All the New Science Fiction Books Arriving in February!

Book Recommendations new releases All the New Science Fiction Books Arriving in February! Parallel earths‚ plastic women and more in this month’s new releases. By Reactor | Published on February 7‚ 2024 icon-comment 0 Share New Share Twitter Facebook Pinterest RSS Feed Here’s the full list of science fiction titles heading your way in February! Keep track of all the new SFF releases here. All title summaries are taken and/or summarized from copy provided by the publisher. Release dates are subject to change. February 6 Beggar’s Sky — Wil McCarthy (Baen) Trillionaire Igbal Renz has constructed a starship capable of making the twenty-year journey to Alpha Centauri. So why is he stopping at barely one-tenth that distance‚ with a cargo of a hundred frozen scientists and diplomats? Rumors abound that Renz Ventures‚ Inc.‚ has made contact with… something. And yet‚ as deadly stealth ships prowl the space lanes and as the corporate space race threatens to devolve into outright warfare‚ the Four Horsemen of space industry are discovering firsthand that even in a limitless and lawless frontier‚ no one can ever be truly self-sufficient. An Angel Called Peterbilt (Ring of Fire – Assiti Shards #5) — Eric Flint‚ Gorg Huff‚ Paula Goodlett (Baen) Michael and Melanie Anderle are hauling a tanker full of oil with their Peterbilt eighteen-wheeler when they’re struck by a temporal irregularity that sends them‚ the truck‚ and their daughter back in time a thousand years. The bubble that transports them also grabs a chemist and her two young children‚ along with half a convenience store in the middle of the United States. They just want to make a decent life for themselves in this new world of the past‚ with their Peterbilt and its oil providing a means of transportation‚ a generator‚ and shelter. But not all the locals are willing to live and let live‚ and when the area shamans decide that this community of temporally displaced persons is a threat to their power‚ the Anderles find out what it’s like to take a Peterbilt to war. George R. R. Martin Presents Wild Cards: Sleeper Straddle (Wild Cards #32) — ed. George R. R. Martin (Bantam) An alien virus ravages the world‚ with effects as random as a hand of cards. Those infected either draw the black queen and die‚ draw an ace and receive superpowers‚ or draw the joker and are bizarrely mutated. Croyd Crenson is the Wild Card’s greatest failure—and its greatest success. Dubbed “The Sleeper‚” he randomly undergoes hibernations that can span days‚ weeks‚ or even months. After each hibernation‚ he awakens with a new appearance and set of powers—sometimes a joker‚ sometimes an ace‚ and sometimes a combination of both—until exhaustion claims him and his next inevitable sleep shuffles the cards anew. Ever since his initial infection in 1946‚ he’s awoken in a singular body—until now. His latest awakening has left him split into six different incarnations‚ each of them a self-contained piece of the original and each with a unique look and ability. One of them‚ at least‚ recognizes this for the disaster that it is‚ and tasks the clever and elusive Tesla—a joker with ace powers—to locate and gather the remaining five versions of himself before sleep claims them again and leaves Croyd permanently fractured. What follows is a journey through Croyd’s long and colorful life‚ through the lens of some who have encountered the world’s most unusual wild carder. And as Tesla delves deeper into the investigation‚ he’ll have to work fast‚ because not every Croyd is as amiable as the first—and they’ll do whatever it takes to survive. Sons of War 4: Soldiers — Nicholas Sansbury Smith‚ Tom Abrahams (Blackstone) In the conclusion to the sweeping saga of postapocalyptic Los Angeles‚ Dominic Salvatore leads the Saints‚ a secret team of elite operatives‚ in a final push to purge the city of its demons. After sending their families into hiding‚ the Saints know that the stakes have never been higher—they will succeed decisively or perish. Broken by the death of his wife‚ Don Antonio Moretti seeks revenge against her killers. He embarks on a body-strewn campaign to crush his last rivals and secure the crown of Los Angeles. Nephew Vinny Moretti tires of the killings and wonders whether his uncle is going too far. Every eye is on the prize. And anyone trying to walk the fence between good and evil will have to pick a side. With either choice‚ hell