MSB sends 500 emergency housing units to Turkey

DOMESTIC. 500 emergency homes are to be sent from Sweden to earthquake victims in Turkey.

Following cooperation between Sweden and the EU, the European Commission has decided to activate the EU-joint preparedness to support the affected population with emergency housing.

This means that 500 emergency homes with room for five people in each are sent from Sweden to Turkey.

Work is currently underway to send a pooled resource of emergency housing, beds, heaters and other essential equipment to help the people whose homes have been destroyed.

In addition to this, MSB sends a response team to ensure that the resource is transported to the earthquake affected areas and that they are set up together with the local organizations on the ground. The effort is carried out within the framework of rescEU and the main part of the effort is financed by the EU.

- The focus right now is the important relief work of providing people with necessities such as food, water, shelter, medicines and accommodation and more. The advantage of the type of emergency accommodation that we are now sending is that they can be established relatively quickly and at the same time used for a longer period of time when reconstruction of destroyed houses is carried out, says Per Velandia, head of the unit for humanitarian efforts at MSB, in a statement.
