Mel Gibson’s New Film The Resurrection Of The Christ Finally Has A Release Date, Here’s When
I have been waiting for this for a while.
Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ was so good that it’s only fitting for him to produce a sequel.
Gibson’s new sequel will be called The Resurrection of Christ and will be released in theaters on March 26, 2027.
However, that’s not all.
It will be a two-part film!
AOL provided further details of when the second part will be released:
The long wait is over! Fans have been holding their breath for over two decades since Mel Gibson’s 2004 blockbuster hit theaters. Now, the sequel everyone has talked about is finally locked in, and it’s not just one movie. It’s two.
Titled The Resurrection of the Christ, the project splits into Part One and Part Two, with Lionsgate handling the big-screen rollout. Part One drops on March 26, 2027, which lines up perfectly with Good Friday. Then, 40 days later, Part Two arrives on May 6, 2027, tying into Ascension Day. This clever scheduling nods to the Christian calendar, ramping up the thematic punch.
Remember the original? It followed the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life, pulling in over $610 million worldwide on a modest $30 million budget. It even snagged Oscar nods for makeup, cinematography, and score. Gibson directed that one too, and he’s back in the chair here, co-writing with Randall Wallace.
Development kicked off back in 2016, with talks of focusing on the resurrection. Fast forward through years of script tweaks, and filming started in October 2025 across Italian spots like Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, Matera, and Brindisi. The budget? A hefty $100 million, showing serious commitment from Gibson’s Icon Productions.
Watch Gibson discuss his film with Joe Rogan:
JOE ROGAN: “Do you have a title?”
MEL GIBSON: “Yeah, The Resurrection of the Christ. It’s very ambitious. That’s all I’ll say … It goes from the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle.” pic.twitter.com/7B2jp7VjSY

Mel Gibson spent 7 years writing the sequel to The Passion of the Christ, with help from theologians and historians to ensure biblical/historical accuracy.
Filming began in August 2025 in Italy.

However, there’s a downside to the new film.
Actor Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the first movie, will not be featured as Jesus in the newest movie.
People provided further details on Cavieziel not being selected to play Jesus:
Jim Caviezel will not be returning to his role as Jesus Christ, according to reports.
The actor, 57, starred as Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s blockbuster biblical drama The Passion of the Christ. However, he will not be returning to the role for The Resurrection of the Christ, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.
Monica Bellucci, who portrayed Mary Magdalene in the 2004 epic, will also not be returning as a completely new cast will star in the sequel. Page Six was the first to report the casting updates.
Pre-production is currently underway for The Resurrection of the Christ as new actors are being sourced for the project in Rome, according to the outlet.

The move by Gibson makes sense, as Caviezel has aged by over 20 years since the first movie was released.
How does that sound?
