Two-thirds of Democrats and a majority of independents want President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 White House race amid concerns about his cognitive health following a shaky debate performance last month, the results of a new poll show. The survey from The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos found 56% of Democrats said they think Biden should step aside and let someone else run given his debate showing, while 42% said they believe he should continue his re-election campaign and 2% skipped the question. Beyond just Democrats, 67% of U.S. adults who participated in the poll said they think Biden should bow out, 30% said they believe the president should remain in the race, and 3% skipped the question. The Post said the results “contradict Biden’s claim that only party elites want him to step aside.” It also noted that more than 7-in-10 independents who participated in the poll said they think Biden should withdraw from the race. Fifty percent of U.S. adults said they view Biden less favorably because of the debate, which CNN hosted a little more than two weeks ago. Another 42% said there was no difference, while 7% said they think more favorably of Biden after the debate. Respondents answered the same questions about former President Donald Trump, who faced Biden in the debate. The vast majority — 88% — of Republicans said they think Biden should step aside and let someone else run given his debate showing, while 11% said they believe he should continue his 2024 campaign and 1% skipped the question. Among U.S. adults in general, 50% said they believe Trump should bow out, while 47% said they believe the former president should remain in the race, and 3% skipped the question. Respondents gravitated more to Trump (44%) than Biden (14%) when asked whether the mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president applied to one candidate over the other. With Biden’s debate performance notwithstanding, ABC News reported that Democrats stuck with the president 91-5% while Republicans stood by Trump 94-4%. Independents went 40% for Biden and 44% for Trump. The survey also found that 85% of respondents see Biden, 81, as too old for a second presidential term, and 60% of respondents said the same of 78-year-old Trump. Seventy percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents said they would be satisfied with Vice President Kamala Harris taking Biden’s place as the party’s 2024 presidential nominee. A little more than a quarter of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents picked Harris, more than any other individual, in an open-ended question seeking suggestions for a replacement for Biden while 31% chose not to answer. Pollsters conducted the survey from July 5 to July 9 among 2,431 respondents, according to a document on the results. The survey had a margin of sampling error of plus-or-minus two percentage points for the full sample as well as the sample of 2,041 registered voters.

After ardently defending President Joe Biden in the wake of his disastrous performance against Donald Trump on the debate stage, Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer admitted on Wednesday that she only watched “clips” of the June 27 event. Whitmer, who is also a national co-chair of the Biden campaign, joined late-night host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night to promote her new book and discuss the Democratic Party’s worries surrounding Biden. The Michigan governor has been floated as a potential replacement candidate for Democrats if Biden were to drop out of the race, but she has repeatedly said she fully supports the president’s re-election bid as some Democrats call for him to step aside. “Did you watch the debate?” Colbert asked. “I’ve seen clips of the debate,” Whitmer said. “You didn’t watch the debate?” Colbert pressed. Whitmer laughed and replied, “I was actually out on the West Coast with a couple of my colleagues [for] a fundraiser.” “I forgot, they don’t have television in California,” Colbert quipped. It was a lousy performance. I don’t think anyone’s disputing that,” she said. “I spent some time with the president in the White House with a number of my colleagues shortly after the debate, I talked to him this past weekend with all of the other vice chairs of his campaign, co-chairs, and, you know, he’s up for this.” “He’s up for the job for the next four years, and I am working my tail off on his behalf,” Whitmer added. In a USA Today interview published on Tuesday, Whitmer said the debate was only “a 90-minute snapshot of someone who has been back and forth to Europe twice in one week,” adding that Biden keeps a “really aggressive calendar.” Michigan, a vital swing state in the presidential election, is slightly leaning in Trump’s direction, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls. Biden took Michigan in 2020 after Trump narrowly won the state over Hillary Clinton in 2016.

