‘100% Preventable’: Illegal Immigrant Trucker Accused Of Causing Fatal Wreck In Indiana

An Indian illegal immigrant behind the wheel of a semi-truck allegedly caused a fatal accident on an Indiana road on Wednesday. Sukhdeep Singh allegedly ran a red light before striking 64-year-old Terry Schultz in his pickup truck in Hendricks County, according to reports. Schultz died at the scene. Federal law enforcement sources told The Daily Wire that Singh crossed the border illegally in 2018 and was released into the country because he was a minor at the time. Singh had a valid work permit at the time of the crash and, according to Fox News, an Indiana commercial driver’s license. The Indian national is currently in ICE custody, where he will be held without bond, per a Trump administration policy. Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement Thursday that deadly collisions involving illegal immigrants are becoming all too common. “This tragedy comes less than two weeks after another illegal alien driving a semi-truck killed four innocent people in Indiana. It is incredibly dangerous for illegal aliens, who often don’t know our traffic laws or even English, to be operating semi-trucks on America’s roads. These tragedies are 100% preventable and we pray for the family and victim,” McLaughlin said. “Thanks to ICE and our state and local partners in law enforcement, this criminal illegal alien is now off our roads,” she added. The Hendricks County Sheriff’s department just released details about the fatal crash that happened at noon today in Avon. According to multiple eyewitnesses a Freightliner semi-truck with trailer was traveling eastbound on US 36 when it ran the red light at the intersection of… pic.twitter.com/hFZOLmVrEP — Angela Ganote (@angelaganote) February 18, 2026 Singh already had previous traffic violations on his record, according to Fox59. That included a ticket for lacking insurance after a car crash in January. He also had three speeding tickets and a citation for no registration, the outlet reported. One witness, Kate Breedlove, went to comfort Schultz as he took his last breaths, according to Fox59. “I think there was a lot of chaos going on and I made it my job to be calming to him,” Breedlove recalled. “I was just telling him everything was going to be okay. He was unresponsive, but at some point, I think he definitely took his last breath,” she said. Republican Indiana Senator Jim Banks recently created a hotline “for truckers and those in the trucking industry to report concerns about carriers employing or contracting with drivers who are in the country illegally.” In early February, an illegal immigrant from Kyrgyzstan who was given a Pennsylvania commercial driver’s license allegedly killed four people in Indiana while behind the wheel of a truck. In November, an illegal immigrant from the Republic of Georgia who was driving an 18-wheeler allegedly caused a fatal wreck that killed Indiana National Guardsman Terry Frye. “How many times are we going to see this same story happen again? It feels like every single week there is another family planning a funeral because illegals who can’t read our road signs and don’t follow our laws are allowed on our highways,” Banks said in a post on X Thursday. “This is not bad luck. This is not just another accident. This is a national crisis! I am sick of it. We need real accountability and a major overhaul. I’m calling on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to investigate chameleon carrier networks in Indiana and will be introducing legislation to get unsafe, illegal drivers off our roads before another life is lost and another family gets destroyed,” he added. The Trump administration has already commenced a nationwide crackdown on trucking companies, commercial driver’s license schools, and states issuing licenses to illegal immigrants.

Elias-Backed Coalition Sues Trump Over Ouster of LGBTQ, Climate Exhibits at Federal Parks, Museums

