Analog Terms in a Digital Age

Throughout our day-to-day adventures‚ words are spoken with a select few which intrigue us‚ ceasing our attention‚ especially those of us who remember the analog days. While many of the words or phrases generate songs or scenes from movies or television shows in the minds eye‚ a few of them are carved out exclusively as old‚ nearly forgotten terms yet utilized in our modern‚ digital age.  Here are just a few examples which have recently been in the forefront of this very discussion. For instance the term "tape;" when we record any kind of audio or video‚ we use the word tape as a verb.  "We taped the game last night."  "We taped our broadcast for later."  This term is commonly heard still to this day and is strongly used in the broadcast realm.Another term heard quite prevalent is "paperwork."  In fairness‚ many businesses still utilize paper‚ in fact an electric motor service center still uses paper billing registers‚ like the one pictured‚ in our hometown!  Nevertheless‚ when we complete forms in the doctor's office‚ fill out the annual tax forms‚ student registration‚ car and home buying‚ etc‚ the phrases uttered are "doing the paperwork‚" "Digging through the paperwork‚" or "We have lots of paperwork to complete.""Listening to the radio" is a phrase that is a little mixed; however the term tends to surface more abundantly when people are listening on their digital devices.  Whether it be a podcast or even a streaming video‚ the sentences are similar to "I'm listening to the radio" or "Wait‚ let me turn off my radio" when they are actually listening to the audio‚ music‚ or even video on their smartphone.  However‚ this terminology is intermixed as there are many of us that still listen to the AM/FM radio within our vehicles‚ at the very least. Not to be confused with a studio apartment‚ nonetheless the term "studio" has stepped through an entire century.  Once upon a time‚ it was a large room for the old radio shows which originated in grand studio rooms.  Think of the Three Stooges Short titled Micro-Phonies (pictured above) or even classic television shows where a radio broadcast is depicted as the broadcaster or even the actor/actresses are verbally acting out the show.  Moving ahead‚ recording studios for the music artist‚ the television studios where our shows and movies originated; even radio station studios are nothing more than a room with a desk of equipment and a few microphones.  In today's modern videos to include the recent episode of Memory Jogger‚ when we say "our studios" they are‚ in fact‚ now digitally generated in which a green screen camouflages the bare‚ studded wall behind the broadcaster‚ yet we still say that we "are coming to you from our studio."The term "album" is a nearly forgotten term‚ even when used as a photo album.  However‚ the word seems to be returning from near extinction as that word does pop up when carefully heard amongst the latest generation of teenagers.  Still scarce‚ yet when I am DJ'ing‚ in particular‚ that very word has surfaced when the youngsters are conversing about a modern day artist and their wanting to get the latest "album download."Are there analog terms that are used in this digital age?  Please share them!

Country Music Star Toby Keith Dead At 62

Country music star Toby Keith died Monday in Oklahoma after a battle with stomach cancer‚ his family announced in a statement. He was 62. During a career that spanned over three decades‚ he scored 32 No. 1 hits and 42 top 10 hits‚ according to his website. His biggest hits included “Beer For My Horses‚” “As Good As I Once Was‚” “Courtesy of the Red‚ White‚ and Blue‚” and “Red Solo Cup.” Keith’s cause of death was not immediately revealed. “Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5th‚ surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time‚” a post on X from his personal account said. pic.twitter.com/NfdLKGLQQe — Toby Keith (@tobykeith) February 6‚ 2024 The country singer had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2021 but only publicly revealed his medical situation in a June 2022 tweet. “Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer‚” Keith tweeted in June 2022. “I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo‚ radiation and surgery. So far‚ so good. I need time to breathe‚ recover and relax.” After describing his cancer battle as a “roller coaster” in September 2023‚ Keith told Fox News Digital that his faith played a major role in helping him cope. “I lean on my faith and I just pray and lean into it. You gotta’ do what you gotta’ do‚ and I don’t know how people do it without faith … that’s what I did‚ it was my rock.” In December‚ the “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” hitmaker finally got back to touring and performed three sold-out shows at Park MGM’s Dolby Live in Las Vegas. Keith said during an appearance on the “Superstar Power Hour” podcast back in January that he was “turning a corner” in his cancer fight. I don’t know if you’re ever done with it [cancer]‚ but I’m trying to be.” Keith also told the host that he felt “weird in 2023‚” noting that he’d never had a year off from performing in his life. “And this is my 30th year in the [country music] business‚ so it was really weird just sitting here with your handcuffs on‚” the singer explained. He is survived by his wife Tricia‚ three children‚ and four grandchildren. Amanda Harding and Katie Jerkovich contributed to this report.

