Blackie Lawless recalls the advice he received from David Gilmour

Blackie Lawless recalls the advice he received from David Gilmour

Not even the biggest fans of W.A.S.P. could expect this, but the band's vocalist Blackie Lawless once had the chance to meet the legendary Pink Floyd singer and guitarist David Gilmour and the musician gave him some advice. Lawless recalled that incredible meeting in an interview with Guitar World and revealed that Gilmour is his favorite guitar player. Blackie Lawless recalls the advice he received from David Gilmour “I've heard other guitar players say they approach guitars like being a singer. My favorite guitar player is David Gilmour. We were at an EMI dinner one night, and he was there. I started talking to him and said, ‘By far, you're my favorite guitar player. How do you come up with those melodies?’" “He didn't bat an eye and goes, ‘I'm a singer. I think like a singer.’ I was standing there and thought, ‘Duh.’ In other words, if you're looking for a melody, it's about what enhances the song. I subscribe to that theory because I feel like it can't not give you an advantage because you're just thinking differently,” Blackie Lawless said. The band W.A.S.P. was formed in Los Angeles back in 1982 and released their praised self-titled debut album two years later. That record was followed by the successful album "The Last Command" in 1985.  The band is currently formed by Blackie Lawless (Guitar and vocals), Mike Duda (Bass – Since 1995), Doug Blair (Guitar – Since 2006) and Aquiles Priester (Drums – Since 2017). They have released 16 studio albums, the most recent being “Reidolized: The Soundtrack of The Crimson Idol” released back in 2018. Some of their most famous tracks are: “Wild Child”, “I Wanna Be Somebody”, “Animal”, “Sleeping (In The Fire)” and “Miss You”. https://youtu.be/GoS9pUchhjYThe post Blackie Lawless recalls the advice he received from David Gilmour appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Vinny Appice says his hearing is terrible after decades on the road

The drummer Vinny Appice was born back in 1957 in Brooklyn, New York City and started his career in 1975, a few decades after his older brother, Carmine Appice, who is also a successful drummer. Over the decades he had the chance to play with many incredible artists and be part of bands like Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell. But like any job, being on the road constantly with a band can also have some negative side effects, one of which is hearing loss. The musician said in an interview with Drum Syndicate Podcast (Transcribed by Blabbermouth) that his hearing is terrible. Vinny Appice says his hearing is terrible after decades on the road "I wear little swimming plugs that cut out the top end, and that's it. And my hearing sucks. The TVs in this house are all closed captioned. And I'm always asking my beautiful girlfriend Leslie, 'What? What did he say?' So, yeah, my hearing is terrible." "I wore 'em — probably first started with Sabbath, 'cause it was so loud. We played with monitors, the first Sabbath tour, 'Mob Rules'. There were fucking refrigerator-sized cabinets, two of 'em, behind me, just cranked. But you can't play that stuff through in-ears. It's Black Sabbath and Dio, and you've gotta feel the power. Unfortunately, it takes a toll on your ears." "It's funny. I don't hear great — like on the TV, if they're talking, I'm better off with the closed captions, or in a room with a lot of noise, forget it. It's hard to hear anything. But I can hear bad tuning, wrong notes, wrong key, wrong movements, whatever, timing and music while we're on stage. I'll be playing, it's loud. 'What the fuck? That's the wrong note.' And somebody's hitting the wrong note and stuff like that. I could hear that, like, perfect. But everything else is screwed up," Vinny Appice said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rauFZHFUTGU&pp=ygURdmlubnkgYXBwaWNlIDIwMjQ%3DThe post Vinny Appice says his hearing is terrible after decades on the road appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Paul Di’Anno says that he and Bruce Dickinson don’t hate each other