A coalition is suing over President Donald Trump’s executive order to remove language and exhibits at federal parks and museums that “disparage” America.  The 60-page complaint in the case, filed by Democrat election lawyer Marc Elias’s group Democracy Forward, asserts, “telling a more complete and accurate history, including that of African Americans, women, Indigenous people, Latinx people, LGBTQ+ people, and immigrants, may be attracting the most visitors” to national parks.  The complaint says that at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Arizona, a sign of someone holding a pride flag was removed. The lawsuit further says that climate change materials were removed from Glacier National Park in Montana and Acadia National Park in Maine.  In March 2025, Trump signed the executive order, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” to focus on the Smithsonian, Independence Hall and other major parks and museums under the federal purview.  The executive order asserts the Biden administration, “advanced this corrosive ideology” to “rewrite our Nation’s history.” It noted at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, “the prior administration sponsored training by an organization that advocates dismantling ‘Western foundations’ and ‘interrogating institutional racism’ and pressured National Historical Park rangers that their racial identity should dictate how they convey history to visiting Americans because America is purportedly racist.”  In May, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum issued a memo stating that improvements under the order would be complete by July 4, 2026, the official 250th anniversary of the United States.  The Burgum memo directs the department to “take action, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law, to ensure that all public monuments, memorials, statues, markers, or similar properties within the Department’s jurisdiction do not contain descriptions, depictions, or other content that inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times), and instead focus on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people or, with respect to natural features, the beauty, abundance, and grandeur of the American landscape.” The coalition’s complaint in National Parks Conservation Association v. Department of the Interior was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, which could be a favorable venue for the plaintiffs. Democracy Forward is a liberal litigation group that has filed numerous lawsuits against the Trump administration.  Elias, who has represented Hillary Clinton and most other high profile Democrats in election litigation, is the chairman of the board for Democracy Forward.  Democracy Forward President Skye Perryman said, “You cannot tell the story of America without recognizing both the beauty and the tragedy of our history.” “The president’s effort to erase history and science in our national parks violates federal law, and is a disgrace that neither honors our country’s legacy nor its future,” Perryman said in a public statement.  The Interior Department did not immediately respond to inquiries for this story.  The post Elias-Backed Coalition Sues Trump Over Ouster of LGBTQ, Climate Exhibits at Federal Parks, Museums appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Special Election to Replace Greene May Test Trump’s Grip on Georgia GOP

Northwest Georgia faces a crowded race to fill the surprise vacancy in Congress created by the sudden departure of Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene, who represented the state’s 14th Congressional District, recently resigned from Congress following escalating disputes with President Donald Trump.  The dispute erupted after Greene pushed for the release of Justice Department files linked to Jeffrey Epstein, causing Trump to withdraw his endorsement and call her “wacky” and a “ranting lunatic.”  Her sudden resignation set the stage for a special general election on March 10 to fill the seat. The race has drawn unusual attention due to the size and diversity of the field—more than 20 candidates in total—and the district’s reliably Republican lean. Early voting is already underway.  Republican Candidates  The Republican candidates include Star Black, Reagan Box, Beau Brown, Jared Craig, Eric Cunningham, Clay Fuller, Tom Gray, Trey Kelly, Nicky Lama, Colton Moore, Brian Stover, Megahn Strickland, Jim Tully, and Jennifer Turnipseed.  Fuller, currently the district attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit, said voters are “looking for someone to carry President Trump’s banner, support his agenda, and fight for him on Capitol Hill.”   He emphasizes that he is the only candidate Trump has endorsed.  THANK YOU, Mr. President. This is the honor of a lifetime. I will not let you or Georgia’s 14th District down. Our work to put America first is just getting started! pic.twitter.com/YjBsu2v0Rm— Clay Fuller (@Clay4MainStreet) February 5, 2026 Fuller isn’t the only Republican taking a lesson from Greene’s downfall and emphasizing loyalty to Trump.  Moore has also highlighted his past role as “Trump’s Floor Leader” during his time in the Georgia Senate and is campaigning on lowering taxes, deporting illegal immigrants, fighting for what he calls “the hard-working people of Georgia,” and being pro-Trump.  ?I AM OFFICIALLY RUNNING FOR CONGRESS IN GEORGIA'S 14TH DISTRICT!The time for action is now!100% Pro-Trump100% Pro-Life100% Pro-GunDeport all illegalsCheap gas and groceriesJOIN TEAM MOORE: https://t.co/jgtK3rpzJV?????? pic.twitter.com/vNoaYXvmB9— Sen. Colton Moore (@realColtonMoore) December 8, 2025 Democrat Candidates  The Democrat candidates on the ballot are Jim Davis, Shawn Harris, and Jonathan Hobbs.   Harris, a retired brigadier general and cattle producer, says his priorities include “making sure people have access to healthcare that’s affordable and allows them to take care of their families,” and supporting farmers.  I am Democrat Shawn Harris. I am a husband, father, retired General and farmer. Today I’m announcing my candidacy to defeat Marjorie Taylor Greene. Her hate and conspiracies do not belong in Congress. Let’s end the chaos together. Retweet and join me in this fight: pic.twitter.com/GIHfoFACIX— Shawn Harris for Congress (@ShawnForGeorgia) June 4, 2025 Greene is the first representative of Georgia’s 14th Congressional District to resign mid-term, prompting special election procedures not often seen in the district.  With early voting underway and more than 20 candidates competing, the election will determine not only Greene’s successor but also how much influence Trump’s endorsement carries among Republican voters in Northwest Georgia.  The post Special Election to Replace Greene May Test Trump’s Grip on Georgia GOP  appeared first on The Daily Signal.