awaits. February 13 Plastic — Scott Guild (Pantheon) Erin is a plastic girl living in a plastic world. Every day she eats a breakfast of boiled chicken‚ then conveys her articulated body to Tablet Town‚ where she sells other figurines Smartbodies: wearable tech that allows full‚ physical immersion in a virtual world‚ a refuge from real life’s brutal wars‚ oppressive governmental monitoring‚ and omnipresent eco-terrorist insurgency. If you cut her‚ she will not bleed—but she and her fellow figurines can still be cracked or blown apart by gunfire or bombs‚ or crumble away from nuclear fallout. Erin‚ who’s lost her father‚ sister‚ and the love of her life‚ certainly knows plenty about death. An attack at her place of work brings Erin another too-intimate experience‚ but it also brings her Jacob: a blind figurine whom she comforts in the aftermath‚ and with whom she feels an almost instant connection. For the first time in years‚ Erin begins to experience hope—hope that until now she’s only gleaned from watching her favorite TV show‚ the surrealist retro sitcom “Nuclear Family.” Exploring the wild wonders of the virtual reality landscape together‚ it seems that possibly‚ slowly‚ Erin and Jacob may have a chance at healing from their trauma. But then secrets from Erin’s family’s past begin to invade her carefully constructed reality‚ and cracks in the facade she’s constructed around her life threaten to reveal everything vulnerable beneath. The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles (Mossa and Pleiti #2) — Malka Older (Tordotcom Publishing) Mossa has returned to Valdegeld on a missing person’s case‚ for which she’ll once again need Pleiti’s insight. Seventeen students and staff members have disappeared from Valdegeld University―yet no one has noticed. The answers to this case may lie on the moon of Io―Mossa’s home―and the history of Jupiter’s original settlements during humanity’s exodus from Earth. But Pleiti’s faith in her life’s work as a scholar of the past has grown precarious‚ and this new case threatens to further destabilize her dreams for humanity’s future‚ as well as her own. Convergence Problems — Wole Talabi (DAW) In “An Arc of Electric Skin‚” a roadside mechanic seeking justice volunteers to undergo a procedure that will increase the electrical conductivity of his skin by orders of magnitude. In “Blowout‚” a woman races against time and a previously undocumented geological phenomenon to save her brother on the surface of Mars. In “Ganger‚” a young woman trapped in a city run by machines must transfer her consciousness into an artificial body and find a way to give her life purpose. In “Debut‚” Nairobi-based technical support engineer tries to understand what is happening when an AI art system begins malfunctioning in ways that could change the world. The sixteen stories of Convergence Problems‚ which include work published for the first time in this collection‚ rare stories‚ and recently acclaimed work‚ showcase Talabi at his creative best: playful and profound‚ exciting and experimental‚ always interesting. Angolin – C. E. Taylor (CamCat) The Hidden Realm of Angolin has existed in peaceful isolation for centuries‚ but that’s about to change. The enemy across the Abyss has discovered them and is intent on conquest. Lieutenant Dharmen Tate has a great love for his homeland and a greater understanding of its position in the world. When he discovers a plot by fellow officers to join the enemy and overthrow Angolin‚ he and his colleagues spring into action to defend the Hidden Realm from its foes―those without‚ and those within. The ensuing struggle magnifies Angolin’s vulnerability and exposes the collusion of a growing body of its citizens‚ signifying an uncertain and bloody future. February 20 Vangie’s Ghosts — Paul Di Filippo (Blackstone) Three-year-old Vangie is mute and unresponsive. She shows no interest in the people or world around her‚ much to the frustration of her callous foster parents. Little do they know‚ Vangie is otherwise occupied observing “ghosts”—an infinite number of versions of herself‚ in an infinite number of parallel universes. When a tornado hits their trailer and Vangie is severely injured‚ she makes a desperate leap into another timeline where she survives the tornado‚ but her foster parents do not. So begins a life of shuttling through various foster homes‚ cultivating her abilities to seek out alternate timelines‚ and making jumps calculated to better her