10 Most Underrated Eagles Songs

Writing our article on the 10 Most Underrated Eagles Songs was not an easy task because the band has a relatively small catalog, and most Eagles fans are very familiar with nearly all of the songs the band has released. This is especially true for their classic albums, though it may not be the case for The Long Road Out of Eden album, which we touch on later in the article. For the casual Eagles fan who may have only purchased the greatest hits records, or for the general public, there are definitely many Eagles songs that deserve more attention. Hugh Grant Is Having a Grand Old Creepy Time in the Trailer for Heretic

News Heretic Hugh Grant Is Having a Grand Old Creepy Time in the Trailer for Heretic What’s behind door #2? By Molly Templeton | Published on June 25, 2024 Screenshot: A24 Comment 0 Share New Share Screenshot: A24 Hugh Grant has been warming up to his villain era for years, as anyone who loved Paddington 2 or Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves can tell you. But now he’s going all in—maybe. In Heretic, Grant plays Mr. Reed, who welcomes into his blueberry-pie-scented home two young missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East). They can’t come in without another woman present, but they are very quick to take Mr. Reed at his word when he says his wife is home and has a pie in the oven. He’s got something in the oven, all right, but it’s less a pie and more a diabolical scheme to mess with the missionaries’ minds. This trailer is cleverly quite vague about what exactly Mr. Reed’s plan is, other than that it seems to have been very planned out and involve a house that is, well, bigger on the inside. (Maybe?) There’s a certain enjoyable untrustworthiness to the whole setup. I’m still hoping that Mr. Reed gives his visitors a nice theology lecture before he makes them pick between doors number one (belief) and two (disbelief). Heretic, the latest horror film from A24 (Maxxxine), is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the writers of A Quiet Place and the writer-directors of the Adam Driver dinosaur movie 65. Sophie Thatcher is best known for Yellowjackets, but also led a cool space scooter gang in The Book of Boba Fett. Chloe East was in Meet the Fabelmans and starred in the Max series Generation. Heretic is in theaters November 15th. I expect Mr. Reed’s blueberry pie candle will be for sale on A24’s website around the same time.[end-mark] The post Hugh Grant Is Having a Grand Old Creepy Time in the Trailer for Heretic appeared first on Reactor.

What Padan Fain Owes to Gollum, and What Rand al’Thor Might Learn From Him

Books The Wheel of Time What Padan Fain Owes to Gollum, and What Rand al’Thor Might Learn From Him Sylas Barret takes an in-depth look at Padan Fain, Rand/Lews, Luc/Isamand… Gollum. By Sylas K Barrett | Published on June 25, 2024 Credit: Jan Thijs Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: Jan Thijs Like many epic fantasy stories, The Wheel of Time is full of references and homages to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. This is particularly true, and particularly noticeable, in the first book of the series, The Eye of the World. A magical stranger arrives at an idyllic farming community that has always sheltered from the rest of the world’s troubles, just in time for Dark creatures in black robes to show up looking for someone, forcing our young protagonists to flee in order to protect their home. There is a flight to a ferry. A sad swordsman who is really a dispossessed king. A trip into a once-great kingdom that is now full of shadowy monsters that no one really understands. The list goes on, as Jordan was quite successful in referencing and reimagining quite a few characters and plot moments from Tolkien’s work. But my favorite, and I think the most impressive, is Padan Fain—the Gollum of The Wheel of Time. Like Gollum/Sméagol, the character of Padan Fain takes on a second personality in the form of the shadowy Mordeth, laying a foundation for Jordan to explore the concept of two minds in one body, not only with Mordeth-Fain but also with Luc-Isam and, of course, with Rand himself. Just as Sméagol was a normal, hobbit-esque guy before he encountered the One Ring, Padan Fain begins the story as an ordinary peddler, an unimportant person by most metrics, though well-liked by the people of the Two Rivers. Sméagol’s corruption came to him by chance, while Fain intentionally swore himself to the Dark, but he could never have guessed that he would be made one of the Dark One’s hounds, taken to Shayol Ghul, and altered for the purpose of seeking out the Dragon Reborn. Once he has searched enough of the land, Fain is brought back to Shayol Ghul