ACLU Looks to Dismantle Ohio Election Integrity Law

As President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans seek to protect election integrity at the federal level with the SAVE America Act, Ohio is fighting its own battle. Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union, representing the League of Women Voters of Ohio and CAIR-Northern Ohio, filed a lawsuit against Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose over its new Ohio election integrity law. SB 293 was signed into law last December by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine and is set to go into effect next month. SB 293 uses citizenship data to purge suspected noncitizens from voter rolls. But the ACLU claims that the law disenfranchises voters if they are purged from the voter rolls without ample time to correct issues. It’s a lawsuit the secretary’s office claims is “frivolous.” “Frivolous and unfounded lawsuits are nothing new for these groups. We are confident the legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly complies with federal law,” Ben Kindel, press secretary for LaRose, told The Daily Signal. Liberal activists at it again…. Must be an election year! pic.twitter.com/mO22Z0Jn3E— Frank LaRose (@FrankLaRose) February 13, 2026 “SB 293 directs Ohio’s secretary of state to systematically check and compare state voter registration data with the citizenship records of the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system. Individuals flagged under these citizenship-check requirements will have their voter registrations cancelled without prior notice or any opportunity to respond. These purges will take place at least once a month, continuing right up through elections,” League of Women Voters Ohio stated in a press release. League of Women Voters Ohio claims the law is “problematic” because data is “outdated,” purging goes up to the eve of elections, and the law lacks “enough protection to ensure wrongly removed voters will be able to fix their registration in time to vote.” “Once a green card holder goes through the naturalization process, they’re a citizen, and thus eligible to vote. But if they don’t update their driver’s license—which are valid for four to eight years, and new citizens aren’t required to update—according to the state of Ohio they still look like a noncitizen,” the Ohio Capital Journal also explained. LaRose posted to X on Wednesday urging voters to act promptly if they’re asked to update or verify their information. Accurate voter rolls matter, and I’m proud that we take it seriously in Ohio.If your board of elections asks you to update or verify your info, it’s important that you respond promptly! If you don’t, it may impact your ability to have your vote count in future elections.…— Frank LaRose (@FrankLaRose) February 18, 2026 “Instead of welcoming new voters who have gone to great lengths to participate in our democracy, SB 293 creates an unnecessary, discriminatory hurdle for naturalized citizens to cast their ballots,” said Jen Miller, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Ohio. “Most Ohioans believe that democracy works best when we can all participate freely and fairly. That’s why we’re headed to court—to ensure that all eligible Ohioans can trust that their registrations won’t be cancelled.” The Daily Signal reached out to plaintiffs and the ACLU but did not receive a response in time. LaRose and League of Women Voters Ohio were involved in a back and forth over X on Thursday over the concern of noncitizens voting in elections. What is the level of noncitizen voting where it would become unacceptable then for you? Are there other crimes you think I should ignore? We’ve removed 1,048 noncitizens from the voter rolls in just the last 18 months. With 10 tie vote contests last year, any one of them… https://t.co/eZDCDk0Cfp— Frank LaRose (@FrankLaRose) February 19, 2026 Honest Elections Project Action’s Vice President Chad Ennis, who provided testimony in favor of SB 293, warned about if plaintiffs should get their way. “This lawsuit by the League of Women Voters and CAIR is another example of the Left attempting to foil any attempt at cleaning voter rolls. When the government has information from official sources that confirm someone is not a citizen, it would be terrible policy to allow that person to remain on the rolls and vote. But that is exactly what the lawsuit seeks to force Ohio to do,” he told The Daily Signal. SB 293 includes other provisions. According to the bill’s text, its aim is “to modify the law governing, voter roll maintenance, provisional voting, the return of absent voter’s ballots, and the membership of the Ohio Election Integrity Commission.” The legislation revises the deadline in which absent voter ballots can be returned, eliminating the grace period of four days after Election Day in which mail-in ballots can arrive. The law was co-sponsored by state Sen. Theresa Gavarone, who stands by SB 293. “I believe in the legislation I sponsored. While this matter is pending, I won’t be commenting further,” she told The Daily Signal. “I trust the Attorney General will be successful and that this law will be fully enacted.” Heritage Action’s Paul Lagemann also testified in support of the bill, focusing on eliminating the grace period. In speaking with The Daily Signal, he shared that voters “should operate under that standard of having your ballot in on time,” stressing that a “consistent standard is the way to go.” “Heritage has models on several of the issues in the bill, including voter ID and including other issues, such as citizen voting,” Lagemann said regarding other provisions in the bill, including those the lawsuit seeks to address. While Congress tries to pass the SAVE America Act, which is regarded by Heritage Action as a “key vote,” Lagemann pointed to how states can also pass their own laws on election integrity. “The beauty of doing [election integrity] in the states is that we can do it quickly, thoroughly, and in a way that is tailored to the state,” he shared. Ohio is currently tied at 11th among states in election integrity, according to Heritage’s Election Integrity Scorecard, along with Mississippi, Texas, and Wisconsin. Democrats Want ICE Agents – But, Not Voters – to be Required to Show IDs, Rep. Steube Says

