Biden’s Big Abortion Lie in His State of the Union Address

My mom taught me that saying something you know is not true is a lie. President Joe Biden told some whoppers Thursday night in his State of the Union speech‚ including several about abortion. Biden‚ for example‚ vowed to “restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land.” No president‚ of course‚ can establish the “law of the land‚” let alone reinstate an overturned Supreme Court decision interpreting the Constitution. Biden was really saying that he would sign into law the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act‚ which is supported by nearly every Democrat in Congress. In Roe v. Wade‚ the Supreme Court held in 1973 that our written Constitution protects an unwritten right to privacy that‚ in turn‚ includes an unwritten right to abortion. The high court created an elaborate set of rules for each trimester of pregnancy to determine which pro-life legislation crossed the line. (Spoiler alert: Those rules aren’t in the Constitution either). The Supreme Court tried to make sense of the resulting confusion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey‚ a 1992 decision revising Roe and substituting a new set of rules. It didn’t work. Finally‚ in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization‚ the court in 2022 admitted that it never should have jumped into the abortion fray‚ overruled Roe and Casey‚ and returned abortion regulation to the American people and their elected representatives. At the time‚ Roe represented a more liberal abortion policy than any state‚ or virtually any other country on Earth‚ had ever chosen for itself. Still‚ the Supreme Court left just a smidgeon of room for a few limits on abortion. The Women’s Health Protection Act would squelch even those meager attempts to protect human beings in the womb. Democrats’ bill would prohibit any government—federal‚ state‚ or local—from taking any action that could‚ even potentially‚ reduce the likelihood of abortion. In fact‚ the legislation would require all governments everywhere to repeal any pro-life laws‚ regulations‚ or policies that might already be on the books. Nearly three-quarters of the states‚ for example‚ have laws requiring either parental consent or notification before a minor may get an abortion. Nationally‚ 70% of Americans—including 57% of Democrats—favor at least the latter. The Supreme Court upheld such laws under Roe‚ but the Women’s Health Protection Act would make requiring any kind of parental involvement impossible. More than 70% of those surveyed oppose diverting federal tax dollars to support abortion‚ including a majority of those who identify as “pro-choice.” The Supreme Court repeatedly held that Roe did not require government to subsidize abortion‚ but the Women’s Health Protection Act would require it. Most Americans believe that health care workers with religious objections should not be forced to participate in abortion. The Supreme Court has applied the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act to protect the exercise of religion from coercive‚ pro-abortion government policies. The Democrats’ bill explicitly makes RFRA inapplicable to any situation that involves abortion. Even when inventing a right to abortion‚ the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade referred dozens of times to women‚ mothers‚ and “unborn children.” In fact‚ the high court held that the presence of a second human being meant that the so-called right to privacy was not unlimited. Even the proposed Women’s Health Protection Act‚ as recently as 2019‚ used “woman” or “women” nearly three dozen times and stated its purpose as protecting “a woman’s ability to determine whether and when to bear a child.” The current version deletes all but one use of “women” (in the bill title) and now states its purpose as protecting “a person’s ability to determine whether to continue or end a pregnancy.” The idea that Biden‚ or those who wrote his speech‚ knew none of this is laughable. They have read Roe v. Wade and examined the Women’s Health Protection Act. They know that one of those bears almost no resemblance to the other. They know‚ therefore‚ that the Women’s Health Protection Act would not “restore” Roe but would instead impose an even more radical abortion regime on the whole country. Biden could have been honest about that in his speech Thursday night‚ but instead chose to lie. Have an opinion about this article? Pauvre Enfant: An American (Abortion) in Paris