to have his mind “distilled” for information. This is reminiscent of Gollum being tortured in Mordor for the information that leads the Nazgûl to search for “Baggins” and “the Shire.” Fain blames Rand for his suffering, and just as Gollum is drawn to follow Frodo while he carries the ring, Fain is a slave to impulses that exist outside of himself, tormented by dark dreams and thoughts of Rand that were put there by the Dark One but ultimately take on a life of their own, defining Fain just as Gollum’s hunger to reclaim the One Ring defines him. Gollum isn’t the only Tolkien character Jordan draws from for Fain, however. When Mordeth-Fain becomes Ordeith, Mordeth’s corrupting influence affects those around him in a way that is very reminiscent of Grima Wormtongue’s influence over Théoden in The Two Towers, as it makes people cruel and bitter and suspicious, while also sapping their will and making them susceptible to Mordeth-Fain’s suggestions and control. The name Ordeith, which means “wormwood” in the Old Tongue, may be a nod to this fact. And of course the gholam owes some of its genesis to Gollum as well, whose name also probably comes from the same root. Like Gollum, the gholam is slippery and stronger than it looks, can hide in shadows and tight spaces, and has become fixated on an opponent that defeated it through trickery and possession of a magical object. Still, Fain’s story, and his role in the narrative, draws much from Gollum. It is more complex, in many ways, than Gollum’s, as Jordan explores different themes with the character-type than Tolkien did. Sméagol/Gollum is ultimately one person fractured into separate personalities, the latter of which develops from his isolation and from the corruption of the Ring; part of his story is about whether the part of him that is Sméagol can be unearthed from under the part that is Gollum. Fain, on the other hand, is possessed by an outside entity and one that is unrelated to the original Darkness by which he was corrupted. For some reason—most likely whatever supernatural changes the Dark One made to Fain to turn him into his hound—Mordeth was unable to take Fain over completely when he tried to possess him, and the two seem to have melded into one personality. Where Sméagol is one personality, become two, Mordeth-Fain is two personalities, become one. It’s a little unclear whether Mordeth is the soul of a man long-dead or merely the consciousness of him, imprinted long after the person himself died. It is also possible that he is something in between: Just as Fain was altered by the touch of the Dark One, Mordeth may have been altered by the powers that destroyed Aridhol and gave birth to Mashadar. The question of whether they are two souls in one body or two consciousnesses in one body—or some mixture of the two—is therefore impossible to determine exactly, at least as of the end of Winter’s Heart. However, we do have a fairly decent idea of how Mordeth-Fain understands who and what he is, including some sections that are from his point-of-view. At one point in Chapter 31 of The Shadow Rising, Mordeth thinks about the fact that he is no longer a puppet for the Dark One, and that he cannot be stopped or killed by either Shadowspawn or Forsaken. “Nothing can kill me,” he muttered, scowling. “Not me. I have survived since the Trolloc Wars.” Well, a part of him had. He laughed shrilly, hearing madness in the cackle, knowing it, not caring. In that same chapter we also learn that he sometimes calls himself Ordeith in his own mind and always refers to himself with singular pronouns; he never uses “we” as Gollum does when talking to himself/Sméagol. The above passage shows that Mordeth-Fain has some awareness of the fact that there are, or at least were, separate parts of him. These lines do seem blurred, however, and he doesn’t usually feel the need to distinguish those parts. In the same chapter, Fain thinks about how the White Tower has stolen his dagger, but he doesn’t consider that the dagger only belongs to part of himself, just as he doesn’t seem to distinguish the idea that his desire to hunt down Rand only comes from part of himself. The history of the parts matters, in a way, but in his current desires and experiences, he seems to think of himself as one. Then again, we have also seen Fain talking to himself as though speaking to that other part. When he confronts Rand in chapter 33 of Winter’s Heart, he is able to create an illusion of Torval and Gedwyn coming up the stairs. Though the illusion is not explained, it must certainly be an ability that comes from Mordeth, and in the moment before the trick is used, it almost seems as though Mordeth makes the suggestion to Fain, causing a short debate. “I want him to know