‘I’m Sorry For Everything’: Mark Zuckerberg Faces Families Harmed By Social Media

During a Wednesday hearing on social media and child exploitation‚ Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) pressed tech entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg to address the families who had been hurt by his and other platforms — and the Meta CEO obliged. Zuckerberg faced a number of tough questions from Hawley and others about child safety as it related to social media platforms — and what those platforms should have done in the past and could do in the future to ensure the safety of younger users. WATCH: WOW. @HawleyMO pushed Mark Zuckerberg to stand up and apologize to families who’ve lost children to causes linked to social media‚ sitting behind him in the hearing. Zuckerberg stood up and addressed them. pic.twitter.com/zuOGAr2vX3 — Jay O'Brien (@jayobtv) January 31‚ 2024 Hawley pressed Zuckerberg on the fact that families who felt victimized by social media companies often had no recourse‚ since those companies were protected from lawsuits by their designation as platforms for public speech rather than as publishers who would have a greater responsibility to police what was posted. “Don’t you think they deserve some compensation for what your platform has done? Help with counseling services. Help with dealing with the issues that your services cause?” Hawley asked. “Our job is to make sure that we build tools to help keep people safe‚” Zuckerberg protested. “Are you going to compensate them?” Hawley asked again. “Senator‚ our job and what we take seriously is making sure that we build industry leading tools to find harmful —” Zuckerberg tried once more. “To make money‚” Hawley said. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Toward the end of their exchange‚ Hawley told the Facebook creator that he owed an apology to the families who had been harmed by his product — and Zuckerberg complied. “I’m sorry for everything you’ve all gone through. Nobody should have to go through what your families have suffered‚” he said. “This is why we have invested so much and are going to continue industry leading efforts to make sure that no one has to go through the types of things your families have suffered.” Mary Rodee‚ one of the parents in the gallery‚ told The Hill that she was not impressed by Zuckerberg’s apology. “If he really wants to apologize to me then answer any of my letters or contacts from any attorneys or anybody else the whole time since my kid died three years ago‚” she said‚ noting that her son had died by suicide at the age of 15 after someone used explicit photos to extort money from him via Facebook Messenger. “In that very short time‚ he panicked. He was an impulsive 15-year-old. He felt totally trapped and he killed himself.”

New Group Seeks To Recruit States To Fight Chinese Communist Influence: ‘It Must End’

State Armor‚ a group dedicated to fighting national security threats on the state level‚ announced its launch on Wednesday. The group‚ founded and run by Michael Lucci‚ seeks to educate state lawmakers and push legislation designed to combat Chinese Communist influence operations and threats from other hostile governments. “States are now on the front lines against foreign adversaries. In fact‚ for years states have been targeted by well-resourced‚ technologically sophisticated foreign adversaries‚ particularly communist China‚” Lucci said in a statement. “The Chinese Communist Party is engaged in a broad effort to supplant the United States so it can rewrite global norms according to its authoritarian model. To achieve its goals‚ the CCP aggressively pursues a strategy to gain economic leverage over state and local governments‚ to make states dependent on their technologies‚ and to suppress the First Amendment-protected speech of Chinese dissidents within America.” “China’s communist government is already succeeding in targeting U.S. critical infrastructure and is insinuating itself in the fabric of American society — our economy‚ even our children’s schools — for leverage it may one day use. They harass and intimidate Chinese dissidents and Chinese Americans in our own free country. It must end‚” he said. State Armor has broken combatting the threat from China into four parts: protecting critical infrastructure‚ creating and protecting supply chains‚ stopping influence operations‚ and preparing for armed conflict in the Pacific – a growing possibility as China threatens Taiwan. China has made recent aggressive overtures toward Taiwan‚ which Beijing claims is part of China. The threats against Taiwan‚ the world’s leading producer of semiconductors‚ have complicated China’s relationship with the United States‚ which uses advanced Taiwanese semiconductors in many of its military weaponry. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Lucci’s initiative has found support among top lawmakers and national security experts. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI)‚ the chairman of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party‚ praised State Armor in a statement. “From CCP-affiliated purchases of agricultural land to efforts by the party to influence state and local politics‚ states are on the front lines of our New Cold War with the Chinese Communist Party. We may call this a ‘strategic competition‚’ but this is not a polite tennis match. The most fundamental human rights and freedoms are at stake. I commend State Armor for acting with a sense of urgency to expose the CCP’s nefarious networks across our states and equip local lawmakers with the tools to fight this New Cold War‚” Gallagher said.

