Steve Cropper: The ClassicRockHistory.com Interview

At 83-years-old, Steve Cropper’s effervescent personality is only matched by the smoothness of his sweet, Southern drawl. And, of course, his blues-laden licks that he’s scattered across dozens of records for over fifty years. Indeed, there’s a reason that Cropper, a burly yet unassuming man born on a farm in Dora, Missouri, before spending his formative years in Memphis, Tennessee, is known as “The Colonel.” Iconic records recorded in support of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, John Prine, Rod Stewart, and Roy Orbison, to name more than a few, tell the The post Steve Cropper: The ClassicRockHistory.com Interview appeared first on ClassicRockHistory.com.

South African Researchers Test Use of Nuclear Technology to Curb Rhino Poaching

In South Africa, biologists and scientists have developed a novel way of disincentivizing poaching that will allow rhinos to keep hold of their horns. Previously it was widespread practice to capture and de-horn rhinos to disincentivize poachers from killing them, but the lack of a horn deeply interfered with the animals’ social structures. Instead, rhinos […] The post South African Researchers Test Use of Nuclear Technology to Curb Rhino Poaching appeared first on Good News Network.

Revealing Carl’s Doomsday Scenario and The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Matt Dinniman

Books cover reveal Revealing Carl’s Doomsday Scenario and The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Matt Dinniman Two new print editions from the Dungeon Crawler Carl series By Reactor | Published on July 2, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share We’re thrilled to share the covers of new print editions of Carl’s Doomsday Scenario and The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook—part of Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Carl’s Doomsday Scenario publishes September 24th, with The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook following on October 22nd—both books contain bonus material, and will be available from Ace, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Read an excerpt from the first book in the series. “Greetings, Crawlers! The training levels have concluded. Now the games may truly begin.”The aliens have come, and they’ve transformed Earth into a multi-level, video-game-like dungeon. It’s the newest season of the galaxy’s most-watched gameshow, Dungeon Crawler World. Now on the third floor, Carl and Donut have to fight harder than ever. They’ve already proven that a Coast Guard vet and once-and-forever feline royalty are an almost unstoppable team. Their ratings are off the chart. The watchers can’t get enough. But the dungeon gets more dangerous each day, and now there’s a whole new problem to deal with. Quests. They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered women rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose. Can Carl and Donut solve the mystery in time? And can Carl finally find some pants? Carl and Donut have survived so far, but this fourth level is unlike anything they could imagine. The Iron Tangle: an impossibly complicated subway system tied together into a knot of trains of all kinds, from classic steam engines to sleek modern cars. Up is down. Down is up. Close is far. The cars are filled with monsters, the railway stations aren’t always what they seem, and the exit is perpetually just a few stops away. The top ten list is populated, and Carl and Donut have made it. But that popularity comes with a price. They each now have a bounty on their head. They have to work with other crawlers to solve the puzzle of the floor, but how can they do that when they don’t know who to trust? The secret to unraveling it all may be hidden in the pages of a seemingly-useless book.Welcome, Crawlers. Welcome to the fourth floor of the dungeon. Kinkajou – A Rainforest Mammal – Rescued From Highway In Washington

A highway rest stop in Yakima, Washington, had an unusual visitor recently, with a mammal called a kinkajou (Potos flavus) – usually found in the forests of the Neotropics – being found by Interstate 82 in the Pacific Northwest state. The animal was rescued by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police officers on June 23, and is currently being cared for by Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium (PDZA)."Why was it at our east Selah Creek Rest Area over the wknd? We have no idea,” Washington State Department of Transportation East posted on X. “We don't know if it was dropped off or escaped.” The little guy is very much a mystery at this point, with PDZA telling IFLScience: "We do not know yet where he came from."The kinkajou "underwent a comprehensive wellness exam on June 27," PDZA continued. "He has a good appetite and zoo staff are feeding him a full and healthy diet. We are awaiting the results of diagnostic testing, including comprehensive blood work, to get a complete assessment of his health."The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) states that these mammals are found in forests across Surinam, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, French Guiana, and Brazil – a far cry from a rest stop in Washington. “This young kinkajou’s survival is a testament to the collaborative efforts of state wildlife law enforcement and the zoo, highlighting the dangers of the illegal pet trade,” PDZA said in a statement.Although the kinkajou is classed as Least Concern by the IUCN, they state that “Potential threats include deforestation, capture for the pet trade and hunting for its meat and pelt.”      IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.Kinkajous are members of the Procyonidae family, much like raccoons, and are known for their love of honey. They are one of the two carnivores in the world that have a prehensile tail, sharing the honor with the popcorn-scented binturong. They can also turn their feet backward to help them scurry up and down trees, dubbed a “nice adaptation to have” in a video of an examination of the kinkajou found in Washington posted by PDZA.    The kinkajou was immediately quarantined upon arrival at the zoo. PDZA’s Head Veterinarian Dr Karen Wolf said that the little guy is in “fair health overall” but is “very thin, weighing only 2.5 pounds [1.14 kilograms],” with males of the species usually weighing 1.4 to 4.5 kilograms (3 to 10 pounds). The zoo is currently working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to find this misplaced mammal a forever home.

