Spain’s Disinfo Crackdown Censorship Trap, Sanchez Faces Backlash

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Spain is yet another EU country that is coming up with legislative measures which officials say are necessary to combat “disinformation” both on social sites and in traditional media. Such a plan, consisting of 31 points, has been approved by Spain’s Council of Ministers (the main government body), but the opposition is already rejecting it as a ploy to censor free speech. “More transparency and accountability” is how Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez would like the measures, which will be debated in parliament, to be perceived. The debate should be interesting, not least considering that the minority government has come up with the proposal supposedly to tackle disinformation – but in the wake of corruption allegations involving the prime minister’s wife. The accusations leveled at Begona Gomez earlier in the year led to an inquiry, and now the government is determined to push new measures through the parliament that would stop “the spread of false news.” And this is particular – and coincidentally? – applies to such news when they concern “public institutions and individuals.” It seems pretty transparent what prompted all this, but that’s not what Sanchez says he has in mind when he talks about transparency: the prime minister frames the plan as needed to protect both accurate information, and democracy. And not only that, but make that democracy “freer and cleaner” as the justice minister in the left-wing coalition government, Felix Bolanos, chose to put it. And he may or may not be the only one who knows what that is supposed to mean. Meanwhile, the key opposition, right-wing People’s Party said it would vote against the proposal, as they believe the entire endeavor has to do with ushering in more censorship. The plan which Bolanos stated should “restore confidence” in the media can also be read as putting some not-so-subtle pressure on them. Amendments to the penal code are among the proposed provisions, but also a closer government look into media outlet’s finances – referred to as yet more transparency, this time around revenues. Reports say that to achieve all this, the Spanish government wants to set up “a special commission to combat disinformation” and, speaking of revenues, another measure is to “restrict the operation of corporate advertising in the media.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Joe Biden, 20 Years Ago, Blocked the Potential First Black Female on the Supreme Court

Joe Biden, 20 Years Ago, Blocked the Potential First Black Female on the Supreme Court

President Joe Biden, to fill a Supreme Court vacancy, said he had but one fixed criterion. The nominee must be a black female. On the first day of Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing, Sunny Hostin, co-host of ABC’s “The View,” tweeted: “Been crying with pride all day watching Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson breaking this ceiling. Never thought I would feel so very emotional. But I’m all in my feelings.” California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown did not set out to become the first black female nominated to the United States Supreme Court. But had it not been for then-Sen. Joe Biden standing in her way 20 years ago, Brown might well have been on the road to “breaking this ceiling.” Brown, the daughter and granddaughter of sharecroppers, was born in Alabama during Jim Crow. As a single mom, she worked her way through college and law school, graduating from UCLA law school in 1977. Over the next 20 years, she worked in the criminal and civil divisions as California deputy attorney general; became the general counsel for the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency; served as a law professor; and practiced law in private practice. In 1994, California Republican Gov. Pete Wilson appointed her to the California Court of Appeals and two years later to the California Supreme Court. In California, appointees to its Supreme Court must run for reelection. Despite being appointed by a Republican and her reputation as a conservative jurist, she retained her position with 76% of the vote, a higher percentage than any of the other appointees who ran that year. Brown wrote more majority opinions than any other justice of that court. In 2003, President George W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from which more justices go on the Supreme Court than any other circuit. Even though Brown had majority support in the Senate, Sen. Biden filibustered her nomination. According to columnist Robert Novak, Biden’s obstruction represented “the first full-scale effort in American history to prevent a president from picking the federal judges he wants.” Bush renominated her and she was finally confirmed, with Biden again opposing her confirmation. Months later, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor retired, and Brown was reportedly on the short list to replace her. But Biden appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and threatened to again filibuster a Brown nomination. Bush backed down. Consider this exchange during Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing: Sen. Lindsey Graham: Do you know Janice Rogers Brown? JACKSON: Yes, I do know her. GRAHAM: How do you know her? JACKSON: She was a judge on the court that I now serve. ...I know of her, yes. GRAHAM: What do you know of her? What’s her reputation? JACKSON: I know that she’s a very well-respected judge on my circuit. GRAHAM: OK. And in terms of family issues, the daughter and granddaughter of sharecroppers, she was raised in Alabama under Jim Crow. Despite this adversity, she threw herself into law school as a single working mother. That’s pretty impressive, isn’t it? JACKSON: Yes, Senator. GRAHAM: Your background is very impressive. You seem to have a great family. If family mattered, we would not have done to her what was done to her here in the United States Senate. Do you realize that she was filibustered for two years when she was appointed to the D.C. Circuit? JACKSON: I didn’t know that. GRAHAM: Did you know that Joe Biden actively filibustered Janice Rogers Brown? JACKSON: I did not know that. GRAHAM: Did you know that he told ‘Face the Nation,’ if Bush nominates her for the Supreme Court, ‘I can assure you that would be a very, very, very difficult fight and she probably would be filibustered.’ Is that news to you too? JACKSON: Yes. GRAHAM: OK. Now that you know that, how do you feel about it? JACKSON: Senator, I can’t speak to something that I just learned two seconds ago in your conversation to with me.” Were it not for Biden, who now considers the filibuster “a relic of the Jim Crow era,” Hostin could have been “crying with pride” 20 years ago.

