President Donald Trump raged Thursday morning that America’s allies fail to understand “anything unless they have pressure placed upon them,” once again taking aim at NATO after his meeting with the alliance’s secretary-general. Trump targeted NATO in two social media posts shortly after his Wednesday meeting at the White House with NATO chief Mark Rutte, who traveled to Washington, D.C., following Trump’s renewed threats to pull the United States from the alliance. “NATO WASN’T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON’T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN,” Trump wrote in a social media post on Wednesday evening. “REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!!” Trump ripped NATO again Thursday morning, posting, “None of these people, including our own, very disappointing, NATO, understood anything unless they have pressure placed upon them!!!” Trump’s frustration with NATO has been building for months, particularly after several alliance members pushed back on his idea to acquire Greenland. Tensions have intensified more recently as some allies have rejected the president’s calls to back U.S. efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Rutte met with Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday to discuss the alliance and Europe’s stance on the Iran war. “He is clearly disappointed with many NATO allies, and I can see his point,” Rutte told CNN after the meeting. Some NATO members — including the United Kingdom, France, and Spain — initially blocked U.S. aircraft from using their military bases for offensive strikes during “Operation Epic Fury.” The U.K. and France later allowed the United States limited use of bases for defensive purposes only, while Spain has remained a vocal opponent of the U.S. military operation. “The large majority, including France, of European nations, has been doing what they committed they would do in a case like this,” Rutte said. “So Europe as a platform of power projection for the United States was in full play over the last six weeks. And yes, it is true that not all European nations lived up to those commitments, and I totally understand that [Trump] is disappointed about it.” Rutte has been one of Trump’s biggest cheerleaders on the world stage in recent months and has repeatedly praised the U.S. president for forcing European nations to increase defense spending. The NATO secretary-general told CNN, “This was a meeting between friends because we like each other. I really admire his leadership … and NATO allies are with him when it comes to taking out, degrading the ballistic missile capacity of the Iranians.” “The whole world is safer by this president degrading those capabilities,” Rutte added. The United States is, by far, the largest financial supporter of NATO, covering more than 60% of the alliance’s defense spending, according to the Atlantic Council. Last year, the United States spent roughly $980 billion on NATO’s defense. Amid Trump’s pressure and repeated threats to withdraw from NATO, member states have ramped up their defense spending commitments. At last year’s NATO summit, allies agreed to increase their military spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.

