Don’t be surprised at this, but your tax dollars are being spent to subsidize a burgeoning industrial complex bent on producing… nothing of value. Welcome to the world of carbon capture and sequestration, which is modern capitalism’s answer to Holland’s 17th-century tulip craze. In case you’re thoroughly unfamiliar with all this, here’s a quick synopsis: chemical plants, oil refineries, and other manufacturing and industrial facilities generally emit carbon dioxide either directly out of smokestacks or indirectly due to using a lot of electricity. And carbon dioxide has gone from being a necessary ingredient for human life to, apparently, a dangerous pollutant which is responsible for Planet Earth heating up to the point where it won’t be able to sustain civilization in a dozen years. They’ve been saying this for well more than a dozen years, you know, but just trust them… that doomsday clock is going to start any time now. (RELATED: Dangers of Global Governance: UN Aims for Global Carbon Tax on Shipping) What we don’t know is when or if carbon dioxide will poison the planet to the point where the Earth becomes a hothouse, but we do know that more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has a real effect. And not a particularly poisonous one. In 1975, carbon dioxide was measured at 331 parts per million as a fraction of the gases making up our atmosphere. Today, the number is 420 parts per million. That would seem like a significant increase, but it’s an absolute blip on the screen. 420 parts per million is a whopping 0.042 percent of the atmosphere, and given that 78 percent of it is nitrogen and 21 percent is oxygen, we’re really not talking about a significant presence here. And yet, while the global Left has been screeching about the deleterious effects of carbon dioxide, the 27 percent increase in CO2 in the atmosphere is making this a greener planet. For example, the Earth’s vegetated area gained 5 percent more leaf cover from 2000 to 2020, equivalent to adding greenery the size of the Amazon rainforest. More plant food means more plants. It means less deserts. It means better crop yields and therefore more food, more habitat area for animals and a healthier planet. We think that the planet is a little warmer than it was in the late 19th century, but we really don’t know that because the methods used for measuring temperature now are totally different from what they were 150-200 years ago. So much so that if you’re trying to gauge a change in average global temperature of, say, 1.1 degrees Celsius over two centuries as significant, you can’t really claim you should be taken seriously. And while these same people estimate that increased vegetation absorbs about half of the carbon dioxide fed by that increase, let’s not pretend that the global warming crowd has really proven their case. Which is why in America and lots of other countries, the steam has come right out of the “climate change” alarmist narratives. People don’t really care. (RELATED: The Real Climate Change Disaster) Oh, but the elites do. They sure love that climate change story, and in Europe, they’re so enamored of it that virtually the whole continent has committed to something called Net Zero. Which, for the unwashed, is a commitment to produce no more carbon dioxide through human endeavors than is currently being produced. (RELATED: Climate ‘Changists’ Cashing In, European-Style) That means fewer people, fewer livestock, fewer pets, fewer cars with internal combustion engines, and fewer factories. It also means a lot less electricity. Something amazing happened a week ago in Spain. Just a couple of days after the government there bragged about running the entire power grid for a brief time on “renewable” energy, meaning no power generated by coal or natural gas or other hydrocarbon-based fuel (though there are those who will tell you that oil and gas are actually renewable; rather than the products of rotted dinosaurs, they’re actually produced by chemical processes deep under the earth), the entire grid went down all over the Iberian Peninsula. (RELATED: Chronicle of an Ideological Blackout) From a lack of inputs. Anyone who knows anything about power generation will tell you that your baseload power supply cannot be variable. No electric grid can survive without fairly severe damage unless there is a constant supply of electric power to charge that grid. So when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine, if you don’t have enough power not dependent on those things going into your grid, it’s… bad. I mention this because the Europeans, who are at this point utterly incapable of avoiding stupid, self-destructive policies, have abandoned coal power plants, and in most places they’ve abandoned nuclear power as well. They’re covering the continent with wind turbines and solar panels and finding out that what comes from that is sky-high electric