A 31-year-old New York City Police Department officer died Monday after he was reportedly shot by a career criminal during a traffic stop in Queens‚ according to law enforcement. Jonathan Diller‚ a husband and father who had served three years on the force‚ conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle where a man identified as 34-year-old Guy Rivera was sitting in the passenger seat. As police attempted to get Rivera to vacate the car‚ he allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Diller in the stomach‚ The New York Post reported. He was also in prison from 2011 to 2014 for first-degree assault. Rivera was shot in the back when police returned fire following the shooting. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital‚ where he remains in stable condition. Lindy Jones‚ who was identified as the 41-year-old driver of the vehicle‚ also has a criminal record and was arrested on gun charges last April. College student Riley Strain’s death was likely “accidental‚” according to the Metro Nashville Police Department‚ with no apparent signs of foul play. A preliminary autopsy‚ attended by an MNPD detective‚ made the unofficial determination‚ The Tennessean reported. A toxicology report is still pending. “Detective attended the autopsy examination‚” MNPD spokesperson Kris Mumford told the outlet. “Continues to appear accidental.” Strain was last seen weeks ago walking in the direction of the Cumberland River‚ and his body was removed from the river around 7:30 a.m. on Friday‚ the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department announced on X. “BREAKING: The body of Riley Strain was recovered from the Cumberland River in West Nashville this morning‚ approximately 8 miles from downtown‚” the MNPD wrote. “No foul play-related trauma was observed. Nashville police said Strain was seen at 9:52 p.m. on Gay Street‚ according to the Post. A local homeless man also claimed to see a “very‚ very intoxicated” Strain nearly fall into the river‚ the Post reported previously. The final ping on Strain’s phone came between 10 and 10:30 p.m. near the sheriff’s office and the river‚ the Post reported. His final text was sent to a woman he was seeing‚ which said‚ “Good lops [sic]” in response to her asking how he was doing on the trip. It is unclear what Strain meant by the text. The court clerk accused of jury tampering by Alex Murdaugh’s attorneys has resigned‚ nearly two months after the allegations failed to get Murdaugh a new trial. Rebecca Hill‚ who has denied any wrongdoing‚ stepped down on Monday and said she would not run for re-election‚ CNN reported. Hill held a press conference to announce her decision. She said she was proud of her work as a court clerk‚ including her management of “one of the biggest trials in South Carolina history‚” referring to the Murdaugh trial. Murdaugh was convicted last year of the murders of his wife‚ Maggie‚ and youngest son‚ Paul. Hill said during her press conference that the trial caused her “to reflect upon decisions involving my stay in the office of the clerk of court.” “As we fix our eyes forward‚ I would like to announce also that my resignation as clerk of court will be effective immediately‚” she added. In January‚ Murdaugh was denied a new trial based on his allegations against Hill‚ even though the judge sharply criticized Hill for her actions during the proceedings. South Carolina Judge Jean Toal denied Murdaugh’s bid for a new trial while condemning Hill in her remarks about her ruling‚ CNN reported at the time. Toal said Hill was “attracted by the siren call of celebrity” and that she “wanted to write a book about the trial and expressed that as early as November 2022‚ long before the trial began.” Hill has denied the allegations against her‚ but Toal determined that Hill had told another clerk and others of “her desire for a guilty verdict because it would sell books.” “She made comments about Murdaugh’s demeanor as he testified and she made some of those comments before he testified to at least one and maybe more jurors‚” Toal said‚ according to CNN. “Did clerk of court Hill’s comments have any impact on the verdict of the jury? I find that the answer to this question is no.” Toal added that the jurors determined Murdaugh to be guilty “without fear or favor” but that Hill “allowed public attention of the moment to overcome her duty.” “I simply do not believe that the authority of our South Carolina Supreme Court requires a new trial in a very lengthy trial such as this on the strength of some fleeting and foolish comments by a publicity-influenced clerk of courts‚” Toal said‚ according to CNN. Toal further explained that she had personally interviewed each juror and that 11 of them said that they either hadn’t heard any comments from Hill or‚ of those who had‚ that those comments did not affect their judgment. The 12th juror‚ according to Toal‚ was “ambivalent” during testimony and only said she felt pressure from other jurors. That juror‚ according to NPR‚ testified that Hill made comments that indicated Hill thought Murdaugh was guilty. In his closing arguments‚ Murdaugh’s attorney Jim Griffin cited case law while arguing that any communication from court staff to jurors is considered prejudicial and that the defense proved Hill had prejudicial communications with jurors. He argued that “one of those jurors says it influenced my verdict. How is that not prejudice?” Murdaugh has denied killing his wife and son but pleaded guilty to various financial crimes and was sentenced to 27 years in prison. He still has appeals available for the murder convictions.