If you’ve noticed a slowdown in Mars news lately‚ it’s because of the Sun. Or‚ rather‚ it’s because the Sun is temporarily blocking our “view” of the Red Planet‚ which is on the other side of the Sun from Earth‚ in what’s called “Mars Solar Conjunction.” This happens every two years as Earth and Mars move through their orbits. The last one was in 2021. Of course‚ the missions don’t stop doing their work. They stockpile data until it’s safe to send their data-rich signals back. That means all the raw images and data are on “pause” until the solar conjunction ends. Mars Solar Conjunction Effects Ordinarily‚ the Mars missions send data back every day (depending on the craft). But‚ during this solar conjunction‚ those signals have to take a trajectory that brings the data stream close to the Sun. Of course‚ the Sun being the Sun‚ it’s constantly sending ionized gases and particles out to space through the corona. The environment corrupts signals moving through the near-Sun environment. In particular‚ that affects spacecraft commands and software updates. That happens to any data coming back from the planet. So‚ to keep things safe and “nominal”‚ the spacecraft engineers don’t send crucial commands during this time. And‚ the spacecraft themselves are programmed to do their normal science This year‚ the conjunction “blackout” runs until November 25th. NASA receives “health updates” during this time‚ other than a two-day period when Mars is completely blocked by the Sun. Mission scientists began planning for the Mars Solar Conjunction earlier this year. “Our mission teams have spent months preparing to-do lists for all our Mars spacecraft‚” said Roy Gladden‚ manager of the Mars Relay Network at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “We’ll still be able to hear from them and check their states of health over the next few weeks.” What Are the Mars Missions Doing? During this two-week period‚ all the missions are still busy. Other than some simple “to do list” items‚ most of the major instruments onboard the missions will be inactive. That doesn’t mean they won’t be doing science—it just won’t be the data-heavy tasks they normally undertake. NASA’s Perseverance and Curiosity rovers parked themselves for the time being. They’re monitoring changes in surface conditions and studying the weather. Each one is also measuring radiation as they stay in their respective stopped positions. Engineers grounded the Ingenuity helicopter. However‚ it’s still using its color camera to study the movement of sand at the site. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Odyssey orbiter are imaging the surface and MAVEN is collecting data on interactions between the atmosphere and the Sun. Once the two-week data “moratorium” ends‚ the orbiters will start relaying data again. Engineers will resume sending software updates and commands‚ and it will be back to “business as usual” for Mars exploration. Once data starts arriving‚ system engineers will check it for any corrupted files. If any exist‚ those can be retransmitted in a later data run. Finally‚ once the teams determine “all is well”‚ they’ll reactivate instruments‚ including all cameras. After that‚ the usual run of raw images and data should commence. When spacecraft land on the Moon‚ their exhaust strikes the powdery regolith on the lunar surface. The Moon has low gravity and no atmosphere‚ so the dust is thrown up in a huge plume. The dust cloud could possibly interfere with the navigation and science instruments or cause visual obstructions. Additionally‚ the dust could even be propelled into orbit‚ risking other spacecraft nearby. In working to better understand the impact future landers might have on the lunar surface‚ NASA has developed a new supercomputer simulation. They used it to predict how Apollo 12’s lunar lander exhaust would interact with regolith‚ then compared this to the actual results of the landing. Researchers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville‚ Alabama developed the new software to study plume-surface interactions (PSI). This gives engineers and scientists the tools to predict how various systems like SpaceX’s Starship or Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lander will affect the lunar surface‚ such as cratering or visual obstructions. The team at Marshall recently produced a simulation of the Apollo 12 lander engine plumes interacting with the surface. The simulations ran on the Pleaides supercomputer at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing facility at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley over several weeks of runtime‚ generating terabytes of data. NASA said the simulation predicted erosion that closely matched what happened during the landing‚ based on images and video from Apollo 12. The simulation shows the last 30 seconds of descent before engine cut-off‚ showing the predicted forces exerted by plumes on a flat computational surface. The simulation looked at shear stress‚ which is the amount of lateral‚ or sideways‚ force applied over a set area. In the video‚ you can see changing radial patterns which portray the intensity of predicted shear stress. Lower shear stress is dark purple‚ and higher shear stress is yellow. Shear stress is the leading cause of erosion as fluids flow across a surface The new software will help improve engineers’ understanding of plume-surface interactions. “These tools are helping NASA minimize risks to spacecraft and crew during future landed missions‚” NASA said.   