circumstances in order to avoid the exploitation of adults who seek to harness her powers for their own means. Vangie never communicates with her avatars‚ until one day the “Council”—a group of Vangies—appear to her and warn her of an ominous‚ growing threat in the multiverse: a man they call the Massive. And thus begins an epic conflict‚ spanning millennia and worlds‚ in a brutal effort to control the fate of the multiverse. The Bezzle (Martin Hench #2) — Cory Doctorow (Tor Books) The year is 2006. Martin Hench is at the top of his game as a self-employed forensic accountant‚ a veteran of the long guerrilla war between people who want to hide money‚ and people who want to find it. He spends his downtime on Catalina Island‚ where scenic‚ imported bison wander the bluffs and frozen‚ reheated fast food burgers cost 25$. Wait‚ what? When Marty disrupts a seemingly innocuous scheme during a vacation on Catalina Island‚ he has no idea he’s kicked off a chain of events that will overtake the next decade of his life. Martin has made his most dangerous mistake yet: trespassed into the playgrounds of the ultra-wealthy and spoiled their fun. To them‚ money is a tool‚ a game‚ and a way to keep score‚ and they’ve found their newest mark―California’s Department of Corrections. Secure in the knowledge that they’re living behind far too many firewalls of shell companies and investors ever to be identified‚ they are interested not in the lives they ruin‚ but only in how much money they can extract from the government and the hundreds of thousands of prisoners they have at their mercy. The Oracle — Ari Juels (Talos) Life is comfortable for a prominent‚ if schlubby‚ developer at a New York City blockchain company. That is‚ until FBI Special Agent Diane Duménil seeks his help against a bewildering threat: The Delphians‚ worshippers of the god Apollo‚ have launched a rogue program on a blockchain. It’s offering a crypto bounty to assassinate a European archaeology professor.  The developer brushes off the danger until he learns the next target: Himself.  Mythical antiquity collides with a near-future cyberworld as The Oracle’s unassuming hero and his FBI partner race against time to dismantle the Delphians’ murderous blockchain software. Theirs is a whirlwind tale of oracles ancient and modern‚ vanished antiquities and conjured crypto billions‚ cybercriminals and digital idealists—narrated by a cynical hero normally more concerned with dark chocolate than the consequences of the technologies he’s pioneering. What happens when the crypto ideals of privacy and truth might cost human lives—especially your own? Exit Black — Joe Pitkin (Blackstone) Imperium is the most expensive structure ever created. Once an orbiting laboratory‚ it is now a space hotel for the fantastically wealthy. But as the station preps for its first group of space tourists‚ Dr. Chloe Bonilla‚ Imperium‘s resident biophysicist‚ finds herself questioning whether babysitting a passel of space glampers is worth the distraction from her research. A private rocket delivers a rogues’ gallery of the world’s elite to Imperium: eccentric billionaires‚ callow tech bros‚ a sponsored Instagram influencer‚ and a seemingly saintly philanthropist. However‚ posing among the staff are members of a global terrorist group who call themselves the Reckoners‚ hell bent on upending the economic inequality of twenty-first-century Earth—and they have a bone to pick with these scions of the 1 percent. As the Reckoners take control of Imperium and demand an $8 billion ransom from their wealthy hostages‚ it’s up to Dr. Bonilla to save them‚ and fast. Or the captives will be forced to exit the station—and there’s only one way out. Twice Lived — Joma West (Tordotcom Publishing) There are two Earths. Perfectly ordinary and existing in parallel. There are no doorways between them‚ no way to cross from one world to another. Unless you’re a shifter. Canna and Lily are the same person but they refuse to admit it. Their split psyche has forced them to shift randomly between worlds—between lives and between families—for far longer than they should. But one mind can’t bear this much life. It’ll break under the weight of it all. Soon they’ll experience their final shift and settle at last in one world‚ but how can they prepare both families for the eventuality of them disappearing forever? February 27 Redsight — Meredith Mooring (Solaris) Korinna has simple priorities: stay on the Navitas‚ stay