, we’ve also unfortunately made it way too easy for people to compete against American citizens for the precious homes that are in our country to begin with.” Vance emphasized that the immigration policies of the past decade have made it “far too easy” for non-citizens to compete with Americans for housing, arguing: “There’s a clear link — more mass immigration, higher housing prices. It’s hurting working families across this country.” “You see a very consistent relationship between a massive increase in immigration and a massive increase in housing prices. And we have to be honest about that,” he argued. This comment was greeted by heckling from a person in the crowd, who shouted something unintelligible. “I see one of our nice representatives out here wants to actually continue to flood the country with illegal immigrants, making your communities and cities unaffordable,” he joked with a smile, a comment which received applause from the crowd. The vice president then told the protestor: “But ma’am, with all respect, one of the reasons why we’re doing what we’re doing is because we want to make it more affordable for Americans to live.” “That is one of the reasons why we’re doing what we’re doing,” he added.

I.C. Norcom High School senior Alaila Everett made headlines when, during a relay event at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 3 Indoor Championships, she hit Brookville junior Kaelen Tucker over the head with her baton. In the days since, amid a wave of backlash against her, Everett has claimed that her baton got “stuck” behind Tucker’s back and that she did not strike her on purpose. The impact of the blow was such that, in addition to falling out of the race and off the track, Tucker suffered a concussion and may have sustained a skull fracture. “After a couple times of hitting her, my baton got stuck behind her back like this, and it rolled up her back. I lost my balance when I pumped my arms again. She got hit,” Everett claimed when interviewed by local news outlet WAVY. Everett also complained that people were responding to her actions without viewing it from multiple angles: “It’s like they are going off of one angle.” “Everybody has feelings, so you’re physically hurt, but you’re not thinking of my mental, right?” Everett continued. “They are assuming my character, calling me ghetto and racial slurs, death threats … all of this off of a nine-second video.” Everett’s mother agreed, although she did not base her assessment on any video at all. “I didn’t have to see a first video, second video or tenth video. I know 100 percent that she would never do that to nobody,” she said. Tucker’s mother, Tamarrow Tucker, also spoke with a local news outlet and said that she would have liked to see an apology. “No apologies. No coaches. No athlete. No anything. Even if it was an accident, which I don’t believe it was … nothing,” she told a local ABC News affiliate. Everett and her relay team were disqualified for interfering with another runner. The VHSL also released a statement to Fox New Digital, saying, in part, “The actions taken by the meet director to disqualify the runner were appropriate and correct. We thoroughly review every instance like this that involves player safety with the participating schools. The VHSL membership has always made it a priority to provide student-athletes with a safe environment for competition.”

Road crews got to work on Monday destroying a massive street mural with painted lettering that read, “Black Lives Matter,” leading directly to the White House in Washington, D.C. In videos and pictures that surfaced on X, construction workers with large construction equipment such as skip loaders started jack-hammering the 35-foot bright yellow letters of Black Lives Matter Plaza, which were initially constructed along 16th Street NW, just down the street from the White House, following the death of George Floyd in 2020. Fox News’s Katie Pavlich wrote on X, “Black Lives Matter Plaza is being dismantled in Washington D.C.” Her post included videos of a machine tearing into the brick road and breaking up the bright yellow mural with the words “Black Lives Matter” painted on the strip of road that went for blocks.  In another shot, a construction worker uses some kind of tool to continue breaking up the road. Libs of TikTok wrote, “After Trump demanded action and threatened to withhold funding: – DC cleared out homeless encampments last week – Black Lives Matter Plaza torn down today Trump is making our Nation’s capital safe and beautiful again!” One viral post shared on social media read, “Right now: work crews just North of the White House to dismantle Black Lives Matter Plaza, 4.5 years since receiving this designation by DC local government. DC Mayor Bowser agreed to retire BLM Plaza following threats to federal funding from Congress.” Several accounts noted that “America is Healing,” with one post that read, “NOW: Crews have been deployed to Black Lives Matter Plaza outside the White House to DISMANTLE it. America is FINALLY healing!” One video captured the machines ripping out the numerous black poles in the road that lined both sides of the pathway. The dismantling of the BLM Plaza comes after Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) proposed the city would lose federal funds from the government if it was not renamed to “Liberty Plaza,” as previously noted. Following the comments, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser agreed to take apart the two-block-long plaza. Bowser later shared a post on X that read, “The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a very painful period, but now we can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference.” Work will soon get underway to reconstruct the area with a project dedicated to celebrating the country’s 250th Anniversary next year, the Free Beacon noted.