Build any list of famous World War II battles‚ and Stalingrad easily ranks amongst the top five. The scale‚ ferocity‚ and effort that went into this fight are staggering. The fighting raged even deep in the city cellars‚ so German soldiers called it “Rattenkrieg” or Rat’s War. For most scholars‚ the official dates for Stalingrad are August 23‚ 1942‚ to February 2‚ 1943.   The Prelude: June 1942 A Stuka over Stalingrad. Source: Bundesarchiv   The march up to World War II’s bloodiest battle began with the Wehrmacht’s 1942 summer offensive. Defeated at Moscow the previous December‚ Hitler split Germany’s army Army Group A and B – Moscow could wait. Starting June 28‚ 1942‚ Army Group B in the Ukraine‚ with primarily German troops‚ fought westwards towards the Volga River and Stalingrad. The Soviet dictator‚ Joseph Stalin‚ ordered the city held at all costs. The Red Army fought back‚ but the Germans outflanked any defenses‚ racing for their target. They reached Stalingrad and points north and south on August 23. Source: Bundesarchiv    Stalingrad was a major industrial Soviet city. Here tank factories manufactured fifty percent of all T-34s. The city’s steel mills produced artillery‚ the T60 light tank‚ and other goods. Stalingrad was also a crucial transport hub‚ connecting Russia with the north and east. Oil from Baku‚ Grozny‚ and the Caucasus came through here. The German and Russian generals realized that river traffic would stop should Stalingrad fall‚ cutting the Soviet Union in half. For this very reason‚ capturing the city became a priority.   The fighting grew heavier through September and October‚ completely pounding the city to rubble. The Luftwaffe flew over 900 daily sorties‚ bombing both sides of the Volga. The Soviets could only resupply at night. Source: Wikimedia Commons   Stalingrad’s urban warfare was unlike anything the Germans had encountered. The rubble and ruined buildings provided effective concealment. Vicious fighting ranged from roofs to confined basements; sometimes‚ the Soviets and Germans occupied one building‚ shooting at each other. The “Rat’s War” or Rattenkrieg‚ as the Germans coined the fighting‚ sometimes came down clearing rooms by bayonets. Many Russians fought to the death.   The battle evolved into a numbers game. The newly formed Soviet 62nd Army was Stalingrad’s main army. Trapped against the Volga‚ the Russians ferried enough replacements across the Volga to slow the Germans despite the artillery and aerial poundings. The lightly armed Russian units kept close to the German ones so that artillery couldn’t be used without injuries.    Throughout September‚ the German Sixth Army launched repeated assaults. By September 27‚ the Germans occupied Stalingrad’s southern part. By October 14‚ they split the defenders in half‚ controlling over 90% of the city. The Sixth Army lost 60‚000 men killed from August to November. Source: Bundesarchiv   Stalingrad quickly became a contention of pride for both leaders. Neither could bear or afford the other side to win – despite their armies suffering. Perennially paranoid Stalin knew should the Red Army be vanquished‚ a coup d’etat may occur. Since 1941‚ Russian military casualties numbered in the millions in multiple defeats. One this glaring could be the last. To stiffen resistance‚ he issued the decree “Not a Step Back!” Any who surrendered could be shot. Plus‚ this city on the Volga bore his name. A defeat simply could not stand.   Hitler’s prickly pride won over military sense. Despite the Wehrmacht command staff’s advice‚ he ordered more units into the Stalingrad meatgrinder. Source: Der Spiegel   Fate came for the Wehrmacht on November 19‚ 1942. For weeks‚ the Germans noticed signs of a vast Soviet buildup north of Stalingrad. Hitler responded with “keep attacking.” And the Red Army attacked. Using a plan from Stalin’s favorite general Zhukov‚ a two-pronged attack around the city‚ the Soviets crushed the weak Hungarian‚ Italian ‚ and Romanians guarding the Sixth Army’s flanks. By November 23‚ the Germans were encircled. Hitler forbade a breakout as Goering promised an aerial resupply but failed. The Sixth Army possessed little food or ammunition.    The Wehrmacht attempted to break the siege but could not break through. The Russians squeezed until the Sixth Army split in two. On February 2‚ 1943‚ Field Marshal Paulus surrendered his army. 250‚000 German soldiers fought into Stalingrad‚ but only 91‚000 surrendered. Thousands would die in Russian camps. This massive defeat marked a turning point in the war against Germany.
