So-Called ‘Schumer Shutdown’ Puts Ohio Dems in Tricky Spot

Republicans have wasted no time reminding voters how the so-called “Schumer Shutdown” hurts working families in Ohio, putting Ohio Democrats in an awkward spot for next year’s elections. On Wednesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee launched a new ad targeting Democrat Reps. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, Emilia Sykes of the 13th Congressional District, and Greg Landsman of the 1st Congressional District for their role in the shutdown. The ad is running in their districts. “Democrats refuse to fund the government, so now military troops, police, and border patrol lose their paychecks,” a narrator warns. The ad’s focus isn’t merely on crime and immigration, but also others affected. “Because of Democrats, veterans, farmers, small businesses, lose critical funding. Disaster relief cut off. Democrats are grinding America to a halt in order to give illegal immigrants free healthcare.” ?New NRCC ad: Democrats just shut down the government.Military troops, police, Border Patrol lose paychecksVeterans, farmers, small businesses, disaster relief cut off —all because Democrats choose handouts for illegal immigrants over Americans! pic.twitter.com/dSVPW3RhD8— NRCC (@NRCC) October 1, 2025 “Out of touch Democrats Marcy Kaptur, Emilia Sykes, and Greg Landsman are grinding America to a halt. Their shutdown puts critical programs that Ohioans rely on at risk, just so they can prioritize open borders and handouts for illegal immigrants. Voters won’t forgive this betrayal,” National Republican Congressional Committee Spokesman Zach Bannon told The Daily Signal. Republican Kevin Coughlin, who narrowly lost last year to Sykes and is seeking a rematch, was the subject of ire from Sykes’ campaign regarding the ad. “Lobbyist Kevin Coughlin is so concerned with protecting corporations and billionaires that he supports shutting down the government and making life even more expensive for working families in northeast Ohio so it’s no surprise that his special interest buddies are lying about Emilia Sykes and her effort to keep the cost of healthcare down and put money back in people’s pockets,” said Justin Barasky, an advisor to the congresswoman’s campaign, said in a statement to The Daily Signal. In response, Coughlin put the blame back on Sykes. “This is the Sykes Shutdown. While she points fingers, Ohio families are left paying the price. By siding with Washington Democrats, Sykes is forcing our troops, TSA, and Border Patrol to work without pay, jeopardizing support for nearly 37,000 Ohio veterans, and putting small businesses, farmers, and Head Start programs at risk. Sykes chose political theater over the people of Ohio,” he told The Daily Signal. The Daily Signal also reached out to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, as well as the campaigns for Kaptur and Landsman. Kaptur and Sykes are in “Toss-Up” races. Landsman is in a “Lean Democratic” or “Likely Democratic” race. Such races could be affected by redistricting, with the state legislature in the process of redrawing congressional maps. In the Senate, former Sen. Sherrod Brown is seen as a best hope for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to cut the GOP majority in 2026. (Still, Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, is favored to hold onto his seat.) Ohio workers shouldn’t be forced to pay the price for Washington politicians’ political games. We owe it to our constituents to do our jobs and prevent a shutdown that would hurts Ohioans.— Sherrod Brown (@SenSherrodBrown) September 29, 2023 Brown, who lost to now Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno last November, had plenty to say while in office regarding the need to avoid shutdowns. During former President Joe Biden’ was in office’s administration, Brown also voted 13 times for continuing resolutions to fund the government. However, as of Wednesday afternoon, Brown has not posted to X mentioning the shutdown explicitly, but rather about “Washington insiders” and “fighting for Ohio.” The Daily Signal reached out to Brown’s campaign for comment. President Trump's temper tantrum had real consequences for federal workers like Vicki. We cannot afford another shutdown. https://t.co/0b8LAvjxgT— Sherrod Brown (@SherrodBrown) February 11, 2019 The National Republican Senatorial Committee on Wednesday lambasted Brown with a prediction on how he would vote. “Jon Husted is standing with President [Donald] Trump and fighting to keep the federal government open for Ohio families, ensure our military service members are paid, and defend the largest rural healthcare investment in history,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia. “Meanwhile, Sherrod Brown would have joined his former Democrat colleagues by voting for the Schumer Shutdown so they can fight to restore Biden-era free healthcare for illegal aliens.” During an exclusive interview with The Daily Signal, Husted framed the shutdown as a “Schumer shutdown.” Other Republicans have also used that narrative. Husted has been posting to X about the shutdown, including a repost from Americans for Prosperity Ohio’s Donovan O’Neil. Thank God Ohio has @berniemoreno & @JonHusted in the US Senate right now. Voting to:? Fund the Government? Secure the border? Protect our communities If @SherrodBrown was still in office he’d be lockstep with @SenSchumer to shut down the federal government.