Harvard University found itself in the social media crosshairs — over its own published policies — after university President Claudine Gay struggled to call out students who have joined protests calling for the genocide of Jews. A woman caught in the Maui fires thought she lost everything when her home burned in the flames. The situation took hold so quickly that she didn’t have time to find all of her pets before evacuating‚ and she believed they hadn’t made it. Fortunately‚ the fates stepped in and reunited her with her dog—appropriately named Lucky.  The Maui Humane Society shared Lucky’s touching story via Facebook. The organization explained that he and his owner‚ Chris‚ had been living in Lahaina with her cat and second dog when the Maui fires broke out. When Chris was able to go back to her home‚ she couldn’t find Lucky or her cat.   Facebook Local Humane Society Spent 4 Weeks Trying to Capture Dog Displaced in Maui Fires Meanwhile‚ the Humane Enforcement team had been working hard to catch a “small white dog” who had made a home in a Lahaina cemetery. Several locals had phoned the shelter about the animal‚ and rescuers made several attempts to catch the dog. But he evaded them each time. For an entire month‚ the rescuers returned to the site to leave food and water and try to coax the animal‚ dubbed “ghost dog‚” to safety. Finally‚ Humane Enforcement Officer Jutta Mueller was successful.  Once she got the dog back to the shelter‚ she found he was microchipped‚ and‚ of course‚ it was Lucky.  Facebook “Our team called Lucky’s owner‚ Chris‚ right away to let her know that they had Lucky‚” the organization wrote. “Chris was thrilled to know that her little Lucky was able to escape the flames and survive.” Chris shared that the cemetery‚ which was close to her home‚ had always been Lucky’s favorite place to run and roam. So she wasn’t surprised to hear he’d been living there for four weeks.  “Lucky’s story is one of survival‚ resilience‚ and hope‚” added the Humane Society. It hasn’t been the easiest month for a dog named Supersport‚ who was recently hit by a car. A community member rushed the injured dog to the Austin Animal Center. Supersport had to have his leg amputated. Thankfully‚ they were able to find the pup’s owner‚ who rushed to the city shelter for a happy reunion with his now amputee dog. Image from Facebook. With several broken bones and abrasions‚ Supersport needed immediate care. Unfortunately‚ that led to the amputation of his right rear leg at the hip. Sadly‚ the surgery and resulting aftercare were beyond the financial ability of Supersport’s dad. He is currently experiencing homelessness. As a result‚ Supersport’s dad relinquished ownership of his beloved pet in a selfless move. This permitted Austin Pets Alive! to provide the necessary surgery and follow-up care. A Happy Amputee Dog Reunion While the two will hopefully experience a more permanent happy reunion‚ they are happy to be visiting at the APA! shelter. As Supersport heals from the accident‚ his dad will continue to visit him daily. According to CBS Austin‚ APA! representatives said‚ “The joy and love in their reunion were unmistakable. Their smiles‚ a testament to their unbreakable bond‚ filled our clinic with hope and warmth. Muataz Azooz is a double amputee — and a survivor. From 2004 until 2009‚ he worked at the Ministry of Justice in Baghdad‚ Iraq. Part of his job involved working closely with the US Embassy. As a result of that work‚ he was a victim of a targeted terrorist attack. A “sticky” bomb was in a car and detonated with a remote control device. That bombing resulted in the amputation of both of his legs. At Ibn Sina Hospital‚ located in the Green Zone in Baghdad and affiliated with the US Embassy‚ Muataz had both legs amputated above the knee. After leaving the hospital in Baghdad‚ Muataz went to Thailand for rehabilitative treatment. This included several surgical procedures‚ neurosurgery‚ physiotherapy‚ and treatment for additional health problems. Relocated to the US‚ he settled in Colorado. Muataz also has a daughter with Down Syndrome who benefits from the van. The family uses the van for medical appointments‚ shopping‚ and errands around Denver‚ CO‚ where he lives now. Muataz added that the family is happy and comfortable going on trips and outings‚ feeling like a regular family‚ able to go about in freedom because of the van provided through this act of generosity. It has been a real “life-changer” for him and his family. Looking To The Future As our interview with Muataz wrapped up‚ we asked if he had any additional thoughts. He began‚ “I would like adapted vans for people with disabilities to be made available to everyone.” Muataz elaborated‚ saying that everything becomes more expensive with a disability and that pricing for disability-accessible options is very high.
