Brooks Fears Trump, Bondi Will Take a 'Blowtorch to The Neutral Institutions of Justice'

New York Times columnist and supposed conservative half of PBS News Hour’s Friday Brooks and Capehart segment was dismayed that President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi, will supposedly help him take a “blowtorch to the neutral institutions of justice.” Host Amna Nawaz worried, “There is the point I want to ask you about with Pam Bondi, because she is known as a loyalist. The Washington Post is now reporting tonight, citing two sources close to Trump's transition, that he plans to fire the entire team behind special counsel Jack Smith, who brought two federal prosecutions against him, and then use the Department of Justice to probe the 2020 election. Does having someone like Bondi in place mean he can use the DOJ like that?”     It should be noted that the Post story also says looking at 2020 is “not at the top of the list” of priorities. As for Pam Bondi, she was Attorney General of Florida for eight years, so she is not some random, inexperienced hack. Nevertheless, Brooks agreed she will do what Nawaz feared, although he never mentioned her name in a rambling response, “Yes. These are anti-institutionalists. That's the theme of the whole group of people.” Despite the fact that the question was about Bondi and that she has no scandals swirling around her, Brooks claimed Trump wants people with scandals around him, “And so many have scandals because they are outside the pale of polite society. So there are not going to be a lot of the Trump appointees like Jim Mattis, who want to be liked, who want to do a responsible job for the government. When you pick somebody who has a sex scandal or a financial scandal, they are totally on your side, because they have no other route to a career in their lives.” Brooks continued, “So, they are going to be total Trump loyalists. And their mission is to disrupt the institutions. Now, some of the — I happen to think a lot of our institutions need some disrupting. We have got a lot of, like, why can't we make — why can't we build subways in this country? Why can't we build fighter planes in this country?” He then worried Trump is going too far, “A lot of these institutions have gone creaky. And so they need reform, but they don't need a blowtorch. And especially in the attorney general's office, what we're talking about is not reforming the Justice Department. That's not cleaning out the bureaucracy. That's taking a blowtorch to the neutral institutions of justice.” Some people might argue Jack Smith was a blowtorch to the neutral institutions of justice. As for Washington Post associate editor Jonathan Capehart, he would later echo Brooks when talking about Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, “These folks aren't just about disruption. They're about destruction. And that's what I'm most worried about, that the blowtorch that David is hopeful won't happen, I think that they're off to the sideline flicking the match, trying to get the blowtorch to work in time for them to take their places in the administration once he's inaugurated on January 20.” Here is a transcript for the November 22 show: PBS News Hour 11/22/2024 7:40 PM ET AMNA NAWAZ: Well, there is the point I want to ask you about with Pam Bondi, because she is known as a loyalist. The Washington Post is now reporting tonight, citing two sources close to Trump's transition, that he plans to fire the entire team behind special counsel Jack Smith, who brought two federal prosecutions against him, and then use the Department of Justice to probe the 2020 election. Does having someone like Bondi in place mean he can use the DOJ like that? DAVID BROOKS: Yes. These are anti-institutionalists. That's the theme of the whole group of people. And so many have scandals because they are outside the pale of polite society. So there are not going to be a lot of the Trump appointees like Jim Mattis, who want to be liked, who want to do a responsible job for the government. When you pick somebody who has a sex scandal or a financial scandal, they are totally on your side, because they have no other route to a career in their lives. So, they are going to be total Trump loyalists. And their mission is to disrupt the institutions. Now, some of the — I happen to think a lot of our institutions need some disrupting. We have got a lot of, like, why can't we make — why can't we build subways in this country? Why can't we build fighter planes in this country? A lot of these institutions have gone creaky. And so they need reform, but they don't need a blowtorch. And especially in the attorney general's office, what we're talking about is not reforming the Justice Department. That's not cleaning out the bureaucracy. That's taking a blowtorch to the neutral institutions of justice. NAWAZ: Well, Jonathan, back on the Trump transition here, because there's still a lot of questions around the nominee for Secretary of Defense. That is Pete Hegseth, some questions about allegations of sexual assault and some troubling details that came out in a recently released police report related to that. We saw a number of senators voice concerns over Gaetz and the allegations that he was facing. Do you expect those senators to stand up and voice the same concerns about Hegseth? JONATHAN CAPEHART: Yes, I expect them to do that. Do I actually think they will do that? I'm not sure. I haven't heard much from the senators when it comes to the nomination of Hegseth in the way that we saw with former Congressman Gaetz. And to just jump on something that David was saying, you know, I'm all for disrupting the bureaucracy and disrupting sleepy agencies. But with all of these — with most of these appointments that we have seen, these folks aren't just about disruption. They're about destruction. And that's what I'm most worried about, that the blowtorch that David is hopeful won't happen, I think that they're off to the sideline flicking the match, trying to get the blowtorch to work in time for them to take their places in the administration once he's inaugurated on January 20.

5 iPhone 16 Plus features I started missing as soon as I returned it

After nearly two months with the iPhone 16 Plus, I returned it and downgraded to my two-year-old iPhone 14 Pro. The latter was patiently waiting in a drawer for its time to shine again. After I explained why I gave up the iPhone 16 Plus and chose to move back to a 2022 flagship, I'll now tell you why I started missing the large phone the minute I gave it up. You see, the iPhone 16 Plus has a few key features that make it an incredible device, and it has nothing to do with its signature tricks, the Camera Control button, and Apple Intelligence. Shocking 2,000-Year-Old Fig Find Opens New Chapter in Ireland’s History