— Donovan O'Neil (@dtoneil) September 30, 2025 The Daily Signal also reached out to the Democratic Senatorial Congressional Campaign for comment on how the shutdown would affect this race. Afghanistan Reconnected After 48-Hour Taliban Internet Blackout

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. After nearly 48 hours of silence, Afghanistan’s digital lifeline has flickered back to life. Internet access and mobile networks, cut off since Monday evening, have been restored across the country following a sweeping blackout ordered by Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. During the outage, more than 40 million people were left cut off from communication and critical services, including education, banking, and healthcare. The blackout crippled the country’s already fragile economy, halted customs operations, and left schools and hospitals unable to function. The shutdown was not the result of technical failure. Multiple sources confirmed that Afghanistan’s fiber-optic infrastructure was intentionally taken offline. The blackout affected both phone and internet connectivity, which often operate over the same network backbone. No formal statement explained the decision at the time of the shutdown. However, Taliban authorities in recent weeks have voiced concerns about so-called “online immorality,” a phrase many interpret as a pretext for suppressing access to independent information and disrupting channels of dissent. Initially, disruptions were localized in provinces like Kandahar, Helmand, and Badakhshan. By late Monday, however, connectivity across the country had dropped sharply. According to NetBlocks, a global internet observatory, the pattern of disconnection was “consistent with the intentional disconnection of service.” The sudden restoration of service raises more questions than answers. There has been no public comment from the Taliban leadership about why the blackout ended or whether it could return. Rights groups remain alarmed, viewing the outage as part of a broader strategy to tighten control over the population by restricting communication. The past two days have shown how deeply Afghanistan now depends on digital infrastructure to function. Banks froze. Businesses stopped. Remote education and telemedicine came to a halt. With the lights back on, the scramble to recover begins, but so does the concern over when the next switch might be flipped. X Challenges Indian Court Ruling Upholding Censorship Takedown Portal

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. X is pushing back against an Indian court decision that it says opens the door to unchecked censorship. The company is contesting a ruling that it argues would force compliance with potentially millions of takedown demands, without giving those targeted any opportunity to defend themselves. The dispute centers on a government-run system called Sahyog, an online portal that allows officials to issue removal orders to platforms like X and Facebook. While the portal is described by authorities as a way to streamline communication between the government and tech companies, X has condemned it as a tool for silencing speech through secretive means. According to the company, Sahyog gives police and other officials the ability to demand content removal “based solely on allegations of ‘illegality,’” and all without oversight from the courts. In a public statement, X said it was “deeply concerned” about the portal’s design, claiming it lets authorities “issue arbitrary takedown orders through a secretive online portal.” The platform warned that refusal to comply could expose it to criminal charges. “We will appeal this order to defend free expression,” the company declared. This latest court challenge follows the Karnataka High Court’s decision to reject X’s earlier attempt to block the use of Sahyog. The portal’s introduction has raised broader questions about the balance of power between governments and the platforms that host public speech. X’s resistance is not new. The platform has repeatedly pushed back against Indian government efforts to control online content. In both 2022 and 2024, it fought legal battles over takedown orders targeting posts and accounts. The company also came under pressure in 2021 when, during massive protests, it initially agreed to remove several accounts but later reversed course. Indian officials responded with threats of imprisonment for Twitter employees. If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Dem Rep.: Not All Additional Healthcare ‘Funding We’re Talking About Is for American Citizens’

