Why Christians Must Stand With Armenia

Why Christians Must Stand With Armenia

Later this month, I will travel to Armenia as part of a delegation of American Christian leaders. By historical consensus, Armenia is the world’s first Christian nation, having adopted Christianity in AD 301, more than a decade before Constantine’s Edict of Milan that granted religious liberty to Christians and others across the realm. Over the centuries, Armenia has preserved its Christian faith through hostile enemy invasions, forced conversions, and even genocide. Despite being surrounded by autocratic regimes and militant ideologies that directly contest its survival, it has maintained its original faith. In 2023, the world witnessed the forced displacement of over 120,000 Christian Armenians from their ancestral homeland of Artsakh (widely known as Nagorno-Karabakh), which had long been a self-governing democratic entity within the international borders of Azerbaijan. The removal of these Christians was the result of a brutal blockade, military assault, and systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing by despotic Azerbaijan, backed by authoritarian Turkey. Sadly, the world’s response to this attack on freedom, religious liberty, self-government, and the right of political self-determination was largely silence. As Scripture reminds us, “If one member suffers, all suffer together” (1 Corinthians 12:26). Armenia’s suffering must be our concern, not only because of our shared faith but because Armenia’s fate determines whether ancient Christian civilizations will be allowed to survive in an increasingly hostile neighborhood. Azerbaijan currently holds dozens of Armenian political prisoners, including former political and religious leaders and journalists. It has demolished centuries-old churches, bulldozed cemeteries, and attempted to erase every vestige of the region’s indigenous Christian heritage. What it cannot destroy is often defaced, and border communities in southern Armenia live in constant fear of violence. Our trip is organized by Save Armenia, a U.S.-based coalition of Christian and Jewish leaders. We draw global attention to these current threats and offer meaningful solidarity to Christians and Jews living in a perilous region. In the aftermath of recent ethnic cleansings, Save Armenia has mobilized support to protect Armenia’s sovereignty, advocate for justice, and raise awareness among American faith communities and policymakers alike. Our itinerary is both spiritual and strategic. We will visit displaced families who have lost everything yet remain deeply rooted in faith, and we will hear the voices of a people who have suffered for their faith yet never abandoned it. We will walk through villages near hostile frontiers, speak with the provincial governor, and meet with high-ranking officials from Armenia’s Foreign Ministry and Security Council. We will stand in monasteries older than most nations, praying in the 9th-century monastery of Tatev, perched high above a gorge in Armenia’s south. And we will stand in the ancient 3rd-century monastery where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was once imprisoned, and where the story of Christian Armenia began. We believe Christians everywhere have a moral responsibility to help their persecuted brethren. We speak up for persecuted Christians in the Middle East and Africa, and we must not ignore what is occurring in Armenia. Religious freedom cannot be a selective principle. Armenia has had a rocky path since regaining its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is now a pluralistic and scrappy democracy striving for peace and justice under immense pressure. It does not enjoy the protections of NATO, the backing of global oil wealth, or the security of a powerful military. What it does enjoy is a legacy of faith, a thirst for freedom, and a history that dates back to the earliest days of the Church. Armenia must continue to exist as a free nation. We urge our fellow Christians to learn more about our brethren there and help raise awareness about its dangerous situation. Inform your church, and pray for our brothers and sisters there. Also, let the federal Congressmen and Senators from your state know what is happening in and to Armenia. Knowledge is power, and once they know, they can take effective action. Specifically… Let them know about the recent ethnic cleansings at the hands of Azerbaijan. Urge them to seek the release of all Armenian political prisoners. Likewise, urge the defense of Armenia’s Christian heritage — demand that Azerbaijan preserve intact, without desecration or destruction, the ancient Armenian cultural and religious sites it controls. Insist on the preservation of Armenia’s borders against it neighbors who want to seize and control that land area. Collectively, we must support the Trump Administration’s efforts to help Armenia, but we must also encourage our federal legislators to do the same. Urge their specific engagement on the above matters. It’s easy to despair in today’s world, but Armenia offers a different lesson: that faith, even when bruised, can endure —that Christian identity, even when threatened, will inspire — and that moral solidarity can still change the course of history. Let us not stand idly by when there is so much we can easily do to help our brethren. Senator’s Hospitalization Casts Spotlight on Aging Congress

