Instead Of Preserving The Dead‚ Formaldehyde On Mars Could Have Started Life

A path has been sketched for how molecules needed for life could have formed on Mars in the days when it was wet. We don’t know if this happened‚ or that it led to life‚ let alone whether any survived. Nevertheless‚ the work suggests that anyone thinking of giving up on the prospects of a living neighbor should hold onto hope a little longer. The presence of liquid water is considered the single most important condition for life to exist‚ and we know Mars had that for at least 200 million years. Organic compounds that can serve as the building blocks for RNA or something similar are also essential. Some of these have been found in meteorites‚ which hit Mars even more frequently than Earth‚ but we don’t currently know if this source could supply all that were needed‚ and if not whether Mars itself could have supplied them. This is where new work by Shungo Koyama of Tohoku University and colleagues on the role of formaldehyde comes in. Best known as chemical used to preserve dead specimens‚ the molecule H2CO is so important as a precursor molecule we produce millions of tons a year of it. According to this work‚ formaldehyde should have formed‚ after a few intermediary stages‚ out of carbon dioxide and water vapor. Formaldehyde is both soluble in water and reactive. Once absorbed by the Martian ocean‚ back when there was one‚ the molecule would have undergone reactions with ammonia and other simple molecules to form amino acids‚ sugars and other molecules considered “bio-important”. These include ribose‚ essential to RNA formation. The capacity of formaldehyde to transform into more complex molecules under water is already established‚ and particularly through the formose reaction. What is new in this work is the likelihood of its presence in useful quantities.Koyama and co-authors propose the Martian atmosphere at the time was rich in carbon dioxide‚ hydrogen‚ and carbon monoxide. The presence of atmospheric hydrogen is inferred from how warm Mars was relative to the amount of sunlight‚ while the CO and CO2 are anticipated to have come from volcanoes‚ whose remains can still be seen. Allowing for the effects of sunlight‚ the team predict this sort of atmosphere would lead to formaldehyde production‚ which would have then rained out‚ including into the ocean. How formaldehyde could have formed in the Martian atmosphere and then turned into molecules essential for life in the ocean.Image credit: ©Shungo KoyamaThe oceans would have experienced evaporation that then fell as snow. This would have concentrated other molecules in the water left behind‚ making it easier for bio-important chemicals to find each other.“Our research provides crucial insights into the chemical processes that may have occurred on ancient Mars‚ offering valuable clues to the possibility of past life on the planet‚” Koyama said in a statement. Quite how much formaldehyde would have formed depends on the ratio of gases in the atmosphere‚ but it is likely at times it would have been substantial. The theory is all well and good‚ but more important is to find out if this happened. With decades of data from Martian landers and rovers‚ the team plan to search through records for the isotopic ratios of carbon in surviving organic molecules. These could indicate the likelihood the molecules formed via this route rather than non-atmospheric alternatives. The study is published open access in Scientific Reports.

For First Time‚ Humanity Is Taking Steps To Remove A Dead Rocket From Earth's Orbit

Space around Earth is polluted. For 70 years‚ several nations around the world have been sending stuff up‚ caring very little about what would happen after their work was done. This space junk includes massive satellites‚ rocket pieces‚ and‚ for a time‚ even a spatula and a camera. Removing this stuff is seen as crucial to keep space safe. Now a private company is attempting a first‚ important step in arriving at a solution. The mission is called Active Debris Removal by Astroscale-Japan or ADRAS-J. It was launched from New Zealand on February 18 and its mission officially began on February 22. The goal of this spacecraft is to reach and characterize a large piece of space junk that was not designed to be approached‚ is not emitting any signal‚ and is not communicating with Earth. The target of this primary objective is a defunct Japanese H-2A rocket upper stage floating somewhere in low-Earth orbit. The piece of junk is “unprepared” – that's lingo for an orbiting object that doesn’t have any visual aids that would allow detection and that has nothing that would facilitate docking. It is 11 meters in length and 4 in diameter (36 and 13 feet‚ respectively) and it weighs about 3 tons. Nothing else is known about this piece of space junk. It could have been hit by other space junk and might now be damaged and moving in an uncontrolled way. Also‚ its movement around the Earth cannot be controlled so ADRAS-J has its work cut out for it.  IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.“Rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) are fundamental for any future on-orbit servicing‚ ensuring the safe and secure approach of servicer spacecraft to client spacecraft and other objects such as space debris‚” Astroscale Japan wrote in a press statement. This first step will showcase that it is possible to find‚ approach‚ and characterize an unprepared piece of space junk. The mission will also show that ADRAS-J can then hold itself at a fixed distance from the target – the gold standard RPO. If this mission is successful‚ ADRAS-J will demonstrate that it is possible to rendezvous with any object in orbit. That would be amazing in two ways. If you could approach a piece of space junk‚ you could hopefully attach to it and then take it on a controlled trajectory through the atmosphere‚ burning it.This ability to approach any object could also be used to service satellites in orbit. The mission is ongoing and Astroscale Japan will update on the progress in due course.