out of trouble‚ and stay alive. She may be a Redseer‚ a blind priestess with the power to manipulate space-time‚ but she is the weakest in her Order. Useless and outcast. Or so she has been raised to believe. As she takes her place as a navigator on an Imperium ship‚ Korinna’s full destiny is revealed to her: blood brimming with magic‚ she is meant to become a weapon of the Imperium‚ and pawn for the Order that raised her. But when the ship is attacked by the notorious pirate Aster Haran‚ Korinna’s world is ripped apart. Aster has a vendetta against the Imperium‚ and an all-consuming‚ dark power that drives her to destroy everything in her path. She understands the world in a way Korinna has never imagined‚ and Korinna is drawn to her against her better judgment. With the Imperium and the justice-seeking warrior Sahar hot on her heels‚ Korinna must choose her side‚ seize her power and fulfil her destiny—or risk imperiling the future of the galaxy‚ and destroying the fabric of space-time itself. Moon of the Turning Leaves — Waubgeshig Rice (William Morrow) For the past twelve years‚ a community of Anishinaabe people have made the Northern Ontario bush their home in the wake of the power failure that brought about societal collapse. Since then they have survived and thrived the way their ancestors once did‚ but their natural food resources are dwindling‚ and the time has come to find a new home. Evan Whitesky volunteers to lead a mission south to explore the possibility of moving back to their original homeland‚ the “land where the birch trees grow by the big water” in the Great Lakes region. Accompanied by five others‚ including his daughter Nangohns‚ an expert archer‚ Evan begins a journey that will take him to where the Anishinaabe were once settled‚ near the devastated city of Gibson‚ a land now being reclaimed by nature. But it isn’t just the wilderness that poses a threat: they encounter other survivors. Those who‚ like the Anishinaabe‚ live in harmony with the land‚ and those who use violence. Soho Press Launches New Horror Imprint Called Hell’s Hundred

News Hell’s Hundred Soho Press Launches New Horror Imprint Called Hell’s Hundred The imprint’s first titles will hit shelves in summer of 2024. By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on February 7‚ 2024 icon-comment 0 Share New Share Twitter Facebook Pinterest RSS Feed Independent publisher Soho Press is launching a new horror imprint called Hell’s Hundred. This is Soho Press’ first new imprint since the launching of Soho Teen in 2012—according to an article in Publisher’s Weekly‚ the decision came after the Soho team received a selection of horror submissions that they were interested in‚ which didn’t match up with what their current imprints represent. The name of the imprint‚ according to a Soho Press statement‚ is inspired by “the once bleak‚ now chic New York City neighborhood of SoHo—formerly known as ‘hell’s hundred acres’ for its grim industrial facades and deadly fires—Hell’s Hundred provides fertile ground for new nightmares to take root.” The first two Hell’s Hundred books—youthjuice by E.K. Sathue and Blood Like Mine by Stuart Neville—come out in June 2024 and August 2024 respectively. Neville’s other books (Blood Like Mine is his tenth for Soho)‚ which are noir mysteries with supernatural elements‚ will also move over to the Hell’s Hundred imprint. Soho promises that Hell’s Hundred will appeal to all. “Both die-hard horror lovers and the horror-curious will find much to savor here‚” a statement from the publisher states. “From grisly and macabre to darkly humorous‚ Hell’s Hundred publishes evocative horror fiction by true genre aficionados‚ revealing profound truths about the most horrifying aspects of the human experience with perfect doses of terror.” You can see Hell’s Hundred’s catalog here. Rosalind Chao Voices New Audiobook for Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem

News The Three-Body Problem Rosalind Chao Voices New Audiobook for Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem The Star Trek actor will also appear in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Cixin Liu’s novel. By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on February 7‚ 2024 icon-comment 0 Share New Share Twitter Facebook Pinterest RSS Feed Rosalind Chao has had a long career; many of us saw her first in the 1990s in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Keiko O’Brien (pictured above). Chao’s career goes beyond Star Trek‚ of course—she was in The Joy Luck Club‚ played Mulan’s mother in the recent live-action envisioning of the Disney tale‚ and was even on two episodes of M*A*S*H*. Chao will also play the character Ye Wenjie in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem‚ an adaptation of Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth trilogy helmed by David Benioff‚ D.B. Weiss‚ and Alexander Woo. And today‚ we found out via The Verge that she’s delving further into that sci-fi world by reading a new audiobook version of Liu’s The Three-Body Problem‚ the first in the aforementioned trilogy.   This isn’t the first audio recording of Three-Body Problem. An audiobook narrated by Luke Daniels came out in 2014‚ and the Macmillan podcast‚ Stories from Among the Stars had a version there that has since been taken down. Those looking to listen to Liu’s first book narrated by Chao will have to wait until February 27‚ 2024. That gives you almost a month‚ however‚ to listen before the Netflix adaptation releases on Netflix on March 21‚ where we can see Chao bring Ye Wenjie to life on screen. Restoring Trust on Public Health Issues After COVID-19 Rests Squarely on Public Health Officials

At this year’s annual World Economic Forum in Davos‚ Switzerland‚ panelists convened to discuss their “Global Risks Report 2024.”   Among the many world problems they decided they needed to solve‚ they identified “misinformation and disinformation” as one of the most severe threats facing the planet in the near term.   Public health officials‚ struggling mightily to conquer the ignorance of the masses for their own good‚ of course‚ were the victims. In the World Economic Forum’s passionate panel discussion on the topic‚ “Liberating Science‚” Naomi Oreskes‚ professor of the history of science at Harvard University‚ acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic vastly amplified the public’s lack of trust. “[T]here has been a deliberate attempt to inflame the public against experts‚ and we definitely saw this during the COVID-19 pandemic‚” she said. Conspicuously‚ the globalist jet-setters didn’t focus on the fact that much of the popular hostility to the public health “experts” during the COVID-19 pandemic was largely attributable to the experts themselves; specifically‚ their profoundly flawed and often contradictory messaging‚ their own inadequate information‚ and the devastating social‚ economic and educational consequences of their lockdown policies.   Here in the U.S.‚ the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been struggling to regain public trust in the aftermath of the pandemic. Recently‚ a major Health Affairs study of a large sample (4‚208 respondents) of American public opinion found that only 42% of those polled reported “a great deal” of trust in the CDC‚ and the reasons for such relatively low trust had more to do with the agency’s reputed scientific expertise and much less to do with its actual performance. The mystery is that CDC has retained as much popular trust as it has after the COVID-19 pandemic. After all‚ then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky confessed to what ordinary folks had long known: “To be frank‚ we are responsible for some pretty dramatic‚ pretty public mistakes—from testing to data to communications.” The list of COVID-related CDC miscommunications‚ missteps‚ and‚ yes‚ “disinformation” is long: Masking was initially ineffective‚ and then it was a crucial necessity; COVID-19 was transmissible from hard surfaces‚ until it wasn’t; natural immunity from infection was ignored‚ and then it contributed to relaxing previous restrictions imposed during the medical emergency. And then‚ there are the vaccines. In December 2020‚ the Food and Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the COVID-19 vaccine. In a news release‚ the FDA stated‚ “At this time‚ data are not available to make a determination about how long the vaccine will provide protection‚ nor is there evidence that the vaccine prevents transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from person to person.” Nevertheless‚ on Jan. 7‚ 2021‚ less than a month later‚ Walensky tweeted: “I’ve never had more faith in the promise of science and the power of hope to get us through this. I urge all Americans to get vaccinated as soon as you’re able‚ wear a mask and stop the spread.” Today‚ I received my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at @MassGeneralNews. I've never had more faith in the promise of science and the power of hope to get us through this. I urge all Americans to get vaccinated as soon as you're able‚ wear a mask‚ and stop the spread. pic.twitter.com/8sEycBxr6U— Rochelle Walensky‚ MD‚ MPH (@RWalensky) January 7‚ 2021 Walensky’s tweet was flatly inconsistent with the FDA’s statement and basic scientific principles of empirical data and fact-based reasoning. And it got worse. President Joe Biden in 2021 claimed—without supporting data—that the pandemic was a “pandemic of the unvaccinated” and proposed an unprecedented set of mostly illegal vaccine mandates. Meanwhile‚ the CDC‚ without collecting the relevant hospital data‚ simply attributed the sharp increases in hospitalizations in 2021 to persons who had not been vaccinated. In fact‚ as analysts from The Heritage Foundation demonstrated by 2022‚ the accumulating data proved that most hospitalized COVID-19 patients were indeed vaccinated. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Current CDC Director Mandy Cohen has been urging people to get a full range of vaccinations against respiratory diseases‚ while emphasizing that “this new COVID vaccine is updated to match the changes in the virus.” Thanksgiving is 2 weeks away — make a plan today to get vaccinated against flu‚ Covid‚ and RSV to protect yourself and your loved ones this holiday season! pic.twitter.com/IowZCkmAW3— Mandy K. Cohen‚ MD‚ MPH (@CDCDirector) November 9‚ 2023 Cohen says COVID-19 vaccination is for everyone “six months and older.” Of course‚ she does mention that the risk/benefit calculations for the coronavirus vis-à-vis the vaccine vary dramatically from persons six months to 60 years and older and vary also with the presence or absence of underlying health conditions.   The tepid public response to her exhortations is a “communications” problem in Cohen’s view‚ and is attributable to a combination of information overload and vaccine hesitancy. “I worry‚” she says‚ “with so much information that were not going to break through with a couple of key points.” The well-documented federal mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis has indeed resulted in a dangerous increase in vaccine hesitancy beyond just COVID-19 vaccines‚ generating a broader skepticism about vaccination against various illnesses‚ some of them serious. Even Dr. Anthony Fauci‚ former medical adviser to Presidents Donald Trump and Biden‚ now concedes that the ill-conceived COVID-19 vaccine mandates could have contributed to this unhealthy growth in general vaccine hesitancy. American citizens deserve to be treated like intelligent and resilient adults. Public health officials should be fully transparent‚ provide the best data-driven information available‚ admit their own fallibility upfront‚ and freely acknowledge their uncertainty about a specific vaccine‚ medication‚ or recommendation. Science should drive policy‚ rather than policy—let alone politics—driving science. The failure of the CDC during the pandemic was attributable not only to a series of inconsistent recommendations and mixed messaging‚ but also to a growing perception among millions of Americans that politics—not science—were influencing its COVID-19 recommendations. It was a perception reinforced by revelations that a powerful teachers union influenced CDC guidance on school reopenings.   Science is not static. By presenting not only demonstrable‚ evidence-based results‚ but also repeatable and certifiable research methods and studies‚ scientists have been open to scrutiny and civil debate to improve collective understanding. With COVID-19‚ unfortunately‚ we witnessed attempts to suppress scientific dissent. Officials at the National Institutes of Health attempted to marginalize prominent epidemiologists who dissented from the prevailing views of federal public health officials on the wisdom of comprehensive social and economic lockdowns. Scientific study‚ properly performed‚ is not in the business of “canceling” dissenters. Rather‚ it invites questioning‚ and it needs debate and continual intellectual investigation as the essential condition for scientific progress. Instead of “here are the facts‚” too often the official data-free response was “because I said so.” Restoring public trust in public health agencies will take time. But the task is nonetheless urgent‚ and it begins with public health officials themselves. Have an opinion about this article? Progressive Black Pastors Misguided on War in Gaza