“Democrats have shut down DHS because they want to endanger our law enforcement officers and ICE agents by making them show ID,” Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) warns regarding the partial government shutdown led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Democrats have caused a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by filibustering a bill to continue funding it – unless the funding bill contains provisions crippling and endangering U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents working to enforce federal immigration law. Democrats are demanding that the funding bill not only provide funding, but also prohibit ICE agents from wearing masks and require them to wear IDs on their uniforms, which would enable violent, pro-illegal immigration activists to identify and target them. “Republican leadership cannot cave to these radicals,” Rep. Steube says in a X.com post: “Democrats have shut down DHS because they want to endanger our law enforcement officers and ICE agents by making them show ID. “These are same people who say voter ID is racist.  Republican leadership cannot cave to these radicals.” “They’re simply putting that there so that these officers can then be doxed,” Rep. Steube explains in video from an interview embedded in his post: “You’ve seen these officers be doxed all across the nation. They’re staying in hotels and all these people show up at the hotel, find out they’re staying there. And, it’s really happening in Minneapolis and some of these Democrat-run cities. No, absolutely not. They shouldn’t have to be forced to have their IDs.” …. “They want ICE agents to have their IDs, but they don’t want voters who vote in our nation’s elections to have IDs and show that they’re actually citizens of our country to vote in our elections.” “The hypocrisy is beyond the pale,” Rep. Steube says. Democrats have shut down DHS because they want to endanger our law enforcement officers and ICE agents by making them show ID. These are same people who say voter ID is racist. Republican leadership cannot cave to these radicals. pic.twitter.com/dfgOiCFJS1 — Congressman Greg Steube (@RepGregSteube) February 19, 2026   “@ChuckSchumer thinks protecting federal elections is racist,” Steube says in a separate post on the Senate Democrats’ opposition to Republicans’ SAVE Act requiring voter ID: “This is exactly why the Senate needs to nuke the filibuster. If the SAVE Act is ‘Jim Crow 2.0,’ then so is: - Boarding a plane - Buying alcohol - Cashing a check at a bank - Picking up prescription medication The list goes on and on. 84% of Americans support voter ID. End the filibuster. Pass the SAVE Act.” The SAVE Act has passed the House and, like the DHS funding bill, is being held up in the Senate by a Democrat filibuster. .@ChuckSchumer thinks protecting federal elections is racist. Is Trump targeting Talarico? Colbert’s lie exposed