How A Man Overdosed On Homeopathic Medicine After Manufacturer Error

How A Man Overdosed On Homeopathic Medicine After Manufacturer Error

There's an old joke about homeopathy‚ which goes something like this: A man overdosed on homeopathic medicine. He forgot to take his pills.Homeopaths believe (mistakenly) that substances that cause specific symptoms in healthy people can be used to treat those symptoms in unhealthy patients. According to homeopathists‚ the more the substance is diluted‚ the stronger it is‚ and the better it is at treating patients. Hence why the hypothetical man who forgot to take his pill died in the above joke – he received a stronger homeopathic dose because he had absolutely none of the active ingredient. While scientifically bunkum‚ this idea of dilution at least does one thing for the health of patients of homeopathists; it protects them from potentially deadly ingredients in their alternative medicine. Normally‚ homeopathists dilute the active ingredient down to such a minuscule amount that there is just the tiniest trace of the ingredient left. This won't do anything for you‚ other than perhaps a mild placebo effect‚ but at least you can be pretty confident that you aren't being poisoned. You're basically eating very expensive sugar‚ or drinking slightly funny-tasting water.Unfortunately‚ sometimes the vital dilution part is not done properly‚ resulting in a weaker dose from the homeopath's perspective – and occasionally overdoses of deadly ingredients from a real medical perspective. In 2021‚ one such overdose occurred when a 53-year-old male patient showed up at the emergency department with symptoms including confusion‚ drowsiness‚ dizziness‚ feelings of anxiety‚ muscle weakness‚ dry mouth‚ difficulty speaking‚ and visual impairment. These symptoms came on shortly after he took 30 drops of a homeopathic remedy containing Atropa belladonna‚ aka deadly nightshade‚ a plant that was used to make poison arrows by Ancient Romans.Investigating the cause of his symptoms‚ his doctors discovered that the manufacturer had inadvertently placed a whole lot more belladonna than they should have."We were able to determine the atropine concentration in the homeopathic mixture as approximately 3 mg/mL instead of the declared 0.005 mg/mL which resulted in a 600-fold overdose‚" the doctors write in their report.Fortunately‚ the patient recovered over the next 12 hours without medical intervention. "We would like to remind clinical physicians to also enquire about alternative medications and be vigilant for the onset of symptoms related to homeopathic or holistic preparations‚" the team concluded in their case report. "When prescribing homeopathic remedies‚ it is preferable to use original preparations from established drug manufacturers."The case report is published in the journal Clinical Toxicology.