“So we do want to provide health care funds for illegals,” Fox News’ Brit Hume pointed out, reacting to a Democrat congressman’s admission Tuesday that not all of the increase in health care funding Democrats want is going to American citizens. “So we do want to provide health care funds for illegals, but just not much of it,” Chief Political Analyst Hume wrote on X.com, responding to video of Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) on Fox Business discussing the funding battle that has caused the government to shut down.   So we do want to provide health care funds for illegals, but just not much of it. https://t.co/2gueQGHShC — Brit Hume (@brithume) October 1, 2025   Host Maria Bartiromo: “What [Republicans] keep saying is that the Democrats want to make it easier for illegal immigrants to get health care. “And while they say they want to return to pre-COVID spending, there is no effort on the Democrats’ side to return to pre-COVID spending - if you’re adding a trillion dollars in health care spending. Your response?” Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA): “In terms of health care, the reality is they’re just not being honest. The amount of money that actually is going towards people who are undocumented is such a small portion of the Medicaid cuts or the Affordable Care Act, if at all.” …. “Anyone who looks at the numbers will acknowledge that 90 to 95% of the funding we’re talking about is for American citizens.” Thus, 5-10% of the funding would not go to American citizens, which would be up to $100,000,000 of the additional “trillion dollars in health care spending” Bartiromo noted Democrats are demanding in order to end the government shutdown. HACK! ABC’s Stephanopoulos Berates Johnson, Sucks Up to Jeffries Over Gov’t Shutdown

For day one of the government shutdown, ABC’s Good Morning America showed its rancorous liberal bias with back-to-back interviews Wednesday of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Co-host George Stephanopoulos fully embraced his background as a one-time Clinton official by berating and screeching at Johnson while providing Jeffries a rhetorically warm bed to lay his head at night. Stephanopoulos had the nerves to come out of the block with this question to Johnson accepting the left’s talking points as fact:   Stephanopoulos interjected in disgust, hectoring Johnson about the claims illegal immigrants have received health care benefits:   After the ABC tool stated Johnson was wrong four times, Johnson actually had the time to explain Democrats want to “unwind the changes that the Republicans put into the Big Beautiful Bill” meant to bolster “Medicaid for the people who are actually eligible to receive it.” “[W]e got an eligible recipients off of Medicaid, illegal aliens enabled by the young men who were riding the wagon who are not eligible to be there. Medicaid is intended for specific populations of U.S. citizens. That is young, pregnant women down on their luck, the disabled, and the elderly, those resources are being drained from those folks and so, we fixed that. We reduced waste, fraud, and abuse of the program,” Johnson explained. Hours later, Vice President Vance took direct aim at Stephanopoulos’s badgering and masterfully explained how illegal immigrants were slyly able to tap into federal benefits once they were released by the Biden administration with notices to appear or in process of asylum claims (click “expand”): I even saw I think it was George Stephanopoulos in an interview with Mike Johnson, did a fact check that was totally rooted in baseless claims. It was basically Democrat propaganda. If you look at the legislative text that they gave us, they tried to turn on two separate provisions that would give health care benefits to illegal aliens. Number one, if you’re an American citizen, you’ve been to a hospital in the last few years. You probably noticed that wait times are especially large. And very often somebody who’s there in the emergency room waiting is an illegal alien, very often a person who can’t even speak English. Why do those people get health care benefits at hospitals paid for by American citizens? The answer is a decision made by the Biden administration that the Trump administration, working with congressional Republicans, undid. We turned off that money spigot to health care funding for illegal aliens. The Democrats, in their legislative text, want to turn it back on. That’s one thing. The second thing, Matt, is we all know that there are various ways in which the Biden administration waved away illegal immigration status. They gave parolees. They gave asylum claims to people who weren’t really claiming asylum. And when they waved the magic wand of amnesty, giving millions of people legal status