After a weekend in which at least 52 people were shot and seven died in his city, Chicago Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson shouted to the crowd at a Labor Day Rally that they had to defend themselves from President Donald Trump’s intention to clean things up. On August 22, President Trump signaled he might intervene in Chicago as he had in Washington, D.C., telling reporters, “I think Chicago will be our next. … And then we’ll help with New York.” The following day, The Washington Post reported that the Pentagon had been planning a military deployment to Chicago for weeks. On August 26, Trump escalated his rhetoric, declaring, “Everybody knows Chicago is a hellhole right now.” Under Johnson, Chicago experienced 572 homicides in 2024, making it the deadliest U.S. city by total homicides for the 13th consecutive year. “No federal troops in the city of Chicago,” Johnson yelled to the crowd. “No militarized force in the city of Chicago. We’re going to defend our democracy in the city of Chicago. We’re going to protect the humanity of every single person in the city of Chicago. And we got the baddest freaking labor movement in the city of Chicago, birthed right here.” Johnson then threatened, “We’re gonna take this fight across America but we gotta defend our home front first.” He then launched into a paean to the labor movement and DEI rhetoric, yelling: The best way we can defend our home front is to make sure that every single worker has a livable wage. That’s why we abolished the sub-minimum wage in Chicago for brown and black women. They get raises on top of their tips. This is the city of Chicago, where we have given paid time off for over a million workers, ten days off, the biggest city in America to ever do it. This is the labor movement, you all, on pace to build more affordable units, a teachers’ contract that protects black women, a teachers’ contract that protects LGBTQ community, the teacher contract that protects immigrants. This is the greatest freaking city in the world. We’re Chi-town. “Now look, there are some people that have doubts in the labor movement. There are some people who believe that we don’t have the power to beat authoritarianism. But I’m also a history teacher as well. We have stood up for the interests of workers before and we will do it again, and no matter what comes from the White House, Chicago will always be a labor town. Are you with me, Chicago?” he declared. After having mentioned he had been a history teacher, he promptly falsified history, saying, “Are you prepared to defend this land, this land that was built by slaves, a land that was built by indigenous people, a land that was built by workers, are you prepared to defend this land? The people, united, will always prevail.” He turned back to Trump: “I need you all to stand firm, to stand strong if this president decides to continue to break this Constitution, it’s gonna be the labor movement that stitches it back together, the labor movement that brings black folks, white folks, Asians; it brings brown folks together. This is a city that said, ‘Keep hope alive,’ the city that birthed, ‘Yes we can,’ and the city that will defend this country.” On Tuesday, Trump wrote on Truth Social: At least 54 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, 8 people were killed. Former NFL coaching icon Bill Belichick’s leap to college football got off to a hot start on Monday night, but it quickly devolved into an embarrassment as his North Carolina Tar Heels were stomped in front of a home crowd by Texas Christian University. Belichick and the Tar Heels were among college football’s media darlings leading up to the opening week. The game attracted nationwide attention with a primetime slot on ESPN, and UNC legends Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor, and Roy Williams were all in attendance to see Belichick coach his first game since parting ways with the New England Patriots in January 2024. North Carolina got the ball first and came out hot, driving 83 yards down the field in just seven plays and opening up the game with a 7-0 lead. The drive had the Chapel Hill crowd rocking, but the excitement only lasted for a few minutes. At the end of the first quarter, TCU scored to tie the game, and North Carolina’s offense began sputtering. TCU closed out the first half by kicking two field goals and picking off UNC quarterback Gio Lopez and returning it for a touchdown. UNC’s collapse continued into the second half as Belichick’s defense — coached by his son, Steve — was embarrassed multiple times when TCU’s running backs sprinted past defenders for long scoring plays. Fans began their mass exodus from Kenan Memorial Stadium in the third quarter after TCU’s defense struck again with a strip sack returned for a touchdown. Belichick’s college debut was officially spoiled with more than 18 minutes of game time remaining. By the end of the third quarter, the Tar Heels were down 41-14, and the team gave up another touchdown in the fourth quarter, setting a school record for points allowed in a season opener. It was also the most points ever surrendered by a Belichick-coached team. Belichick, who won six Super Bowls with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots between 2000 and 2023, said the Tar Heels have a lot to improve on, but added that he believes his team is a “lot better than that.” He also praised TCU’s performance. “They were clearly the better team tonight,” Belichick said. “They deserved to win and they did it decisively.” On the other sideline, the TCU Horned Frogs believe they proved a point by quickly turning the attention away from Belichick and onto themselves. “We wanted this game to be about us, and it was,” said TCU coach Sonny Dykes, according to ESPN. “I think we all felt a little disrespected,” he added. “There was a lot of conversation about this game and none of it was about us.”

