Parents can imagine no greater love than our love for our children, and that love is what sent Barry Mason back into his burning home to save his precious son, Ethan Mason. The town of Wigan in Manchester, England, is grieving after an early morning fire on April 14 claimed the lives of a father and son. Witnesses saw 45-year-old Barry run back into the burning building to save his 4-year-old son. And dad Barry Mason lost his life while attempting to save his son. Following surgery, Ethan was placed in a medically induced coma while being treated. However, little Ethan died three days later on March 17, having sustained burns over 70% of his body. Detective Inspector Lee Gridley of the Greater Manchester Police's Wigan district told The Independent, "This is a devastating incident, and all of our thoughts are with the family of this young boy, who had his entire life ahead of him." A Tragedy for the Whole Community He continued, "Together with the earlier death, this is a tragedy for the Wigan community, and I know that many people will be shocked by this heartbreaking news. I hope people will join us in sending their absolute best wishes to all those involved in this incident as they begin their journey in the healing process." According to the Manchester Evening News, the blaze started in the home's kitchen around 2:30 a.m. Although police are investigating the fire, they do not believe it to be suspicious. Ethan's mom, Kelly Wilson Kupper, and her other children survived the tragic fire and are left to mourn and rebuild after losing so very much. Jessica Wilson, Kelly's sister, started a GoFundMe campaign to assist Kelly with the financial burdens that she faces in the midst of her tremendous grief. The fund has raised over 61,000 Euros, which equals approximately $66,000. Barry's family has described him as a "devoted daddy" and a "superhero." His sister-in-law Jessica shared on her Facebook post, "Barry, we are heartbroken. Such a gentle giant and a devoted daddy until your last breath. Words will never describe just how grateful we are to you, hold our baby tight up there." Ray found the idea of Dolly being locked up and alone for a few days heartbreaking. He wanted her to know she did indeed have a fur-ever home with him as soon as possible. Ray visited her every day until he was able to take her home. Finally, A Forever Home Even though their journey together hit a ruff patch, Ray knew the dog in Dollar General was meant to be his. He couldn't wait to give Dolly the best home possible. And they would be awesome paw-tners in shopping and in life. Despite the setback, Ray remained committed to his furry friend, visiting her regularly and promising to bring her home as soon as possible. School staff, students, and seniors enjoyed a fun and spirited meeting when Virginia second graders connected with their senior pen pals after writing to them throughout the school year! Several decades ago, finding and writing to a pen pal was a regular thing. Magazines helped teens locate pen pals in other states, and it was an exciting way to make friends in different parts of the country. Over time, our world became "smaller," and the practice became unnecessary and uncool. It's so easy to communicate with people across the globe through the internet and social media platforms. Teachers at Pearson's Corner Elementary School (PCES) in Mechanicsville, Virginia, introduced their students to the old tradition and added a fabulous new spin on it in the process. PCES staff paired students with residents at Hermitage Richmond Senior Living, and the students and their senior buddies have exchanged letters since September. Hermitage resident Daylon McCarty and eight-year-old Yosha Sreeraj met for the first time during the school's unique field trip. Daylon, who is seven decades older than her pen pal, is a former kindergarten teacher. She expressed her excitement for the project, saying, "I used to teach kindergarten. So I love to see them writing. It just helps them build their writing skills. And they asked me questions, and I asked them what they’ve been doing." She shared, "It gives them a reason to write. A different reason to write. And something that’s not just school-related. Wearing their PCES Panther t-shirts, students sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" before reading to the seniors, playing games, and visiting. This was the second year the school's second graders forged friendships with Hermitage residents. And it's been great for both young and old. Jennifer Norton, Hermitage's Director of Lifestyles and Wellness, said, "They have been writing each other back and forth since September. And so now they get to meet each other in person.