rates, deindustrialization, and a rotten quality of life. (RELATED: Germany’s Suicide Pact with Green Ideology) In the name of the planet, which is increasingly covered with leaves. While the Chinese build a coal-fired power plant on every street corner and are busily burning American coal to run those plants and pump out all the increased CO2 that the Euros are so virtuously foregoing. Yes, it’s very dumb. It turns out the Euros are actually exporting this stupidity. Now we go to natural gas. Because they won’t use coal to power the grid and because they need some sort of feedstock for baseload power, the Euros are becoming very, very good customers for natural gas. That’s one reason that despite the whole continent screaming at Vladimir Putin for invading Ukraine, and intermittently demanding American troops to land in Kyiv and start World War III, the Euros are actually spending more buying Russian oil and gas than they are in helping the Ukrainians hold off the Russian army. The answer to this, of course, is to buy natural gas from the good old U.S. of A. We’ve got as much or more of the stuff as the Russians do, we have a hell of a good delivery apparatus given our well-developed pipeline infrastructure, and we’re building out liquefaction and transport facilities at a breathtaking pace so that American liquified natural gas can begin powering the industrialized world at a lower carbon footprint than coal ever will. But that isn’t enough for the Euros, who still think natural gas is dirty. And now we come to carbon capture. There are meager commercial uses for carbon dioxide. It’ll go in fire extinguishers. There is some use for CO2 in refrigeration (though it’s nowhere near as useful as old-fashioned freon in that respect). It’s said you can combine CO2 with hydrogen to produce synthetic hydrocarbons like jet fuel, though that market can best be described as nascent. In the construction industry, the new craze is to pump CO2 into concrete, but there isn’t much evidence that CO2 makes concrete any stronger. It’s possible to use CO2 to make methanol, urea, and polymers, though again, that isn’t the only or best way to do those things. You can pump CO2 in high concentrations down into an oil well to generate increased oil recovery. And yes, it’ll make carbonated drinks. And that’s it. For a substance that is everywhere and which feeds plants, without which we can’t survive, there isn’t any reason to “capture” carbon dioxide. You can’t trap it and sell it. But that didn’t stop the climate communists in the Biden administration from putting a subsidy on trying to do just that. The U.S. federal government supports carbon capture and sequestration through a combination of tax credits, grants, and funding programs aimed at reducing CO2 emissions to combat climate change. Primarily, this comes from something called the Section 45Q Tax Credit, which offers up a per-ton credit for carbon capture and sequestration. That credit was set up in 2008. Then it was expanded in 2018, and expanded again in 2022 under Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act — which was the manifestation of much of the insane Green New Deal. Industry pulled in about a billion dollars worth of 45Q credits from 2010-19. That number is projected to be $5 billion from 2023-27 thanks to Biden. (RELATED: Getting Back to an ‘America First’ Energy Policy) They’re building carbon pipelines all over the country now, and they’re also creating injection wells to pump carbon into the earth. This is happening because oil and gas companies now believe, based on the numbers Biden laid down in the stupid Green New Deal bill in 2022, that they can get a double win with oil exploration and production — namely, making real money pulling oil and gas out of the ground and then fake money in generating 45Q credits for sequestering the CO2 that their oil and gas produces. Which isn’t great news for the tree community, but in any event, there are now billions of dollars being spent to lay down an entire infrastructure to trap carbon dioxide which generally can’t be used for any viable economic purpose other than to placate left-wing lunatics who think a 1 degree increase in global temperatures over the next 100 years is an existential crisis for humanity. It’s the Ernie Hudson job interview scene from Ghostbusters being played out on a macro scale… This is why the oil and gas industry in America, which is anxious to displace Russia as the supplier of choice to Europe and other markets, is all about carbon capture. Are they doing carbon capture projects in Russia right now? Please. Are they doing them in the Middle East or North Africa, other places with large oil and gas production? Kind of, but not really. It’s more like they’re talking about carbon capture rather than actually doing it, with three projects currently underway and 15 more “planned.” We’re the people who can sell “green” oil and gas now. But