There is no such thing as a free nation where the police and military are allowed to keep and bear arms and citizens are not. Our Founding Fathers understood this and enshrined the basic right to self-defense in the U.S. Constitution. The Second Amendment guarantees the absolute ability to live in peace without fear. The U.S. Supreme Court has, time and again, reaffirmed that right. Yet elected Democrats and other stakeholders continue their all-out assault on this freedom with the ultimate goal of denying law-abiding Americans the opportunity to purchase and carry guns. That’s why, in 2022, I became concerned when Visa and Mastercard announced they would separately categorize and track purchases for guns and ammunition. This move followed the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an international standards organization based out of Europe, approving an application for a firearm-specific Merchant Category Code (MCC). This move would set a dangerous precedent targeting legal gun owners, the vast majority of whom are Republicans or independents who lean Right. A specific MCC for gun purchases would subject Americans attempting to exercise their constitutional rights to unnecessary and unethical surveillance. If rolled out, a national gun registry would be closer than ever, even though it is prohibited by federal law. The Left, however, does not care about the rule of law and they certainly aren’t hiding their desire to take away your freedoms. An elected Democrat recently called a federal gun registry a “wonderful idea.” A gun-specific MCC is a clear threat to the privacy and Second Amendment rights of all Americans. Not only does it present an easy opportunity for liberal institutions to de-bank firearms sellers, which is abruptly closing financial accounts for religious and political reasons, but it could also discourage Americans from exercising their Constitutionally-protected rights. Importantly, the MCC would do absolutely nothing to improve public safety. The application for a gun- and ammo-specific MCC came from Amalgamated Bank in 2022, a blatantly Left-wing company that dubs itself America’s “socially responsible bank” and proudly says deposited money supports “sustainable organizations, progressive causes, and social justice.” Upon further examination, it’s clear the organization is closely connected to the Democrat Party. The New York Times in 2015 even called it “the left’s private banker.” Clients of the union-owned bank include President Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Nancy Pelosi. Additional past and present clients include the Democratic Governors Association, the Biden Foundation, the Democratic National Committee, and Ready for Hillary 2016. Not exactly ardent defenders of the Second Amendment. Amalgamated has also explicitly called for unconstitutional red-flag laws and says it discriminates against gun, nuclear weapon and ammunition manufacturers and distributors. Radical private organizations like this and the ISO should be nowhere near our Second Amendment. At the time of the approval, Amalgamated Chief Executive Priscilla Sims Brown said the move “answers the call of millions of Americans who want safety from gun violence.” Does this call supersede the constitutional right to keep and bear arms? As a state representative serving the people of Northwest Tennessee, I can tell you my constituents would say that coastal elites and liberal corporations better stay far away from their guns and finances. That’s why I set out to ensure this gun tracking scheme would never happen in the Volunteer State. This year, I sponsored the Second Amendment Financial Privacy Act, which was passed by the General Assembly and went into effect July 1. This new law will prohibit financial institutions from requiring retailers to use a specific MCC for firearms sellers in Tennessee. Law-abiding Americans deserve to make these purchases without fear of liberal corporations and an overbearing federal government coordinating to spy on them. I was proud to provide that peace of mind to Tennesseans with the passage of this new law. Just before the new law took effect, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti warned that Visa, Mastercard and American Express were potentially gearing up to ignore it. “Specifically, I am concerned that your compliance efforts are not sufficient and will allow you and other financial institutions to continue to utilize impermissible codes in violation of Tennessee law,” he said in a June letter to the chief executives of each company. No credit card company should be able to cancel the votes of millions of Tennesseans by disobeying our policies. We’ve already seen the Orwellian-like behavior from the Biden Administration and the private companies all too willing to hand over sensitive information. Earlier this year, the House Judiciary Committee revealed federal investigators had asked financial institutions to search customer transactions for various MCCs, stores and phrases, including Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, Dicks Sporting Goods, and MAGA. The goal? Rooting out alleged “extremism” following the events at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. If the federal government and private companies are already using banking information to target conservatives, ask yourself why they might want a separate MCC for firearms and ammunition sellers. It’s clear that in attempting to force these codes on Americans, they are also attempting to reshape what the Second Amendment means in our country. Americans are tired of these people and groups pushing an agenda contrary to our founding ideals. I’m proud Tennessee has taken a stand against the ever-increasing leftist corporate-government alliance meant to intimidate and silence Christians and conservatives. This double standard in condemning potential right-wing violence while excusing or even encouraging left-wing unrest is a glaring example of her hypocritical approach to political discourse. Kearsarge Pass trail is a beautiful place to hike. When hikers took their dog, Loki, through the 12.4-mile out-and-back trail, they did not expect him to get injured and be unable to walk. Fortunately, some other helpful hikers and volunteers from the Inyo Search and Rescue (SAR) team were there to help. The groups worked together, making this mountain dog rescue a huge success. @inyosar Last week, Inyo SAR was called to help rescue a large dog on Kearsarge Pass trail. While this is rather unusual for us, in this case, there were available volunteers and no other incidents at the same time. Loki the dog got injured near Kearsarge Pass and couldn’t move on his own anymore. A few PCT hikers who happened to pass by started helping Loki’s owner by turning a tarp into a makeshift litter. They carried Loki for multiple miles, until all humans got too tired carrying 90 extra pounds. By the time they called SAR for help, they were within 2 miles of the trailhead. 4 Inyo SAR rescuers and dog lovers decided to drive down and help out with a wheeled litter. Accidents can happen to everyone, and there are special dog backpacks to carry an injured pup that we recommend all dog owners bring with them. However, we could see that 90lbs is a little bit heavy and came out to help. Inyo SAR is an all-volunteer and unpaid, professional non-profit 501(c)3 organization in cooperation with and under the authority of the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office. But what happens when the injury is to your dog and he’s too big to carry? Luckily, a few hikers doing the Pacific Coast Trail (PCT) passed the stranded group. They helped to make a stretcher from a tarp. Working together, the hikers carried the 90-pound Loki several miles down the trail. When the humans were all exhausted, they called Inyo SAR. At that point, they were about 2 miles from the trailhead. Image from TikTok. Inyo SAR jumped into action. SAR members brought a wheeled litter and were able to carry Loki the rest of the way down the trail. Inyo SAR is an all-volunteer non-profit organization.