Rapper Snoop Dogg did not apologize for criticizing a gay storyline in the Disney film “Lightyear,” his rep said. Rumors swirled that the recording artist was walking back his previous statement after a posted reply appeared on Instagram, which came from Snoop’s verified Instagram account. A video clip shared to Hollywood Unlocked included actress TS Madison discussing the controversy.  The posted comment on the video from Snoop’s verified account said, “I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons. All my gay friends [know] what’s up, they been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-yr-old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect,” it said. Instagram However, according to multiple outlets, Snoop’s representative denies that the rapper made the apology himself, and also stated that no one on his team has admitted to doing so either. It’s unclear how the comment was posted from his verified account. The 53-year-old recording artist, whose legal name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., sparked backlash from LGBT activists due to his remarks during an appearance on a recent episode of the “It’s Giving” podcast, as The Daily Wire previously reported. “What you see is what you see, and they’re putting it everywhere,” Snoop said before referencing the 2022 Disney film “Lightyear,” which featured a same-sex couple.  “They’re like, ‘She had a baby with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’” he went on. The rapper said he thought,” ‘Oh sh**, I didn’t come in for this sh**. I just came to watch the g**damn movie.’” But his grandson wouldn’t let it go, and said,”’ They just said, she and she had a baby … they’re both women. How does she have a baby?’”  Snoop said the whole thing “f***ed me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. I created the LIGHTYEAR lesbians,” she wrote in a statement on Instagram. “As we wrote early versions of what became LIGHTYEAR, a key character needed a partner, and it was so natural to write ‘she’ instead of ‘he.’ As small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have. Small line, big deal. I was elated that they kept it,” Gunderson went on.  “I’m proud of it. To infinity. Love is love… I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of sh** for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists,” she concluded. “Lightyear” caused a controversy leading up to its release due to the inclusion of a same-sex kiss, which was initially edited out, then restored in response to Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Bill, dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” by several legacy media outlets and leftists. The film earned a paltry $226.4 million against a $200 million budget, meaning it likely lost money after factoring in marketing and other expenses.

Eric Schmitt’s “The Last Line of Defense” and MSNBC host Rachel Maddow’s “Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism.”  “Lions & Scavengers” was written following Hamas’ horrific attacks on innocent Israelis on October 7, 2023. Not only did this attack remind the world of the barbarity of radical Islamic terrorism, but it also shone a light on a deeply troubling and growing problem in the West.  After the October 7 attack on Israel, Shapiro spent the next year traveling the globe, visiting Auschwitz alongside Elon Musk, flying to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to meet with newly elected president Javier Milei, and speaking at Oxford University in England. It was what he saw on the streets of London that affected him most. “Just last weekend, London saw a massive river of protesters,” writes Shapiro in the book. “Hundreds of thousands strong, marching with their banners unfurled: the banners of terrorist groups and of communists and of transgender activists, gathered together to revolt against the civilization that has given them their rights and their prosperity and their power.” In his book, Shapiro lays out how a new form of “Scavenger” is on the prowl, and he insists that the issue is larger than antisemitism and attacks against Jews.  “This is something different. The 59-year-old star also described America as a “sh** show.” “It’s liberating to be done,” Wright told The Times of London. “Be done with searching, looking and getting 60% of what you wanted.” “I love being in this country,” the Texas native said of moving to the coast of England. “There’s a freedom of self here. People are so kind. They’re living. They’re not in the car in traffic, panicked on a phone call, eating a sandwich. That’s most of America. Everything’s rush, competition and speed.” The Golden Globe winner added, “Everyone’s building a huge house, and I’m just done with all that — I love the quiet. And I’ve met my person. Finally.” Wright, who has been married three times before, moved to the U.K. with her current boyfriend, architect Henry Smith. The actress was married to outspoken leftist activist Sean Penn from 1996 until 2010. She is one of several celebrities to leave the United States since Trump was elected president. Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Rosie O’Donnell, and Richard Gere are just some of the stars to leave.  While Wright didn’t mention politics specifically while discussing her departure from the U.S., other celebrities were more explicit about their reason for leaving. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” comedian Degeneres said of moving away permanently post-election. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’” O’Donnell said she moved to Ireland to protect her trans-identifying child.  “I miss many things about life there at home, and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country,” the comedian said after her move overseas earlier this year. “And when, you know, it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back. It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know,” she added.

A federal judge on Tuesday said that President Donald Trump broke the law by deploying the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles County amid violent protests targeting immigration enforcement operations.  Judge Charles Breyer, the younger brother of former liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, issued a ruling that Trump was using the military to enforce domestic law in violation of federal law. The Trump administration had argued that the deployment of about 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to Los Angeles was only to protect federal property and personnel.  “Nevertheless, at Defendants’ orders and contrary to Congress’s explicit instruction, federal troops executed the laws,” wrote Breyer, a Clinton-appointed judge. “The evidence at trial established that Defendants systematically used armed soldiers (whose identity was often obscured by protective armor) and military vehicles to set up protective perimeters and traffic blockades, engage in crowd control, and otherwise demonstrate a military presence in and around Los Angeles.” The specific law that Breyer said Trump violated was the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the use of the military to enforce domestic law.  Breyer’s order, which takes effect in 10 days, blocks Trump from using the approximately 300 National Guard troops left in Los Angeles from “engaging in arrests, apprehensions, searches, seizures, security patrols, traffic control, crowd control, riot control, evidence collection, interrogation, or acting as informants, unless and until Defendants satisfy the requirements of a valid constitutional or statutory exception.” The case came to Breyer after California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom sued Trump. “DONALD TRUMP LOSES AGAIN,” Newsom posted on X. “The courts agree — his militarization of our streets and use of the military against US citizens is ILLEGAL.” Responding to the ruling, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli said that Breyer’s decision was misleading and that the National Guard would not be leaving Los Angeles.  “The military will remain in Los Angeles,” he wrote on X. “This is a false narrative and a misleading injunction. The military has never engaged in direct law enforcement operations here in LA. They protect our federal employees our properties so our federal agents can safely enforce federal laws in the face of the thugs being unleashed and encouraged by state and local politicians.” A previous decision from Breyer blocking Trump from taking control of the National Guard from Newsom was overturned by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. That court agreed with the Trump administration that the National Guard was only being used to protect federal property and personnel.