Apple Watch Series 10 buyers are already complaining that Jet Black scratches easily

What's the price of beauty? Apple just released the Apple Watch Series 10 this past Friday with a new Jet Black finish. Many customers instantly remembered the good old days of the iPhone 7 in a similar colorway. However, if you were one of the people who bought the iPhone in that finish, you know that it was very prone to grease buildup and, even worse, scratching. After all these years, Apple probably learned how to improve the manufacturing process of that finish so the Apple Watch wouldn't scratch as easily as the iPhone did eight years ago, right? Well, according to some Redditors, Jet Black still scratches very easily on the Apple Watch Series 10. In several shared images, it's possible to see the Jet Black body full of abrasions, which was pretty common with the iPhone 7. However, it doesn't seem to stop Apple customers. The thread creator wrote: "I hope it's visible. I would say it's very hard to notice, to be honest. I still love the watch and definitely will buy it." https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleWatch/comments/1flikum/apple_watch_s10_jet_black_scratches_easily Another user wrote, " I noticed that, too. Only four hours out of the box, no contact between the body and anything other than my clean fingers. I can see two scratches already. I knew what I was getting into, though." On the thread, one Redditor pointed out that scratches aren't exclusive to this new Apple Watch Series 10 in Jet Black: "I’ve never owned an Apple Watch that didn’t scratch. I’ve even owned the ceramic one too. I rock climb with them, so they all got minor cosmetic damage to some degree despite the ruggedness." In another discussion thread, a Redditor pointed out that even the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 in a Black finish isn't scratch-proof. They posted: "I brushed up against an aluminum /metal door handle while checking my mail once. This is the result." While Apple Watches are pretty tough, they aren't scratch-proof. This is why many customers suggest buying a bezel protector. Another option, of course, is getting AppleCare+, which lets you replace your model for a fee. That said, if you're on the verge of buying the new Apple Watch Series 10 in Jet Black, just make sure you're fine with the possible infinite abrasions it will have, even if you're extra careful. Gods of Sacrifice: Physical Impairments in Norse Myth and Society

In Norse mythology, the themes of impairment and sacrifice were imbued with deep, arcane meaning, illuminating the relationship between human existence and the divine. The Norse gods, formidable and wise, were not exempt from suffering and loss; even the celestial realm was bound by the necessity of braving trials for the salvation of cosmic balance. Mirrored in the lives of the Norse people, embracing hardship for a prosperous community was divinely favored. Within this mythic worldview, impairments and the act of sacrifice were not purely challenges to be overcome but revered as essential elements of honor, growth, and the enduring dance between destiny and self-determination. Myself to Myself: Offerings at the Well Beneath the roots of the sacred world tree Yggdrasil three wells could be found. One of the three, Mimisbrunnr, was the most enigmatic of them all, gifting great wisdom to whoever drank from it. Mimir, The Rememberer and guardian of memories, sipped its livening waters since the beginning of time. He was wise beyond all measure, the only one worthy of possessing such an empowering well. Still, a day came when a man of age, tall and imposing, with a long grey beard, cloaked in a dark blue hood traveled through the perilous land of giants to meet with Mimir in hopes of obtaining this wisdom.
