The Truth About The Taxicab Theory

The Truth About The Taxicab Theory

The taxicab theory is not new to the realm of relationship theories, but it is one that has resurfaced in popularity. Since one of my favorite things to do is break down theories that pop off and circulate on TikTok, this one caught my attention recently. These theories often look ridiculous because they’ve been given silly names, but there is usually some truth to them — which is why they’re worth examining. The taxicab theory attempts to answer questions like: How do men choose who they want to marry? When do men make that decision? What can women do? The theory originated years ago on HBO’s “Sex and the City,” and it’s now made its way to TikTok. The idea is that a taxicab on the road is comparable to a man in the dating pool: If the taxicab light is off, the driver is not looking to pick up any riders, but once the taxi turns its light on, the driver will pick up the first person they see. Similarly, if a man is not ready to date, he will not commit; but once he’s ready to settle down, he will commit to the first woman who comes across his path. This TikToker gives a succinct explanation of the theory: @tracy_sokat Replying to @haleyyloftuss ? ? #taxicabtheory #dating #datingadvice ♬ original sound – Tracy Sokat   Her final words of advice — “Put your damn arm down and stop trying to hail a cab and stop trying to hail a cab that has its light off” — are good ones. Basically, this theory says that no matter how hard you try to convince or how much you beg a man to see that you would be a good wife, a man who is not ready to settle down, won’t settle down. The taxi’s light is off. He is not looking to pick up a passenger. He is on his way elsewhere. He’s clocked out for lunch. If, however, the taxi driver does pick you up when the light is off, you run the risk of being given a “shut up ring” later on down the road. But when the light on the taxi turns on, the theory says the man will marry the next woman who crosses his path. The theory as a whole is interesting, and there is some truth to it. One person on X tweeted about a guy her friend married who she met on Hinge, and someone else quote tweeted it to be an excellent example of the taxicab theory: Screenshot: X Screenshot: X Of course, this has caused absolute mayhem on the internet. Women have started freaking out, wondering if their husband even loves them, asking themselves, “Was I the ideal woman or just the available one?” Another person on X said it shouldn’t take a man half a decade or more to figure out if the girl he’s dating is the one he wants to marry, to which someone else quote tweeted their response to the taxicab theory: Screenshot: X Screenshot: X No sanity should be lost over this. Part of the problem with this theory is the people who want to use it to point fingers at men and make them out to be misogynists who just toy with women. And I don’t think that is the case. Ultimately, it is both parties’ responsibility not to waste each other’s time and respect what the other person wants out of the relationship. So, a man who is not ready for marriage should not hang onto a girl who desperately wants to get married. That is cruel. And it shouldn’t take five to six years to decide if you’re dating the girl you want to end up with. WATCH: The Comments Section with Brett Cooper The underlying message to the taxicab theory is that timing is paramount, but generally, I think this breakdown is a bit too simple. This theory says that once a man decides the time is right, he’ll just pick up the next girl that comes across his path. But there is more to it than that. A couple guys replied on TikTok making this point: Screenshot: X Screenshot: X These are important perspectives to mention. I think that when a man is ready for marriage, he will be even more careful with who he chooses to date. He will be pickier because he will seek out women who he believes he can build a life with, which will hopefully make the process easier and faster. Without these perspectives, the taxicab theory just seems a little too simple and doesn’t give guys enough credit. But for men, successful relationships aren’t solely based on timing. There are cases when love changes everything, where a man meets a woman and instantly wakes up and knows he’s ready. He becomes willing to make the relationship happen because of the woman. One guy on X commented saying that men will be with who they truly want to be with. (This is the whole “if he wanted to, he would” thing.) Screenshot: X That said, there is a different timing component to this theory. Men do not have the same urgency that women intrinsically feel because women are on a biological time clock. Even if a woman has just the faintest inkling of a desire to have children, she should be intentional about working toward marriage. As women, we have a small window of time in our lives when that is possible, whereas men are designed to sow seeds their entire life if they want to. Because of this, a man may not want to settle down at the same time the woman they are dating does. But the pressure is more intense for women, both biological pressure and just the pressure we put on ourselves. If you are dating a man who is not ready to propose, you are dating a man who is not ready to be married. Maybe he loves you. Maybe he doesn’t love you enough. Maybe he doesn’t think you’re the one. Who knows. Whatever the reason, the fact of the matter is that he’s just not ready. But it will not matter how much you try to convince him or force his hand, and he may still not be ready five or six years down the road. That will only lead to resentment. This is empowering information that can equip you in your dating life. As a woman, if marriage is something you want, this is when you cut loose and leave because there will be another taxicab who could have his light on. Or maybe the same taxi will come back around when he is ready, when he realizes what he’s lost, and he will have his light on. But there are other opportunities, you shouldn’t waste precious years with someone who is not in a taxi that is ready to pick you up while you let other perfectly wonderful taxis pass you by. The takeaway here is that there is not one perfect theory or formula for relationships or dating. The best step to take is to focus on mutual respect for each other and alignment on your values and timeline. That requires hard conversations and self-awareness. But when you are dating, you need to figure out if your significant other is on the same page and if their taxi light is even on. You also need to make sure they are reciprocating the time, energy, and love that you are putting into the relationship as well. We are often blinded by infatuation and fear; instead, be confident and brave. Date with intention because it will save you time and heartache in the end.