Teen Pop Star Olivia Rodrigo Donates Tour Proceeds to Abortion Funds

Teen Pop Star Olivia Rodrigo Donates Tour Proceeds to Abortion Funds

For a girl that got her period like two years ago‚ she sure has a lot to say about abortions. Singer/Songwriter Olivia Rodrigo released a graphic on her Instagram story Tuesday indicating that she partnered up with the National Network of Abortion Funds to contribute financially to moms who travel to abort their children. Ticket sale proceeds from her GUTS World Tour will go towards three different abortion funds who help women kill their babies.  It takes a lot of GUTS to come out and insist that you want to help women kill their kids but then again‚ that line of thinking is normal for leftists who have no decency or respect for innocent human life. Rodrigo took the entertainment industry by storm after gaining popularity with a role on Disney Channel that launched her career in the music industry. “Drivers License‚” is one of her top songs and it‚ as well as Rodrigo as a whole‚ has a major influence on women and girls of Generation Z. Hence why this sort of initiative is so detrimental.  “A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales at #GUTSworldtourHouston will go towards @abortionfunds @fundtexaschoice @janesdueprocess who help Texans traveling for abortions by covering &; coordinating transportation‚ lodging &; other practical support classes.” She also linked to the National Network of Abortion Funds website for donations and insisted that the money was part of “Olivia Rodrigo’s Fund 4 Good.” As an aside‚ it’s pretty ironic that the tour advocating for abortions is called GUTS. During an abortion a baby’s guts are ripped out of his mothers womb slowly. The parallels are disturbing but nonetheless‚ uncanny. Thing is‚ if Rodrigo actually cared about women‚ you’d think she’d donate the portion of the proceeds to actually helping them rather than encouraging and enabling them to kill their babies. Maybe proceeds could go to pregnancy centers or perhaps it could be donated to moms that need scholarship money to finish up school. But to go towards the brutal murder of innocent babies? Come on! .@OliviaRodrigo speaking about fund 4 good and abortion access. #GUTSWorldTour pic.twitter.com/Wc7KeB1eaY — Rodrigo Times (@RodrigoTimes) February 24‚ 2024 Following the announcement that Rodrigo would be partnering with the National Network of Abortion Funds‚ mixed reviews flooded in.  Rolling Stone indicated that the partnership “couldn’t come at a more critical time for abortion access‚” and included a note from NNAF’s executive director who said‚ “It takes guts to fund abortions at this moment.” One user insisted that it was a “bold move” for Rodrigo to announce the partnership. “I respect it so much‚” the user wrote on X. Another called her a “perfect all-American pro-choice champion.” Jezebel‚ an overtly pro-abort outlet‚ wrote that “it’s genuinely refreshing to see a huge celebrity uplifting the work of abortion funds‚” and later on in the piece said “here’s to hoping Rodrigo keeps dragging these a**holes on her tour‚” a**holes being pro-lifers of course. Speaking of pro-lifers‚ many were utterly disturbed by Rodrigo's moved.  “Why not raise funds to help single moms? Better yet raise money and awareness about condoms. Women seem to be worshiping abortion‚ same ones saying that they can be men if they feel like it‚” a user wrote on X. Our Sunday Visitor contributing editor Katie Yoder wrote “this makes me so sad” with a link to a TeenVogue article about Rodrigo’s campaign. Similarly a user insisted that the initiative was disappointing and “it makes me sick to see young women supporting the slaughter of unborn babies.” “The Preborn children killed in abortions aren’t tissue‚ choices or medical waste. They were bigger than the whole sky and robbed of the chance to be more than just a short time. Shame on you‚ @oliviarodrigo‚” one more wrote. Live Action Ambassador Mary-Logan Miske said the following in a quote to MRCTV: When we see artists like Paramore and most recently‚ Olivia Rodrigo‚ distribute their money sold from their tours‚ go towards paying for women’s abortions‚ we are left to believe Hollywood has a very clear agenda; to promote‚ pressure‚ and coerce women into thinking abortion is their only option. This is especially unfortunate when we told they prefer the term “pro-choice‚” yet don’t support women who choose life. Rodrigo could have used this opportunity to donate the money to support mothers who are not as finically stable‚ or towards scholarships so mothers can finish their degree‚ or to pregnancy centers to stalk up on diapers‚ bottles and baby clothes. Instead‚ she has chosen to only pay for the hotel stay‚ transportation‚ and of course‚ the abortion itself‚ leading women no other option but to eliminate their child. It takes guts to have a child in an unplanned pregnancy‚ but that is better than ripping apart a babies guts for the sake of “autonomy.”  This isn’t the first time Rodrigo has publicly supported abortion and likely‚ it won't be the last. When Roe v. Wade was overturned Rodrigo and another artist Lily Allen sang the song “F**k You” which the two dedicated to the five Supreme Court judges who voted to overturn Roe. “We hate you‚” Rodrigo said at the time. Ultimately‚ it's disheartening to see a young lady like Rodrigo believe and project that abortion is something not only to be celebrated but something that somehow “helps” women. This campaign goes directly against what our country was founded on and promotes the rejection of the most basic human right: the right to life.

