Justice Department Concludes Probe Into Proposed Islamic Development
The Justice Department has concluded its probe into the proposed East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) City development in Texas.
“EPIC City plans include over 1,000 homes, a mosque, a K-12 school, and commercial developments on 402 acres,” FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth stated.
The federal investigation opened after Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) raised concerns about potential religious discrimination.

In a letter to Community Capital Partners, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the department was closing its investigation.
"CCP has affirmed that all will be welcome in any future development, and that you plan to revise and develop marketing materials to reinforce that message consistent with your obligations under the Fair Housing Act," Dhillon said in the June 13 letter. "Based on this information, the Department is closing its investigation at this time."
The Council on American Islamic Relations released a statement Wednesday afternoon applauding the decision to drop the investigation.
"We welcome the dropping of this investigation and hope the DOJ’s actions send a clear message to the governor and other officials in Texas that they should similarly drop their Islamophobic witch hunt targeting Muslims in that state," CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said. "Elected officials should respect the Constitution and serve all state residents instead of abusing their authority to discriminate against Muslims."
The organization had previously said the investigations amounted to "zoning harassment, discriminatory enforcement, and politically motivated intimidation."
Representatives for the project said last month that development on the project hasn't started and only traffic, water and flood studies have happened at the site near Josephine, Texas.
The development still faces ongoing investigations by Texas officials.

EPIC City is planned for 400 acres in Josephine, pending approval from Collin County Commissioners.
The developers, Community Capital Partners, say the community will be open to people of all faiths. However, the project still faces at least three ongoing investigations from state agencies, including the Texas Attorney General's Office and the Texas Workforce Commission.
"Never in 42 years of practicing criminal defense have I seen the number and absurdity of the accusations lodged here," Cogdell said. "We will comply fully and completely."
Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 4211, which his office says is designed to prevent developments like EPIC City from creating "no-go zones" by restricting land sales or rentals based on religious affiliation.
Despite the bill's implications, Dan Cogdell, attorney for EPIC City, said the development supports the legislation.
"Anyone is welcome to buy and live there," Cogdell said. "This is nothing more than a political opportunity for Abbott and others to claim they defeated an evil that never existed."
