This week‚ a mentally disturbed anarchist and active-duty Air Force member named Aaron Bushnell lit himself on fire and proceeded to burn himself to death while shouting “Free Palestine” in front of the Israeli Embassy in Washington‚ D.C. In his suicide note‚ he explained just why he had self-immolated: My name is Aaron Bushnell‚ and I am an active-duty member of the United States Air Force. I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest but‚ compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers‚ it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal. Now‚ nearly every word of this note is factually wrong. The Israeli Defense Forces are not perpetrating a genocide in Gaza—far from it. The only genocidal force in the current Gaza conflict is Hamas‚ which seeks to kill every Jew—and also seeks as many Palestinian deaths for the cameras as humanly possible. Meanwhile‚ the IDF is taking extraordinary and unprecedented measures to protect civilian life even as genocidal Hamas terrorists hide themselves—and Israeli hostages—in tunnels beneath civilian areas and among civilians themselves. As John Spencer‚ chair of urban warfare studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point‚ says‚ the “steps that Israel has taken to prevent casualties is historic in comparison to all these other wars.” Despite Israel’s complete air superiority in Gaza‚ Israel has sent its own forces in on the ground in order to try to preserve life—and in the process‚ Israel has had nearly 240 soldiers killed and 1‚400 injured in the Gaza Strip. The reality is that an American dousing himself with flammable liquid and then lighting a match is obviously a sign of mental disturbance that ought not be celebrated. No matter the rationale for such a suicide‚ the situation is a tragedy and a sin. Perhaps the biggest unanswered question here is how the American military allowed someone like Bushnell into the ranks. And yet many members of the Left are now cheering self-immolation—treating Bushnell as a martyr and a hero. Cornel West‚ who is currently running for president‚ tweeted‚ “Let us never forget the extraordinary courage and commitment of brother Aaron Bushnell who died for truth and justice!” Former Green Party candidate Jill Stein tweeted‚ “Rest in power Aaron Bushnell.” This is dangerous stuff. It’s dangerous because it acts as an incentive to the disturbed to harm themselves and others in the name of supposedly virtuous politics. And indeed‚ the celebration of Bushnell’s death follows hard on the Left’s embrace of riotous violence in 2020 in the name of George Floyd. So long as the cause is just‚ in the views of the Left‚ any terrible act becomes merely an example of overzealousness. And extremism in pursuit of wokeness is no vice. Our political environment is facilitating dangerous insanity. It is easy enough for people like Cornel West and Jill Stein to celebrate the pseudo-heroism of disturbed people lighting themselves on fire. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Thursday that will authorize the release of certain documents related to financier and convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. “There needs to be a mechanism in some of these rare circumstances where people can get the truth‚” DeSantis‚ a Republican‚ said before signing HB 117‚ titled Disclosure of Grand Jury Testimony‚ during a Palm Beach news conference. HB 117 will amend Florida statute 905.27 to give courts discretion to authorize disclosure of grand jury testimony in some cases where it furthers a public interest‚ such as the Epstein case involving underage girls. The Florida House and the Florida Senate unanimously passed the measure earlier this month. The legislation is limited to cases in which a suspect is dead and the crimes involve sexual behavior with minors. Authorities found Epstein dead in his New York prison cell in August 2019 where he was in custody after his arrest on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. Authorities ruled his death a suicide‚ but family members contested that claim. He previously pleaded guilty to lesser charges in 2008. The grand jury materials in question revolve around a plea deal that year. Epstein pleaded guilty to Florida state charges of soliciting and procuring a minor for prostitution in exchange for a non-prosecution agreement that allowed him to avert a possible life sentence. He served 13 months in a work-release program‚ paid his victims‚ and registered as a sex offender. DeSantis called that plea agreement “a black spot on our justice system.” The governor called the punishment “effectively a slap on the wrist‚ given the severity of the crimes.” The 2019 charges included sexual assault of underage girls from 2002 to 2005‚ paying them to recruit others‚ and engaging in a criminal conspiracy to engage in these practices. In 2020‚ the FBI arrested Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell on charges of conspiracy‚ sex trafficking of minor children‚ and perjury. A jury convicted Maxwell on five of six counts‚ including one count of sex trafficking of a minor‚ in December 2021. She faces a second criminal trial for two charges of lying under oath about Epstein’s abuse of underage girls. Last year‚ a judge sentenced her to 20 years in prison. Jena-Lisa Jones‚ one of Epstein’s alleged victims‚ spoke before DeSantis signed the bill in Palm Beach. “We have had no closure whatsoever on what has happened with these crimes‚” Jones said. “Epstein was charged for his crimes in 2006 and we are finally going to learn why.” “We have been left in the dark for so long with no answers to what is going on and why things played out the way they did‚” she added. “It would have saved literally hundreds of girls from being put in a position that none of us ever wanted to be put in.” Another of Epstein’s alleged victims‚ Haley Robson‚ spoke. “I can’t express the gratitude I have for this bill‚” Robson said. If you’re struggling to pay for groceries‚ you’re not alone. Staples such as bread‚ lunch meats‚ dairy products‚ and eggs have seen price increases of 20% to 40% in the past three years. President Joe Biden is blaming grocery stores for “gouging” consumers‚ but there’s just one problem with that explanation: His administration’s own data disprove it. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics‚ prices paid by business and consumers alike have increased 18% on average since Biden took office in January 2021. The higher prices that American families face today are simply the higher cost of doing business being passed along to the consumer. Despite this fact‚ the White House has repeatedly called for grocery stores to lower prices—as if a business owner sets prices arbitrarily. In a recent commercial‚ Biden also highlighted the phenomenon of “shrinkflation‚” where products get smaller‚ but the price remains the same. The president again called on companies to stop the practice‚ as if it could be done by executive fiat. Grocery stores cannot simply reduce the prices they charge while the prices they themselves pay continue to rise. If a dairy farmer charges a grocer 20% more for milk‚ then the grocer will also charge a family 20% more for milk. That’s not gouging anyone. It’s merely staying in business. Over the past three years‚ firms have been slow to pass along the full freight of cost increases to consumers as those businesses sought to maintain market share. Only in the past couple of months has the increase in prices paid by consumers finally caught up to the higher prices paid by businesses. That hasn’t stopped Biden from citing corporate profits‚ which are collectively at or near a nominal record high‚ as evidence of price gouging. However‚ he once again seems unaware of the data published by his own administration that directly contradict his talking points. These record-high profits aren’t adjusted for inflation. That’s important‚ since a business needs to use its earnings to buy new inventory‚ among other things. If the cost to replace inventory rises‚ then the money earned by the business doesn’t go as far as it used to. The same amount of money buys less. Individuals are experiencing the same thing in their own finances. The average American worker is earning more per hour than ever before‚ but those earnings buy less than they did just three years ago. That’s because prices for the things the worker buys have risen much faster than his or her wages. Adjusting for price increases reveals corporate profits have been falling lately‚ not rising‚ and record-setting numbers in business earnings are like the record wages earned by workers—both buy less. Still‚ the fact that businesses are not to blame for high food prices is small consolation to American families‚ who are having to pay not only a record high amount for food‚ but also a higher percentage of their income today than they did 30 years ago. And if greedy corporations gouging consumers aren’t the culprit‚ then what caused food prices to hit stratospheric levels so quickly? It was the unprecedented amount of government spending‚ borrowing and printing of money in the past few years. By 2021‚ emergency COVID-19 spending was going to sunset and federal government expenditures were set to plunge back to pre-pandemic levels. Instead‚ Biden advocated for replacing those trillions of dollars in one-time emergency spending with a plethora of left-wing boondoggles. Thus‚ multitrillion-dollar deficits became institutionalized. Growth in government spending today has so outstripped growth in the economy that the deficit is at levels never seen outside of a recession or emergencies—like a war or COVID-19. In collaboration with the big spenders in Congress‚ the Biden administration has added $6.7 trillion to the federal debt‚ and much of that borrowed money was financed by the Federal Reserve creating it out of thin air. As the government spends‚ borrows and prints money‚ it devalues the currency‚ so your dollars don’t go as far as they used to. By hinting that he will use executive power to crack down on mass illegal immigration for the first time in his administration‚ President Joe Biden is admitting that he already has the necessary authority to do so. This completely undercuts his attempt to blame Republicans in Congress for not giving him additional laws‚ money‚ and staff to get the job done. Nonetheless‚ expect Biden to dodge the blame when he visits Texas Thursday‚ his second visit to the Mexican border in a 54-year political career. Biden will be in Brownsville at the same time Donald Trump will be in Eagle Pass‚ farther up the Rio Grande in Texas.  With his overall approval rating at 38% and a mere 28% of Americans approving his handling of immigration‚ Biden is “leaning in on an issue he’d long ignored‚” according to Politico. As global political risk consultant John Hulsman writes in City A.M.