The French woke up and chose violence. On Monday‚ France became the world’s only country to explicitly enshrine a right to abortion into its constitution. The French parliament overwhelmingly approved it‚ 780 to 72—a greater than 10-to-1 spread. Fittingly‚ they held their vote in the Palace of Versailles‚ one of the epicenters of French Revolution violence. The first-ever public “sealing ceremony‚” a tradition reserved for only the most significant laws‚ was scheduled to be held on Friday—ironically on International Women’s Day. Historically‚ you could see this coming. After the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022 returned the issue of abortion to the American people in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization‚ French President Emmanuel Macron opportunistically expressed his “solidarity” with American women and called abortion a “fundamental right.” That was a far cry from his lukewarm support earlier in the year for expanding legal abortion from 12 to 14 weeks—a position that was still more restrictive than the law at issue in Dobbs. Nonetheless‚ Macron has seized the moment and pressed on under his new abortion rights banner. Last March‚ he pledged constitutional protections for abortion‚ leading the charge by short-circuiting French lawmakers‚ drafting a bill himself‚ and convening a special session of Congress‚ rather than allowing the abortion amendment to face a referendum. Monday’s vote was framed with French patriotism‚ filled with impassioned speeches and repeated‚ long standing ovations. Female lawmakers “smiled broadly as they cheered.” Supporters amassed in Le Parvis des Droits de l’Homme (Human Rights Square) in central Paris‚ singing‚ dancing‚ and waving French flags. The Eiffel Tower sparkled‚ with the message “#MYBODYMYCHOICE” projected onto its side. How bourgeois to believe that the peasants and preborn have rights. The scene in Paris was eerily similar to January 2019‚ when the New York state Assembly passed the state’s Reproductive Health Act. Lawmakers and crowds gave a standing ovation. Then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed state landmarks like the spire of One World Trade Center (where 11 children in the womb were killed on 9/11) to be lit in Planned Parenthood’s signature pink to “shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow.” The celebration‚ in their minds‚ befitted a new law‚ albeit one that actually stripped away all protections for vulnerable women and children. Suddenly‚ you no longer had to be a doctor to perform abortions on eight-pound babies. Fetal homicide—the killing of a wanted child in the womb by an abusive boyfriend or violent stranger—was no longer a crime. And abortion clinics became less regulated than a Famous Joe’s Pizza. Some observers look at these events as part of an inevitable march toward abortion on demand and without apologies. I believe‚ instead‚ that we are living through the erratic back-and-forth venture to the far ends of a cultural pendulum swing. The pendulum—in addition to being a real method of torture during the Spanish Inquisition and a fictional execution device devised by Edgar Allan Poe—can explain much of the world as we know it. From major historical events to the intricacies of interpersonal relationships‚ the pendulum clearly demonstrates the application of some outside influence or force pushing an object from equilibrium to extreme‚ before gravity brings it barreling back again past neutral to the other extreme. From Roe to Macron‚ we have watched a perpetual pendulum‚ death to life to death and back. Death to life: The 2019 New York Reproductive Health Act was an extreme position on abortion. Polling at the time showed the law went beyond the likings of the more than two-thirds of the state’s self-described pro-choice supporters who opposed third-trimester abortions. Enshrining abortion as they did‚ New York lawmakers went too far‚ alienated their base‚ and energized pro-lifers. The national conversation about late-term abortion brought about a “dramatic shift” in attitudes on abortion in the following weeks. Younger Americans and Democrats‚ seeing the truly radical nature of being “pro-choice‚” led the pendulum swing from pro-choice to pro-life. Life to death: Four months later‚ Alabama passed its six-week heartbeat bill‚ swinging the pendulum for life. While the law would have protected Alabama moms and babies‚ Madison Avenue spin raised questions and concerns for the American public. Fearmongering over women’s access to legitimate medical care spearheaded a disinformation campaign that led a majority of Americans to oppose the Alabama law. A legal challenge delayed implementation for years. And the pendulum began to swing back. Death to life: With the popularity of Roe—if not always actual knowledge about Roe—still clearly ensconced in the American psyche‚ the U.S. Supreme Court took up the Dobbs case challenging Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. When six of the nine Supreme Court Justices boldly stood for human rights in the face of a draft opinion leak‚ media bombardment‚ and death threats‚ the pendulum swung back again‚ and it was a huge win for life. Life to death: The overturning of Roe was a major shock that “reverberated across Europe’s political landscape‚ forcing the issue back into public debate” and became Macron’s motivation: “Unfortunately‚ [Dobbs] is not isolated: In many countries‚ even in Europe‚ there are currents of opinion that seek to hinder at any cost the freedom of women to terminate their pregnancy if they wish.” For those who’ve doubted that American efforts for life are tied to those outside our borders‚ and that international and foreign policy on life are just as important as that in America‚ are you listening now? For decades‚ France followed the United States in lockstep on matters of reproductive policy‚ always one to two years later. Dobbs changed all that‚ and pushed France to break ranks. Dobbs drove France‚ just as New York eventually drove Dobbs.  The next chapter‚ then‚ will likely be the grief and reinvigoration of the European pro-life movement. The French Marche pour la Vie (March for Life) gathered 2‚500 demonstrators for Monday’s vote in Versailles. Its president‚ Nicolas Tardy-Joubert‚ marked the day of sorrow but declared‚ “it should also be a day for hope‚ because we need to wake up the concerns and tend the hurts. … It is a long-term process.” The French bishops called for fasting and prayer: “Let us pray that our fellow citizens will rediscover the taste for life‚ for giving it‚ for receiving it‚ for accompanying it‚ for having and raising children.” Together we rise‚ and together we fall‚ with fits and starts along the way. Alabama‚ Dobbs‚ and the gathering storm of human rights activists‚ forward. New York‚ France‚ and U.S. state ballot initiative losses‚ back. The French have the right idea: Rather than interpreting their constitution‚ they’re changing their constitution. But what happened to human rights for all human beings and their ideals of liberté‚ égalité‚ fraternité? What happened to their solidarity with the marginalized‚ even to the point of revolution? And when is the pendulum going to stop this erratic swinging so we can focus on the real issues at hand? The Daily Signal publishes a variety of perspectives. How Tall Was The World’s Tallest Ever Horse?

