The one time she didn’t want to speak out? Maren Morris has never really been one to hold back from speaking her mind. A couple years ago, she found herself in the middle of feuds with Jason and Brittany Aldean after she criticized the singer’s wife for her views on transgenders, and last year she performed at the Democrat National Convention after endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Maren famously “left country music” back in 2023, citing its alleged toxic, sexist and racist culture that she couldn’t participate in anymore, but then quickly walked it back saying that was just a headline that got misconstrued. Then she said her success in country music came at a “moral cost,” whatever that means. And she’s since walked that back even more to clarify that she was talking about the Nashville country music industry, and not the genre as a whole. The point is, Maren has never really been shy about expressing her opinion. The (former?) country singer also recently went through a divorce with her now-ex husband, singer Ryan Hurd, and a few months after the divorce was finalized she made headlines once again when she came out as bisexual in an Instagram post for pride month where she claimed she was “happy to be the B in LGBTQ+.” Maren hasn’t really said much else about her sexuality, but during a recent interview with the AP she opened up on the decision to come out as bisexual and said that it took a while for her to get up the “bravery” to make it public: “I knew that about myself but I didn’t really feel like I was a part of the community. I felt like I was an ally and like, supportive of the community, but I just maybe internally hadn’t had the bravery to go there in myself and say the words out loud, which is so funny because I’m so open. I think there was just like, a full sweep after my divorce of like, I know these things about myself and I’m learning and learning how to verbalize a lot of it, and that was one of the pieces that like, set the rest free I suppose.” Of course Maren previously said that she wasn’t in a hurry to jump back in a relationship after her divorce, saying that she was going to take some time for herself: “I feel like for so long, just being an artist and taking care of a lot of people on the road, you get so used to being the boss. I sort of lost sight of truly taking care of myself. I feel like this is just a perfect moment for me to make that statement.” And she also revealed the lofty requirements she has for a future partner: “I think pouring myself into another person is probably not a healthy way of going about things. I think it shifts the expectations and power and entitlement a lot. I just have to put 100 percent into myself, and you truly have to be a spectacularly impressive individual to add something to my life because — and I don’t mean to sound full of myself — but the life that I’ve built, I am really, really happy with.” Apparently it’s harder than it sounds though: Maren said recently that she was having trouble with what she called the “new mutant strain of fake liberal men,” who she claims “pose as progressive dudes on dating apps.” It’s tough out there in the dating world.
