‘A Total Reset’: President Trump Shares Major Update On US-China Trade Negotiations
While President Donald Trump’s naysayers across the U.S. and around the world have described his tariffs on China as a detriment to the economy and global commerce, he has remained steadfast in his pursuit of fairer trade policies.
Over the weekend, officials from both nations met for a discussion of the ongoing impasse, and Trump offered a positive assessment of the talks.
According to the New York Post:
President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social Saturday night that “great progress” had been made during weekend trade negotiations with China.
During the meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, between U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and a Chinese delegation, “many things” were discussed and “much [was] agreed to,” Trump said.
No major breakthrough was announced in discussions that lasted over 10 hours, The Associated Press reported, and negotiations are scheduled to continue Sunday.
The administration announced a round of tariffs April 2 and later imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese goods.
After reducing reciprocal tariffs on other countries for 90 days to a baseline of 10%, China raised tariffs on U.S. goods to 125%.
On Thursday, Trump told reporters at the White House China “very much” wanted to make a deal, ending the intense tariff battle.
While the president did not provide many specifics Saturday night, he described the agreement as “a total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner.”
The development attracted significant social media attention:
JUST IN: Scott Bessent has successfully negotiated a TRADE RESET with China during the hours-long meeting today with officials.
TRUMP: “MUCH AGREED TO…” in a FRIENDLY manner…
Talks are supposed to continue TOMORROW.

I have been telling anyone who’ll listen that Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are not decoupling the US and China from each other.
They’re decoupling the US and China from the Globalist System.
This will benefit both nations.

Trump’s update came just hours after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s positive assessment, per The Hill:
“So I think the president would like to work it out with China, as he said, he’d like to deescalate it. But look, he’s not going to live with a trillion-dollar deficit,” Lutnick said Friday during his appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”
“He’s just not going to do it. So the idea is de-escalate, but let’s get China trade right, and let’s get trade deals with the rest of the world,” he continued. “Let’s cut our trade deficit down. Let’s grow our GDP.”
The commerce chief added, “I think the President can grow our GDP 3 percent, I mean, I think this president’s got it right. He’s got it dead right, and he’s doing everything he’s supposed to be doing.”
Lutnick’s remarks came just ahead of scheduled trade talks between the U.S. and China in Switzerland. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will lead the U.S. delegation for talks in Geneva opposite Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
And here’s what Secretary of State Marco Rubio had to say about the negotiations:
SOS Marco Rubio: “We were far too dependent on China. We allowed them, through unfair trade practices, to deindustrialize us…that’s a very dangerous place to be, & President Trump is taking it on & he’s doing it now because it needs to be done now. It cannot wait any longer.” pic.twitter.com/YtXASRn5tw