who is killing him,” Fain whined petulantly. He was glaring straight at Rand, but he seemed to be talking to himself. “I want him to know! But if he’s dead, then he will stop haunting my dreams. Yes. He will stop, then.” With a smile, he raised his free hand. But the muddle of Mordeth-Fain is not the only example of two minds inhabiting one body. Rand himself has another consciousness in his head with him—that of Lews Therin. Lews Therin is a different person from Rand, but not at all in the way that Mordeth is a different person than Fain, because Lews Therin is a former personality of the soul that is Rand al’Thor. In some ways, therefore, one can’t consider Lews Therin to be an outsider invading Rand, the way Mordeth invaded Fain. When it began, of course, Rand wondered if Lews Therin was actually real or merely madness, something his mind was imagining as it succumbed to the effects of the taint. But whether or not the taint is in some way responsible for this bleed-through across time, it is clear now that Lews Therin’s consciousness is “real,” that it is an actual presence in Rand’s head and not his own mind hallucinations. Both Rand and Lews Therin are aware that they are separate minds, although Lews Therin often believes that Rand is in his body, rather than the other way around. Generally they both maintain this sense of self, even up to the point where Lews Therin will try to urge Rand to do things, or argue with him about his choices, or even attempt to take control of saidin from him. However, there is bleed-through from Lews Therin to Rand: Rand has memories about the Forsaken, of various weaves of the One Power, and is even beginning to pick up other of Lews Therin’s skills, such as the ability to draw. So far he appears to be aware of the fact that these memories and skills come from Lews Therin, not himself—at least for the most part. Rand’s guilt over the death of women and his drive to take responsibility for every one that is even vaguely adjacent to him, regardless of how much it is actually his fault, and regardless of that woman’s own choices and agency, is certainly driven by Lews Therin’s guilt over murdering Ilyena. And if Rand cannot see this, what other bits of Lews Therin might be sliding into him without his awareness? And how much worse might it get? The removal of the taint on saidin might help, but Lews Therin is already in Rand’s mind, and I don’t think he’s going away even if his presence was originally caused by the Dark One’s corruption. Rand and Fain aren’t the only members of the two-conciousnesses-in-one-body club, either. Slayer—also known as Rand’s Uncle Luc, also known as Isam, who is probably a Malkieri and possibly related to Lan, so that’s fun—belongs to this group as well. Luc-Isam is mentioned in the Dark prophecy that was found in the dungeons of Fal Dara in Chapter 7 of The Great Hunt, which so far (again, as of the end of Winter’s Heart) is our best explanation of what Luc-Isam’s deal is: Luc came to the Mountains of Dhoom.Isam waited in the high passes. The hunt is now begun. The Shadow’s hounds now course, and kill. One did live, and one did die, but both are. This seems to suggest that Luc encountered Isam somewhere in the Mountains of Dhoom when he went into the Blight (as urged by Gitara), and through some strange occurrence, both their souls came to inhabit one body. At this point in my read I can only speculate how this came about, but there are a few clues in the prophecy. Shayol-Ghul is in the Mountains of Dhoom, and we know that the Dark One’s touch is stronger there, strong enough to exert his reality-altering powers on this part of the Pattern. It is where the ritual to imprison someone’s soul in coeur s’ouvre can be enacted, and nearby is where the Myrddraal swords are forged, a process which also involves human souls. It’s not hard to imagine that there are other ways souls might be corrupted, or mixed up, or placed into bodies not their own. Indeed, the Dark One does steal the bodies of the living to reincarnate the souls of his followers. So far we have only seen him do so with the Chosen, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t, or wouldn’t, do it for other servants that were useful to him. Perhaps Isam is the one who died and was either placed in Luc’s body or attempted to possess him in some way, but for some reason it didn’t go to plan, just as Mordeth’s possession of Fain’s did not. If we count the poetic structure as relevant, it would suggest that Luc lived and Isam died, and so far the body has looked like Luc whenever it is in the waking world, and only looked like Isam in Tel’aran’rhiod, further fitting this theory. Luc-Isam is also working for one of the Chosen, and it is suggested