5 Surprising Reasons Roman Gladiators Were the Original WWE Stars

A retiarius stabs at a secutor with his trident in this mosaic from the villa at Nennig, Germany, c. 2nd–3rd century AD   Long before today’s WWE stars stepped through the fireworks at WrestleMania and flexed for huge crowds at places like Madison Square Garden, another group of entertainers was already getting people excited and staging big dramatic fights centuries ago. Called gladiators, they emerged in ancient Rome as early as 264 BC. While early matches simply took place in market squares, gladiators eventually went on to fight in grand arenas like the Colosseum. Interestingly, the bloody shows in the Roman arena weren’t really all that different from the showmanship displayed in the WWE ring today.   Like WWE Stars, They Were Popular Marble statue of young Nero, 50-54 CE, Louvre Museum, Paris   Roman gladiator shows gave emperors and rich patrons a chance to display their wealth to the public, celebrate military victories, welcome distinguished guests, or simply distract people from political issues and economic hardships. But it was the fighters themselves who became the true stars of the spectacle. Fans in Rome got so fixated on gladiators that they wrote their names on walls all over the city. Gladiator-themed merchandise sold extremely well as a result.   Spiculus, a popular gladiator in the 1st century AD, for example, became a favorite of the Emperor Nero. Nero gave Spiculus land and even palaces. Gladiators were also seen as attractive figures and were basically the heartthrobs of their era. Some people even thought that the blood of a gladiator had properties that cured severe seizures.   Still on the fanfare, old records show that a gladiator named Hermes (a stage name borrowed from Greek mythology) received massive praise from the Roman poet Martial, who wrote an entire poem about his great skills. Every single line of the poem began with the name Hermes. Martial described him as a very slick fighter with amazing technique. This shows that modern celebrity culture has deep historical origins.   They Had Managers A large mosaic depicting various types of gladiators along with their names (the Greek letter theta denotes those who had died), 4th century CE, via the Villa Borghese Entrance Hall, Rome   Initially, gladiators were mainly criminals and prisoners of war, but over time, gladiatorial fighting turned into a real job instead of just a punishment, and they needed constant support. Like WWE wrestlers today, this was provided by managers known as lanistae. The managers would train, feed, and provide medical care for their gladiators, teach them combat techniques, and shape them into fighters that crowds wanted to pay to see.   Due to the evolution of the sport, it didn’t make sense to let popular fighters go into the arena to die as gladiators were expensive to train. As such, strict rules were enacted and referees were used to stop fights. Beaten fighters could surrender and the event sponsor or the crowd would often choose to spare his life. The strategy allowed popular fighters to have longer careers and generate more revenue for the schools.   Their Fights Were More Show Than Killing Combat of Gladiators, etching by Antonio Fantuzzi, 1540-1545. Source: British Museum   Most gladiator fighters only battled 2 to 3 times a year, and only about 10 to 20 percent of them died in matches, even though people think they always fought to the death. According to archaeological findings, gladiator fighting turned into more of a martial art around the start of the 1st century. To excite the crowds in the arena, the fighters would show off their impressive fighting skills. Modern pro wrestling like WWE has borrowed some elements from gladiator matches, such as the huge dramatic entrances.   They Were Early Influencers Roman mosaic depicting the gladiatorial combat, 3rd century CE, National Archaeological Museum, Madrid   Even though gladiators were viewed as outcasts or slaves by the law and were strictly banned from voting or running for public office, they were famous across the empire. Drawn in by the urge to fight and the promise of fame, many free men also signed up with gladiator schools on purpose, hoping to win glory and prizes. These freelance fighters were often from poor backgrounds or ex-soldiers who were good at fighting. Others were high-class patricians, knights, and even senators who wanted to show off their fighting skills.   They Had Stage Names and Unique Fighting Styles Roman glassware decorated with a gladiator, dated 52–125 AD and found at Begram, Afghanistan, a royal city of the Kushan Empire where, according to Warwick Ball, it was likely on its way to Han dynasty China via the Silk Road along with other glass items. Source: Wikipedia   In the Roman Imperial times, there were many kinds of fighters. Each had a different name and used certain weapons and fighting techniques. Most were heavily armed and wore helmets. These were the hoplomachus, murmillo, provocator, thrax, and secutor. Plus, there was the eques, who only fought other eques since the fight started on horseback. The retiarius were lightly armed with a net and trident and wore no helmets. The WWE also features fighters with unique names and fighting techniques.

