Next Season of Black Mirror Will See the Return of the USS Callister

News Black Mirror Next Season of Black Mirror Will See the Return of the USS Callister Infinite virtual space awaits By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on March 14‚ 2024 icon-comment 0 Share New Share Twitter Facebook Pinterest RSS Feed One of the most popular episodes of Black Mirror was season four’s “USS Callister.” In it‚ a CTO of a tech company named Daly (Jesse Plemons) escapes via VR to a Star Trek-like starship that he commands. All well and good‚ I suppose‚ except Daly stole DNA from his co-workers (including parts played by Cristin Milioti‚ Jimmi Simpson‚ and Michaela Coel) and created sentient genetic clones inside the program—prisoners to his every whim. The 74-minute episode had a definitive ending‚ but today‚ Netflix shared (via Deadline) that the seventh season of the anthology series will see another episode centered around the surviving characters. “USS Callister will return… Robert Daly is dead‚ but for the crew of the USS Callister‚ their problems are just beginning‚” said a teaser Netflix released in London at their See What’s Next Event. The original episode was directed by Toby Haynes and written by Charlie Brooker‚ who is helming the seventh season of Black Mirror along with Annabel Jones. No news yet on who will pen the upcoming episode featuring the USS Callister again‚ but odds are good it will be Brooker. We also don’t know what challenges the digital survivors will face—when we last saw them‚ they had escaped the confines of Daly’s pocket universe and were free to explore the virtual Infinity that exists outside it. Where we’ll meet up with them on their adventures is uncertain‚ but odds are good it will be an engaging-yet-disturbing story‚ as most Black Mirror episodes are. In the meantime‚ we can watch the first six seasons of Black Mirror‚ including “USS Callister‚” on Netflix. Would-Be Homeowners Need 80% More Income to Buy Than 4 Years Ago‚ Study Finds

The housing market is not immune from inflationary woes as buyers’ purchasing power has significantly diminished in four years. Homebuyers in 2024 need 80% more income to purchase a home than they did in 2020‚ according to a new report by Zillow. “The income needed to comfortably afford a home is up 80% since 2020‚ while median income has risen 23% in that time‚” the report states. That equates to $47‚000 more than four years ago. “Home shoppers today need to make more than $106‚000 to comfortably afford a home‚” according to the report. “That is 80% more than in January 2020.” A monthly mortgage payment for a typical U.S. home has nearly doubled since January 2020‚ the report notes‚ up 96.4% to $2‚188. The calculations are based on a 10% down payment. Home values also increased more than 42% in the past four years‚ with the typical home nationwide worth roughly $343‚000‚ according to Zillow’s January market report. Mortgage rates in January 2020 were 3%‚ the report notes. By February 2024‚ they are closer to 7%. While costs have increased‚ wages have not. In 2020‚ a household income of $59‚000 a year “could comfortably afford the monthly mortgage on a typical U.S. home‚ spending no more than 30% of its income with a 10% down payment‚” the report notes. “That was below the U.S. median income of about $66‚000‚ meaning more than half of American households had the financial means to afford homeownership.” Four years later‚ that analysis no longer holds true. Today‚ roughly $106‚500 is needed to comfortably afford a mortgage payment‚ the report states‚ “well above what a typical U.S. household earns each year‚ estimated at about $81‚000.” In seven major housing markets‚ a minimum household income of $200‚000 is needed to comfortably afford a typical home‚ the report notes. The report’s analysis was based on quarterly median household income from the American Community Survey‚ Moody’s Analytics‚ and the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Cost Index. The findings were announced as total household debt reached a record $17.5 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2023‚ according to a Federal Reserve Bank of New York report. Mortgage debt increased by $112 billion in Q4 2023 to reach $12.25 trillion. Balances on home equity lines of credit increased by $11 billion‚ the seventh consecutive quarterly increase after Q1 2022. There are currently $360 billion in aggregate outstanding balances‚ the Fed states. Credit card debt reached a record $1.13 trillion in 2023‚ increasing by $50 billion‚ or 4.6% over the year‚ the report notes. Other personal debt‚ including retail cards and consumer loans‚ grew by $25 billion. Auto loan debt increased by $12 billion to $1.61 trillion‚ “continuing an upward trajectory seen since 2011.” At the same time‚ car insurance rates surged 26% nationwide over the past year and are expected to remain elevated until 2025‚ according to a Bankrate report. LGBTQ Orgs That Push Child Gender Transitions Silent as England Bans Puberty Blockers for Kids