Darius Rucker Breaks Silence On Arrest For Drug Possession: ‘Paying The Price’

Country singer Darius Rucker, former frontman for the band Hootie & the Blowfish, just broke his silence about his brush with the law due to drug possession. The 58-year-old recording artist was pulled over in February 2023 and released without charges. He later found out there was a warrant out for his arrest. Rucker spoke with People about his reaction to the pending charges. “It was so awesome,” he told the outlet. “I mean, I looked back at that and I was like, ‘I got stopped by a police officer and I had a little bit of pot, and I think a little bit of some mushrooms or something in the car, and he let me go.’ And a year later I got a phone call from a buddy that said, ‘I think I just saw an arrest warrant for you.’ It shocked me.” The country star said he couldn’t believe he was dealing with an arrest warrant. “My friends who were in the police department were like, ‘Have you pissed somebody off up here? Because this is crazy that they’re doing this a year later,’” Rucker added. “But I think somebody wanted to make an example out of me, and they did. And I’m handling it with my lawyers, and paying the price, and we’ll move on with our lives.” “It sucks,” he said of the incident. “Fifty-seven years, never seen inside of a police car or jail, and I get busted for that.” The singer was arrested in February 2024 after the warrant was issued in December. Rucker was charged with two counts of simple possession/casual exchange of a controlled substance and one count of a violation of Tennessee’s vehicle registration law, per People. He was released on a $10,500 bond. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Rucker told the outlet he’s just trying to move forward and hopes fans get to know him better via his upcoming memoir, which recounts hard partying during the heyday of Hootie & the Blowfish. Rucker said his ex-wife likely saved his life by giving him an ultimatum about doing hard drugs. “I hope my journey pleasantly surprises people and makes them go, ‘Wow,’” the musician said. “Not a lot of people know a lot about me. They know my music and what I do, but they don’t know how you got there.”

Dennis Quaid Says Drug Culture In Hollywood Changed When Belushi Died

Dennis Quaid opened up about his past use of cocaine and said the drug culture in Hollywood changed when John Belushi died from an overdose in 1982. During his appearance on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” to talk about his upcoming movie “Reagan” — about the life of late President Ronald Reagan — the 70-year-old actor said when he was doing movies early on in his career, he was “doing blow” and was “operating on 2-3 hours of sleep.” “I’d like to say it didn’t affect my performances, but it did, how could it not,” Quaid said. “You know, when you are not operating at 100 percent capacity.” When pressed by the host if he had friends who died of drugs, “The Rookie” star said yes, and then mentioned the late-star Belushi. “You know it all started [when] John Belushi died,” Quaid said. “Cocaine before that was, it was in People magazine, doctors saying that it wasn’t addictive. It was a party thing or whatever. Everything was fine and dandy until … in fact, it [cocaine] was in the budget of movies.” “You know all that funny money set aside,” he added. “You would go to meetings and executives would have it there on their desk. It was just a thing. … And then when John Belushi died, that changed everything. Or at least that’s when it started to change.” Quaid said he doesn’t “miss it a bit” after he “got sober for it,” which took four years getting over. He said it was really “a hole” that he needed to fill, and that’s when he went “back to being a seeker again.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Earlier in the interview, the two talked about how Quaid lost his way for years with religion after being raised Baptist. “I’ve always been a seeker,” Quaid said, as he talked about after high school starting to study other religions around the world. “Finally, after going through the God of cocaine and that era of my life, came back to the red words of Jesus, rereading the Bible, and that brought me back.” “I read the Bible and then I read all the other books … but reading the Bible again, the red words of Jesus again and the things that Jesus said, and that lead me to a personal relationship with God,” he added. “And that’s really in the end what it’s all about.” Related: WATCH: New Trailer For ‘Reagan’ Movie Starring Dennis Quaid Just Released