Georgetown Professor Under Fire For ‘Absurdly Evil’ Reaction To Concerns About Islamic Violence

It takes a lot for a professor at a prestigious American university to stand out among a sea of far-left ideologues. But one Georgetown University Chair of Islamic Civilization Jonathan AC Brown has had a few such notable outbursts during his career. Most recently, he took a callous approach to social media concerns about a rise in sexual assaults perpetrated by Islamic immigrants across the United Kingdom. As WJLA reported: “Get over it.” That reply from Brown’s now-deleted X account came in response to a British member of Parliament suggesting the U.K. needs to come to terms with the fact that the grooming and rape of young girls was conducted by groups identified as muslim men. Critics blasted Brown’s post as dismissive, inflammatory, and deeply insensitive. The rape gang story exploded in the media last year, and repercussions are still being felt across British society. Reports claim much of the cover-up and lack of prosecutions has been blamed on official fear of being labeled racist for targeting muslim suspects in these cases. A short time later, another X account called Brown’s reply “absurdly evil,” to which Brown’s account again replied, “Get Over It”. Brown’s remarks were widely denounced across social media: See the pompous a*shole wearing the ascot? That's Professor Jonathan AC Brown of Georgetown University. He teaches Islamic Studies, that is, when he's not on paid leave for over 200 days for wishing U.S. soldiers would be bombed by the Iranian regime. He's openly supported… pic.twitter.com/rlm81y6Fu5 — NizNellie3 (@NizNellie3) April 2, 2026 Here’s the full text of the post above: See the pompous a*shole wearing the ascot? That’s Professor Jonathan AC Brown of Georgetown University. He teaches Islamic Studies, that is, when he’s not on paid leave for over 200 days for wishing U.S. soldiers would be bombed by the Iranian regime. He’s openly supported Hamas and claims no Israeli women were raped on Oct 7. During a discussion online about Islamic rape gangs in the UK, he commented, “get over it.” Let me say that again: tens of thousands of young girls have been raped by Islamic savages in the UK, and the professor’s response was, “get over it.” How many female students at Georgetown have suffered sexual abuse or rape? How many are in his classes? Now imagine he’s wearing a MAGA hat and said the same thing about, say… victims of Jeffrey Epstein. Do you think he’d have a job by 5:00? Where is our Education Secretary? Will Georgetown still receive $640 million in federal funding? Will Americans be fleeced to fund this terrorist-loving P.O.S.? Why is GT still employing the professor who supports violation of human rights, promoted beating and enslaving women, and defends rapes? — TLogic (@TLogic13) April 2, 2026 Jonathan Brown, a Professor at @Georgetown, responded to a post calling out Islamic rape gangs in the UK, saying, "Get over it." He deleted the comment, but then DOUBLED DOWN using the SAME disgusting response when another user called him out. Do you support this @Georgetown? pic.twitter.com/snti5Yo1F4 — Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) March 31, 2026 And this was far from Brown’s first flirtation with beyond-the-pale rhetoric, as the Daily Caller reported: A Georgetown student who spoke to the Daily Caller News Foundation called on the professor to be removed from the university, saying Brown is “fundamentally at odds with Georgetown’s core values.” “Professor Jonathan Brown’s recent remarks continue a troubling pattern of reckless, incendiary, and dangerous statements that he has made without remorse,” Shae McInnis, president of Georgetown’s College Republicans chapter, told the DCNF. “Just last June, he stated that Iran should bomb U.S. military bases, and now he suggests that people should get over rape gangs. Comments like these reflect a worldview fundamentally at odds with Georgetown’s core values and are a disgrace to our academic community. The university should take decisive action and remove him from his position.” The DCNF reported on Brown’s comments in June, when he called for Iran to do a “symbolic strike” on the U.S. in retaliation after President Donald Trump announced attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites. “I’m not an expert, but I assume Iran could still get a bomb easily,” Brown said on social media at the time. “I hope Iran does some symbolic strike on a base, then everyone stops. I’m surprised this is what these FDD/Hasbara people have been auto-erotically asphyxiating themselves for all these years.” Brown’s justification of rape and other horrific events in the name of Islam date back even further. In 2017, the Daily Caller reported on Brown openly supporting Islamic supremacism and defending slavery and rape. Here’s some additional coverage of the story:

President Trump Announces ALL U.S. Ships, Aircraft’s And Military Personnel Will Remain Near Iran

President Trump has given an update on the future of the U.S. military’s presence near Iran. In a late-night Truth Social post on Wednesday night, Trump shared that all U.S. aircraft, ships, weaponry, and military personnel will remain in place near Iran. Trump went on to share that U.S. military assets will remain in the region until an official deal with Iran is made. CNN reported more on Trump’s latest announcement: All US ships, aircraft, weapons, military personnel will remain “in place, in and around, Iran” until a full agreement is reached, US President Donald Trump said in a post to Truth Social late Wednesday. “If for any reason it is not, which is highly unlikely, then the “Shootin’ Starts,” bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before,” Trump wrote. Iran must have “NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS and, the Strait of Hormuz WILL BE OPEN & SAFE,” Trump added. Negotiations between the US and Iran are set to take place in Islamabad, Pakistan on Saturday. Here’s his post: pic.twitter.com/Ew4H7lRMIj — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) April 9, 2026 In a separate post, President Trump called out The New York Times and CNN for their “false” reports on the U.S. negotiations with Iran: Fox News covered Trump’s comments: President Donald Trump criticized media outlets Wednesday evening for reporting what he said was incorrect information regarding peace negotiations with Iran. “The Failing New York Times and Fake News CNN each reported a totally FAKE TEN POINT PLAN on the Iran negotiations which was meant to discredit the people involved in the peace process,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. Trump said all ten points reported by the outlets were a “made up HOAX.” pic.twitter.com/PcUxnuzCqN — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) April 9, 2026 What’s your perspective?