A recent discovery at the Drumanagh promontory fort in North Dublin is reshaping our understanding of Ireland’s Iron Age trade networks. The find—a 2,000-year-old charred fig—is the earliest evidence of exotic fruits in Ireland, suggesting links to the Roman Empire. The fruit, along with other goods, indicates the island’s participation in international trade and its early taste for luxury. Drumanagh: Ireland’s Iron Age Trade Hub The Drumanagh promontory fort, a 46-acre site on the windswept cliffs of County Dublin, has long been considered an important Iron Age trading hub. Excavations led by Christine Baker, Fingal County Council’s Heritage Officer, have uncovered extensive evidence of trade and domestic life, including Roman metal and ceramic objects from Spain, Gaul, and Britain, notes the University College Dublin release. The fort’s strategic coastal location allowed it to serve as a gateway for goods and cultural exchange. Among the findings are remains of spelt wheat, olive oil, and other goods rarely seen in prehistoric Ireland. This suggests that the site wasn’t merely receiving Roman goods but had adopted aspects of Roman culinary and material culture. No Bake Gingerbread Cheesecake

No Bake Gingerbread Cheesecake

No Bake Gingerbread Cheesecake is a fun, festive Christmastime dessert featuring warm winter flavors, a sweet crust, and a creamy, no-bake cheesecake filling! A HOLIDAY NO BAKE DESSERT RECIPE When Christmastime rolls in, I love baking festive desserts, like this No Bake Gingerbread Cheesecake. It’s everything you love about a creamy, traditional cheesecake, but without all the fuss and hassle. I love the warm, comforting flavors of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, with the creamy, smooth texture of the cheesecake set inside of the sweet graham cracker crumb pie crust. Plus, if baking isn’t really your strong suit, a no bake dessert like this is perfect! Also, this is not a super heavy or rich dessert so I think it’s a really nice ending for some of those heavier meals! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:  Can I use a different pie crust? Certainly. You can use a different flavored crust that you prefer. Adjust the recipe as necessary. Additionally, you could add some chopped pecans or walnuts to the graham cracker crumbs crust for a nuttier flavor and texture. You an even just use a store-bought graham cracker crust. Just keep in mind, we’re using cinnamon graham crackers here to give another layer of flavor and as far as I know, you can’t currently purchase a pre-made cinnamon graham cracker crust in most grocery stores. What if I can’t find Gingerbread Spice? Don’t panic. It’s not always available at certain grocery stores. You can just make your own with these ingredients:½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground cloves ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon allspice ½ black pepper Or, you can buy some online. I like this one from King Arthur (not a paid affiliate link). What’s the best way to make cinnamon graham cracker crumbs for the crust? I find it easiest to crush the crackers in a food processor. But if you don’t have one, you can add them to a Ziploc bag and then use a rolling pin (or other heavy object) to crush the crackers. What kind of pan is best to use to make this no bake cheesecake? I prefer to make this in a springform pan as I find it’s the easiest to work with. But you could try a pie pan or round pan. It may just be a bit harder to slice and remove from the pan. How do I store leftover Gingerbread Cheesecake? Any leftover cheesecake should be covered tightly or placed in an airtight container to be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can freeze this cheesecake for up to 3 months. When planning to serve, let it thaw in the refrigerator the night before before serving. INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE) cinnamon graham cracker crumbs– using the cinnamon graham crackers is preferred over just the plain ones. The extra cinnamon really adds to this cheesecake recipe. But, if you’re in a pinch, regular graham crackers could be used. salted butter – you really need real butter here and not margarine. It won’t set up properly with margarine. granulated sugar – a sugar substitute can be used like Splenda for baking where it is a 1:1 substitute. cream cheese– softened to room temperature. I have some tips if you need to Soften Cream Cheese Quickly. sour cream  – plain Greek yogurt can be used instead. You don’t taste the sour cream in this, it just adds to the creaminess. molasses– change up the flavor profile a bit by using maple syrup or honey instead of molasses. The molasses is really what gives this that warm gingerbread flavor along with the spices. vanilla extract  gingerbread spice – if you can’t find this, you can make your own with the ingredients I shared above in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) section. If you still don’t have what you need, you could try pumpkin pie spice, but that’s not going to replicate what you would get by using gingerbread spice. It’s a very particular flavor and it’s really best if you just use the actual spice or make your own blend. It’s not like apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice where you can easily swap things out and get similar flavors. Cool Whip whipped topping – you do not need to use the name brand, Cool Whip. The store brand works just fine. Just remember it comes frozen so you will need to let it thaw in the refrigerator before using. Do not sit it out on the counter to thaw for food safety. HOW TO MAKE NO BAKE GINGERBREAD CHEESECAKE: In a mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar, mixing thoroughly until the mixture is evenly blended. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan, lightly coat the pan with nonstick spray before hand if your pan isn’t non-stick. Place it in the refrigerator to chill for one hour. Pour heavy cream into a mixing bowl and beat it until stiff peaks form. Set aside until ready to use. In another bowl, beat the cream cheese and sour cream together using an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Next, add in the sugar, molasses, vanilla and spices to the smooth and creamy cream cheese mixture. Mix until well combined. Use a rubber spatula to fold in the Cool Whip (or other whipped topping). Carefully remove the crust from the fridge and use a spoon to transfer the creamy filling into the chilled crust. Use the back of a spoon to help spread the mixture out evenly. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 8 hours, ideally overnight if you can. When ready to serve, remove from refrigerator, garnish with dollops of whipped cream and optional cookie pieces. Slice and serve.  CRAVING MORE RECIPES?  No Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake No Bake Caramel Apple Cheesecake Gingerbread Cupcakes Soft Gingerbread Cookies Gingerbread Loaf – Starbucks Copycat No Bake Cheesecake Print No Bake Gingerbread Cheesecake No Bake Gingerbread Cheesecake is a fun, festive Christmastime dessert featuring warm winter flavors, a sweet crust, and a creamy, no-bake cheesecake filling!