in chapter 22 of Winter’s Heart that at one point he was only ever commanded by the the Dark One himself—and perhaps Isam was the same, before he was joined with Luc. All this speculation aside, what seems clear is that Luc and Isam are two souls in one body. This is different from Rand, who is one soul with two consciousnesses. It is different than Mordeth-Fain as well, because while those two are all jumbled up, Luc and Isam seem to remain completely separate, taking turns controlling the body. Most interestingly, they seem to enjoy each other’s company and revel in each other’s memories of violence. Three different people with three different permutations of having two-consciousness per body. Mordeth and Padan Fain have melded into each other until they don’t draw many distinctions between which part is which. Luc and Isam like the same things—hunting and violence—and share the body apparently without strife. And Rand and Lews Therin fight for control, each trying to suppress each other. It’s interesting that the bad guys have a much easier time getting along than the good guys. Of course, the fact that Lews Therin is suffering from the madness he was tainted by before his death doesn’t help. Rand is desperately trying to hold onto his sanity, but Fain doesn’t care if he’s insane, and Luc and Isam seem horrifically evil but otherwise rational. Still, I find myself wondering what Rand might be able to learn from his enemies about the balancing act of sharing your mind with another consciousness. With the taint gone from saidin, Rand might find that the madness lifts from him, and even from Lews Therin. How might his relationship with this former personality of his soul change if he could trust Lews Therin’s reason? After all, even mad and wishing to die, Lews Therin has still been more of a help to Rand than a hindrance, preparing him for confrontations with the Chosen and giving him knowledge of channeling Rand desperately needs. If they were to learn to work together, they might be able to achieve some impressive things. Mordeth-Fain has, and Luc-Isam appears to be stronger as two than as one, as well. In The Lord of the Rings, the being called Sméagol is corrupted and changed by his time possessing the One Ring, so much so that that corruption takes on its own consciousness in Gollum. Gollum is a creature of Evil, and he is both useful to Sauron and a threat to him. But ultimately, Gollum’s desire for the Ring, a desire that is given by the Ring and the evil of Sauron, is the final piece that leads to Sauron’s destruction. This is also true of Mordeth-Fain. His ceaseless hunger for Rand is what leads him to give Rand that second unhealing wound, which in turn gives Rand the knowledge he needs to remove the taint from saidin, and to destroy Shadar Logoth in the same moment. This may or may not matter to the Mordeth side—neither of Rand’s wounds gets any better, which suggests that Mordeth’s own powers and the power of the dagger remain untouched by Shadow Logoth’s destruction. However, it is an enormous blow to the Dark One, and one could argue that without its removal, the Light was almost certainly doomed to be defeated in the Last Battle. In his hatred for and obsession with Rand, Mordeth-Fain gave Rand an incredible gift. Instead of destroying him with corrupting power, he set him free from an even larger corrupting influence. What other lessons might he accidentally teach Rand before the end? What other uses might fate have for him, or for Slayer, or both of them before the end and the final confrontation between Rand and the Dark One? Time, and five more books, will give me the answers to these questions, but in the meantime, I remain impressed by Jordan’s ability to take the Gollum concept and run with it, in many different directions, creating new themes and new types of character from a foundation epic fantasy fans know so well. 63 Companies Supporting LGBTQ Consumers During Pride Month

After transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney endorsed Bud Light last April, the beer brand lost about 25% of its sales in subsequent weeks. Bud Light’s website currently includes no sign of celebrating LGBTQ consumers. This “Pride Month,” however, as the list below reveals, many companies continued to signal support for and seek the business of LGBTQ individuals by advertising Pride-themed merchandise on their websites. Others discreetly showed their support by not featuring “Pride”-related products on homepages, but tucking away statements of support elsewhere on their websites. Nine companies on this list of 63 said they donate a share of proceeds to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit specializing in suicide prevention for youth who