The singer Paul Di'Anno was the vocalist of the first two Iron Maiden albums "Iron Maiden" (1980) and "Killers" (1981), but in 1981 he was fired from the band and the former Samson vocalist Bruce Dickinson was invited to join the group. It was a turning point in Maiden's career, since Dickinson's vocal range changed the band's sound and made them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Although many fans imagined that Di'Anno didn't like Dickinson for taking his place, the musician, who recently had the chance to see Bruce backstage in a show in Croatia, said in an interview with SDTV (Transcribed by Blabbermouth) that they actually don't hate each other. Paul Di'Anno says that he and Bruce Dickinson don't hate each other "(Our conversation was) private, so I say no more. Everyone thinks that we hated each other, which is bullshit. That's the press for you. But we've known each other, obviously, from when he was in Samson and all that. So, yeah, it's all good." Earlier this year, in an interview with Record Collector, Dickinson talked about Di'Anno. He said: “The first time I saw Maiden was at what was then the Music Machine in Camden. Samson were headlining because our management had bankrolled the gig and said, ‘We want the top slot,’ although we didn’t really deserve it. That became obvious when Maiden came on, because the whole place was rammed.” “I’d heard rumors about how good they were, and I thought I’d better see them. When they came out, I thought, ‘I’ve never seen Deep Purple, but this is what it must have felt like to see Deep Purple in their prime, rocking up a storm.'” Bruce Dickinson continued: “(Paul Di’Anno) he was okay, but he didn’t have a lot of flex to his voice. I thought his voice had come as far as it was going to get. I saw what the rest of the band were capable of straight away, and I remember thinking, ‘Good God, I’d love to front that band.’ And as soon as they finished playing, everybody in the venue left and we were headlining to about three people,” Bruce Dickinson said. Bruce fronted Iron Maiden from 1981 to 1993, when he decided to leave the group to focus on his solo career. He rejoined the band six years later, in 1999 and never left again. He never had a problem in performing songs from the Di’Anno era and also from the time Blaze Bayley replaced him in the 90s. The track “Iron Maiden” is especially one he performs frequently with the band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhre32PeLMI&pp=ygUcaXJvbiBtYWlkZW4gaXJvbiBtYWlkZW4gMTk4MQ%3D%3D The post Paul Di’Anno says that he and Bruce Dickinson don’t hate each other appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

The 2000s album that Geddy Lee said is incredible

The 2000s album that Geddy Lee said is incredible

Rush is certainly one of the most influential bands that mixed Progressive and Hard Rock, being an inspiration for countless groups who followed that path. Fronted by Geddy Lee, who also played bass and keyboards, the band sold an estimated amount of more than 42 million records worldwide and was active for more than three decades until they retired in 2015. So Geddy Lee had the chance to see the evolution of Rock and Roll up-close and in the 2000s he praised the debut album of a new band at the time. The 2000s album that Geddy Lee said is incredible That album was the Fleet Foxes' self-titled debut album released in 2008. He listed that record in an interview with The Quietus in 2012, when he chose some of his favorites of all time. "I love the very approach of Fleet Foxes. They seem to have no desire whatsoever to appear trendy. I know they are genuine in that although, obviously, that soon becomes a trendy stance in itself. I can see a bit of Rush in that dilemma." "But they are simply natural, organic and are so well rooted in folk and rock that they can take both these extremes anywhere they want. This happens a lot on this incredible album which certainly shouldn’t be lumped in an Americana basket. There is so much going on." He continued: "They way they play and beautiful use of harmonies. I couldn’t believe it when I first heard it. But it gave me hope that there will always be something new happening in music, no matter what they say. Everything on this album is old but, when pieced together like this, it is truly groundbreaking," Geddy Lee said. That same year he praised the band in an interview with Terrorizer magazine. He said that he loved the band and thought they were awesome. Lee also noted that they reminded him of Amazing Blondel or one of those bands. At the time it peaked at number 3 on the UK albums chart and 36 on the United States Billboard 200 charts. Fleet Foxes was formed in Seattle, Washington in 2006 and is often described as an Indie Folk group. Until now they have released four studio albums, the most recent one being “Shore” (2020). One of his favorite songs of the band is "Your Protector" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McvrkKnZji8&pp=ygUaZmxlZXQgZm94ZXMgWW91ciBQcm90ZWN0b3I%3D In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 2013 (Transcribed by Rush is a Band), Geddy Lee listed some of his favorite songs of all time. One of them was "Your Protector" by Fleet Foxes, which was "Your Protector" from their self-titled debut album. “I’ve spent so much time listening to this. I’m moved by the unusual melody and harmony structures, the production and the great singing,” Geddy Lee said. The band has had the same the same line-up since 2010. It's formed by Robin Pecknold (Vocals, guitar), Skyler Skjelset (Guitar), Casey Wescott (Keyboards), Christian Wargo (Bass, guitar) and Morgan Henderson (upright bass, guitar). Since 2022, the band's touring drummer is Christopher Icasiano. Their most recent and only live album is "A Very Lonely Solstice", released in 2021.The post The 2000s album that Geddy Lee said is incredible appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