in three to five years, when the power grid failures like the one last week in Spain keep happening again and again and the grid in Europe begins to collapse, absolutely no one there will give a fig about carbon capture or Net Zero. They will buy all the natural gas we can sell them, and they’ll be building natural gas-fired power plants everywhere they can, because those are generally cheap to build, quite effective in producing electricity, and squeakily clean from an environmental perspective. And we’ll have spent billions on these carbon-capture projects, paid for by profits from supplying the world with energy, which suddenly have zero practical use. They’ll have been indulgences, in a couple of senses of the word. Is this a disaster? It’s an irritant. Nothing about any of this is productive. It’s a massive waste of money — but at the end of the day, it’s a waste of the Euros’ money. President Trump endorsed all this carbon capture nonsense because he looked at the numbers and recognized there was more economic worth in building all this stuff as a requisite for winning the LNG and oil trade than there is in getting rid of the stupid subsidies for it. At least for now. But are we creating an environmental mess by pumping that CO2 into the ground? Nobody knows. The virtually certain thing is that eventually, the CO2 being pumped into those wells is going to find a way to interact with the groundwater. Mix carbon dioxide with water and you get carbonic acid, which isn’t all that poisonous a substance. Could there be some places where you’re essentially going to get Perrier water on tap? Maybe. Then again, we’ve never done this experiment at scale. Will injecting untold tons of CO2 into the ground cause earthquakes? Will pipeline leaks bathe whole locations in enough carbon dioxide to poison the folks? That happened in Sartartia, Mississippi, in 2020, when a 24-inch CO2 pipeline broke during a mudslide. Some 45 people were hospitalized, with symptoms including dizziness, shortness of breath, convulsions, unconsciousness, and foaming at the mouth, consistent with CO2 poisoning (asphyxiation from oxygen displacement) and possible hydrogen sulfide exposure. The air reportedly had a green haze to it that smelled like rotten eggs. Nobody can really say how risky this all is. But what I can predict is that in five years we’ll go back to feeding the plants with harmless atmospheric carbon dioxide, and those carbon capture projects will sit idle, having served their uses of feeding the egos of virtual-signaling leftists and fattening the bank accounts of rent-seeking oil industry players. It’s a scam agreed upon, and everybody’s getting a piece. Hopefully, when the modern-day tulip craze is over, we’ll learn some lessons from this. But probably not. I awoke Monday morning to this striking headline, “Trump to Impose 100% Tariff on Movies Produced in Foreign Countries: ‘We Want Movies Made in America Again.’” President Trump announced that he was authorizing his Department of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative to “begin the process of instituting” a 100 percent tariff on movies produced outside the United States. “The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,” stated Trump on his Truth Social. “Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat.” Hogwash. Downright ludicrous. A bad idea, especially for a woke industry so utterly unworthy. In truth, our movie industry offers disincentives to our filmmakers, especially conservative ones. (RELATED: A Single Word Induced My Hollywood Flashback) Why in the world does Donald Trump want to protect Hollywood? Does he not realize what kind of bilge Hollywoke has been producing and, hence, why it has been failing? What the left-wingers who have hijacked Hollywood need is more, rather than less, foreign competition. The last thing they deserve is to be bailed out as they continue to generate garbage. Modern Hollywood’s values are antithetical to what has made America great. Its values certainly run contrary to those of Trump supporters. The reality is that because of the leftist takeover of Tinseltown, conservative filmmakers have been forced to go abroad to make movies independently, having been blacklisted by the Hollywood Left. And here’s something that President Trump particularly needs to know: Another major reason for American filmmakers bolting Hollywood for greener pastures is that the taxes in California are so outrageous that the environment for making films there is cost-prohibitive. (RELATED: As Hollywoke Crumbles) I know this from personal experience. Our 2024 Reagan movie was filmed in Oklahoma. It had to be made in Oklahoma because it could not be financially made in California. The tax rates busted the budget. We had to go to another state. (READ MORE: My Response to the Reagan Critics and Haters.) That enormous tax burden was created by Democrats in California — politicians and their voters. Donald Trump’s movie tariff idea gets those Democrats (who despise him) off the hook. They will have no incentive to change their behavior. Hollywood’s liberal filmmakers and actors who complain about the high taxes on their movies will continue to do what they do: vote for the liberal politicians who slap them with the high taxes. It’s their own voting choices and policies that are hurting them, not foreigners. Moreover, oftentimes a filmmaker must go abroad for the proper scenery. That’s so obvious that I need not give examples, but picture, say, a film like Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. That kind of movie must be shot in Rome. Imagine trying to rebuild a set like that on a Hollywood studio lot, made even more financially impossible by California’s outrageous tax rates. Sticking with Italy, look at the experiences of one of President Trump’s designated Hollywood ambassadors: Mel Gibson. Gibson’s epic The Passion of the Christ is the most successful independent film ever, and he had to shoot it abroad — in Italy. His coming sequel, on the Resurrection (again starring Jim Caviezel), is also filmed in Italy. Hollywood, of course, hates Mel Gibson. The liberals there would strip him of his citizenship and exile him abroad if they could. Donald Trump’s tariff action rewards Gibson’s persecutors and, conversely, punishes Gibson for the wisdom and necessity of making his films abroad. I recently did a piece on the Academy Awards committee denying the Reagan movie Oscar nominations because it failed to meet the industry’s hideous new DEI criteria. I concluded by urging filmmakers to get the hell out of Hollywood and make their films elsewhere, including abroad if need be. Trump’s action goes against that advice completely. I can’t imagine even the typical MAGA supporter being happy with this Trump thinking. Indeed, as for where I read that headline noted at the start of this article, it was Breitbart. Typically, the readers in the comments section at Breitbart defend Donald Trump on almost anything, including his tariff policy. This time, however, the comments blasted Trump’s idea. “Hollywood is 99% communist, LGBT trash,” reads the first of over a thousand reader comments. “It shouldn’t get any help from the government. Let it crash.” “Yes, bailing those preachy leftist zeros out would just be rewarding bad behavior,” says the next comment. “Maybe make movies people actually want to see rather than preaching leftist nonsense at us?” “With its incessantly woke agenda, Hollywood’s demise is completely self-inflicted,” said the next comment. “Just a stream of garbage being pumped out for years! Values antithetical to most Americans and globalist propaganda don’t sell.” Here’s another: “The reason for foreign movies is because of Hollywood. Change Hollywood back to how they used to be and we won’t have that issue.” And another: “I thought Trump was smart. Doesn’t he know that such a protectionist move will only make American-based films much more expensive, as production costs will move to absorb as much of that 100% buffer as they can get away with? Like universities and student loans.” The comments went on and on, and they are spot on. I appreciate that Donald Trump wants to help, say, American dairy farmers facing outlandish tariffs from Justin Trudeau’s Canada. But why protect and bail out corrupt, rotten, degenerate Hollywood? What Hollywood leftists have done to that extraordinary industry is unconscionable. They deserve condemnation. Actually, they deserve competition. I teach a weekly class on Zoom every Sunday morning from 11:00 a.m. PDT through 12:30 pm, and I then post it on YouTube two hours later. (As of May 2025, now at 67 episodes.) The class is a current events class (with plenty of my commentary, mostly informative, some snarky) that covers news throughout the world that impacted Jews, particularly those in America and Israel, during the prior week. It started when I was in the hospital recovering from my lung transplant, so I could not do much else, but it hit a nerve (as well as some alveoli) and became a small hit, so I keep doing it. It seems, for better and worse, that there always is more than too much to cover each week. I cover Israel’s seven-front war (Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Judea-Samaria, Yemen, Iran, and European Union antisemitism), make sure to include some latest hit songs out of Israel, and throw in some human interest and humor news. One of the ongoing matters that arises week after week is the Gaza Famine Fraud. There is no famine in Gaza. They started a war, massacred 1,200 innocent people, mostly Israeli “Peace at Any Cost” leftists who chose to live near Gaza so they could befriend their “cousins” across their “friendly” Gaza border, send them gifts of love and appreciation, shuttle them to Israeli hospitals, hire them, and bring them into