Prominent LGBTQ organizations that push so-called gender-affirming care for children have yet to weigh in on the news this week that England is banning puberty blockers as treatment for children experiencing gender dysphoria. England’s National Health Service declared that there is not enough evidence of “safety and clinical effectiveness” for children and young people to take puberty blockers to treat gender dysphoria. “Puberty blockers (gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogues) are not available to children and young people for gender incongruence or gender dysphoria because there is not enough evidence of safety and clinical effectiveness‚” the NHS notes on its site. The announcement is a major development in the battle over gender ideology and its effects on children. Proponents of protecting children from irreversible surgeries have praised England’s decision and urged the United States to follow England’s example. Curiously enough‚ some of the top organizations that push “gender-affirming care”—the leftist euphemism used to describe transgender surgeries‚ hormones‚ and puberty blockers—have not said anything at all. The American Civil Liberties Union is one of the most vocal pro-transgender organizations in the country. The ACLU has repeatedly sued over state laws protecting young people from irreversible transgender sex-change attempts. BREAKING: We're suing Texas over their ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth.— ACLU (@ACLU) July 13‚ 2023 “We’ll never stop fighting for trans youth and their families to get the medical care they need‚” the ACLU promised in one September tweet‚ referencing Tennessee’s laws protecting children. Like many other liberal and left-wing organizations‚ the ACLU refers to transgender surgeries‚ hormones‚ and puberty blockers as “gender-affirming care.” The ACLU did not respond to requests for comment from The Daily Signal. The organization does not appear to have weighed in on the matter through news releases or social media. GLAAD‚ formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation‚ has similarly poured resources and time into promoting gender transitions and “gender-affirming care” for young people and children. In January‚ the group released a fact sheet on what it called “evidence-based health care” for people who identify as transgender‚ including youth. “Transition-related health care for transgender people and youth is supported by every major medical association and leading health authority‚” GLAAD claimed. “Efforts to ban and criminalize this care are not based in medical or scientific expertise‚ and frequently spread misinformation about what the care is.” Every major medical association supports gender-affirming care for trans youth. Gender-affirming care is safe and lifesaving. Read more from the medical experts.https://t.co/dG8lRKs7l8— GLAAD (@glaad) February 1‚ 2023 GLAAD has gone so far as to issue a mandate that reporters “have an obligation” to include their statements from health organizations that support allowing youth to access transgender surgeries‚ hormones‚ and puberty blockers‚ which GLAAD calls “safe and lifesaving.” In fact‚ GLAAD even launched an entire campaign against The New York Times for covering the much-suppressed stories of detransitioners. GLAAD called the Times’ coverage “irresponsible” and “biased‚” claiming it was dangerous for youth who identify as LGBTQ. We’ve had enough. We’ve joined over 100 organizations and leaders to demand that @nytimes stop printing inaccurate and harmful misinformation about transgender people and issues. Today we are outside of the Times building to send a clear message. https://t.co/IkQocpsG5q pic.twitter.com/bBVnFoqOjD— GLAAD (@glaad) February 15‚ 2023 GLAAD also did not respond to requests for comment from The Daily Signal for this story. As with the ACLU‚ the organization does not appear to have weighed in on the matter through news releases or social media. News of the NHS decision broke on Tuesday‚ Detrans Awareness Day‚ a day on which detransitioners share their stories of transition regret‚ warning others to avoid falling into the medical and therapeutic manipulations they experienced. Detransitioners are individuals who tried to transition to the other gender before ultimately realizing that that’s impossible. “I am in full support of what the United Kingdom is doing now‚” detransitioner Abel Garcia told The Daily Signal on Wednesday. “I agree that we need to keep children safe‚ and I’m glad to hear that children in the United Kingdom are able to live healthy lives‚ at least through the stages of human puberty—which is a human right.” Detransitioner Prisha Mosley similarly praised the news. “It’s an incredible step in the right direction‚” she told The Daily Signal. “It shows that politicians have finally been listening to what experts and detransitioners have been saying for years.” Have an opinion about this article? Tor Introduces WebTunnel Feature To Help Curb Censorship