Candace Cameron Bure Shares Exciting Family News

Candace Cameron Bure shared exciting family news about her son‚ Lev Bure‚ getting married as she celebrated the new union and her faith. The 47-year-old actress posted several beautiful pictures from the wedding day festivities over the weekend to Instagram on Tuesday. “I present to you‚ Mr. and Mrs. Lev Bure‚” Bure captioned her post. “Words cannot express the joy we have felt this weekend celebrating the marriage of our son and his bride Elliott. We gained a beautiful daughter and a wonderful family to do life with.” “I have an overwhelming sense of love‚ joy‚ peace and contentment thanks to God’s blessing of family and friendship‚” she added. “My heart is so full. I’m grateful for our generational blessing of long lasting Christ-centered marriages; to have a legacy of great-grandparents and grandparents who have shown us the way.”   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Candace Cameron Bure (@candacecbure) “And now‚ being the example for our children and their children to come‚” Bure continued. “If this isn’t a blessing‚ I don’t know what is. What a celebration it was! The Holy Spirit was present‚ the gospel was preached and love filled the air. Covenant vows were made and hearts watching were reminded of theirs long ago.” She closed out her post by calling it a “glorious” day as she congratulated the newlyweds. Lots of congratulatory messages filled the comments portion of her post with sweet words from celebrities and fellow stars of the Great American Family Network (GAF)‚ where Bure develops‚ produces‚ and stars in faith-based movies. The former “Full House” star recently talked about her work on the network and said their goal is to honor “faith‚ family‚ and country” in film — something she said was often missing. “I think we want to create an oasis in a cultural desert‚” Bure told Fox News. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Speaking to the Wall Street Journal‚ the “Fuller House” star previously opened up about her decision to leave Hallmark and join GAF after Hallmark’s programming and advertising started involving LGBTQ-themed stories. “I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment‚” the superstar actress said‚ noting that Hallmark had essentially become “a completely different network” than when she signed on due to a “change of leadership.”

Biden Mocked For Bizarre Exchange About Mental Health … With Elmo

President Joe Biden prompted a string of mocking replies when he engaged in a discussion about mental health and emotional well-being with the “Sesame Street” muppet character Elmo. Elmo started the exchange by “checking in” on X‚ asking how everyone was doing — and then followed up with a promise to do so again in the future: “Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon‚ friends! Elmo loves you.” Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Report Unveils Audio Of Staffer Warning Georgia Prosecutor Of Federal Money Being Misspent Ahead Of Firing

