How to Deal with Anger Graciously – Senior Living – November 30

How to Deal with Anger Graciously A hot-tempered man stirs up conflict‚ but the one who is patient calms a quarrel. – Proverbs 15:18 Many years ago‚ a senior executive of the then Standard Oil Company made a wrong decision that cost the company more than $2 million. Everyone at the company knew the executive's career was likely over. And most of the executives were finding various ways of avoiding the company's president‚ John D. Rockefeller‚ lest his wrath descend on their heads. There was one exception‚ however. He was Edward T. Bedford‚ a partner in the company who kept his appointment with Mr. Rockefeller. When he entered the office‚ he saw Rockefeller at his desk busily writing with a pencil on a pad of paper. Across the top of the page was written "Points in favor of Mr. _______." There followed a long list of the guilty executive's virtues‚ including a brief description of how he had helped the company make the right decision on three separate occasions that had earned many times the cost of his recent error. It can sometimes be easy to lose your temper. That's because so often‚ reactions to events tend to be just that-reactions-instead of responses. But if you take how you want to react‚ think it through‚ and consider the perspectives of others‚ you'll be much more inclined to respond biblically than react angrily. Prayer Challenge: Ask God to reveal to you in times of anger how you can respond rather than react. Pray that He would help you see others with a biblical perspective and that you would have a forgiving spirit when dealing with conflict. A Prayer for the Disappointment – Your Daily Prayer – November 30

A Prayer for Disappointment By Emily Rose Massey "I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth (Psalm 34:1‚ NKJV). I was involved in a movement some years ago that would constantly boast in having "aggressive expectations" and equating that way of thinking to "having faith." Aside from the vast misunderstanding of what faith in God means (to trust in Him no matter what happens) one of the problems with that ideology is that many times our expectations in this life are left unfulfilled or unmet completely. People fail us. Plans fall through. They went with a different candidate for the job. We experience month after month of negative pregnancy tests.  Since God's plans and ways are so much greater than our own‚ often our expectations do not look anything like what God may have for our life. When the expectations that we have held onto so aggressively fall flat‚ it is very easy for us to slip into disappointment. Disappointment can then often lead to complaining and discontentment‚ something we are commanded by Scripture to guard our hearts against. We very quickly forget the truth of God's sovereignty over all things when we believe we know what is best for our life.  When God allows for disappointment to happen in our life‚ we must remember that all things that come our way are meant to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in us and conform us to the image of Christ‚ whether we were expecting them to happen or not. When we are disappointed‚ we are given an appointment to praise God no matter what.  The Psalmist David proclaims in Psalm 34:"I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth (Psalm 34:1‚ NKJV). When our expectations are met‚ we should stop and praise God and bless His holy name; When our expectations are not met‚ we should still stop and praise God and bless His holy name. He is worthy of our praise and our thanksgiving. In His sovereign providence‚ we can trust that He works all things for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purposes (Romans 8:28). Nothing with God is coincidence or happenstance; He is sovereign and in control of every detail in our life‚ guiding our every step. His work in our lives is providential through and through‚ and He causes all things to work out for our good and for His glory. Next time your expectations are not met‚ remember it is an opportunity to make an appointment to praise God for His goodness. We can trust that His plans for our lives are so much better! Let's pray: Father God‚I am struggling with disappointment. Help me to guard my heart against discouragement‚ discontentment‚ and complaining. Teach me how to find ways to praise You when my expectations are not met. I know I need to trust in Your sovereignty and lean upon Your ways over my own. Your grace is sufficient for me‚ and I thank You for always guiding me into truth and convicting my heart when I fall into the sin of grumbling and complaining‚ thinking that I know better than You. My lips long to praise Your great name. Thank You for Your love for me and for changing my heart to reflect Yours. I pray You would use these unmet expectations to transform me and strengthen my faith in You.In Jesus' name‚ amen. How Can I Be Grateful When I Don’t Feel Grateful? – Encouragement for Today – November 30‚ 2023

November 30‚ 2023 How Can I Be Grateful When I Don't Feel Grateful?LYSA TERKEURST  Lee en español "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow‚ for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34 (NIV)  Sometimes being grateful means choosing to see what is instead of being blinded by what isn't. It's a tough choice in some moments. Brutal‚ actually. But it's worth fighting through. The last couple of years have been no walk in the park for me. I still have days where what's missing in my life feels like a huge‚ gaping hole. Everywhere I look‚ it feels like the hole is in the center of my vision. But then I'm faced with a choice. I can stare deep into the hole‚ or I can direct my gaze away from that hole and refocus on something else‚ like rolling out cookie dough with my granddaughters. I can pause to admire their precious faces and this priceless moment right in front of me. When I do this‚ I'm once again reminded that there is so much more to this one incredible life than the sum total of our heartbreak. And the same is true for you‚ friend. No matter what we've been going through lately‚ we can thank God for the gift of this day. Because here's what I'm learning: God gives us today grace. Look at the words of Matthew 6:34 with me: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow‚ for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." In my Bible‚ the heading above Matthew 6:25-34 also says‚ "Do Not Worry." It's no coincidence to me that this verse‚ the last verse of this entire section‚ warns us against looking to tomorrow. It's almost like the writer is communicating‚ This is the last thing I want you to remember. Take hold of these words. As I've personally reflected on these verses‚ I've realized that where I sometimes get in trouble with this whole idea of gratitude is when I try to carry today's stress with tomorrow's worry and the fear of six months from now ... all with today's grace. That's when it all feels like too much to bear. It's not that we don't want to plan for the future and be discerning about how to handle what's next responsibly. That's wise and good. It's just that we don't want to become so stressed‚ fearful and full of anxiety about tomorrow that we miss the grace and goodness of this beautiful day. You might say‚ "Lysa‚ how do I know God will give me grace for tomorrow?" I'm so glad you asked. Look at 1 Peter 5:10-11: "And the God of all grace‚ who called you to his eternal glory in Christ‚ after you have suffered a little while‚ will himself restore you and make you strong‚ firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen" (NIV). See‚ friend? He is "the God of all grace." Not some of it. All of it. So knowing this‚ we can receive both the grace and the gifts of today without missing one minute of its unexpected treasure. We can celebrate every bit of joy that is waiting to be found. We can choose to believe that gratitude isn't something we have access to only when our lives are perfect. No‚ choosing gratitude right in the middle of what's hard isn't denial. It is choosing to do only what can be done today. And since today is what we've been given‚ we can enjoy the mess. Receive the blessing. Dance it out at least one time. Fill in the gaps with prayer. And make it a goal to go to bed with smiles on our faces. And then tomorrow‚ we can choose it all over again. Dear Lord‚ You made me. You know me. I need Your help when I am weak. Help me see that even the smallest moments really do contain opportunities for gratitude. Give me the courage and the grace to do what pleases You. I want to do Your will and experience more of You in this season. In Jesus' Name‚ Amen.