even though they were in the country illegally, they also gave those people access to health care benefits. So, what the Democrats are engaging in is a sleight of hand. They’re saying, no, no, no, those weren’t illegal aliens who were getting health care benefits, even though everybody — excuse me — knows they were in the country illegally. It’s a lie told by the Democrats that they’re not trying to give health care benefits to illegal aliens. It’s a lie. That is obviously untrue. If you just look at the text that they gave us, and all you have to do is understand that this is about who benefits, we think the American people’s government ought to benefit American citizens. The Democrats are willing to shut it down to benefit illegal aliens. The contrast couldn’t be more clear.  Stephanopoulos hilariously decided to move on:   “He had another deepfake video overnight. How does that help the cause of getting a deal and opening the government,” he huffed, to which Johnson pointed out the obvious that Trump “uses social media for humor,” “makes jokes,” and “does a lot of things.” Johnson then explained Schumer has a long history of “saying a shutdown would be dangerous and disastrous and reckless” and has pivoted because “ believes he will get a challenge for the Senate from AOC.” Stephanopoulos moved to one final subject:   Johnson let him have it and schooled Stephanopoulos on what should really be the focus of the political world at this very moment verus whatever irks partisan leftists (click “expand”): STEPHANOPOULOS: The President also saying at the Pentagon yesterday that he wants American cities to be used as training grounds for the American military. Is this the highest and best use of the military and is this the best way to train them? JOHNSON: I — I don’t serve in the Pentagon, I run the House of Representatives and what we need to talk about today is the harm that the American people will feel because of what Chuck Schumer is doing. Let me tell you what — what’s going to be hurt today. STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, hold on a second. As Speaker of the House — JOHNSON: Women, infants, and children — STEPHANOPOULOS: — do you — no, answer the question! JOHNSON: — are not going to have nutrition programs provided ople in the American cities the enemy within. You — I’m asking you, as Speaker of the House, do think that’s appropriate? JOHNSON: I’m — I’m not going to comment on your characterization of what the President said. I didn’t get to see that speech — STEPHANOPOULOS: Those — those are quotes. JOHNSON: — as I was a little busy yesterday. STEPHANOPOULOS: They’re not characterizations. JOHNSON: Well, you can take it out of context, which you often do and I don’t think it’s fair to the President. I can tell you what he’s done, though. He’s put troops and D.C. cleaned up the crime problem. People can walk to — safely to and from work today because the President takes crime seriously. Some big mayors in the blue cities are not and I think that’s probably what he was addressing there, but what we need to talk about now, speaking of troops, is they won’t be paid right now because the Democrats are playing political games. FEMA is not going to be provided. FEMA services will not be provided now that the governments shut down. A few flood insurance you need to renew before hurricanes come on, you can’t do that right now. We — we have people — critical medical services for veterans and families, I mean, suicide prevention programs, these are really serious issues that are being caused by the government shutdown and we need the Democrats to put the politics aside and keep the — the engines running here. It’s critically important for the American people and it’s stunning to me that they’re willing to play games like this when they themselves have said they will watch the tape through their entire careers that this should never be done. Stephanopoulos had enough: “Mr. Speaker, thank you. Nothing I said about the President was out of context. Those were direct quotes from the President, but thank you for your time.” “Cherry picked out of a long speech,” Johnson clapped back. The Jeffries portion was a series of “your response” questions, starting with Trump and the military:   The second touched on illegal immigrants and government benefits:   Stephanopoulos closed by expressing personal concern for Jeffries and his caucus:   CBS Mornings also featured an interview someone part of the negotiations as they were able to snag Vice President JD Vance. Co-host Tony Dokoupil showed far more respect while also not lobbing softballs. Here were his questions (click “expand”): I want to start with what’s happening now knowing that we’re going to talk about how we got here and how we got out of it, but right now the President has been talking about the possibility of mass layoffs. Is that an expansion or a continuation of what’s already happening, or should