In newly published audio‚ an employee warned Georgia‘s Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in November 2021 about the potential misuse of federal funds just weeks before the worker was fired. The staffer‚ Amanda Timpson‚ can be heard in roughly two minutes of a longer conversation published by the Washington Free Beacon on Wednesday telling Willis about a clash with her manager‚ Michael Cuffee‚ about his alleged plans to do “impossible” things with grant money. Timpson suggested Cuffee took her off projects because she “questioned” him about money allocated for a gang prevention initiative‚ and she feared retaliation because Cuffee allegedly claimed Willis told him “everything.” BREAKING: @FreeBeacon has obtained audio of a whistleblower privately warning Fani Willis in 2021 that her top aide was trying to misuse federal funds. Willis did not dispute the allegations. 56 days later‚ Willis fired the whistleblower and perp walked her out of the office. pic.twitter.com/YEkKIB2L5f — Andrew Kerr (@AndrewKerrNC) January 31‚ 2024 Willis told Timpson she respected her “assessment‚” noting that she was not saying it was “wrong.” The prosecutor also said she was “sorry that you felt that way” in regard to an apparent intimidation tactic and expressed that multiple supervisors had “failed” her. The district attorney fired Timpson less than two months later‚ after which Timpson began taking legal action against Willis and her office — including a whistleblower complaint that alleged wrongful termination. A spokesperson for Willis has said an “inadequate” performance led to the firing. Although the Free Beacon said that neither Willis nor her office responded to a request for comment‚ Cuffee reportedly told the news outlet that he proposed taking money from a different fund to pay for computers. Cuffee‚ who noted he left the DA’s office in December 2021 for “personal” reasons‚ decried what he said was a “money grab for Timpson.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Willis is now leading a racketeering and election interference case against former President Donald Trump and others. The defendants have pleaded not guilty‚ and the trial against the former president is slated to begin during the heart of the 2024 election cycle in which he seeks another term in the White House. The prosecutor‚ who is a Democrat‚ is facing controversy over allegations that she got involved in an inappropriate relationship with Nathan Wade‚ the special prosecutor she hired to manage the RICO case‚ and misspent taxpayer dollars on lavish trips with him. Timpson told the Free Beacon that she can see a “pattern” between the Wade matter and her own. “Ethical violations‚ abuse of power‚ and the misuse of county‚ state‚ and federal funds‚” she said.

Oregon‚ First State To Decriminalize Drug Use‚ Declares State Of Emergency In Portland Over Fentanyl

The Democrat governor of Oregon — the first state in the nation to decriminalize drug use in 2020—  has declared a 90-day state of emergency in Portland because of the magnitude of the fentanyl problem there. Governor Tina Kotek‚ Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson‚ and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler each declared an emergency. “Development of a system to efficiently track and coordinate existing resources to assist people impacted by fentanyl use should be completed in not more than 90 days‚” Kotek wrote in her declaration‚ adding: A command center will be stood up in the central city where state‚ county and city employees will convene to coordinate strategies and response efforts. The Command Center will serve to refocus existing resources. It will also share and publicly report data on the impacts of fentanyl in downtown‚ use data to identify and respond to acute needs and gaps in service‚ identify any specific resources necessary to address gaps‚ and establish a system to coordinate that can be sustained beyond the 90-day startup period.  Oregon passed Measure 110 in 2020. “We’ve had three years of this law that has not delivered on the promise that voters thought they were getting‚” Washington County district attorney Kevin Barton stated. According to CBS News‚ overdoses in the state have continued to rise since 2020. “This is a crisis that has been developing for decades‚” Haven Wheelock‚ the harm reduction manager of the medical and youth care nonprofit center Outside In‚ stated. “And if this is what it’s going to take to get the attention and the care and the funding and the coordination that this tragic issue deserves‚ then I’m going to remain hopeful about that.” Jesse Cornett‚ the policy director for the recovery organization Oregon Recovers‚ said‚ “If you talk to any police officer in the metro area‚ in Portland specifically‚ they don’t even have anywhere to take anyone that’s in the crisis right now. So there are some immediate first steps including a sobering center that should be taken.”