Some 1‚000 black pastors nationwide are reported to have weighed in to pressure President Joe Biden to force a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. According to one pastor‚ the war “has evoked the kind of deep-seated angst among black people that I have not seen since the civil rights movement.” And per another‚ regarding the Palestinians‚ “we see them as a part of us … They are oppressed people. We are oppressed people.” Indeed‚ in a Gallup poll at the end of November‚ 61% of white adults expressed approval for the Israeli military action taken in Gaza‚ whereas only 30% of “people of color” expressed approval. Unfortunately‚ much of what is driving opinion on this issue among many black Americans is bad‚ confused information. The Hamas terrorist attack in Israel‚ resulting in some 1‚200 deaths‚ targeted Israeli Jews. On Sept. 11‚ 2001‚ our country was attacked‚ resulting in almost 3‚000 deaths. However‚ in tiny Israel‚ with a population of 9.8 million‚ 1‚200 deaths equate to over 40‚000 in our country. Nevertheless‚ despite a far lower relative casualty rate on 9/11‚ our country was in shock and outrage‚ and we went to war in Afghanistan to attack the source. That war resulted in 176‚000 deaths‚ 46‚319 of which were civilians. The death toll in Gaza is now a little over 27‚000. Israelis take no joy in this. But there is no choice. Hamas shields their bodies and infrastructure among civilians‚ even in hospitals. Just as no one questioned our country going after those who attacked our homeland in 2001‚ why should anyone question the justification of Israel going after those who daily threaten their lives and existence? How many of these black pastors who identify with the Palestinians—and say‚ “They are oppressed‚ we are oppressed”—have any idea of the history of the region and the conflict? Oppression means having no choice. Choosing to live in squalor because of a refusal to take responsibility for one’s life is not oppression. These pastors might consider doing some homework and learning that Israel was founded by Jewish immigrants‚ motivated to return to their historic homeland after many‚ many years of oppression and persecution. This came to a peak in the Holocaust when 6 million Jews—40% of all the Jews in the world—were murdered by the German Nazis. Jews returned to their historic homeland‚ worked‚ and built‚ despite ongoing Arab hostility to their settlements. The situation was resolved by the United Nations in 1947. The U.N. voted to partition the area into two states—a Jewish state and an Arab state. The Jews said‚ “Yes.” The Arabs said‚ “No.” And then they attacked. Despite endless attacks and war‚ Israelis have shown what taking responsibility for one’s life means. They built from nothing a modern country that today has a per capita gross domestic product higher than most European nations. Saying no and choosing war‚ as the Palestinians have done‚ is not oppression. It is stupidity and irresponsibility. I would remind readers again that Israel pulled out of the Gaza Strip in 2005. The Palestinians then could have started to build. They were free to do it. Instead‚ they elected Hamas and started more rounds of endless attacks against Israel. The latest and most horrible was what happened Oct. 7. We see now the more than 300 miles of high-tech tunnels in Gaza that have been constructed since Hamas took leadership‚ at a cost of hundreds of millions‚ with the sole objective of attacking Israel. Despite billions in aid‚ resources in Gaza have been focused on eliminating Israel‚ not on improving the quality of life and building a future for Palestinians. I would remind these progressive black clergy of the sad but accurate observation of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir: “Peace will come when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us.” COPYRIGHT 2024 CREATORS.COM The Daily Signal publishes a variety of perspectives. Stop Allowing Noncitizens to Determine Congressional and Presidential Representation