identify as LGBTQ. And although this article focuses on private-sector companies that celebrate Pride Month, public-sector examples abound. NASA, for instance, a U.S. government agency, expressed its support for LGBTQ individuals in a June 1 post on X, stating: “There’s space for everyone—all genders and orientations—in exploration and discovery.” Here are 63 companies that touted their participation in Pride Month this year. Abercrombie & Fitch: The specialty clothing retailer say it’s donating $400,000 to The Trevor Project and releasing a “Made With Pride” collection. The clothing line includes 30 “gender-inclusive garments designed for summer festival and event outfitting.” Adidas: The German sportswear company co-created a “Pride” collection with Brazilian artist Pabllo Vittar. Airbnb: The rental company shared the top “Pride” celebrations in America attended by Gen Z and millennials this year, based on booked rentals. The cities of Cleveland and Charlotte, North Carolina, are identified as “emerging hotspots.” Amazon: From Pride flags to knee-high rainbow socks to plastic party necklaces in rainbow colors, Amazon’s The Everything Store markets related merchandise. American Eagle: The parent company of Aerie, Unsubscribed, and Todd Snyder offers “The Pride Shop” on its website, featuring clothing designed with rainbows and T-shirts emblazoned with sayings such as “Ally,” “Queer,” and “Pride Is Every Single Day of the Year.” Apple: Like last year, the leading tech company has designed Pride-themed Apple Watch bands and “wallpaper” for other Apple devices. Bank of America: On its website, the bank promotes a “Pride Ally” network that provides LGBTQ employees with “domestic partner benefits.” Ben & Jerry’s: The multinational ice cream brand expresses support for the LGBTQ agenda in a website section called “Issues We Care About.” It briefly recounts the recent history of LGBTQ rights in the U.S. and urges consumers to take action. Betty Crocker: The food and recipe brand continues to feature Pride-inspired dessert recipes on its website. BMW: The German luxury automobile company’s Group Pride Network works to support LGBTQ individuals. Build a Bear: The customizable teddy bear company highlights Pride-themed stuffed animals on its website, including rainbow-colored stuffed animals, Pride flag accessories, and rainbow outfits for the stuffed animals. Calvin Klein: The U.S. fashion house featured model Cara Delevingne, actor-singer Jeremy Pope, and others in a sexualized video announcing its “This Is Love” campaign for Pride Month. Chipotle: The international food chain brought back its “Love What Makes You Real” campaign, which includes employee uniforms that “highlight allyship and acceptance.” Chipotle employees will continue marching in Pride parades in the U.S. and Canada. Coke: The Coca-Cola Co.’s website states that it supports Pride parades, advertises its products with rainbow-themed billboards, and backs LGBTQ organizations such as The Trevor Project. Converse: Converse employees who say they are LGBTQ, and their allies, created the concept for a “Proud to Be” collection that showcases “Western-inspired apparel and shoes that recognize the trailblazing spirit of the queer community.” CVS: The retail pharmacy chain features “LGBTQ+ owned or founded brands” on its website. DC Comics: Just before Pride Month, the comic book publisher released an annual anthology that contains fan favorites among LGBTQ-themed stories. DC Comics, home of superheroes such as Batman and Superman, also created Pride merchandise for this year’s celebration. Walt Disney Co.: A “Pride Collection” of movies and TV shows is featured on the streaming service Disney+. The company’s amusement parks offer Pride merch and “photo experiences” for a limited time. FedEx: The website of the transportation and e-commerce company includes a section stating FedEx’s support of the LGBTQ movement and noting that it’s been a donor to LGBTQ organizations such as The Trevor Project since 2017. General Motors: The automaker’s website features a compilation video showcasing Pride flags flown at various GM facilities. GM also states its commitment to the LGBTQ movement. Google: Google says it is boosting LGBTQ-themed TV shows and providing live coverage of Pride parades. Hershey: The confectionary company encourages employees to celebrate Pride Month throughout the Harrisburg and Philadelphia areas this summer. H&M: The Sweden-based fast-fashion clothing company says on its website that it is participating in Pride marches in New York City and Los Angeles. H&M says it also supports The Trevor Project. Hollister: The Abercrombie & Fitch-owned retail company released a 2024 pride collection which includes “six gender-neutral pieces.” J.Crew: The specialty retailer says it “proudly partnered” with PFLAG, an organization that supports LGBTQ individuals and their loved ones, to create a Pride-themed T-shirt. Kate Spade New York: The fashion company released a Pride collection that features rainbow-colored bags, bandanas, jewelry, and phone cases. Kay Jewelers: A section on its website, “Kiss With Pride,” showcases engagement and wedding rings with photos of gay couples. Congresswoman’s Amendment Bars Pentagon Funding of Abortion