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Censorship-resistant technologies have taken a significant leap forward as the Tor Project officially unveils WebTunnel‚ a unique bridge configuration designed to elude oppressive censorship aiming at the Tor network. Functionally‚ WebTunnel allows Tor network connections to stay hidden in open sight by appearing indistinguishable from regular HTTPS traffic‚ an essential camouflage in countries with strict internet regulations. Tor bridges serve as unlisted relays in the public Tor directory‚ enabling user connections to remain concealed‚ especially from autocratic regimes intent on internet censorship. Even though countries like China and Iran have devised methods to identify and cut off these connections‚ Tor has previously deployed obfsproxy bridges offering an additional obfuscation level. However‚ WebTunnel breaks new ground here by merging with HTTPS-encrypted web traffic‚ providing a smokescreen for Tor connections. A key feature of WebTunnel’s design is its blend-in tactic: emulating HTTPS would render it unblockable without also blocking the lion’s share of connections to web servers. By this logic‚ WebTunnel connections would also be allowed‚ thereby sidestepping censorship in networks with protocol permit lists and deny-by-default policies. This innovative means of circumventing censorship helps protect users’ online privacy in repressive regions. WebTunnel was initially tested as an integrated feature in a Tor Browser test build in December 2022 and has been available for early trial deployment by bridge operators since June 2023. Despite its widespread usage and its proven efficacy in countries like China and Russia‚ WebTunnel currently faces challenges in certain regions of Iran. The Tor Project highlights: “Our goal is to ensure that Tor works for everyone. In a world marred by geopolitical strife that imperils millions‚ the internet has emerged as an indispensable lifeline – for communication‚ documentation‚ organization‚ human rights advocacy – and builds solidarity.” The post Tor Introduces WebTunnel Feature To Help Curb Censorship appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

Pornhub Blocks Access in Texas After State-Mandated Digital ID Law

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. In response to a Texas state law mandating digital ID age verification‚ Pornhub‚ a highly trafficked adult content website‚ has ceased operations in the state as of Thursday. Visitors to the site are now met with a detailed message from Pornhub criticizing the new legal requirement. The message denounces the measure as “ineffective” and “haphazard.” The adult entertainment brand is instead advocating for digital ID responsibilities to be shifted to the creators of internet-enabled devices‚ rather than individual websites. The contentious law‚ HB 1181‚ was enacted last year by the state’s Republican-led Legislature. It obliges distributors of material “harmful to minors” to verify that their users are over 18‚ using either a government-issued ID or another reliable system based on public or private data‚ without keeping any identifying user information. The digital verification with a government-issued ID opens up issues related to having to give up privacy in order to access a website. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton‚ last month‚ initiated legal action against Pornhub’s parent company to enforce compliance with this law. He emphasized the state’s commitment to safeguarding children from pornographic content‚ threatening substantial civil penalties for non-compliance. Paxton stated‚ “Texas has a right to protect its children from the detrimental effects of pornographic content‚” adding his eagerness to “hold any company accountable that violates our age verification laws intended to prevent minors from being exposed to harmful‚ obscene material on the internet.” In November‚ the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals validated the law‚ which imposes fines up to $10‚000 daily‚ an additional $10‚000 per day for illegally retaining user data‚ and $250‚000 in cases where minors access explicit content due to these violations.
