Man Nearly Dies After Following ChatGPT Diet Advice

ChatGPT diet advice poisoning has become a cautionary tale after a 60-year-old man developed bromism—bromide intoxication—by following unsafe AI guidance. Bromism was common a century ago, but it is rare today. This case shows how persuasive AI answers can still be dangerously wrong. From Salt-Free Goal to Toxic Swap The man wanted to eliminate table salt (sodium chloride) from his diet. Instead of cutting back, he searched for a full substitute. After asking an AI chatbot, he replaced salt with sodium bromide. That compound once appeared in old sedatives and some industrial products. However, it is not safe to use as food. He used sodium bromide in every meal for three months. Then a wave of symptoms hit. He developed paranoia, auditory and visual hallucinations, severe thirst, fatigue, insomnia, poor coordination, facial acne, cherry angiomas, and a rash. He feared his neighbor was poisoning him, avoided tap water, and distilled his own. When he tried to leave the hospital during evaluation, doctors placed him on an involuntary psychiatric hold for his safety. Clinicians identified bromism, caused by high bromide in the body. The condition can trigger neurological, psychiatric, and skin symptoms. It was far more common when bromide salts were prescribed for anxiety and insomnia. Lab tests also showed pseudohyperchloremia—a false high chloride reading—because bromide interfered with the assay. That artifact can confuse diagnosis. Treatment and Recovery Doctors provided IV fluids, electrolyte correction, and short-term antipsychotic medication. His symptoms improved over three weeks. He was discharged in stable condition and remained well at two-week follow-up. How the AI Answer Fell Short Updated detail: The case report appears in Annals of Internal Medicine Clinical Cases (2025). The authors—Audrey Eichenberger, Stephen Thielke, and Adam Van Buskirk—asked ChatGPT 3.5 a similar question. The model said “context matters,” but it did not warn against ingesting sodium bromide or prompt medical follow-up. A clinician would have asked clarifying questions and ruled out unsafe substances. Practical Safety Tips Never replace food ingredients with chemicals suggested online without medical guidance. Be wary of “alternatives” for salt; many are not physiologically equivalent. If symptoms appear after a diet change, stop the change and seek care. Use AI for general education only; do not treat it as medical advice. Bottom Line Generative AI can sound confident, yet omit critical warnings. For anything that affects your health—especially diet, drugs, or supplements—talk to a qualified professional first. One wrong substitution can be dangerous. Latin American leaders react to report that Trump will use US military against cartels

Presidents in Latin America have voiced their opposition to President Donald Trump reportedly ordering the U.S. military to take direct action against drug cartels in the region. As Blaze News previously reported, such a directive to the Department of Defense could allow the U.S. military to use force against groups that have been designated as foreign terrorists organizations. Many of those groups that are labeled as terrorists are based in Mexico, but a few others in Latin America and Haiti have the designation.Colombian President Gustavo Petro ... warned Colombians that Trump is going to bomb their country.Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured her country on Friday that the United States is not going to invade with its military."We cooperate, we collaborate, but there will be no invasion. That's ruled out, absolutely ruled out. ... When [the U.S.] come[s] to raise it, we have always said no," Sheinbaum said about the idea.Sheinbaum boasted that U.S. federal agents who operate in Mexico do so under strict rules."I think we are the country that has the most regulation for foreign agents, whether from the United States or from another country," she added."Let's see how the executive order is, but there is no risk that they are going to invade our territory," she concluded. — (@) Colombian President Gustavo Petro, an extreme leftist who has had an even rockier relationship with Trump, warned Colombians that Trump is going to bomb their country."We don't do that ourselves because the bombs were killing children, and now he is going to come. It's a problem of national discussion. ... National sovereignty exists, and I prefer to talk and coordinate than to impose. That cannot be imposed," Petro said. — (@) When Blaze News was in South America with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, she noted that Petro has not been very helpful in cracking down on the criminal organizations in his country that manufacture and traffic cocaine. While fentanyl is often considered the main scourge in the drug war, cocaine is still very popular in the United States and Europe. Fentanyl is also sometimes cut with cocaine, leading to accidental overdoses and deaths. In a statement, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told Blaze News, "President Trump’s top priority is protecting the homeland, which is why he took the bold step to designate several cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations."Blaze News also reached out to the Department of Defense and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for comment.RELATED: Tren de Aragua in crosshairs as Noem signs deal with Chile to help prevent foreign gangs from entering US Alex Brandon-Pool/Getty Images The U.S. troops currently stationed at the U.S.-Mexico border are not in an offensive posture, as their mission has been to help U.S. Border Patrol intercept any illegal border-crossers. The military's efforts, along with new policies in place to end catch-and-release, has resulted in a historic drop in illegal crossings.Like Blaze News?