Our Favorite Entertainment Stories Of January 2024

The new year started out with a bang from Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro and rapper Tom MacDonald blowing up the music industry after topping the charts with their rap collaboration “Facts” to news about the apocalyptic movie “Homestead” dropping from the studio behind “Sound of Freedom‚” and more. Shapiro recently teamed up with the Canadian wrestler-turned-rapper in a track that takes a swipe at the insanity of things in our culture like gender identity and defunding the police‚ as previously reported. “As a longtime devotee of rap‚ becoming a rapper was the natural next step in my career trajectory‚” Shapiro said in a press release from MacDonald. “So‚ when Tom asked if I wanted to collaborate on a song‚ I leapt at the chance.” “This was the moment I spent 20 years of classical violin training preparing for‚” he added. “For those who don’t appreciate my artistic stylings‚ all I can say is that they didn’t appreciate Bach properly in his own time‚ either.”  Photo credit: Nova Rockafeller MacDonald said after releasing “Facts‚ “I like to do things nobody else can do. Not everybody can get Ben Shapiro on a track. For someone who had never recorded a rap song before‚ he got in the studio and nailed it. We’ve both criticized the status quo of hip-hop‚ so it made sense. There is a good intention at the heart of ‘Facts.’ There is light.” The music video dropped on Friday morning and by mid-day‚ “Facts” was generating headlines‚ not only for topping the hip-hop/rap chart‚ beating out the likes of Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion‚ but then scoring the number one song in the country on the iTunes chart. Minaj even caught word of Shapiro’s score on the rap and overall iTunes chart and congratulated the host of “The Ben Shapiro Show.” And reactions to the music video might have been even better than the track itself‚ with Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles being at the top of that list. Shortly after “Facts” dropped‚ Knowles posted his blind reaction to the music video as he shared that he was totally unaware that the video was happening‚ asking if “this is real” or AI (artificial intelligence). Reactions from other social media influencers can be seen here and here. “Homestead” Earlier this month‚ the studio behind the sleeper hit of the summer “Sound of Freedom” and the popular faith-based television series “The Chosen”–dropped an incredible trailer for its apocalyptic movie “Homestead” which will later transition into a TV series. The post-apocalyptic family survival drama from Angel Studios is based on the best-selling book series ‘Black Autumn‚’ by Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross. Angel Studios. IMDB. “A string of attacks and collapses drives troubled Green Beret Jeff Kirkham to take a job as head of security for a wealthy doomsday prepper‚ Jason Ross. Ross has built an elaborate permaculture compound for friends and family‚” a description of the movie read. “As the fabric of America goes to pieces‚ a few dozen families scramble to ‘The Homestead’ in a last-ditch effort to survive.” “They quickly discover that Ross’ elaborate plans will not protect them‚” the description added. “Outside the gates‚ desperate neighbors‚ criminals‚ and opportunistic rivals look to The Homestead’s resources as a treasure trove. Inside‚ the community divides into factions: military versus civilian‚ compassionate versus practical‚ spiritual versus rational. These groups clash over every fatality‚ every demand of survival‚ and over the strange prophecies of Jeff’s adopted daughter.” “Eventually‚ the gentle rhythms of the land permeate all‚ and a spirit of unity begins to overtake the community‚” it continued. “As they cultivate the plants‚ animals‚ and the soil‚ and as they face looming destruction‚ their modern squabbles give way to ancient‚ forgotten truths.” The teaser trailer gave viewers a sneak peak of what they could expect‚ with a voiceover near the end of the clip stating‚ “Everyone Wants To Know How The World Ended…This is the story of how it began again.” Actor Jesse Hutch‚ who plays Evan Lee an “ex Green Beret‚ who is part of the main security detail brought in to protect a 300 acre homestead‚” shared a bit more information recently on social media about the film and training for the role. “Film moves quickly‚” Hutch captioned his post. “Every opportunity I had was created by a fantastic team who cared about the story. We trained on the weekends with Actual Green Berets and Marines.” “I consult on the phone with active duty military‚” he added. “I train physically 6 days a week. We have an awesome writing team. I can’t live 30 years of service in 1 feature film… but you’re damn right I’m gonna give it a shot. This will be released this year in 2024. The crew and cast are fantastic people. Keep your eyes open.” The Golden Globes The 81st Golden Globes took place earlier this month and the elite audience in the room and those watching at home made it crystal clear they want comedian Ricky Gervais back as the host given the responses to comedian Jim Gaffigan’s pedophile joke at the annual award show. During the 2024 show‚ Gaffigan took the stage as one of the presenters and got more cheers and applause for his jokes than the comedian picked to host the 2024 show‚ Jo Koy‚ whose performance was widely panned by all. “This is so exciting for me‚” the 57-year-old actor/comedian said as a presenter at the annual ceremony for first-ever Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. “The Golden Globes – I can’t even believe I’m in the entertainment industry. I can’t.” “You know‚ it’s so unlikely‚” he added. “I’m from a small town in Indiana. I’m not a pedophile. I don’t know if that’s a new category here‚ but …” Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television is a new category this year! Here to present the award is comedian @JimGaffigan! #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/zU7upoQp4f — Golden Globe Awards (@goldenglobes) January 8‚ 2024 The room of star Hollywood performers roared with laughter at the gag and gave the comedian a round of applause. At home‚ people felt similar‚ with people posting on social media clips of his bit along with clips of Gervais torching Hollywood four years earlier at the 2020 Golden Globes– while slamming Koy’s jokes as “reductive” and “cheap.” Koy later hit back at the criticism of his jabs about “Oppenheimer‚” “Barbie” and Taylor Swift and labeled celebrities who didn’t like his performance as “a lot of marshmallows. They’re delicious‚ but g**d***‚ they’re soft‚” Koy said‚ per Variety. “I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it‚ but g**d***‚ can we f***ing laugh at ourselves?” Gervais famously torched Hollywood over its “pedophile movies” and cracked a joke about convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein while hosting the show in 2020. Entertainment And The NFL The NFL ratings have been through the roof in January‚ with the AFC and NFC Championship games over the weekend giving CBS and Fox more than 50 million viewers for each‚ the first time that’s happened in 10 years.  And one NFL player who’s reminded fans just how much fun football can be to watch is Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce whose viral shirtless antics at the Bills-Chiefs AFC Divisional playoff game sparked hilarious memes and led headlines for more than a week. It even got a bakery in Kansas City to create the shirtless Kelce cookie cake that quickly sold out‚ a first for the seven-year-old shop. The woman at Eileen's Colossal Cookies who designed the Jason Kelce cookie (with the chest hair and beyond) that's gone viral. https://t.co/HxYBMOUttD pic.twitter.com/BJ0aRyct8i — Tammy Ljungblad (@kctammy2009) January 26‚ 2024 It all started after Kelce showed up in Buffalo to cheer on his brother Travis Kelce and watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Bills. To say Jason stole the show would be putting it mildly–even with superstar singer Taylor Swift in the suite to cheer on boyfriend Travis.  As Kelce was watching the game with his wife Kylie Kelce‚ his excitement over his brother’s touchdown led to him taking off his shirt in the Highmark Stadium box suite and jumping out into the stands with the fans. During the Kelce brothers’ “New Heights” podcast‚ Jason admitted from the minute he got into the suite he wanted to get out of the box and into the stands with the Buffalo fans and “take everything off‚” calling the experience from start to finish at the game “electric.” “I feel like taking your shirt off is a Buffalo Bills thing‚” Jason said as video of him drinking liquor shots out of a bowling ball at a tailgate party before the game and crushing beers in the stands played in the background.  “I wanted to take my shirt off at the tailgate‚” he added. “Then when I entered the box I noticed … I could jump out of this box and I’ll be outside and if I take my shirt off then I’m outside part of the Buffalo Bills pageantry.” Jason also admitted that he didn’t think his wife “was happy about it.” And while Kylie wasn’t thrilled‚ Travis revealed that the “Blank Space” hitmaker loved his brother’s shirtless fun and said‚ “Tay said she absolutely loved you.” During an interview on “Good Morning America‚” Kylie later shared her thoughts about her husband’s shirtless antics that went viral and said “the first time he jumped out of the suite‚ I was‚ you know what‚ go ahead. That’s my husband!” “And then the second and third time he did it‚ I was like‚ I’m gonna need you to get back in because the poor cops that are out front trying to keep the chaos at a minimum‚ are‚ you’re making their jobs harder‚” she added. “So at first‚ I was all for it. And then I had to try and reel him back in.” Jeremy Renner‚ One Year Later: “It’s A Powerful Love And It’s Overwhelming.” Jeremy Renner reflecting on if he’s changed at all a year after his near-fatal snow plow accident will close off our favorite entertainment stories of the month‚ ending on an inspirational note. Valerie Macon/AFP via Getty Images In a video posted recently on Instagram‚ the 53-year-old actor responded to the question about how he has changed since he suffered life-threatening injuries on January 1‚ 2023‚ near his home in Nevada. “I don’t think that the core of any of who I am has changed at all‚” Renner said. “I don’t even think the principles of‚ like‚ what I’ve always wanted in my life have changed at all.” “So the only thing that’s really shifted‚ to be honest‚ for me‚ which is difficult‚ is accepting being seen and witnessed for who I am as a man‚ as a father‚ as a brother‚” he added. “It’s a powerful love and it’s overwhelming.” “I mean‚ that’s the biggest thing that I’ve changed‚” Renner continued. “I personally shifted‚ so I had to learn to receive a lot of goodness‚ man … a goodness I didn’t believe existed in the world‚ brother. It’s f***ing special to know that you’re not going to have a bad day for the rest of your life.” The Marvel star recently celebrated being able to return to the set of his show “Mayor of Kingstown” a year after the accident‚ but admitted he’s “a little bit scared‚” People magazine reported. “I don’t know if I’m looking forward to it‚” Renner said. “Again‚ I try to just do everything kind of step by step here. That’s one foot in front of the other one.” “Then you’re walking…I think I’m excited when I’m there and I get in a rhythm there‚” he added. “I’m excited about the character and‚ of course‚ all the people involved and all that in the storyline‚ but for me‚ I’m just tentative of confidence in work.” The actor has undergone extensive therapy over the last year as part of his recovery after his body was nearly crushed under a 14‚300-pound snowcat‚ resulting in more than 30 broken bones. The “Avengers” star has kept fans up to date on social media while documenting his incredible journey to recovery during the past year. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILY WIRE APP