Senator’s Hospitalization Casts Spotlight on Aging Congress

The sudden hospitalization this week of retiring Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minn., was a reminder of the stresses of politics on an aging Congress. Smith, 67, was hospitalized Wednesday after not feeling well. She was discharged from the hospital the next day but had already announced that she would not run for reelection in 2026. Being a legislator sometimes requires staying up well into the night for key votes and frequently traveling back to one’s congressional district or state. They also must be able to handle some of the sweltering heat of Washington, D.C., in the summer.  Overall, the Congress elected in November 2024 was a little younger than its predecessor. According to the Pew Research Center, the median age for voting members of the House at the start of the 119th Congress was about 57.5 years. That’s a modest decrease in age from the median of the 118th Congress, which was 57.9 years at the Congress’ beginning. The median age of senators is significantly higher than the House’s at 64.7 years, but also a decline from the prior Congress, which had a median age of 65.3 at its start. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t significant outliers among members in both chambers who have crossed over into septuagenarian or even octogenarian status.  Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., 74, was also briefly hospitalized in July for being dehydrated. North Carolina’s Rep. Virginia Foxx, then 81, fell while walking down a marble staircase during the first day of the new Congress in January. Last December, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., then 84, suffered a hip injury while on a trip to Luxembourg. Pelosi, now 85, has filed to run for reelection in 2026. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., 83, who has announced he will not be seeking reelection, also fell in December, sustaining a sprained wrist in that incident. McConnell also was seen moving about in a wheelchair on the Senate side of the Capitol in March. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who will turn 92 in September, is the oldest member of Congress. The current Congress has also seen three vacancies occur this year as a result of the deaths of septuagenarian incumbent Reps. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., 75; Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., 77; and Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, 70. (Grijalva’s daughter just won a special party primary election to replace her father.) Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., 35, had challenged Connolly in December for the role of ranking member, the top Democrat spot, on the important House Oversight Committee, but was defeated.  “Tried my best. Sorry I couldn’t pull it through, everyone—we live to fight another day,” Ocasio-Cortez posted on social media after the vote. Connolly announced in late April that he would not be running for reelection and would soon be “stepping back” as ranking member of the Oversight Committee as a result of the return of his esophageal cancer. The Virginia congressman died on May 21.  Connolly was not the first Democrat member in recent years to have to give up a leadership position due to poor health. Rep. David Scott, D-Ga., 80, dropped out of the race to remain ranking member on the House Agriculture Committee in December. Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., 78, declined to seek reelection last year as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, and instead endorsed Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., 62, who ultimately succeeded him. This past May, more than half of the House Democrats who were 75 years old or older told Axios that they would seek reelection in 2026. That list included Rep. Dwight Evans, D-Pa., 71, who had to miss votes in 2024 after suffering a stroke, and Rep. John Larson, D-Conn., 76, who suffered a complex partial seizure during a speech on the House floor in February. Brooks Claims PBS Is For Giving Local News To Maine

New York Times columnist and the allegedly conservative half of PBS News Hour’s weekly Friday news recap, David Brooks, unleashed an unintentionally hilarious counterargument to Congress’s decision earlier in the week to rescind federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. According to Brooks, not only is PBS not on the left, but it also provides local news to the state of Maine. Brooks began innocently enough by recalling his previous life at National Review and how conservatives have been trying for decades to strip partisan liberal organizations of their federal funding. However, now, he sought to protect his own, “And so that defund the left, which conservatives have talked about since I was a baby pundit many centuries ago, now they're actually doing it. The problem is that, say — well, we’ll talk about ourselves, Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Republicans have been going after that since diapers, since we were all on diapers.”     He then added, “But there were always enough Republicans who understood what Jonathan just said, that, ‘Hey, I'm in Maine here, and I like having some local media.” And so there was always that rump that would stop it. But that rump is gone. And so all the defunding the left that conservatives have been dreaming about for decades, now they're doing it.’” The insinuation that if it weren’t for public broadcasting, Maine would be like some untouched tribe without the benefits of modern media is as hilarious as it is offensive. The Portland, Bangor, and Presque Isle markets all have private TV and radio options. Brooks also lamented that anyone would associate PBS with the left, “And I should say perceived left. It's not always that the institutions they think are left are left. And anybody who doesn't agree with them is left. And so they're having their way.” If a news organization is 27 times more likely to describe something as “far-right” than “far-left,” covers the Republican National Convention with 72 percent negativity compared to the Democratic National Convention at 88 percent positivity, and who’s “conservative” commentator voted for Barack Obama and still sounds like a liberal, then what is that if not a liberal outlet? Here is a transcript for the July 18 show: PBS News Hour 7/18/2025 7:44 PM ET DAVID BROOKS: And so that defund the left, which conservatives have talked about since I was a baby pundit many centuries ago, now they're actually doing it. Government broke the housing market — only this will fix it