A Republican congresswoman from Texas succeeded in amending the annual National Defense Authorization Act to prevent the Pentagon from subsidizing abortions with taxpayer dollars. Rep. Beth Van Duyne’s amendment to the $883.7 billion fiscal 2025 NDAA would block President Joe Biden’s Defense Department from using federal funds to reimburse abortion-related expenses. The amendment passed the House of Representatives on June 13 on a 214-to-207 vote. Two Republicans voted against the pro-life amendment (Reps. John Duarte of California and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania) and one Democrat voted in favor of it (Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas). The overall bill passed the House on June 14, also on a largely party-line 217-199 vote, with six Democrats voting in favor and three Republicans opposing it, the Hill reported. Van Duyne told The Daily Signal her amendment would roll back Biden’s illegal Department of Defense abortion travel reimbursement policy issued in a memo on Oct. 20, 2022, which she said was “in clear violation of historic, bipartisan norms and current law.” Listen to “The Daily Signal Podcast” interview with Van Duyne here: The post Congresswoman’s Amendment Bars Pentagon Funding of Abortion appeared first on The Daily Signal.

China's lunar probe has successfully returned the first ever samples taken from the far side of the Moon to Earth. On June 1, Chang'e 6 touched down softly near the Lunar South Pole. This was the second time China achieved this feat, and they remain the only nation to have done so. IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites. While there, the lander delivered a payload for the European Space Agency (ESA): a negative ion detector, which has already detected negative ions as they're kicked up as secondary particles from the lunar surface."These observations on the Moon will help us better understand the surface environment and act as a pathfinder to explore negative ion populations in other airless bodies in the Solar System," Negative Ions at the Lunar Surface principal investigator Martin Wieser said in a statement, "from planets to asteroids and other moons."But the main purpose of the mission is to return the first samples from the far side of the Moon, and that's what the China National Space Administration (CNSA) achieved on Tuesday, landing in the Inner Mongolia desert. The Moon is tidally locked to Earth, meaning that its rotation speed around its own axis matches the time it takes to orbit around the Earth. This is true of most planet-Moon systems where the planet is much larger than the Moon in question and close enough to it, as the smaller body's rotation speed is altered as it orbits the planet with much more mass until they are in sync.Often referred to as the "dark side" of the Moon, the far side actually receives about the same amount of sunlight. But there are notable differences between the two sides, which we realized after the onset of space travel. IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.Though heavily cratered, the far side of the Moon does not have the deep basins and "lunar seas" seen on the near side, and its crust was measured to be thicker by the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory mission in 2012. It also, weirdly, appears to be more conductive. There are a number of theories as to why the sides should be so different, including that there were originally two Moons orbiting Earth which collided early in the Earth's history, and that a dwarf planet collided with a smaller Earth moon later on. Zongyu Yue, a geologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Chinese media outlet the South China Morning Post that the samples are hoped to answer “one of the most fundamental questions in lunar research – what geologic activity is responsible for the differences between the two sides [of the Moon]."Though the far side of the Moon has been studied from orbit, there is nothing like getting your hands on samples. Hopefully, they will answer questions about how the Moon formed, while scientists also hope that the samples could contain water, oxygen, and hydrogen, which could be harvested during further exploration.