their homes and families. When the October 7, 2023 massacres happened — mass slaughter and butchering of naïve kids dancing all night at a “Nova Festival,” raping of women and then murdering them, raping the dead, mutilating their dead bodies, going into kibbutz homes and slaughtering the elderly and infirm, putting babies into kitchen ovens and burning them alive — Israeli leftists were especially in shock. “But we were so kind to them. It turned out that the Gazan Arabs they had befriended and trusted had leveraged that intimacy to garner information they could transmit to Hamas — or they themselves were Hamas. Hamas knew the names of each family, down to the kids and pets. They knew which homes had dogs. They knew which families would not be home that Shabbat and Simchat Torah of October 7 because the Sabbath-observant kibbutz residents would leave the kibbutzim every Friday afternoon, year-round, to spend Shabbat elsewhere in more Orthodox settings. (RELATED: New Report: Hamas, Iran, and Hezbollah Plotted for Years to Destroy Israel on October 7) I am asked from time to time: “But don’t you have sympathy for the ‘Palestinians’ in their famine?” No. No. and No. No sympathy. No “Palestinians.” No famine. First, they are not “Palestinians.” They are Arab Gazans or Gazan Arabs. There is no such thing as “Palestine” or “Palestinians,” and never was. Look up all of recorded history. There never was an Arab polity called “Palestine.” Find the name of one president, king, emperor, sultan, or other “Arab Palestine” leader in all of history. None.  What was the name of their currency? America uses dollars. The French use francs. Germans use deutschmarks. The British use pounds. The Spanish use pesos. Israelis use shekels. Jordanians use dinars. So what was the currency of “Palestine”? There was none. The land is not “Palestine.” Never was. Rather — From the River to the Sea — it all is Israel. For a while, foreign occupiers gave it different names than the names in the Bible, where Joshua and King David and Jesus walked: Judea and Samaria. Sometimes, places change their names or have them changed by occupiers. Siam became Thailand. New Amsterdam became New York. Burma to Myanmar. Ceylon to Sri Lanka. Persia to Iran. (Shea Stadium to Citi Field…) “Palestine”? According to Encyclopædia Britannica, modern Israel’s first Rav HaRoshi (Chief Rabbi), Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, was the “first Chief Rabbi of Palestine.” Yasser Arafat had a chief rabbi? Hamas has a chief rabbi (besides Bernie Sanders and George Soros)? The Arabs of Zion never had a capital — not Jerusalem and not anywhere — because they never had a country. They don’t even have their own name for the land. “West Bank”? That’s the name of their land?  Nonsense: that’s Jersey City, Weehawken, and Hoboken along the Hudson. All the region’s Arab countries and cities have names, typically from the Bible: Jordan, Lebanon, Tyre, Sidon, Egypt, Damascus. In Judea and Samaria — the real (and only) name for the “West Bank,” whether you use the Hebrew Bible or the Christian Bible, the cities have Hebrew Biblical names: Bet Lechem (Bethlehem), Hevron (Hebron), Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), Beersheva (Beersheba), Galil (Galilee), and such. That is why the Arabs and their Israel-haters call the land “West Bank” — because they have no Arab name for it, none through all of history, and they do not want to call it “Judea” because even the idiot students in the Ivy League would not be able to claim that Judea is not Jewish but Arab. So they call it “West Bank.” But “West Bank” of what? If you have ever been in the “West Bank,” i.e., Judea and Samaria, you cannot see a bank of anything. The Jordan River? None of the “Palestinians” live along the Jordan River. Indeed, the state of Arkansas just recently passed legislation that all references to that Mideast region in any state legislation may not be called “West Bank” but instead must be called “Judea and Samaria.” If it’s time to call the “Gulf of Mexico” the “Gulf of America,” then it is 2,000 years overdue to call Judea and Samaria “Judea and Samaria.” So if the land is not “Palestine,” and the Arabs there are not “Palestinians,” what are they? What shall we accurately call them? Call them Arabs. Gazan Arabs and Arab Gazans. Judean and Samarian Arabs. “But then you are dividing the Arabs of Gaza from the Arabs of Judea and Samaria? How can they have a united country if they do not even share the same name of ‘Palestinians’?” Exactly. They do not share the name because they are not a uniquely particular “Palestinian people” just as it did not take long for the world to figure out that the people of Bangladesh were not one with those of Pakistan, even though some experimented with uniting them as “East Pakistan” and “West Pakistan.” Half the time — when they can — the terrorists leading Gaza and those leading the Arab entity in Judea and Samaria butcher each other. All the media reporting out of there is a lie, and no lie is greater than the Gaza Famine Fraud. A year and a half of war, and where are the media photos of emaciated Gazan Arabs with swelled bellies, as they show on Sunday mornings in Darfur, Sudan, and other places in Africa? That is famine. But in Gaza? Did you see the Gaza Arabs who assembled at the mass spectacles when Hamas released two kidnapped Jews at a time? Famine? Famine? Half of those people needed Weight Watchers. Ozempic. There they were, interviewed by the Arab media. Look at them. Contrast that with YouTube videos from Darfur. There is no famine in Gaza. Never has been, just as they lie about the casualty numbers. 