‚ a political “rule of thumb is that if the president’s approval rating is over 60% … he can pretty much do what he wants. If it falls below 40%‚ he is trying to squelch rumors that he is dead.” Earlier this month‚ Biden failed to fool the American people into thinking the Senate “bipartisan” border bill was a magic bullet to end mass illegal immigration. That more and more Americans are seeing the price of his open border puts Biden in a real bind—a sort of Catch-22‚ or more accurately “catch-and-release ‘24.” In Joseph Heller’s novel‚ the Catch-22 was that a World War II bomber pilot would be crazy to fly any more missions. But if he formally claimed to be insane to get out of flying more missions‚ that meant he was sane and had to keep flying. Biden’s immigration conundrum is that he urgently needs to use his executive authority to stanch his falling approval rating over his abandonment of border security and enforcement‚ but he has claimed for three years that he had no such power. If he maintains that fiction‚ his approval ratings will likely continue to fall. But if he takes real action to secure the border‚ reduce asylum fraud‚ or increase deportations‚ he offends his far-left base and loses that support. Meanwhile‚ Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has his own immigration Catch-22. He has been using a provision of immigration law called parole to let in tens of thousands of inadmissible aliens a month. By law‚ this parole should be temporary‚ for “humanitarian” reasons or the “significant public benefit” of the United States. It should be granted “case-by-case‚” but Biden and Mayorkas created several programs to mass-parole inadmissible aliens‚ including one allowing 36‚000 of them a month from just four countries‚ including Venezuela. It appears the Department of Homeland Security used parole to let in Jose Ibarra‚ the Venezuelan who is accused of murdering University of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley last week. Before releasing Ibarra‚ Mayorkas’ border agents had no way of knowing whether he had a criminal record in Venezuela. As The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project Director Mike Howell pointed out‚ Mayorkas can either say he made every decision case-by-case‚ in which case he is responsible for Ibarra‚ or he can claim that millions are being paroled into the U.S. automatically‚ which is against the law. In December 2022‚ I laid out the six biggest lies underlying the Biden border strategy. The biggest lie was blaming vague‚ worldwide factors for mass illegal migration then claiming there was nothing his administration could do about it but release or parole thousands of illegal immigrants a day into the interior of the United States. In fact‚ all along‚ the administration has had the power to detain‚ expel‚ and deport inadmissible aliens under existing law. Without any new laws or money‚ Biden could have raised the bar for asylum claims to discourage the massive fraud we’re seeing. Instead‚ he preferred catch-and-release. He could have used the Migrant Protection Protocols with Mexico and the Asylum Cooperative Agreements with Central American countries to keep most potential asylum claimants outside the U.S. until their claims were heard by immigration courts. But he abandoned these agreements immediately upon taking office. In Brownsville‚ Biden will hear nothing new from his staged engagements with Border Patrol agents and local politicians‚ all of whom depend on him for their jobs. The White House has already scripted Biden’s remarks. After falsely claiming that the recent Senate border bill was “the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border in decades‚” he will ask “congressional Republicans to stop playing politics” and “to provide the funding needed‚” said spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre. That’s his line and he’ll stick to it. But Biden heard some truth in a meeting with state governors recently‚ when Republicans handed over a letter asking him to secure the border. “After digesting the gist‚” reports Politico‚ “Biden shot back coolly that the things the governors wanted were all in the bipartisan border legislation that congressional Republicans refused to consider.” Anyone who has watched Biden lately‚ much less heard him speak‚ would doubt he was able to digest any gist that quickly‚ or shoot back coolly. If he had read it‚ he’d know the Senate border bill would do the opposite of securing the border because it would expand and codify the very open border tools Biden is currently using and it would provide billions more dollars to bring in and sustain more illegal immigrants. We know‚ and Biden knows‚ that he already has the power to fix the border and immigration chaos. That he has chosen not to‚ for over three years‚ is proof that his primary interest has never been national security or the safety of the American people. Any concessions Biden makes now‚ however Draconian the Left may paint them‚ will be window-dressing to prop up his poll numbers and insufficient to stem the flow of illegal migration he has unleashed on Americans. Ted Cruz‚ Bill Hagerty‚ Rick Scott‚ Ted Budd and Mike Braun are behind the initiative to ban the digital dollar scheme from coming to fruition. Their concerns‚ as the bill’s name suggests‚ are civil rights and freedoms that might suffer because of increased surveillance CBDCs have the power to facilitate. The goals of the bill‚ among others‚ are for the Federal Reserve not to be given the right to “use central bank digital currency for monetary policy‚ offer services directly to individuals‚ and for other purposes.” Senators Scott and Budd made it clear in their comments that the reason for their opposition is that the digital dollar would “open the door for the federal government to surveil and control the spending habits of all Americans.” Cruz noted that one of the consequences of harvesting sensitive personal information through a CBDC system would be the ability to quickly and efficiently freeze people’s assets “for any reason.” According to Cruz‚ “The Biden administration salivates at the thought of infringing on our freedom and intruding on the privacy of citizens.” This is not a speculative scenario‚ since various governments/banks have already been doing this even without CBDCs‚ in order to suppress even lawful civil dissent. And if in the future the Fed were to issue the digital dollar‚ it would have to turn to Congress for authorization‚ the bill envisages. Another prominent opponent of the introduction of the CBDC in the US is former President Donald Trump‚ currently campaigning to get reelected.