'You Are Helping Donald Trump': Hayes Condemns SCOTUS For Not Rushing Trump Case

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes journeyed over to CBS and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday to react to the news that the Supreme Court has decided to hear Donald Trump’s argument that he has presidential immunity and therefore cannot be tried in the classified documents and January 6-related cases on an expedited schedule. However‚ that was not good enough for Hayes‚ as he told the Court “you are helping Donald Trump” by not hearing it at a pace that conforms to Hayes’s personal wishes. Hayes told Colbert that “American voters actually deserve the knowledge in either direction. If the man is acquitted‚ if he's found not guilty of an incredibly grave crime‚ American voters deserve to know that as well. One way or the other‚ the American public is owed‚ as a fundamental public interest‚ as a democratic self-interest‚ to know whether‚ in a court of law judged by a jury of his peers under full constitutional due process‚ the man is guilty or not of the gravest political crime of any man in history since the Civil War.”     There is no “public interest” exception to defendants’ rights. The right to a speedy trial is for the defendant‚ not the state or the voters. However‚ Hayes saw something more sinister at play‚ “There is a calendar on the wall. It's got a certain amount of days on it—200 days—and every day you cross through and red. You are doing Trump a favor. You are helping Donald Trump and everyone knows that. The people in the Supreme Court know that‚ Tanya Chutkan knows that‚ Jack Smith knows that Donald Trump's lawyers know it‚ and Donald Trump knows it.” Working the crowd to get their boos in‚ Hayes proceeded‚ “So when they take 15 days to issue this order‚ and then they come back‚ and they say we're going to get to these arguments in seven weeks‚ they're going up to that calendar and they're putting nine weeks of days and they are burning them for Donald Trump in Donald Trump's interest so as to protect Donald Trump from the possibility of being held to account‚ everyone needs to understand that is what they are doing.” Later on All In‚ Hayes would continue this idea that there is some conspiracy at play‚ "It is an clear unmistakable sign from the MAGA majority of the Trump-created court that they are with him. That they are going to use their power to make sure that he does not face trial in an election year for attempting to end American democracy.”   .@chrislhayes: The SCOTUS order "was a clear unmistakable sign from the MAGA majority of the Trump-created court that they are with him. That they are going to use their power to make sure that he does not face trial in an election year for attempting to end American democracy." pic.twitter.com/fgrrP0tEw0 — All In with Chris Hayes (@allinwithchris) February 29‚ 2024   Hayes and people like him cannot have it both ways. Ironically‚ this case is about immunity. If it is true that presidential immunity is not absolute and the president is not above the law and is accountable to it just like every other citizen‚ then he also has all the same rights as every accused citizen. If the Supreme Court's normal pace conflicts with Democrats’ electoral interests‚ then that is just too bad. Here is a transcript for the February 28 show: CBS The Late Show with Stephen Colbert 2/28/2024 CHRIS HAYES: American voters actually deserve the knowledge in either direction. If the man is acquitted‚ if he's found not guilty of an incredibly grave crime‚ American voters deserve to know that as well. One way or the other‚ the American public is owed‚ as a fundamental public interest‚ as a democratic self-interest to know whether in a court of law judged by a jury of his peers under full constitutional due process‚ the man is guilty or not of the gravest political crime of any man in history since the Civil War. But I want to just be clear with folks here‚ everyone here knows the score and I cannot stress this enough. It's like I saw the news about this order‚ right and it's like‚ “Oh‚ they're going to hear the immunity case. They're going to hear arguments” and it's like‚ okay‚ well‚ I guess that makes sense. There is a calendar on the wall. It's got a certain amount of days on it 200 days‚ and every day you cross through and red. You are doing Trump a favor. You are helping Donald Trump and everyone knows that. The people in the Supreme Court know that‚ Tanya Chutkan knows that‚ Jack Smith knows that Donald Trump's lawyers know it‚ and Donald Trump knows it. So when they take 15 days to issue this order‚ and then they come back‚ and they say we're going to get to these arguments in seven weeks‚ they're going up to that calendar and they're putting nine weeks of days and they are burning them for Donald Trump in Donald Trump's interest so as to protect Donald Trump from the possibility of being held to account‚ everyone needs to understand that is what they are doing.

Major Newspaper Headlines on Hunter Biden's Testimony? Hunter's Megaphone!