Once upon a time‚ there was a horse called Sampson. A shire gelding born in Bedfordshire‚ England‚ in 1846‚ Sampson was special for one reason – he was a really big deal.Shire horses are known to be pretty large beasts. They are a British breed of draft horses that are valued for their strength‚ especially for pulling farming equipment or‚ historically‚ for towing barges along canals. These horses also have a close history with the brewing industry‚ as they used to lug brewer’s drays for delivering beer.Today‚ working horses like shires still perform various tasks‚ but they are also bred for recreational purposes‚ such as riding and showing. As is clear from simply looking at one‚ shire horses are big animals. The average height of a stallion at the point known as the “withers”‚ the ridge between the horse’s shoulder blades‚ is between around 163 centimeters (64 inches or 16 hands) and 183 centimeters (72 inches or 18 hands)‚ with mares generally falling to the lower end. The weight of these horses can vary from 816 to 1‚088 kilograms (1‚800 to 2‚400 pounds). Now enters Sampson. When he walked into the stable‚ all the other horses had long faces‚ because he truly was a monster. There isn’t much information about Sampson out there‚ which is a shame given his achievement. But according to Guinness World Records‚ Sampson was 219 centimeters (86 inches or 21.5 hands) tall. That’s about 1.5 Danny Devitos in height‚ or just under the height of André the Giant‚ who was 224 centimeters (7 feet 4 inches) tall.Sampson also neighed weighed‚ 1‚524 kilograms (3‚360 lbs)‚ which is more than the weight of a Toyota Corolla. After he was crowned the world’s tallest horse‚ Samson was renamed Mammoth – a far more appropriate name for such a beast.

Can Peacocks Fly?

Can Peacocks Fly?

