The House Ethics Committee opened an inquiry into Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), who has been indicted on federal bribery charges, the panel announced on Wednesday. An investigative subcommittee will look into whether Cuellar “solicited or accepted bribes, gratuities, or improper gifts; acted as a foreign agent; violated federal money laundering laws; misused his official position for private gain; and/or made false statements or omissions on public disclosure statements filed with the House,” a press release said. Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS) will serve as chair of the investigative subcommittee while Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) will serve as ranking member. Reps. Ben Cline (R-VA) and Madeleine Dean (D-PA) were picked to round out the team. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced in early May the unsealing of an indictment against Cuellar and his wife Imelda in the Southern District of Texas, accusing them of participating in schemes involving bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering. Cuellar, a 68-year-old who this year is running for an 11th term in the House, accepted $600,000 in bribes from two foreign entities — an energy company controlled by Azerbaijan and a bank headquartered in Mexico City — in exchange for official acts as a member of Congress, the DOJ said. In response to the indictment, Cuellar said he and his wife were “innocent of these allegations.” Cuellar also said he “proactively sought legal advice from the House Ethics Committee, who gave me more than one written opinion, along with an additional opinion from a national law firm.” The congressman added, “Furthermore, we requested a meeting with the Washington D.C. prosecutors to explain the facts and they refused to discuss the case with us or hear our side.” Rules for the House Ethics Committee dictate that the panel shall either establish an investigative subcommittee or report to the House describing its reasons for not establishing an investigative subcommittee within 30 days of a member being “indicted or otherwise formally charged with criminal conduct.” Members of the House Ethics Committee voted unanimously to establish an investigative subcommittee, the panel said. The committee also noted that it is “aware of the risks associated with dual investigations and is in communication with the Department of Justice to mitigate the potential risks while still meeting the Committee’s obligations to safeguard the integrity of the House.” In concluding its statement, the House Ethics Committee said, “No other public comment will be made on this matter except in accordance with Committee rules.”

Texas state authorities arrested an international fugitive and illegal immigrant who was wanted for murder and resided in Colony Ridge, the embattled land development north of Houston that has become infamous for systematically attracting illegal immigrants through its marketing and financial practices. Splendora Police, working in conjunction with federal authorities with the Department of Homeland Security, arrested Leo Acosta Sanchez, an illegal immigrant wanted by international police for murder, after police performed a traffic stop. The Splendora Police Department explained that it “apprehended a fugitive murder suspect wanted by Interpol” in a post on Facebook that included pictures of the suspect. Police added that Acosta Sanchez “had been illegally residing in our state and country” and was “known to travel between the City and her residence in Terrenos,” another name for Colony Ridge, a controversial land development that systematically attracts illegal immigrants through its financial and marketing practices. “Acosta entered the United States as a nonimmigrant on Aug. 20, 2023, and violated the terms of her admission,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement stated, also noting that she is originally from Mexico. “She remains in ICE custody pending disposition of her immigration proceedings.” Colony Ridge, the sprawling land development north of Houston, Texas where Acosta Sanchez resided prior to her arrest, has been the subject of a series of Daily Wire investigations detailing the development’s marketing to illegal immigrants. Led by brothers John and Trey Harris, Colony Ridge encourages potential buyers to “own land in the United States” and accepts foreign passports as a form of identification when offering loans. The development made headlines late last year after a teen was allegedly abducted at gunpoint inside Colony Ridge and was shot at as he fled his captors. After a special legislative session last Fall, Texas directed state law enforcement to step up its presence in the area to combat the violence that plagued the community. The development has come under heavy legal scrutiny from both federal and state officials and was hit by a joint lawsuit from the Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The two federal agencies accused the development of engaging in predatory financing and bait-and-switch sales while churning through borrowers “in a cycle of foreclosure.” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also hit Colony Ridge with a lawsuit recently, with the Texas official telling The Daily Wire that “literally every sale” made by Colony Ridge could have been in violation of consumer financial protection law. The arrest of Acosta Sanchez, who entered the United States in August 2023, comes as the country has faced the worst border crisis in its history. Officials have so far recorded over 9.5 million nationwide encounters and 1.7 million estimated illegal immigrant gotaways during Biden’s term.