Democrats Plan Virtual Nomination For Biden Ahead Of Chicago Convention

Democrats Plan Virtual Nomination For Biden Ahead Of Chicago Convention

Democrats are planning to nominate President Joe Biden as the party’s candidate for the White House in 2024 by a roll call vote weeks before the Democratic convention. The ploy would avoid complications that could leave Biden off the ballot in Ohio. It would also avoid a potentially embarrassing protest by Biden’s critics within the Democratic Party if his nomination were to take place at the convention. The nominating process will mimic the process used in 2020 when the nominating was done virtually because of COVID-19. The early nomination will allow Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to be the party’s official nominees in time for Ohio’s ballot deadline for candidates, which falls on August 7, according to The Wall Street Journal. Democratic National Committee chairman Jaime Harrison has attacked Republican lawmakers in Ohio for not extending the ballot deadline for Biden as the legislature has done for candidates in previous years. “Democrats will land this plane on our own,” Harrison told WSJ. “Through a virtual roll call, we will ensure that Republicans can’t chip away at our democracy through incompetence or partisan tricks.” The law that put the rule in question in place was originally passed 15 years ago on a bipartisan basis. At the time, Democrats held a majority in the state House. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose has pushed back against Democrats’ attacks. LaRose wrote for WSJ on Monday that the Democratic Party has left no room for him to help them legally, and it has refused to deal with Republican lawmakers in Ohio to score the deadline extension needed to nominate Biden at convention. “Unable so far to get a legislative fix to the problem they created, Democrats have flipped the script. They used to say refusing to enforce election rules was a threat to democracy; now refusing to bend the rules is a threat,” LaRose wrote. The roll call nomination could also save the president and Democrats from embarrassing protests over Biden’s handling of Israel’s war against Hamas. A vocal group of Democratic activists have pressured the administration to take a hard stand against Israel’s war, and Democratic officials are preparing for at least some of that angst to play out as protests during the Democratic convention August 19-22. One such protest group, the Coalition to March on the DNC, has applied with the city of Chicago for a permit to protest the convention multiple times, but without getting approval. The group withdrew a request for a permit recently in protest over actions authorities took against an anti-Israel protest camp at DuPaul University.

California Transgender Parental Notification Policy Fails To Make It Onto Ballot

A proposed policy that would have required California public schools to inform parents if their children change their gender identity has failed to get enough signatures to appear on November’s ballot. Protect Kids California, the parental rights group that launched the ballot measure, announced Tuesday that they had failed to collect enough signatures. The group collected about 400,000 of the 546,651 signatures required to appear on the ballot. The deadline to submit the signatures to election officials was Wednesday. We want to thank our tens of thousands of supporters and volunteers for this truly historic effort! Together, we collected over 400,000 signatures – an unprecedented achievement for a 100% grassroots effort. You really are amazing! ? While it is unfortunate we did not have… pic.twitter.com/DdRJinW2uY — Protect Kids CA (@ProtectKidsCA) May 28, 2024 “While we are disappointed we didn’t meet the threshold to qualify for the ballot, we are encouraged by the amount of support from every sector of the state,” said campaign organizer Jonathan Zachreson, one of the group’s co-founders, as well as a Roseville school board member. Many of the signatures came from the Los Angeles area, Zachreson said. The ballot initiative essentially had three parts. The initiative would have banned puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender surgeries on minors and disciplined any violating doctor. It would also have repealed the California law that allows biological males to compete in girls’ sports and use girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. Finally, the initiative would have prohibited schools from keeping a child’s new gender identity secret from their parents. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The group said they had faced “severe headwinds” from the beginning. Back in January, Protect Kids California filed a lawsuit against Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, over his characterization of the ballot initiative. Bonta had slammed the measure and dubbed it the “Restricts Rights of Transgender Youth” initiative in his office’s official summary, which appeared on the petition supporters had to sign to get it on the ballot. This confused supporters and hampered the parental rights group’s effort to gather signatures, Zachreson said at the time. “A lot of the feedback is ‘Why did you write the initiative this way?’ and they’re focused on the title and summary and we’re like ‘Well, we didn’t write it. That was Attorney General Rob Bonta,'” Zachreson said. “While we do feel like it’s going well, it definitely has an interfering effect on the process as well as from a donor perspective as well as for the signature gathering effort,” he said. In April, a judge denied the parental rights group’s motion. The group still plans to appeal that decision. “If we had a little more time or a little more money, we would have easily qualified for the ballot,” the group said Tuesday.