Wind rushes around your ears as a cascading train of iridescent feathers soars over your head. Toes curled‚ neck extended‚ rear-end seemingly doomed for landing: a peacock has just taken flight‚ and frankly‚ it makes no sense at all.The elaborate ornament’s eye-like feather tips are an alluring display to the opposite sex (and other males)‚ and its size is held up as a shimmering example of an exaggerated sexually selected trait. But when the tail tips are down and the train is doing what trains do best‚ you can’t help but wonder: can peacocks fly? The answer is yes – and while it was thought that the fact that they can was precisely what makes them so impressive to potential mates‚ research has found the enormous tails might not be all that bad for flying. Why do peacocks spread their feathers?Peacocks spread their feathers to attract a mate‚ presenting many colors simultaneously as part of an impressive and complex display. According to a 2013 paper in the journal Behavioral Ecology‚ males can have over 150 feathers in their elaborate tail‚ known as a train‚ each topped with an iridescent eye-like pattern known as an ocellus‚ or eyespot. Those saucy eyespots appear to be crucial to a peacock's reproductive success.Image credit: Karen Grigoryan / Shutterstock.comEach ocellus on the peacock’s tail exhibits a rich diversity of color thanks to nanostructures that create a purple-black center surrounded by concentric blue-green and bronze-gold circles. The study found that when those eyespots are masked‚ their reproductive success drops to virtually zero‚ so spreading their feathers is crucial if they want to pass on their genes to the next generation. But isn’t it all a bit cumbersome?Yes.If you were to ask a male peacock‚ this science communicator reckons they might have suggestions for anything other than a literal train when taking to the skies. If only they weren’t so goddamn sexy. The enduring appeal of the cumbersome peacock train was thought to rest in the fact that it is so hefty‚ because if a male peacock is strutting around – all alive and uneaten by predators – that shows that he is a strong male‚ capable of surviving despite dragging around such a weighty ornament. However‚ if it has its downsides‚ research suggests they have little to do with flying – or‚ at least‚ the taking off part. You have to admit‚ it is pretty impressive.Image credit: kajornyot wildlife photography / Shutterstock.comCan peacocks fly?Yes‚ peacocks can fly. In fact‚ research found that they can do it pretty well despite having such big tails.“The peacock's train is often cited as a classic example of a ‘costly’ product of sexual selection‚” wrote the authors of a 2014 paper in the Journal Of Experimental Biology that concluded the peacock’s train doesn’t detrimentally affect take-off flight performance. “This is partly due to the low drag of the train and its consequent trivial effects on take-off power. These results do not necessarily mean there are no costs associated with possessing an ornate train; rather‚ any such costs are small with limited meaningful functional significance to take-off performance.”So if you see a feathered crucifix ascending from the heavens‚ an iridescent halo shimmering aloft its shadowy silhouette‚ you’ve probably not been visited by a biblically accurate angel. A flying peacock is just coming in to land‚ and it’s got designs on your sandwich. All “explainer” articles are confirmed by fact checkers to be correct at time of publishing. What Is Jupiter’s Great Blue Spot And What Color Is It Really?

What Is Jupiter’s Great Blue Spot And What Color Is It Really?

Four hundred years after the discovery of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot a spot of a different color has been added‚ but its story is a bit more complicated. The first thing to know about the Great Blue Spot is that it does not emit or reflect light at around 450 nanometers‚ and therefore is not actually blue. Nor‚ despite our common association of blue with cold‚ is it related to Jupiter’s Great Cool Spot.Instead‚ the blueness appears on maps of the magnetic field. We can’t see magnetism‚ let alone in color‚ so a tradition has evolved that north magnetic poles should be portrayed as red and south poles as blue. This has nothing to do with the rare cases where magnetism does affect color‚ such as when iron-oxide nanoparticles present a rainbow spectrum depending on magnetic field strength. In the bar magnets many of us played with as children‚ this leads to a simple half-and-half marked with paint‚ but real-world magnetic fields are considerably more complex. Variations in field strength lend themselves to be shown in deeper or paler shades‚ as in the map of Jupiter’s field below. The Great Blue Spot is magnetically very south‚ but is located near Jupiter's equator.Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/John E. ConnerneyNotably‚ Jupiter’s magnetic field is not like Earth’s‚ where the north and south poles are almost directly opposite each other‚ with both relatively close to the geographic pole. Even on Earth‚ there are strange anomalies‚ but one of the first things Juno revealed about Jupiter is that its field is stranger still‚ which turned out to include the Great Blue Spot. The first signs of this came in the concentrations of north and south magnetic fields revealed in the map above. With Jupiter’s Great Red Spot being one of its most familiar and enduring features (even if it has been shrinking recently) it was inevitable the south magnetic anomaly would be dubbed the Great Blue Spot.As reported this week‚ the Great Blue Spot has an atmospheric jet associated with it‚ demonstrating that the magnetic field anomaly is shaping the giant planet’s atmosphere. Exactly what is driving this remains unclear‚ but it does prove the Blue Spot matters. The Great Blue Spot is also the place where Jupiter’s magnetic field is changing the fastest. Back in 2019‚ Dr Kimee Moore of Harvard University said in a statement: "It is incredible that one narrow magnetic hot spot‚ the Great Blue Spot‚ could be responsible for almost all of Jupiter's secular variation‚ but the numbers bear it out."The causes of the Great Blue Spot have yet to be fully explained. There is no exact match in the Northern Hemisphere‚ with a long magnetic band instead and various other non-dipole regions. This has at least saved astronomers from needing to come up with a name that isn’t “The other Great Red Spot”.Jupiter’s magnetic field is thought to be a consequence of the highly conductive ocean of metallic hydrogen at its core. Exactly what it is about the metallic hydrogen that leads to such complexity high above is still a matter of speculation. Even when the Galileo spacecraft plunged into Jupiter’s atmosphere‚ it was never going to get remotely deep enough to collect answers before being crushed by the mighty pressure. So far‚ two things we have learned about the Spot are that it is migrating eastward‚ and is associated with zonal winds around 3‚500 kilometers (2‚100 miles) deep within the gas planet.Explaining the Spot is considered enough of a priority that it’s the focus of six fly-bys in Juno’s extended mission along with a greater focus on the moons.