If you’re frustrated with being unable to buy a home today, you’re not alone. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, homeownership affordability has been near an all-time low since 2023. The deadly combination of both home prices and interest rates skyrocketing broke the housing market, but simply lowering interest rates today won’t fix it.To understand why, it’s important to know what caused this housing affordability crisis. Over the last several years, the federal government spent trillions of dollars it didn’t have in the world’s largest-ever borrowing binge. The money came from the Federal Reserve, which created those trillions of dollars out of nothing, depressing interest rates. The real solution is not to manipulate rates lower and spawn further inflation, but to get government out of the way so interest rates can come down naturally. The predictable result was a rapid devaluation of the dollar, manifesting as 40-year-high inflation, followed by the fastest rise in interest rates in just as long to cool off the inflation.Rates aren’t the problemNot only did home prices become stratospherically high relative to incomes, but financing costs became prohibitively expensive. Consequently, during the four years of the Biden administration, the monthly mortgage payment doubled on a median-priced home. For the housing market, this was a one-two punch that cratered affordability and consigned millions of Americans to renting for the foreseeable future. The Fed’s artificially low interest rates helped cause the problem in the first place. Home prices rose not only because the dollar lost value (taking more dollars to buy the same home), but also because lower interest rates meant potential home buyers could borrow more and bid up the price of homes. What’s most important to someone when considering buying a home is not the home’s price but the monthly mortgage payment. While the payment is clearly dependent on the whole price, interest rates are also a major factor. When those rates fell below 3%, people were willing to spend much more on the same home because the monthly payment didn’t change much.As the months passed, however, and the bidding wars continued, prices just kept rising. Once interest rates returned to more normal levels, everything fell apart as monthly mortgage payments exploded. It now takes over two-thirds of the median household’s take-home pay to afford a median-priced home.Historically, when interest rates rise, home prices fall, but that didn’t happen this time. So many people locked in home loans at interest rates below 4% — or even below 3% — that they can’t sell their homes today, because doing so would mean losing that interest rate and getting a new mortgage at 7%, 8%, or 9%.The only way to make the math work is if homeowners sell at a huge premium, giving a massive down payment on their next home, minimizing the amount borrowed at a higher rate, and therefore preventing their monthly payment from skyrocketing. The large and fast increases in interest rates pushed home prices even higher instead of lower.Get government out of the wayThe temptation today is for the Fed to simply lower the federal funds rate (its benchmark interest rate), under the assumption that such a move will push down interest rates throughout the economy, including mortgages. Sadly, instead of fixing the broken housing market, it would likely have the opposite effect.Last autumn, in a move that could only be described as blatant election interference, the federal funds rate was reduced when there was no empirical justification for doing so. But the move buoyed stock prices. Market participants saw through the charade and realized the artificially low rates would ultimately lead to more inflation, which prompted private market interest rates to rise.RELATED: Trump rips into Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not lowering interest rates and suggests he'll be fired soon Photo by e-crow via Getty ImagesLenders don’t like inflation because it reduces the value of the money being repaid in the future. To compensate, creditors demand a higher rate of return. That’s why the yield on Treasury debt at the end of last year jumped 100 basis points after the federal funds rate fell 100 basis points, demonstrating the Sisyphean nature of the problem.Additionally, interest rates and home prices have recoupled. If interest rates fall one or even two percentage points, that will again prompt potential home buyers to borrow more, thereby bidding up home prices again. Unless rates drop substantially more, existing homeowners will remain trapped by the golden handcuffs of their 2% or 3% interest rates. The real solution is not to manipulate rates lower and spawn further inflation, but to get government out of the way so those rates can come down naturally. If the government spent much less, then there would be less demand for borrowed money. Reducing demand in turn reduces the price, and the price for borrowed money is the interest rate.Profligate government spending broke the housing market. Only fiscal restraint at the federal level will fix the problem.