Americans be bracing for something new? (....) So, Mr. Vice President, let’s talk about how to get out of this by going right to that policy difference. It’s about subsidies supporting the Affordable Care Act. Democrats want to extend those subsidies. Republicans don’t. If those subsidies are not extended, people will see spikes in their health care costs. Some people will opt not to have insurance as a result. What do you want to have happen around those subsidies? Do you support extending them as a general matter? (....) Mr. Vice President, I — you know, both parties have shut down the government before because of policy disagreements. They often don’t get what they want. I have two quick follow-ups. First there on the Affordable Care Act subsidies, people do need to make decisions now. The renewal notices go out on November 1, so now is the time to think about whether you can afford health care going forward. Two, on this notion Democrats want to give a bunch of taxpayer dollars to illegal aliens, is that a reference to health care? Because when I look at it, you know, illegal aliens are not currently eligible for the Affordable Care Act as is, so what are you referring to there? (....) So, Mr. Vice President, what is your advice for more than 20 million Americans who rely on subsidies to afford health insurance? On the third question, Dokoupil did not rudely interrupt and squabble with Vance about illegal immigrants receiving benefits. Vance gave an explanation one will likely not hear elsewhere in the liberal media without some sort of condescending pushback: If you go back to the Biden era, they did two separate things. First of all, they encouraged illegal aliens and funded illegal aliens to go to American hospitals for health care. That was number one. Number two, they gave a massive, what’s called parole, they effectively waived an amnesty wand and gave health care benefits to many illegally in the country without documentation, without proper authorization. We undid both of those Biden-era programs to cut off that health care funding to illegal aliens. The Democrats want to reinstitute those policies and they’re saying that unless you reinstitute those policies that give benefits to illegal aliens, we want to shut down the government. We, of course, think that’s preposterous and I think, frankly, some Senate Democrats obviously agree with us on that point. Reagan-appointed judge rules Trump violated free-speech rights of pro-Palestinian foreign students

A U.S. judge ruled against the actions taken by the Trump administration against pro-Palestinian student protesters from foreign countries.U.S. District Judge William Young of Boston said in the scathing ruling that President Donald Trump violated the free-speech rights of student protesters when he sought to revoke their visas and send them back to their home countries.'Studying in the United States is a privilege that the Trump administration will not allow to foreign nationals who endanger America’s national security or imperil campus safety.'Young accused officials of the U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security of targeting noncitizen students for deportation "primarily on account of their First Amendment protected political speech" used to protest against Israel."They did so in order to strike fear into similarly situated non-citizen pro-Palestinian individuals, pro-actively (and effectively) curbing lawful pro-Palestinian speech and intentionally denying such individuals (including the plaintiffs here) the freedom of speech that is their right," he wrote in the 161-page ruling.Young characterized the president's actions as a threat to free speech. "The President’s palpable misunderstanding that the government simply cannot seek retribution for speech he disdains poses a great threat to Americans’ freedom of speech," he wrote. "I fear President Trump believes the American people are so divided that today they will not stand up, fight for, and defend our most precious constitutional values so long as they are lulled into thinking their own personal interests are not affected." Young also compared the wearing of masks by federal agents to the KKK."To us, masks are associated with cowardly desperados and the despised Ku Klux Klan," he wrote. "In all our history we have never tolerated an armed masked secret police."White House spokesperson Liz Huston said the administration would appeal the ruling."Studying in the United States is a privilege that the Trump administration will not allow to foreign nationals who endanger America’s national security or imperil campus safety," Huston added.RELATED: Mahmoud Khalil calls Trump administration 'fascist' after immigration judge orders his deportation Huston described the ruling as "an outrageous ruling that hampers the safety and security of our nation."Young was appointed to the court by President Ronald Reagan and is 85 years old.Like Blaze News?