In Under 70 Years‚ The Way We View Earth Has Massively Changed

Humans have been traveling around the world for as long as our species has existed‚ and after a while it became important to know where one is and where one can go. The oldest surviving maps are over 2‚500 years old‚ and since then humans' ability to create surveys of their surroundings has massively improved thanks to technological advances. But it's only recently that everything has changed. The technological inventions that brought those changes are in photography‚ optics‚ aviation‚ and aeronautics. Basically since the mid-1800s‚ humans have been able to produce visual records of the world around us‚ but it was not until the 1930s that we had photographs of the curvature of the Earth – from a modest altitude of 6.4 kilometers (21‚000 feet).Aviation showed that a bird's-eye view could provide new insights. A few years later‚ high-altitude atmospheric balloons breached a world record‚ reaching over 22 kilometers (72‚395 feet) and providing details about the atmosphere we had not seen before. But it was with the first satellites‚ and then astronauts‚ that our planet came fully into focus. The iconic image of Earth rising above the lunar horizon‚ as photographed from the Apollo 10 Lunar Module.Image credit: NASANASA has put together a wonderful collection of historic photos of Earth from high in the air and from space‚ as well as Earth from other planets. It shows what a special and yet fragile place our little corner of the universe really is. Those missions‚ whether crewed or robotic‚ deserve their kudos (and the photos are brilliant) but there’s a lot more to this that deserves our attention. To celebrate its 30th anniversary‚ NASA released this new version of the "Pale Blue Dot" image captured by the Voyager mission in 1990‚ a distant view of our planet.Image credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechThe first television image of Earth from space from the TIROS-1 weather satellite in 1960.Image credit: NASAThe first functioning weather satellite was launched 64 years ago. On April 1‚ 1960‚ satellite TIROS - Television Infrared Observation Satellite – began taking images of our planet. It revealed that Earth’s orbit is not a place from which to exclusively look at the great beyond. Space agencies are associated with astronomy and astronautics‚ but they also have fleets looking down on Earth. In six-and-a-half decades‚ we have gone from simple imaging to a wide array of space missions keeping an eye on all the changes in our planet.Clouds‚ precipitations‚ winds‚ ice sheets‚ electromagnetic fields‚ and gravity – everything is up for grabs. Satellites from NASA‚ the European Space Agency‚ and many others work independently and together to better understand what our planet is like and how it is responding to the climate crisis. These eyes from the sky provide fundamental data that informs many types of choices: from your weather-dependent outfit to international policies. Satellite information about our planet plays a huge role and continues to improve‚ with more sophisticated and specialized observers from the heavens.