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said Tuesday morning that eight people were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore when a container ship rammed into one of its supports‚ causing the bridge to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River below. Wiedefeld said two of the eight people have been accounted for as emergency responders‚ including dive teams‚ continue their search and rescue operation for at least six others. State and federal authorities have maintained that all evidence in the bridge collapse “points to an accident.” “The preliminary investigation points to an accident. We haven’t seen any credible evidence of a terrorist attack‚” Maryland Democratic Governor Wes Moore said. Moore confirmed that the container ship’s crew issued a mayday and said the ship was experiencing issues with its power‚ Justin Fenton of the Baltimore Banner reported. Moore said the crew’s mayday signal meant transportation officials were able to stop more traffic from crossing over the bridge before the ship struck it. “These people are heroes. They saved lives last night‚” Moore said. The 1.6-mile-long bridge is part of Interstate 695‚ also known as the Baltimore Beltway‚ and is a major crossing of the Patapsco River. Earlier in the day‚ Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said two people were rescued from the water; one person was unharmed‚ while the second was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Wiedefeld also confirmed in a press conference that contractors were working on the bridge at the time of the collapse but did not say how many workers were believed to be on the structure when it was struck by the container ship. Actress Christina Ricci says she struggled to get close to her young daughter while splitting her time between her home and Canada for work. The 44-year-old actress spoke about what happened during a recent appearance on the “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty” podcast. Ricci shares daughter Cleopatra‚ 2‚ with her husband Mark Hampton. She also has a 9-year-old son‚ Freddie‚ with ex-husband James Heerdegen. “Last year I was commuting back and forth to Vancouver for ‘Yellowjackets.’ [Cleo] didn’t know me. We had no bond. So that was very upsetting‚” Ricci explained.  “My kids do not like it when I travel. When I’m away‚ I try to take my son with me as much as I can‚” she added. Two men who had survived the Hamas October 7 massacre said they were verbally abused and detained by UK Border Force Officers at Manchester Airport on Sunday. Neria Sharabi and his brother Daniel‚ whom Channel 12 reported saved dozens of lives during the massacre‚ were reportedly held by border officers after the officers saw their Israeli passports. The two men told The Jerusalem Post that they informed the police they had come to Great Britain to speak to the Manchester Jewish community about the massacre in order to raise funds for their non-profit aiding victims of the massacre. China is the main driver behind fentanyl being smuggled into the United States by Mexican drug cartels‚ according to investigative journalist and author Peter Schweizer. Schweizer‚ author of “Blood Money: Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye While China Kills Americans‚” discussed the crisis on “Fentanyl: America’s Silent Epidemic‚” part of a DailyWire+ series on The Divided States of Biden. The author said the fentanyl trade that contributes to tens of thousands of American deaths every year begins in China.  “They’re the senior partner. The drug cartels are really the junior partner in the fentanyl trade‚” Schweizer said of the Chinese regime led by President Xi Jinping. Ninety percent of fentanyl precursor chemicals shipped from China to Mexico arrive via Mexico’s Port of Manzanillo. The port is run by a Chinese company‚ according to Schweizer. From the port‚ the chemicals are taken to a town in northern Mexico close to the U.S. border. About 2‚000 Chinese workers work in cartel labs to craft the precursor chemicals into fentanyl and then the fentanyl into pills resembling common drugs such as Vicodin or Adderall. “Now the drug cartels want to distribute their product in the United States. What do they do? They use Chinese apps. They use Chinese communications devices because they know that China will not share that information with U.S. law enforcement‚” Schweizer said. Money from the drug trade is then laundered through the Chinese financial system. “The Mexican drug cartels now launder their money in Chinese state-owned banks‚ and‚ according to our government‚ they use Chinese students in the United States on education visas to do this‚” Schweizer said.