When late-night host Stephen Colbert told viewers CBS wouldn’t air his interview with Texas Democrat James Talarico due to FCC pressure from President Trump, the segment’s ratings went through the roof on YouTube. The problem with this is that while Talarico championed their forbidden interview, it turned out that Trump had nothing to do with the FCC pressure.“He is getting a lot of good press in this moment. This quote-unquote ‘forbidden’ interview that he had with Stephen Colbert is working really well for him,” BlazeTV host Allie Beth Stuckey says on “Relatable.”“On Monday night, February 16, during a segment of 'The Late Show,' Stephen Colbert told his audience that the show’s parent company, CBS, was stopping him from airing this pre-recorded interview that he had done with Talarico, due to pressure from the FCC,” she explains.Colbert then pointed his audience to YouTube to watch the interview.“So saying, ‘This is a big forbidden interview. Trump doesn’t want you to see this,’ it’s brilliant marketing. Both in the actual interview and in the promotion afterward, Colbert and Talarico reinforced that narrative, saying that, ‘Hey, Trump, really, really, doesn’t want you to hear what this guy has to say,’” Stuckey says.“This is the party that ran against cancel culture, and now they’re trying to control what we watch, what we say, what we read. And this is the most dangerous kind of cancel culture — the kind that comes from the top. They went after ‘The View’ because I went on there. They went after Jimmy Kimmel for telling a joke they didn’t like. They went after you for telling the truth about Paramount’s bribe to Donald Trump,” Talarico said in the “forbidden” interview with Colbert. And in a post on X, Talarico wrote, “This is the interview Donald Trump didn’t want you to see. His FCC refused to air my interview with Stephen Colbert. Trump is worried we’re about to flip Texas.”“The problem is it’s fiction,” Stuckey comments. “It’s not true. The FCC — what they’re doing — this has nothing to do with Trump. They are enforcing a rule that has existed for a long time — that’s been around for almost a century — that says that you have to give equal airtime to a politician who is running, to their opponent.”“Colbert and Talarico made it sound like the Trump administration is controlling free speech, but what the FCC is actually doing is just encouraging the networks — requiring that the networks actually give equal opportunity to all candidates,” she explains.“So in this case, it’s not that the FCC is actually saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got to get Ken Paxton or another Republican on here.’ They’re saying in this case that he needs to have Jasmine Crockett on and Jasmine Crockett needs to have an equivalent time to also promote her campaign,” she continues.“So this doesn’t even really have to do with Republican versus Democrat,” she adds.Want more from Allie Beth Stuckey? To enjoy more of Allie’s upbeat and in-depth coverage of culture, news, and theology from a Christian, conservative perspective, subscribe to BlazeTV — the largest multi-platform network of voices who love America, defend the Constitution, and live the American dream.

Rep. Jayapal pushes 'Transgender Bill of Rights' to oppose 'cruelty' of Trump policies

Two Democrat members of Congress are pushing legislation that would enact a "Bill of Rights" for transgender-identifying people.Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) said the bill would combat the "cruelty" of policies of the Trump administration and other Republicans.'She's a toxic person who is damaging our country.' "The resolution creates a comprehensive framework to protect trans and nonbinary Americans from discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression," read a press release about the bill. The bill would change the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in order to "explicitly include gender identity and sex characteristics" and add protections in federal education laws for trans-identifying students. It would also reinforce the right of transgender-identifying people to access health care for their gender identity and would ban "conversion therapy."The bill was widely opposed and ridiculed by many on social media."What civil rights do ADULT trans people currently lack?! This is just a slippery slope to reach the kids. Absolutely not," read one response."We don't need her demanding a bill of rights for transgender people. She's a toxic person who is damaging our country," wrote another critic."The bill of rights is the same for all Americans regardless of race or gender. There is no special treatment for gender confusion," said another X user."The Dems cannot define a woman, but they can do this!?!?! Now you know this is just made up to have some undermining influence on America’s history!" wrote another detractor.Jayapal has said previously that she is the "proud mother of a transgender child."RELATED: USA Today obliterated online over bizarre claim about transgender athletes Rep. Sara Jacobs (D) of California also issued a statement in favor of the bill.“We need protections for the transgender and nonbinary communities at the federal level, because no one should live in fear of being who they are," she wrote. "I’m so proud to co-lead the Transgender Bill of Rights as proof of our commitment to protect the health, safety, and well-being of trans people in this country. To the trans community: We see you, and we will not stop until you can live freely and authentically."Democrats are unlikely to gain support for the bill, as both houses of Congress are controlled by Republicans, but their chances may improve if they make enough gains in the midterm elections. However, the bill would still need to be signed by the president, which is very unlikely.Like Blaze News? Archaeologists Have Uncovered A Siberian Ice Mummy Who Underwent Jaw Surgery 2,500 Years Ago