The presiding judge in Donald Trump‘s hush money trial in New York dismissed the jury for the rest of the day on Wednesday, meaning a verdict will have to wait. Jurors are expected to resume deliberations at 9:30 a.m. ET on Thursday. In the hours leading up to the dismissal, jurors made two requests. The first note they sent to the judge was to ask for transcripts of witness testimony from former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker. A second request asked to rehear the judge’s jury instructions, which is expected to be resolved on Thursday. The trial, which began last month, has featured jury selection, opening arguments, testimony from nearly two dozen witnesses, and closing arguments. Jury deliberations began on Wednesday. At the heart of the case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg are 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal damaging information around the 2016 election. Trump is accused of improperly masking reimbursements to repay his former lawyer, Cohen, for a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence on an alleged extramarital affair in 2006 by classifying them as legal expenses. If a guilty verdict is ultimately dealt, Trump will become the first former U.S. president to have been convicted of a crime. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and denied the affair with Stormy Daniels. The presiding judge is expected to schedule a separate hearing to determine a sentence. Possible alternatives to imprisonment include probation or community service. Trump has also been trying to fend off three other criminal matters ahead of a potential 2020 rematch against President Joe Biden in November’s White House contest. Biden’s campaign hosted an event outside the courthouse at which actor Robert De Niro claimed that American freedoms “will perish from the Earth” if Trump wins the election. Some last-minute controversy began on Wednesday with the jury instructions that Merchan gave right before deliberations began, prompting Trump to say the trial was “rigged.”

Days after the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks, a Massachusetts school district known for pushing diversity, equity, and inclusion was accused of supporting white supremacy because of its response to the attacks, according to emails viewed by The Daily Wire.  On October 13, a sixth grade science teacher at Vassal Lane Upper School in the Cambridge Public School District accused the administration of supporting “white colonists” and criticized them for using the word “terrorist,” according to an email obtained by Parents Defending Education and shared with The Daily Wire. The teacher, who is a self-described “white Jewish educator,” was responding to a message that went out on October 12 called “Israel-Hamas War.”  “In your message yesterday, you communicated that CPS [Cambridge Public Schools] places more value on white lives than brown Muslim lives,” the teacher wrote. “A few thoughts on word choice: The word terrorist brings deeply racialized connotations. You conspicuously did not mention Palestine or Gaza, therefore not including any of our community with connections to those places and people in your extension of care. Israelis are ‘innocent civilians’ but Palestinians simply do not exist.” While acknowledging that there were “acts of violence” being committed against Israelis, the teacher attacked “white parents,” saying the district only cared when white people were being harmed.  “Your email ignored this entire picture of life for brown, Muslim Palestinians, and in doing so, told your employees, students, and the people of Cambridge that when a group of highly educated, white parents tells you to abandon your values of racial justice and human dignity for all, you will do so. You have told us that white lives matter and all lives matter, rather than naming the brown lives that matter,” the email said.  The teacher added that the district had chosen “white supremacy over human rights” and that the “current crisis is clearly a humanitarian one caused by white nationalist rhetoric.”  Erika Sanzi, the director of outreach for Parents Defending Education, told The Daily Wire that it was concerning that a teacher in the district was going after parents because of their skin color.  “Like so many districts, Cambridge employs fanatical people who think that condemning Hamas for the October 7th massacre is white supremacy and can’t abide parents who stand up for Israel if they are white,” Sanzi said. “This seems disqualifying for a public employee who works with other people’s children.” The Daily Wire asked Cambridge Public Schools to provide a copy of the October 12 message that prompted the anger of the teacher as well as a group of Muslim parents in the district.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP A previous statement from District Superintendent Victoria Greer on October 9 only made generic comments related to the attack without referencing Hamas.   “I want to take a moment to acknowledge the conflict that has unfolded between Israel and Palestine,” Greer wrote. “Our thoughts and hearts are with the Israeli and Palestinian people, particularly those near and far who have been impacted by the unrest.” On October 11, the district’s communications director wrote in an email that they needed to be more explicit in their condemnation of Hamas in their future messages, sharing a tweet from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) that condemned both Hamas and Israel.  Other emails from teachers in the district are critical of Greer’s comments related to the October 7 attacks. The Daily Wire asked the district if they had altered their messaging in any way after the criticism from teachers. On Wednesday, Greer was given a 90-day notice to resign by the Cambridge School Committee. Greer has been facing criticism from the community over her handling of hiring and alleged toxicity, according to The Harvard Crimson.  In the wake of the Hamas terror attack, radical activist groups across the country have worked to get educators to integrate anti-American, pro-Palestinian, and anti-colonialist resources from a plethora of leftist organizations into their classrooms.
