WATCH: Chris Stapleton Blows The Roof Off With “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” Cover In 2019
SHEESH.
Chris Stapleton fans know that the Kentucky native has a set of pipes that can set a room on fire, and his talent is among the best of our generation. Chris Stapleton was a talented songwriter since the early days of his career, penning many number-one country hits that we know and love today, but he did not break out onto the scene as a solo artist until 2015.
In May of 2015, Chris Stapleton released his debut record, Traveller, which would go on to redefine the genre of country music as we know it today. It initially charted at #2 on the country charts but sold only 27,000 copies… not exactly a smashing debut for the superstar we now know Chris to be. BUT November rolled around, and Stapleton took the stage alongside Justin Timberlake at the CMA Awards. Chris Stapleton became an overnight sensation, and that performance goes down in history as the moment that ended the bro country era of country music.
Stapleton is now an 11x Grammy Award-winning artist, 19x CMA Award-winning artist, with 8 Male Vocalist of the Year honors to his name, and a 15x ACM Award recipient. At last year’s CMA Awards, Luke Combs’ reaction to the announcement that it was his 8th Male Vocalist of the Year award was the most appropriate reaction I’ve ever seen on live television.

Stapleton is now a mainstay in country music, blending country and honky tonk roots with soulful lyrical delivery. In fact, Stapleton has soul unlike many other artists in the genre. Don’t believe me? Take a seat and listen up.
Back in 2019, 4 years after Traveller took off, Stapleton teamed up with the Atlanta-founded soul-pop group The Shadowboxers to lay down some classic soul music. That night on stage, the three blew the roof off a performance of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”
“It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” is a James Brown classic. The tune highlighting the advancements men have made in society was penned by James Brown and Betty Jean Newsome and recorded in New York in 1966. The lyrics, while initially seeming to be a man-power song, take a turn during the chorus to highlight that without a powerful woman in the mix, the world is nothing.
“This is a man’s worldBut it wouldn’t be nothing, nothingWithout a woman or a girlOh, oh, how a man needs a womanMan got to have a womanHe needs a woman or a girlHe needs a womanMan make everything he canBut a woman makes a better man…”
The small venue knew what was about to go down after the opening horn intro, and as soon as Stapleton belted out the first notes, hoots and hollers filled the room. Stapleton blows the absolute roof off the place while delivering the lyrics, keeping a raspy grit in his vocals that adds another layer of depth to his worlds.
The whole time Stapleton is at the microphone, the band is taken aback in awe of his talent. You can tell they are doing their best to focus on playing, but it feels as if they wish they were in the audience experiencing the greatness of this performance with the concertgoers.
I’m confident that James Brown himself would give this cover a standing ovation. Check it out:
