Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA) called on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to step down during a Monday hearing following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The Democratic Congressman from California’s 17th Congressional district, which encompasses San Jose, pointed out during Cheatle’s testimony that she had lost the trust of a large swath of the American public after Trump was shot at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. “I don’t think this is partisan. If you have an assassination attempt on a president, a former president, or a candidate, you need to resign,” Khanna charged. “Would you agree that this is the most serious security lapse since President Reagan was shot in 1981,” Khanna asked Cheatle, who responded, “Yes sir, I would.” “Do you know what Stuart Knight did?” Khanna asked, referencing the Director of the Secret Service at the time of the attempted assassination of Reagan. Cheatle responded, “he remained on duty,” before being corrected by Khanna, who fired back, “he resigned.” Cheatle stated multiple times, however, that she would maintain her post as the Director of the Secret Service, drawing ire from Khanna. “I will remain on, and be responsible to the agency, to this committee, to the former president, and the American public,” she said. “Do you really believe, given how divided the country is, that your service in this role is the best for the nation?” Khanna asked. “We’ve got to have agencies in this country that transcend politics, that have the confidence of Democrats, Republicans.” “I believe, Director Cheatle, that you should resign,” Khanna added. Khanna is not the only Democrat, however, who has called for Cheatle’s resignation. Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) verbally sparred with Cheatle, who gave a noncommittal response when Moskowitz asked whether or not she was prepared to fire Secret Service personnel. “The reason why your name is going to be the person who’s held accountable, and the reason why members of this committee are calling for resignation — and I join in that — or for the president to fire you, is because you’re saying there’s going to be accountability, but you can’t commit that people are going to get fired,” Moskowitz stated. 

The sentiment among Democrats that Vice President Kamala Harris would fare better in the election against former President Donald Trump than President Joe Biden is not borne out by the data, NBC News National Political Correspondent Steve Kornacki said on Monday. Kornacki explained how an average of polls over the past few weeks showed Trump — the 2024 GOP presidential nominee — with 47% and Harris with 46% in a head-to-head matchup while the same polls showed it was 47% for Trump and 45% for Biden. “I think it underscores for Democrats, they view this move as something that’s going to improve their chances in the general election. That is based more on hope than it is on the numbers right now,” Kornacki said. Harris got endorsed by Biden and is, at the moment, the only declared candidate running for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. She has a great deal of support from fellow Democrats, but not everyone has backed her nascent campaign so far. Kornacki said there is not “much of a difference” when it comes to public opinion. Biden had “very bad numbers” with 36% favorable and 57% unfavorable in an average of polls over the last month, while Harris got 38% favorable and 52% unfavorable. But we don’t know. She has not really been tested,” Kornacki said. “Her name never got to a primary ballot in 2020. She dropped out a couple of months before that,” he went on. “So, see how it goes over. Democrats hope these numbers will improve. There’s also a possibility they don’t. There’s also a possibility this rollout does not go well.”

Former President Donald Trump reportedly axed a proposal from independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to trade a job in his potential second administration for an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race. The Washington Post reported on Monday that Trump and Kennedy met to discuss the possibilities in the days following his July 13th rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the assassination attempt that took place there. According to that report, no consensus was reached — primarily due to concerns over the optics of such an exchange. Kennedy, who has not endorsed Trump and says he plans to continue his campaign for the presidency, did praise the former president for reaching out to him when his own former party wanted nothing to do with him. “All I will say to you is I am willing to talk to anybody from either political party who wants to talk about children’s health and how to end the chronic disease epidemic,” Kennedy said during a Monday interview. “I have a lot of respect for President Trump for reaching out to me. Nobody from the DNC, high or low, has ever reached out to me in 18 months. Instead of anointing a candidate hand-picked by DNC elites, the party should use neutral polling to identify the candidate who can best beat Donald Trump,” Kennedy said. “The delegates should then select a nominee based on this information. If they had done this to begin with, I would not have had to leave the Democratic Party.”