50,000 dead?  Who counts those numbers? Answer: Hamas provides the numbers. It’s all a fraud. The fraud is documented. And, of those supposed 50,000 dead, how many are Hamas terrorists killed in battle? Israel says 25,000 or so have been Hamas armed fighters. So, suddenly, armed terrorists are half the number of those killed — and they should be killed. But wait — there’s more: How many of the others are women who were living with Hamas terrorists — married to them, their sisters, mothers, cousins, daughters? And how many of the boys are their sons, brothers, uncles, and fathers? If an Arab slaughters and rapes a Jewish woman or bakes a Jewish baby alive in an oven, then goes back home to his wife and kids, that’s “Home Free All”? In fact, it would seem that Gaza is the safest, healthiest place on earth. We all should move there. Let’s close our eyes and make believe the Hamas numbers are correct, and 50,000 have died, all innocent victims of Israeli genocide. Got that? Just like the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, France’s Macron, and the South African criminal government would like us to believe. OK? 50,000 dead, all killed by Israel over the last 18 months. The total dead of Gaza — all killed by Israel. OK? Let’s make believe and say. What other country in the world, what other place on earth, can say that, in the last 18 months, not one of their two million population has died of anything else except for Israelis? All their reported deaths. No heart attacks. No leukemia, glioblastoma, other cancer, heart attacks, interstitial lung disease, kidney failure, car accidents, street fights, and stabbings — only Israelis? And what kind of “genocide” — a word that means deliberately and methodically eliminating and exterminating an entire people — sees that people, the Gazan Arabs, sustain an increase in population during the genocide? Under Israel, the Gaza Arab population has surged by more than two percent since October 7, 2023. Some genocide. Contrast that with Germany and the Jews; there were 18 million Jews, and then, after the genocide, there were 12 million Jews. One third of all Jews were methodically eliminated in death machines: relocated into ghettoes, then rounded up and loaded onto cattle cars to death camps. Upon arrival, lined up, women and children were separated from the more durable men and promenaded the gas chambers. Bodies were then extricated and stuffed into ovens, mass crematoria. Specific teams of death camp inmates called “Sonderkommandos” were then established to do the deeds. The Sonderkommandos were fed well enough and treated adequately enough to remain strong and healthy enough to lead the victims into the gas chambers, extricate their corpses, incinerate them, and remove the ashes, salvage gold tooth fillings, and such, However, since they would see too much, every three months all Sonderkommandos were executed, and a new team of Sonderkommandos was gathered for the next three months. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, where the Germans could not maintain such a methodical approach, they had mobile death units, Einsatzgruppen, assisted by locals, to line up, shoot, and bury Jews in ditches. The Einsatzgruppen murdered more than one million Jews. That is Genocide. Or the Hutus and Tutsis of Rwanda. Genocide 101: Nearly one million Tutsis were methodically exterminated. But the Gazan Arabs? There are more of them now than before. But the craziest of all is the Gaza Famine Fraud. Israel needs to stop sending food, water, electricity, and gas into Gaza. No other country at war does this. Is America now sending “humanitarian aid” to Yemen as we fight the Houthis, who have caused chaos for Red Sea shipping? Of course not. Who fights a war while feeding their own murderers like it is summer camp?  Israel even sends them desserts! Who does that? Or is the Zionist strategy to kill them with sugar — Diabetes Genocide! Either they die-or-beat-us: di-a-bet-es. With the change to the Trump administration, we will hopefully stop telling Israel to feed Gazan Arabs, and we will hopefully not start feeding Yemenis. If they want to eat, let them stop murdering our civilians.