“Idk What Men Do For Fun So I Took Him To Home Depot.” Woman Shares Silly Video Bonding With Her Cat.

In a hilarious bonding adventure‚ a female cat owner attempts to bond with her male cat‚ Louie the Lilac Ragdoll. Louie is a beautiful longhair ragdoll cat. If you’re familiar with the breed‚ they can be personable. Each has their own idea of what it is to be a cat. Taylor Swift’s ragdoll Benjamin Button recently graced the cover of Time Magazine. Another proud ragdoll momma cat introduced her kitten to the family’s infant. Louie the Lilac Ragdoll travels a lot with his human. He doesn’t always behave at the pet store‚ but they enjoy a pretty active lifestyle. One recent outing was to Home Depot where the mom expected to do some quality “male bonding” with Louie. The scene opens with them cruising the aisles. Louie is in the child seat of a shopping cart as they traverse the store. Image from TikTok. The bonding seemed to be going well. Louie the Lilac Ragdoll made a special request to check out power washers. Image from TikTok. After their stroll through the power washer aisle‚ it was time to hit the lumber section. Louie thinks the lumber prices are highway robbery. That might put a damper on his plans to build a new deck! Image from TikTok. The bonding continues in a second video as the pair goes to check out the sale on lighting fixtures. There is a brief discussion about getting a new miter saw to help with this project. Louie the Lilac Ragdoll seemed to get really excited in the tool aisle and began purring. That’s a cat after my own heart! Rechecking all the wood prices‚ Louie still maintains that prices are “Ridiculous.” Louie’s reaction to a stranger offering unwanted advice is typical. Louie the Lilac Ragdoll Enjoyed This Bonding Adventure You can view the first part of this adventure below. @louiethelilacragdoll Just dudes being dudes #catsoftiktok ♬ original sound – Louie the Ragdoll Cat If you aren’t aware‚ many big box home improvement stores are pet-friendly. Lowe’s even hired a man AND his service dog‚ Charlotte! If you ask an employee‚ they will find you a box to lay in the bottom of your cart so the grates don’t hurt your pet’s feet. They are very accommodating as long as your pet is well-behaved and on a leash. If you enjoyed this excursion into this mom and Louie the Lilac Ragdoll bonding‚ please share it. You can watch the second half of the adventure below. Overall‚ the trip was a success. Man Approaches Woman At The Gym‚ And Their Interaction Will Restore Your Faith In Humanity.

Thanks to a positive interaction with a fellow gym-goer‚ a fitness influencer is praising her “community” for helping her find her footing as she works to reach her goals. Katie Fox‚ a self-proclaimed “beginner CrossFit girly‚” has been documenting her health journey on TikTok since September 2023. She highlights her highs and lows and also hands out encouragement along the way. @katiefox___ Little wholesome moment today! First gym session back after christmas. I’m such an anxious person in the gym ah! #beginnergymtips #beginnergymmistakes #beginnergymanxiety #crossfitbeginner #confusedgymgirl #glasgowcontentcreator ♬ To build a home – 𝙇𝙭𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙯 Recently‚ she posted a video that proved how helpful other gymgoers can be. In it‚ she recorded herself trying a lift and falling over in the process. In the caption‚ she admitted that she struggles with anxiety‚ and she’s always worried people are “starring” at her while she’s working out. So when she fell‚ she was humiliated. Someone did notice that Katie was struggling in the gym that day‚ and they also noticed the look of defeat and embarrassment on her face‚ so they stepped in to get her back on her feet. First‚ the man made sure Katie was okay. When she said she was‚ he assured her that her setback was “part of the process.” TikTok “All the failures…part of the process‚” he urged. “Don’t worry about yourself. Get yourself up! Try again.” The man gave her a fist bump‚ told her not to “worry about it‚” and reminded her once again to get herself up and “try again.” Of course‚ Katie did get up and try again. And the best part is that she was able to do it with a smile on her face. Share this story to remind your friends who feel discouraged by their own setbacks to get up and keep trying. 10 Things You Can Do When You’re Just Too Busy To Prep