Daily Show Warns Texas Is Being Invaded By... Republicans

Comedy Central sent Michael Kosta to Eagle Pass‚ Texas‚ to report on the border crisis for the Friday installment of The Daily Show‚ but according to him‚ the real crisis is about the reaction to the crisis as Texas is “attracting a flood of Republican governors‚ Congressional delegations‚ and even billionaire weirdos.” Kosta began with a narration where he declared‚ “Eagle Pass‚ Texas‚ has become the epicenter of the national immigration debate‚ as over the last year‚ an unprecedented number of migrants crossed here to apply for asylum. And for many observers‚ this complex issue can only be summed up in one word.” After playing five soundbites from an assortment of Republican politicians using the word “invasion” or “invaded‚” Kosta interviewed the locals to see what they had to say. One man claimed‚ “They’ve come and taken over the town.”     Another woman‚ who would later be revealed to be a farmer named Magali Urbina‚ added‚ “It’s our land and there’s just people coming in.” A second man‚ later identified as river outfitter Jessie Fuentes‚ echoed the sentiment‚ “They’re causing‚ you know‚ havoc and craziness.” Seemingly scolding another woman‚ Kosta wondered‚ “Shouldn't you be welcoming? Don't you have any empathy for the journey they have taken to get here?” “They’re not welcome‚ get the hell out of our place‚” she replied. The first man then returned to add‚ “You can't move around without seeing them. You can't get a meal in a restaurant. Can't get a hotel room unless you want to pay $400.” Kosta then dropped the act‚ “Wait‚ who are you talking about‚ right now?” to which the man replied‚ “The state Guard from Florida‚ Tennessee‚ Arkansas‚ Idaho.” The woman who told people to “get the hell out” was then revealed to be Maverick County Democratic Chairwoman Juanita Martinez who claimed‚ “The invasion here is from Governor Abbott and the Trumpers and the MAGA people.” If there wasn’t a border crisis in the first place‚ Republicans wouldn’t be there in the second place‚ but that is not how Kosta saw it “Yes‚ Eagle Pass has been overrun since Governor Abbott declared a crisis at the border and sent in the Texas National Guard‚ attracting a flood of Republican governors‚ Congressional delegations‚ and even billionaire weirdos.” The “billionaire weirdo” in question was Elon Musk in a cowboy hat. That aside‚ the entire point of Kosta’s segment was try to portray the border crisis as complicated‚ as evidenced by some people in Eagle Pass not wanting the GOP’s “help.” However‚ when it came to giving the other perspective‚ Kosta featured the most cartoonish voices he could find‚ including a guy with a Confederate battle flag‚ in order to portray those concerned about the original crisis as racists. Here is a transcript for the March 7 show: Comedy Central The Daily Show 3/7/2024 11:13 PM ET MICHAEL KOSTA: Eagle Pass‚ Texas‚ has become the epicenter of the national immigration debate‚ as over the last year‚ an unprecedented number of migrants crossed here to apply for asylum. And for many observers‚ this complex issue can only be summed up in one word.  GREG GIANFORTE: Invasion.  TED CRUZ: We are being invaded.  MARCO RUBIO: We are being invaded.  KARI LAKE: We’re being invaded. DONALD TRUMP: We’re being invaded just like it's a military invasion.  KOSTA: But how are the locals coping with its relentless onslaught?  MAN 1: They’ve come and taken over the town.  MAGALI URBINA: It’s our land and there’s just people coming in.  JESSIE FUENTES: They’re causing‚ you know‚ havoc and craziness.  WOMAN 1: There’s chaos.  KOSTA: Shouldn't you be welcoming? Don't you have any empathy for the journey they have taken to get here?  JUANITA MARTINEZ: They’re not welcome‚ get the hell out of our place.  MAN 1: You can't move around without seeing them. You can't get a meal in a restaurant. Can't get a hotel room unless you want to pay $400.  KOSTA: Wait‚ who are you talking about‚ right now? MAN 1: The state Guard from Florida‚ Tennessee‚ Arkansas‚ Idaho.  KOSTA: Oh.  MAN 3: What you need to be afraid of ours some of these convoys of people –  KOSTA: You’re talking about Central American caravans?  MAN 3: No‚ no we are talking about the that are invading the country here‚ not from Mexico.  JUANITA MARTINEZ: The invasion here is from Governor Abbott and the Trumpers and the MAGA people. KOSTA: Yes‚ Eagle Pass has been overrun since Governor Abbott declared a crisis at the border and sent in the Texas National Guard‚ attracting a flood of Republican governors‚ Congressional delegations‚ and even billionaire weirdos.