How can we know just how the major newspapers have a pro-Biden bias? When they present Hunter Biden as the hero and moral authority of his own testimony in the Biden impeachment probe. First‚ they submerge the story‚ and then the framing is in contempt of the factual record. Hunter can say he's never involved Joe in his business -- when it should be obvious to a fifth-grader that this is a lie -- but they run with it anyway.  The New York Post offered the anti-Biden framing of Hunter's evasive‚ sometimes laughable testimony yesterday‚ under the online headline for their cover story.  Hunter Biden testified he was ‘high or drunk’ while writing ‘sitting here with my father’ $5M China shakedown text — but still got the money Their lede by Steven Nelson and Josh Christenson stands out from the others:  First son Hunter Biden claimed in congressional testimony Wednesday that he was “high or drunk” when he wrote to a Chinese associate in 2017 that he was “sitting here with my father”  — shortly before the transfer of $5.1 million into Biden family-linked accounts. A readout of the 54-year-old first son’s closed-door impeachment inquiry deposition was provided to numerous news outlets Wednesday evening citing Hunter’s claim that President Biden had nothing to do with the shakedown of Chinese state-linked CEFC China Energy. The Washington Post published it on bottom half of the front page under the absurd headline: Hunter Biden says he never involved father in business In testimony‚ president's son assails GOP-led impeachment inquiry Matt Viser and Jacqueline Alemany began:  Hunter Biden‚ delivering his long-awaited deposition before a GOP-led congressional impeachment inquiry‚ testified Wednesday that he never involved his father in any of his business decisions‚ and he accused House Republicans of having “built your entire partisan house of cards on lies.” No Republican quotes were on page one‚ but the two Democrat typists added this false statement: "House Republicans have not been able to uncover firm evidence that Joe Biden benefited from -- or played a role in -- the  business pursuits of his family members...." The New York Times put the story on the bottom of A-15 under the headline: Hunter Biden Condemns Inquiry Fueled by 'Lies' Slams G.O.P. in Closed-Door Deposition Democrat typist Luke Broadwater devoted the entire first ten paragraphs to Team Hunter's arguments against the Republicans.  Hunter Biden‚ the president’s son‚ sharply rebuked House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry during a closed-door deposition on Wednesday‚ condemning their investigation as a “partisan political pursuit” that was based on a “false premise” and fueled by “lies.” The Wall Street Journal doesn't read like a Murdoch tabloid‚ it's much more like the lib papers: President's Son Rails Against GOP Probe Hunter Biden strikes a defiant tone as House Republicans make little progress Republicans never make progress -- if you let liberal reporters grade their efforts. Naturally‚ these papers all put the Trump immunity-claim news at the top of the front page. Our USA Today comes in the mail‚ so we don't have it yet‚ but we can tell from the Internet that it's nowhere on their front page. Ditto for the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times.

School defends trans-identifying athlete who caused injuries during girls' basketball game: 'We condemn harmful comments'