The open border has enabled the Left to amass more political power. Democratic-controlled states have gained congressional seats by welcoming and harboring illegal aliens. As president‚ Donald Trump tried to halt this wrongdoing by ordering the census to exclude all noncitizens from apportionment. But one of President Joe Biden’s first acts in office was to reverse this policy as he began to open the border to millions of illegal aliens. Barring the census from including noncitizens in apportionment is critical in making sure that American citizens—the only population who can and should vote in U.S. elections—are picking America’s leaders. Biden’s intentional border crisis has produced unprecedented apportionment issues‚ distorting the representation that states have in the House‚ and how many electoral votes they have in presidential elections. Congressional and Electoral College apportionment is based on the number of residents‚ as determined by the census. Currently‚ the census includes illegal aliens and other noncitizens as residents.  Consequently‚ a state can gain extra congressional districts and representation in Congress thanks to the presence of a large population that isn’t legally allowed to vote. Since the number of congressional seats is limited to 435‚ this additional representation comes at the expense of other states. This warped representation is carried over into the Electoral College‚ where each state is allocated a number of votes equal to the number of senators and representatives in its congressional delegation. In a 2018 lawsuit against the Census Bureau within the Commerce Department‚ then-Rep. Mo Brooks‚ R-Ala.‚ wrote: In a state in which a large share of the population cannot vote‚ those who do vote count more than those who live in states where a larger share of the population is made up of American citizens. Counting large illegal alien populations in the Census appropriates voting power from Americans and bestows it on other[s]. Solving this flawed process is of paramount importance going into an election year. First‚ excluding noncitizens—tens of millions of whom are illegal aliens—from apportionment would help discourage sanctuary policies. Sanctuary jurisdictions like California‚ Illinois‚ and New York have welcomed illegal immigrants‚ at least in part‚ to keep their populations high.  During a 2021 hearing about Haitian migrants‚ Rep. Yvette Clarke‚ D-N.Y.‚ stated that her district “can absorb a significant number of these migrants‚” adding‚ “I need more people in my district just for redistricting purposes.” These states need to keep their population numbers inflated with illegal aliens because Americans citizens are fleeing in droves due to their disastrous policies. Making it clear to these states and their radical governors that they won’t be able to use illegal aliens to “cook their books” to maintain disproportionate political power (and money) will go a long way toward breaking the sanctuary state trend. Second‚ no longer including noncitizens in apportionment will help ensure that only American citizens will shape our political landscape and pick future leaders. Letting states include millions of aliens in their census counts is the equivalent of letting foreign countries determine the political destiny of the United States‚ which is unacceptable. To address this issue and restore trust in the electoral process‚ Congress should pass legislation to ensure that all future apportionment determinations only include American citizens. A Senate bill to do just that was recently unveiled by Sen. Bill Hagerty‚ R-Tenn.‚ and 20 of his colleagues‚ followed by a House companion led by Reps. Chuck Edwards‚ R-N.C.‚ and Warren Davidson‚ R-Ohio‚ that is gaining steam. If passed into law‚ this would likely end up before the Supreme Court‚ but it is on firm legal footing. The Constitution requires the counting of “persons‚” who the Founding Fathers almost certainly assumed to be citizens. Regardless of history or tradition‚ Congress has the plenary authority to define “persons” or otherwise clarify how the census is to be conducted.  To the extent past federal cases disagree with Congress on this point‚ Congress can effectively overrule case law and define “persons” as citizens and require the counting of only citizens in the census (or the non-counting of noncitizens) for apportionment. U.S. citizenship should mean something and come with rights‚ such as voting in elections‚ as well as responsibilities‚ such as obeying our laws. Congress must put an end to the electoral influence of a growing noncitizen population that is unfairly altering both representation in the House and the Electoral College. American citizens should not have their voting rights devalued or their congressional and presidential representation corrupted due to the inclusion of noncitizens in our census.