Despite a ride invite waitlist that’s “tens of thousands” of people long, I was lucky enough to snag an exclusive ride-along with Waymo spokesperson Mark Lewis in downtown Music City.  Did I imagine myself dying alone in a fiery crash? Yes. But after a stellar spin around town, I do declare that autonomous car life is finer than frog hair, y’all. (Hoping that sounded slightly Southern.) You might even call it a “quiet luxury” if you were Meghan Markle trying to sell scented candles. “We know for a new rider that this can sometimes be an anxious experience,” Lewis reassured me as we buckled up to the soothing sounds of Waymo entrance music. “We really want to get you in the right mindset … We’re gonna take care of you,” I screamed as we began our 5 mph journey to the nearest stop sign like I was on a roller coaster. And each car is outfitted with the kind of tech that makes the flying cars of “The Jetsons” feel adorably low-budget. Boasting a 92% reduction in overall crashes compared to human drivers, the fully autonomous Waymo Driver, as it’s called, has clocked more hours on the road than a human ever could. “It’s the most experienced driver around,” Lewis told me. “The Waymo Driver drives more than seven lifetimes of a human driver in a week.” All in, it’s analyzed 170 million miles of autonomous driving, and counting. Yes, there are stories floating around about Waymo cars zigzagging through streets, missing stop signs, and causing traffic jams, along with a few reported violations of regional school bus laws. Since Google first started testing its self-driving car in 2009, Waymo vehicles have been involved in two fatal collisions caused by drivers of other cars. While distracted human driving results in a fatality every 2.5 hours, the Waymo Driver has yet to be responsible for any deaths. Maybe it has one up on the rest of us when it comes to navigating without texting or opening up a bag of chips for the road. Waymo is “13 times safer than a human driver when it comes to serious accidents or worse,” Lewis says. Beyond its spotless record, Waymo aims to help users thrive, providing a resource for those in need of reliable transportation. “People with disabilities, people with service animals that may need more time to board,” utilize partnerships that Waymo forms in each city, Lewis noted. In Nashville, the company partners with the National Federation of The Blind and AgeWell to offer “a vehicle that is dependable, that shows up exactly when it says, that will wait and be patient with you … It’s really powerful that we can serve those communities.” It’s also a super great option for bachelorettes who partied too hard on Broadway. Woo!  I also enjoyed not having to enter the shame spiral involved in choosing the gender of my driver, or weighing whether I should care about offsetting my carbon footprint enough to pay more for it, like other ride-shares. Waymo’s all-electric fleet leaves zero emissions on the street. And if you have a question, you can press the support button to talk with a human on the other end. Your chariot — a sleek Jaguar I-PACE SUV — awaits. And new vehicles are slated to join the lineup (like the Waymo Ojai that looks like a minivan and offers more leg room, and the Hyundai Ioniq). While Waymo’s rates used to be significantly higher than those of Uber or Lyft, recent numbers show a difference of just a few bucks, as Waymo prices drop and other rideshares rise. I’d gladly pay an extra $2 to eliminate an awkward conversation about my driver’s male modeling side-hustle on the way to the airport. Make that $20. I was daydreaming about Waymo long after I watched it drive off into the sunset to pick up its next guest. Waymo might stand for “a new way forward in mobility,” but if I still had my Trapper Keeper from high school, I would be scribbling “Lauren + Waymo” with bubble hearts on the cover. Further solidifying my crush, I got my official Waymo invite the next day. “Where to, Lauren?” it asked, prompting me to set the soundtrack for my next Nashville adventure. (Swoon!)  Still hesitant to jump into a car with “no driver”? I promise the journey’s just as fun as the destination. Now that Waymo’s in Nashville, and almost certainly coming to a city near you, all you have to do is download the app and enjoy the ride.

A Pakistani national charged with plotting an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack on a Jewish center in New York City pleaded guilty on Wednesday, federal prosecutors said. Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 21-year-old Pakistani citizen living in Canada, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. Khan was arrested while attempting to illegally enter the United States through the northern border. He “planned to inflict significant casualties,” according to the Department of Justice. “Khan planned a mass shooting at a Jewish center in New York City, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attacks, with the explicit goal of killing as many Jews as possible,” Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg said. Khan considered Brooklyn’s large Jewish population as the “perfect” venue for his attack, authorities said, and claimed his plan could have resulted in the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil since September 11. “Muhammad Shahzeb Khan intended to come to New York City and carry out an ISIS-inspired act of terror against our city’s Jewish community,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said. “The NYPD, in close coordination with our federal partners, was able to stop this dangerous plot before it could become a devastating attack.” A Pakistani Muslim migrant named Muhammad Shahzeb Khan has been extradited to the U.S. from Canada after he was indicted for allegedly planning an ISIS mass shooting targeting a Jewish community center in New York City. pic.twitter.com/GVhAGuC8Q0 — Andy Ngo (@MrAndyNgo) June 11, 2025 Investigators began tracking Khan in November 2023 after he posted ISIS propaganda videos on social media and openly expressed support for the terror group, according to authorities. Prosecutors said Khan began plotting terrorist attacks in the United States, sharing specific details with two individuals he didn’t know were undercover law enforcement officers. During those exchanges, Khan told an undercover officer he had a U.S.-based associate and planned to use AR-style assault rifles in an unidentified city to “target Israeli Jewish chabads,” prosecutors said. About a year later, authorities say Khan shifted his focus to a Jewish religious center in Brooklyn, hoping to carry out his attack around the first anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7 terror attacks against Israel. On social media, Khan encouraged what he believed were co-conspirators to acquire AR-style rifles and hunting knives to “slit their throats.” A month before the planned attack, Khan attempted to cross the U.S.-Canada border with the help of a human smuggler. Authorities arrested Khan near Ormstown, Canada, approximately 12 miles from the border. Khan is set to be sentenced on August 12.

He also faces up to 40 years in prison