Megyn Kelly Suggests E. Jean Carroll’s Actions Could Swing Election

In a recent turn of events‚ television personality Megyn Kelly has raised the possibility that E. Jean Carroll’s behavior following her defamation lawsuit victory could inadvertently benefit former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election. The case‚ which concluded with Carroll being awarded over $83 million‚ has sparked a wide array of reactions across the political spectrum. Carroll’s appearance on a popular talk show‚ where she discussed plans for the awarded money‚ including a shopping spree and creating a fund for women allegedly assaulted by Trump‚ has been met with criticism. Her remarks‚ particularly about using the money on “something Donald Trump hates‚” have been perceived by some as distasteful and vindictive. Megyn Kelly says E. Jean Carroll is a “Kook” who made up a story about Trump. https://t.co/Ozc6ooZy9S — Juanita Broaddrick (@atensnut) January 30‚ 2024 The response to Carroll’s comments has not been universally positive‚ with many expressing discomfort at the celebratory tone taken when discussing such serious matters. This reaction has led some to believe that the public’s perception of the situation may shift sympathy towards Trump‚ potentially influencing voter sentiment. Megyn Kelly‚ known for her sharp analysis‚ took to social media to express her view that Carroll’s actions and comments could play right into Trump’s hands. She suggested that the public display of Carroll’s intentions regarding the monetary award might alienate voters who are tired of what they see as political theatrics. This is the kind of clip that could win Trump the election. https://t.co/1tLsBAcWYO — Megyn Kelly (@megynkelly) January 30‚ 2024 Critics of the lawsuit’s outcome‚ including media critic Joe Concha‚ have echoed similar sentiments‚ arguing that the verdict and subsequent behavior by Carroll could be seen as a miscarriage of justice by the general populace. This perspective holds that regular Americans might find the entire situation repugnant‚ further complicating the already polarized political climate. The implications of Carroll’s post-verdict conduct are yet to be fully realized‚ but the suggestion that it could influence the electoral landscape is a testament to the unpredictable nature of public opinion. With the election on the horizon‚ all eyes will be on how this narrative develops and whether it will indeed have the electoral impact some are predicting. As the story unfolds‚ it serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between legal battles‚ media coverage‚ and political outcomes. Whether or not Carroll’s actions will sway voters in Trump’s favor remains to be seen‚ but the conversation around it underscores the deep divisions and heightened emotions that characterize the current political environment.