A Massachusetts high school voiced support for a trans-identifying male student who caused multiple injuries during a recent girls' basketball game‚ the Boston Globe reported Monday.Earlier this month‚ a girls' high school basketball game between KIPP Academy Lynn and the Collegiate Charter School of Lowell ended in a forfeit after three players were benched due to injuries‚ Blaze News previously reported.A video posted online of the February 8 game captured a female charter school student falling to the ground after a male KIPP Academy Lynn athlete ripped the ball from her hands. The female student was shown clutching her back in pain‚ according to the video. Trans-identified male player for Kipp Academy in MA injured 3 girls before half time causing Lowell Collegiate Charter School to forfeit. \n\nA man hitting a woman used to be called domestic abuse. Now it's called brave. \n\nWho watches this &; actually thinks this is "compassionate‚\u2026 — (@) At halftime‚ the charter school's coach decided to forfeit the game after the remaining players expressed concerns about potentially becoming injured and missing the upcoming playoffs.A press release from the school expressed support for the coach's decision to walk away from the competition."The bench was already depleted going into the game with the 12-player roster having four players unable to play‚" the school stated. "When the coach saw three more girls go down in the first half‚ leaving him with five players‚ he made the call to end the game early.""Once the third was injured‚ the remaining five expressed concern to him about continuing to play‚" the charter school added. "The players feared getting injured and not being able to compete in the playoffs."Casey Crane‚ a spokesperson for the Collegiate Charter School of Lowell‚ said last week that two of the athletes were "injured in association with that player‚" referring to KIPP Academy Lynn's male athlete."We follow the Massachusetts state laws protecting the rights of our students‚" Crane told the Boston Globe. "But we need more guidance on the safety piece and how we do that."According to Crane‚ "Most of the players did not want to continue the game after witnessing the third player injured and the roughness of that play."The male player‚ who identifies as a female‚ is reportedly over six feet tall and has facial hair‚ sources told Fox News Digital. The student has also played on the school's girls' volleyball team and is a girls' track team member.Rhonda "Nikki" Barnes‚ KIPP Academy Lynn's executive director‚ told the Boston Globe‚ "To the best of our knowledge‚ this student has never been on a men's team at KIPP."After the injuries sparked national attention‚ KIPP Academy Lynn released a statement backing its trans-identifying player and condemning negative comments about the student.Samantha Cooke‚ a spokesperson for the school‚ said‚ "We condemn harmful comments being made online toward members of our community‚ and will continue to let the vision‚ mission‚ and principles of our organization guide our actions."Carol Rose‚ executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts‚ claimed that the media attention surrounding the reported injuries is "part of a coordinated attempt nationwide to try to remove LGBTQ people from public life."The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association handbook states‚ "A student shall not be excluded from participation on a gender-specific sports team that is consistent with the student's bona fide gender identity." However‚ students cannot be "included on the roster solely for the purpose of gaining an unfair advantage in competitive athletics‚" it adds.Like Blaze News? 9 times sanctuary policies and a lax approach to illegal immigration endangered American lives