Late Night DNC: 94 Percent of Late Night Guests Are Liberal

In the nine months since the end of the writers’ strike, the late night comedy shows have remained remarkably consistent, as a NewsBusters study determined 94 percent of their political guests have been liberal. The end of the strike coincided with the start of the 2024 presidential election campaign and MRC analysts found that in the nine months from October 2, 2023, to June 27, 2024, liberal guests outnumbered conservative guests by a count of 137 to 8.  The study looked at the five daily late night comedy shows: ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.  MRC analysts also divided the guests into two categories: partisan officials and then journalists and celebrities. When it came to partisan officials, the count was 34 Democrats to 5 Republicans. Colbert led with the greatest cumulative discrepancy at 14-1. Kimmel’s count was 7-0, Meyer’s was 3-0, and Fallon’s was 1-0. The Daily Show came in at 9-4. In his return to The Daily Show, Jon Stewart’s politician count has actually been two Republicans versus one Democrat over 17 episodes. However, one of those two was former RNC chairman and current co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, Frank Fahrenkopf, who was on to react to Presidents Trump and Biden cutting the Commission out of the 2024 debate cycle. The other was former Rep. Ken Buck. The other two Daily Show Republicans were Rep. Nancy Mace and former presidential candidate Nikki Haley. Colbert’s lone Republican was former Rep. Liz Cheney, who, unlike former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, actually managed to still sound like a Republican at times. On the Democratic side, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jasmine Crockett, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and former Obama staffers turned Pod Save America podcasters Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor all appeared twice. For journalists and celebrities, the results were 104 liberals to 3 conservatives. Again, Colbert was the most tilted with a tally of 34-0. The Daily Show came in second at 29-1, while Meyers’s came in at 21-0, Fallon’s was 11-1, and Kimmel’s was 7-1. Stewart’s journalist and celebrity count has been 12-0. The definition of a conservative could be just anybody who was not a liberal for a moment. The three men were comedian Bill Burr, Dr. Phil, and author Jonathan Haidt, who appeared on Kimmel, Fallon, and The Daily Show, hosted by Jordan Klepper, respectively. When it came to journalists and media figures, the outlets represented were naturally all liberal: 1. MSNBC (18) 2. CNN (12) 3. HBO (8) 4. NBC (7) T5. Comedy Central (6) T5. CBS (6) T5. ABC (6) 8. New Yorker (3) T9. The Atlantic (2) T9. PBS (2) T11. Economist (1) T11. Bloomberg (1) T11. The Intercept (1) T11. ESPN (1) T11. New York Times (1) T11. ProPublica (1) Fellow late night comedian John Oliver of HBO was the most frequent guest, with seven appearances. MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, Meyers himself, CBS’s Gayle King, and CNN’s Jake Tapper each appeared three times. Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki, Willie Geist, and Rachel Maddow, CNN’s Anderson Cooper, The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng, CBS’s John Dickerson, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, historian Yuval Noah Harari, NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, and PBS’s Christiane Amanpour each appeared twice. A complete breakdown can be found here. This was the fourth MRC late night guest count study since September 2022, and over the course of the subsequent 20 months, liberals and Democrats have outnumbered conservatives 283-12, or 96 percent liberal, and comes as Kimmel and Colbert have hosted fundraising events for President Joe Biden’s re-election. Kathryn Hahn, who performed at the Kimmel-Biden fundraiser, will also guest host Jimmy Kimmel Live! from July 8-10. Notes and Methodology: The study ran from October 2 through June 27. Journalists were defined as either liberal or conservative, regardless of the segment’s subject matter. A celebrity was defined as either a current late night host if that host was on to be interviewed, political activist, or anyone famous who discussed politics or a religious project. If a celebrity is known to have strong political beliefs, but did not discuss them, they were not included. People who were partisan officials (i.e. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adam Kinzinger, and Jen Psaki), but who now have other jobs are counted as celebrities and journalists, with the exception of the cast of Pod Save America because they have their own, unaffiliated show. Guests were labeled based on what they said rather than any label typically associated with them. Therefore, Schwarzenegger, Cassidy Hutchinson, and Kinzinger are considered to be liberals or Democrats, while Liz Cheney, Jonathan Haidt, Bill Burr, and Dr. Phil are considered conservatives or Republicans. A politician was defined as any currently or previously elected American office holder, White House staffer, cabinet secretary, their spouse, or any of their children who were on to discuss political matters.