Novosibirsk State University Press ServiceIt’s unknown what caused this Pazyryk woman’s jaw injury 2,500 years ago, but the surgery performed to repair it may be the first example of such an operation in history. In 1994, archaeologists excavated a small burial site on the Ukok Plateau, a grassland located at the border of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. There, they unearthed several bodies, including the partially mummified corpse of a woman from the ancient Pazyryk culture who was between the ages of 25 and 30 when she died roughly 2,500 years ago. At the time, scientists didn’t notice anything remarkable about the young woman. Now, however, they’ve taken CT scans of her skull — and found a “primitive prosthetic” within her mandible that may represent the earliest example of jaw surgery in history. The Unexpected Discovery Of An Ancient Pazyryk Burial In The Siberian Permafrost The Pazyryk culture thrived in Siberia, the Altai Mountains, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia between the sixth and third centuries B.C.E. These nomadic people traveled through the region’s grasslands, and their practice of burying their dead in the permafrost has preserved many of their artifacts — and their bodies, including that of the famous “Siberian Ice Maiden.” But when another Pazyryk woman’s remains were uncovered in the same area roughly three decades ago, archaeologists didn’t expect to learn much from them at first. She’d been buried on a wooden bed in a sleeping position, but there were no grave goods found alongside her except for a wig, which was typical of the Pazyryk culture. Novosibirsk State University Press ServiceThe Pazyryk woman was found buried on this wooden bed in 1994. The permafrost had preserved part of the woman’s head, but scientists didn’t initially notice her injured jaw. As Natalia Polosmak, the chief researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted in a statement released by Russia’s Novosibirsk State University, “This mummified patch of skin on the deceased’s skull made anthropological research impossible, but we wanted to learn as much as possible about the woman, and her skull was all we had left.” So, scientists recently decided to perform a CT scan on the remains to see what was beneath the mummified skin. Vladimir Kanygin, the head of the laboratory where the analysis was performed, said in the university’s statement, “The CT scanner allowed us to virtually ‘remove’ these coverings and create an accurate digital and then physical 3D model of the skull, making it accessible for detailed anthropological analysis.” What the researchers found shocked them. Uncovering Astonishing Evidence Of 2,500-Year-Old Jaw Surgery Scientists first noticed that the Pazyryk woman’s right mandible had been displaced, with her temporomandibular joint destroyed and her lateral ligament torn. She may have been thrown from a horse or fallen from a significant height, and the injury would have left her unable to chew or speak. Such significant trauma would seemingly have meant certain death 2,500 years ago, but the Pazyryk people were fairly advanced for their time in terms of medicine. Scientists have long known that they practiced cranial trepanation, or drilling holes in the skull to release pressure or treat injuries. However, the evidence of surgical intervention that researchers discovered in the woman’s skull was groundbreaking. Two thin canals were drilled into her mandible and converged at a right angle. An elastic material, likely horse hair or an animal tendon, was then strung through the holes, connecting her damaged jawbone. “It is possible that we have discovered evidence of such a surgical procedure for the first time,” said Andrey Letyagin, a professor and physician with the Russian Academy of Sciences. “This primitive prosthetic held the articular surfaces together and allowed the patient to move her jaw. The joint functioned, but she still couldn’t chew food on the injured side due to severe pain.” Novosibirsk State University Press ServiceThe mummified skin covering the woman’s skull initially concealed her jaw injury. Indeed, evidence of extensive wear on the molars of the uninjured side of the woman’s face, in addition to healing bone within the drilled canals, indicate that she survived the surgery and lived for at least several months afterward. But why did the Pazyryk people go to such lengths to save this woman’s life? Aside from the wooden bed she was buried on — which would have been expensive to make due to the lack of trees on the Ukok Plateau — there were no elaborate grave goods interred alongside her that would suggest she was an elite member of society. However, as Polosmak noted, “Every Pazyryk resident possessed certain essential, and perhaps even unique, qualities and talents… In this society, everyone was valued in life simply for their existence, and honored after death.” Scientists are now hoping that CT scans can reveal even more about both the Pazyryk culture and other ancient civilizations. Kanygin lauded the technology, saying, “It allowed us not only to diagnose the injury but also to reconstruct the results of a complex surgical intervention performed in ancient times, transforming a single find into detailed evidence of the high level of medical knowledge of the Pazyryk culture.” After reading about the evidence of jaw surgery discovered on a 2,500-year-old skull found in Russia, look through these before-and-after photos from the early days of plastic surgery. Then, go inside the grisly history of “phossy jaw,” the deadly condition that plagued “matchstick girls” in the 19th century.