Puzzlingly Young Stars Are Swarming Around Our Galaxy's Black Hole

Two studies have taken a closer look at the mysterious stars surrounding our galaxy's black hole, confirming that they are a lot younger than we expected, are highly organized, and are possibly "immortal" thanks to being continuously replenished by dark matter.About 30 years ago, astronomers discovered stars moving around Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.These stars – designated S stars – zip around the supermassive black hole at incredible velocities. Any object that falls into the black hole becomes invisible to us, as not even light can escape the immense gravity that made the star (or perhaps cloud of interstellar dust) collapse in the first place."Its vicinity, however, contains a fairly high density of stars [...], including one big star – about 15 times the mass of the Sun and seven times its radius – which was recently found to go around the center with an orbital period of only 15.2 years," NASA explains of one of these objects. "That star, designated S2 by astronomers, follows an ellipse which at its closest comes within about 124 astronomical units (1 AU=mean Sun-Earth distance) of the center of the galaxy [...]. At that time it speeds up to about 5,000 [kilometers per second; 3,100 miles per second] – close to 2 percent of the velocity of light."What is particularly puzzling about these stars is that they appear younger than we would expect. In a new study, researchers from Europe looked at a dozen young stellar objects (YSOs) discovered in the region of the black hole, finding a further puzzle.“Interestingly, these YSOs exhibit the same behaviour as S stars. This means that the YSOs circumnavigate the supermassive black hole with speeds of several thousand kilometres per second in a few years,” Dr Florian Peißker from the University of Cologne’s Institute for Astrophysics and corresponding author of the study explained in a statement. “The S stars were found to be surprisingly young. According to conventional theories, the additional presence of a stellar kindergarten composed of YSOs is completely unexpected."Though these objects appear like a chaotic swarm of bees, studying their orbit the team found patterns and formations to it.“This means that there are specific preferred star constellations," Peißker added. "The distribution of both star variations resembles a disc which gives the impression that the supermassive black hole forces the stars to assume an organized orbit."Though more observations need to be made, the team proposes a few explanations."The pattern of the dusty sources manifested in the distribution of the position angles, inclinations, and longitudes of the ascending node strongly suggests two different scenarios: the main-sequence stars and the dusty stellar S-cluster sources share a common formation history or migrated with a similar formation channel in the vicinity of Sgr A*," the team wrote in their paper. "Alternatively, the gravitational influence of Sgr A* in combination with a massive perturber, such as a putative intermediate mass black hole in the IRS 13 cluster, forces the dusty objects and S-stars to follow a particular orbital arrangement."In a second paper, aimed at explaining why S stars appear to be so young, another team proposes that they can become "immortal" as they move through dark matter and capture it, and are then powered by dark matter collisions."The dark matter density in these stars continuously replenishes, granting these stars immortality and solving multiple stellar anomalies," the authors write in their not yet peer-reviewed paper. "Upcoming telescopes could detect the dark main sequence, offering a new dark matter discovery avenue."The first paper is published in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The second paper is posted on preprint server arXiv.