Sanctuary policies as they are presently understood were once limited to handful of California municipalities. In the decades since Berkeley and other leftist enclaves began signaling their extra-national goodwill‚ various cities‚ counties‚ and entire states across the country have taken it upon themselves to actively flout American law in the interest of aiding and abetting those foreign nationals who have stolen into the U.S. For instance‚ a July 2023 report approved by the Los Angeles Police Commission revealed that the LAPD received 783 immigration detainer requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2022 and refused to honor a single one. ICE did not immediately respond to Blaze News' inquiry about how many detainers were declined nationally last year. The prioritization of foreign nationals often comes at a price — a price paid both by American citizens and by those migrants who have entered the nation lawfully. Laken Hope Riley‚ the beloved 22-year-old Georgia nursing student whose brutalized remains were discovered at the University of Georgia last week‚ appears to be one of the latest victims to fall victim to a criminal noncitizen whom sanctuary policies enabled to roam American streets. Below are nine examples from the past seven months in which sanctuary policies and a reluctance to tackle the problem of illegal immigration have enabled known criminal noncitizens to offend and roam freely on American soil. Nilson Granados-Trejo‚ murder Granados-Trejo‚ 25‚ was arrested on Feb. 23 in connection with the fatal shooting of 2-year-old Jeremy Poou-Caceres of Maryland and the grievous wounding of the boy's mother. Granados-Trejo‚ a Salvadoran national who now faces murder‚ attempted murder‚ and assault charges‚ was allegedly involved in a Feb. 8 gun battle between two groups of thugs in Langley Park‚ Maryland. Blaze News previously reported that a Department of Justice immigration judge in New Jersey ordered the Salvadoran's deportation‚ but it did not take. He was later arrested on March 21‚ 2023‚ and charged with theft by the Montgomery County Police Department. ICE filed an immigration detainer for Granados-Trejo‚ but the sanctuary county's detention center reportedly refused to cooperate. This afforded Granados-Trejo another opportunity to momentarily land himself in jail. He was arrested again on Sept. 26‚ 2023‚ for alleged theft‚ obstruction‚ and hindering. Again‚ ICE lodged a detainer and again the Montgomery County Detention Center cut the illegal alien loose on Oct. 12‚ 2023. Months later‚ the Salvadoran ended up in different sanctuary county's jail for allegedly murdering a child and injuring a 17-year-old woman. Prince George's County Police Department Unnamed Honduran‚ rape ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Washington‚ D.C.‚ arrested an illegal alien charged with abduction and with rape by force‚ threat‚ or intimidation on Oct. 12 in Herndon‚ Virginia. While it is unclear precisely when the Honduran stole into the country‚ U.S. Border Patrol initially picked him up near Roma‚ Texas‚ in June 2021 and gave him a notice to appear before a DOJ immigration judge. After allegedly raping and kidnapping a victim‚ the Honduran was arrested and charged by officers from the Herndon Police Department in July 2023. ICE swiftly issued an immigration detainer with the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center in Fairfax‚ Virginia. However‚ the sanctuary county's jail opted instead to cut the alleged rapist loose without notifying ERO. ERO Washington‚ D.C.‚ was later able to catch up with the suspect and place him under arrest on Oct. 12‚ 2023. "ERO Washington remains committed to apprehending criminals who are released back into the local population when a detainer is not honored‚" ERO Washington D.C. Field Office Director Russell Hott said in a statement. "We will not allow such noncitizen offenders to roam free and victimize innocent people." Jose Guadalupe Menjivar-Alas‚ vehicular homicide Menjivar-Alas‚ an illegal alien from El Salvador‚ allegedly killed an American mother and son in Broomfield‚ Colorado — a sanctuary state — on Dec. 12‚ 2023‚ while drunk driving. The incident occured just days after he was sentenced in a previous alcohol-related driving case. Menjivar-Alas‚ who ICE confirmed to KDVR-TV has been deported four times — in June 2009‚ June 2012‚ November 2014‚ and January 2015 — was driving at an estimated speed of 100 miles per hour when he allegedly hit a vehicle near Broomfield High School. Inside the vehicle was Melissa Powell‚ 47‚ and Riordan Powell‚ 16. The American mother died on impact. Her son later died in a hospital. Kim Powell‚ the sister-in-law and aunt of the crash victims‚ told KDVR‚ "My family was killed by a dangerous man who set the precedent he would continue to drive under the influence after 6+ convictions. The focus needs to sharply remain on the person who committed this crime and the system that allowed this to happen." The Denver Post indicated that Menjivar-Alas pleaded guilty to two charges of driving ability impaired‚ one charge of driving under the influence‚ and a harrasment charge and was sentenced — four days before allegedly killing the mother and son. While prosecutors wanted to lock him up‚ Boulder County Judge Zachary Malkinson instead sentenced the illegal alien to work release and probation. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal for the Salvadoran in 2009‚ which remains on the books. Honduran MS-13 gang member‚ manslaughter ERO Baltimore arrested an illegal alien from Honduras on Dec. 12 who was repeatedly arrested for violent crimes but set free in sanctuary counties. The unnamed killer‚ a validated member of the Hyattsville‚ Maryland‚ chapter of MS-13‚ was first encountered by U.S. Border Patrol near the Rio Grande Valley‚ Texas‚ in April 2014. After receiving a notice to appear before a DOJ immigration judge‚ he was transferred to ERO Harlingen‚ then to to the Office of Refugee Resettlement in Lincolndale‚ New York. He ultimately ended up in Hyattsville. According to ICE‚ In November 2015‚ the Prince George's County Police Department arrested and charged the MS-13 member with second-degree assault. That evidently wasn't enough to oust the gang member. The DOJ immigration judge in Baltimore administratively closed the gang member's immigration proceedings the next year. The PGCPD arrested the Honduran again in August 2016 and charged him with concealing a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest. He was convicted of the latter charge and sentenced to 30 days in prison. In November 2016‚ he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder‚ second-degree murder‚ and several other felony charges‚ prompting ERO Baltimore to lodge an immigration detainer with the Prince George's County Detention Center. The Honduran was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter in November 2018 by the Circuit Court for the sanctuary county and sentenced to 10 years in prison‚ but ultimately he only received 751 days and had the remainder of his charges dropped. The Prince George's County Detention Center cut the MS-13 member loose in January 2019 and refused to honor ERO Baltimore's detainer. Finally‚ ICE caught up with him in December 2023. ERO Baltimore Pierre Lucard Emile‚ rape Emile‚ a 31-year-old illegal alien from Haiti‚ was deemed inadmissible at a port of entry in Brownsville‚ Texas‚ in December 2022. He was issued a notice to appear before an immigration judge in Boston. Months later‚ in September 2023‚ Emile was arrested by Boston Police in Dorchester‚ Massachusetts‚ for rape‚ indecent assault‚ and battery on a developmentally disabled person. ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston field office indicated it lodged an immigration detainer against Emile‚ but a municipal court in Dorchester set the alleged rapist free. "Disturbingly and despite our filing an immigration detainer‚ this individual was released back into the community by the criminal court‚" ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyon said in a statement.. ICE ultimately caught up with Emile and arrested him on Jan. 9‚ 2024. Daniel Hernandez Martinez‚ violent crime spree Martinez‚ 29‚ is an illegal alien from Venezuela. Within hours of his June 27 arrival in New York City‚ he allegedly began violating the law and customs of the land. His apparent crime spree reportedly began small at a Costco in Brooklyn‚ where he allegedly absconded with sneakers‚ hats‚ slippers‚ and razor blades. Martinez was subsequently charged with petty larceny and then released‚ reported the New York Post. Days later‚ he allegedly stole from a Duane Reade in Manhattan. In a repeat performance the next day‚ July 7‚ Martinez allegedly assaulted a security guard who attempted to prevent him from shoplifting. Still‚ the sanctuary city enabled Martinez to keep doing whatever he was keen to do. That was apparently pulling out a "large knife" and rushing an undercover officer. Despite a new menacing charge‚ the illegal alien was cut loose once again. Martinez‚ permitted to roam the streets of the sanctuary city‚ allegedly randomly attacked Jeffrey Bradac‚ 52‚ in Times Square on July 31‚ then savagely beat a woman in Midtown on Aug. 21‚ according to police. Menacing‚ assault‚ weapon possession‚ and other charges weren't enough to keep the Venezuelan locked up. Set loose on the sanctuary city once again‚ he was arrested for allegedly attempting to steal bikes on Aug. 28. He went on to assault a police officer at Beth Israel Hospial and was finally sent to Rikers Island. Elgin Antonio Bamaca Zacarias‚ rape Zacarias‚ an illegal alien from Guatemala‚ was arrested in Lynn‚ Massachusetts — a sanctuary state — in August 2023 and arraigned at the Lynn District Court on felony charges including two counts of rape‚ three counts of assault to rape‚ one count of assault and battery on a pregnant victim‚ and additional domestic assault charges. ERO Boston indicated it attempted to interview the alleged rapist after the discovery that he was in the country unlawfully but "was denied the opportunity to do so before he was released on supervised probation for his pending criminal charges from the Lynn District Court." Although he was cut loose‚ ICE was able to nab Zacarias on Oct. 11 in Lynn. Juan Vicente Zavala Lopez‚ murder Dallas Police officers called to a shooting on Sept. 14‚ 2023‚ arrived to find a 44-year-old man firing into a pickup truck‚ allegedly murdering his roommate‚ Ruperto Mondragon Salgado. The shooter‚ identified by police as Juan Vicente Zavala Lopez‚ soon took aim at police and began shooting. After a brief exchange of gunfire‚ Lopez reportedly got into a truck and attempted to flee‚ driving into oncoming traffic. Following a brief pursuit‚ Lopez resumed his ballistic attack on the officers‚ non-fatally striking one in the vest‚ according to KXAS-TV. He was ultimately tracked down to a barn in Lewisville‚ then taken into custody. Police indicated that Lopez had a substantial criminal history‚ faced charges in California‚ spent 18 months in a Texas state prison‚ and had previously been deported nine times. Jose Antonio Ibarra‚ murder Ibarra‚ a 26-year-old illegal alien from Venezuela‚ reportedly entered the U.S. unlawfully in September 2022 and was "paroled and released for further processing." Blaze News previously reported that on Sept. 14‚ 2023‚ New York City Police Department officers arrested the Venezuelan national and charged him "with acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17 and a motor vehicle license violation." Despite these charges‚ New York City — a "sanctuary city" — cut Ibarra loose. According to ICE‚ Ibarra "was released by the NYPD before a detainer could be issued." Ibarra apparently also had a warrant out for his arrest as of December 2023‚ having dodged a court appearance in Georgia over shoplifting charges‚ reported the New York Post. Months later‚ he would allegedly savagely murder Laken Riley‚ "seriously disfiguring her body … by disfiguring her skull‚" according to court documents. Like Blaze News?