Author of Be Ready for Anything and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course We all try to seek balance in our lives‚ but there are times when things just get a little bit out of control. Maybe you have a new baby. Maybe there is something major going on at work. You could have a sick family member‚ a big home project going on‚ the kids are involved in something that requires lots of driving on your part‚ or maybe you’re injured.  The point is‚ in all of our lives‚ sometimes a situation arises during which we’re too busy to prep in the way we usually do. When this happens‚ it can add to an already elevated stress level. You know you should be doing more to be prepared but there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do the things you want to do. Sometimes it isn’t even that you’re too busy – sometimes‚ your motivation just takes a beating because there are so many negative and stressful things going on in the world. When this happens‚ you just don’t feel like actively focusing on preparedness all the time. During times like these‚ the best thing you can do is focus on fitting in small tasks when you can. Try to do one small thing per day to keep your prepper mojo going. And most of all‚ try not to worry about the things that you aren’t doing. You’ll get there. I have faith in you. What to do when you’re too busy to prep Carry a book with you at all times. A Kindle e-reader device might be handier in this situation than a physical copy‚ and if you are a member of Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited Program‚ you can often “borrow” all the books you want for about $12 a month.  Take those moments when you’re sitting in the car waiting to pick up the kids from an activity‚ when you are on a break at work‚ or when you’d normally be watching a show on TV and learn something – anything – that will make you more prepared. Also‚ if you don’t have an e-reader‚ don’t despair. You can add a Kindle app to your phone or a tablet and use that to read your ebooks. Take those little moments to work on skills. In those same short breaks‚ as I mentioned above‚ work on a skill that would be handy post-disaster. Take your knitting with you or do some kind of small‚ portable task. Add a little to your stockpile each week.  Hopefully‚ before life got crazy‚ you had a good handle on the weak points in your stockpile. So‚ if you know that you need fruits and vegetables‚ for example‚ pick up some shelf-stable items at the store during your regular shopping trip each week. If you need dry milk‚ quickly order high-quality dry milk online. If you need meat‚ buy some canned fish at the store or order some freeze-dried beef crumbles. Make one purchase each week and you’ll still be increasing your stockpile. Make your downtime count. Keep your prepper mindset sharp by using it often. If you are taking a couple of hours to sit down with the family and watch a movie‚ watch something that will let you think through a scenario. Here’s a list of survival-themed movies – grab some popcorn! Family time on the weekend can be used for prepping activities.  Make family time something active. If you’re spending some time together on the weekend‚ go for a hike‚ spend some time brushing up on your nature skills‚ and work on your fitness. Teach your kids some skills. Obviously‚ no matter how busy we are‚ we still want to spend time with our kids. Spend a summer evening making homemade jam with your kids. It might take a little bit longer but they’ll be very proud of “their” jam and you’ll get some food preservation done at the same time. (You can get some recipes in The Prepper’s Canning Guide.)  Try to make it fun instead of one of those things you “have” to do. Organize things into kits. If you have a little time‚ organize the things you already have into kits. I like to use plastic organizers of varying sizes. Not only will this help you to be ready for an emergency quickly‚ it will help you to see what you’re missing so that you can order it online. Some examples of kits might be: cold remedies‚ power outage‚ contagious illness‚ allergies‚ bug-out bags‚ important paperwork‚ evacuation kits – you get the idea. Here’s an article I wrote with some advice on kits. Shop online.  When you’re super busy‚ you don’t always have time to trek to the store to shop for your preparedness gear and supplies. If you know what you need‚ shop online and have the stuff delivered right to your door. Amazon really does have almost anything you might need‚ from camping gear to books to emergency supplies. Buy food in buckets.  When you prep‚ you’re either going to have to spend time or spend money. If you’re short on time‚ you don’t want to have to transfer everything to Mylar bags and buckets on your own. Order some emergency buckets‚ and all you have to do is put them away with the seal intact. The buckets linked to above contain “entree.” (Although we like to supplement with extra freeze-dried fruits and vegetables when using these goods.) This is a great way to vastly increase your emergency food supply without spending much time doing it. Practice using your emergency food. The thing about emergency food is that it should be fairly fast and easy to fix.  What better opportunity to test out some of your stockpile ingredients than to use them for a speedy meal when you’re short on time?  Make some meals by combining freeze-dried food from your buckets with canned food from your pantry. See what kind of delicious combinations you can come up with. This will also give you a chance to see if you need to pick up some extra spices or other shelf-stable ingredients to make the meals more palatable or filling. (Time-saving bonus: This is a great way to skip the weekly trip to the store!) Have you ever been too busy to prep? Have you ever run into a period of time when you were just too busy to prep the way you wanted to? What were some quick things that you found the time for? How do you stay motivated when life gets crazy busy? Share your stories and suggestions in the comments below.
