EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans Unveil New Bill To Rename Dulles Airport After Trump

House Republicans are moving forward with a new bid to rebrand one of the major airports in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area to take on the name of President Donald Trump, The Daily Wire can exclusively reveal. Less than a week after Trump began his second term and declared that the “golden age of America” was beginning, freshman Rep. Addison McDowell (R-NC) unveiled a bill that would rename Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia as the Donald J. Trump International Airport. “We have entered the golden age of America largely thanks to President Trump’s leadership,” McDowell said in a statement. “It is only right that the two airports servicing our nation’s capital are duly honored and respected by two of the best presidents to have the honor of serving our great nation.” The bill, which can be seen here, is just two pages long. In one provision, it says Dulles Airport “shall after the date of the enactment of this Act be known and designated as the ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport.'” And, in a second part, it says “any reference in any law, regulation, map, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the airport referred to” in the first provision “shall be considered to be a reference to the Donald J. Trump International Airport.” Reps. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Brandon Gill (R-TX), Riley Moore (R-WV), and Brian Jack (R-GA) are joining McDowell in introducing the legislation. Reschenthaler led a previous endeavor to rename Dulles Airport after Trump in the last Congress, but his virtually-identical bill did not get any further than being referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. CELEBRATE #47 WITH 47% OFF DAILYWIRE+ MEMBERSHIPS + A FREE $20 GIFT With Republicans now in control of both chambers of Congress and Trump serving as president, the legislation could fare better this time around. “President Donald J. Trump, the greatest president of my lifetime, was just sworn into office for a second term after a historic landslide victory,” Reschenthaler declared in a statement. “This legislation will cement his status in our nation’s capital as our fearless commander-in-chief, extraordinary leader, and relentless champion for the American people.” Moore said: “President Trump has been the most consequential politician in my lifetime. His agenda to lift up the forgotten men and women of America reverberates so strongly with the people of my district and so many across the country. I’m proud to be co-leading this bill with Congressman McDowell and hope to see it voted on the floor of the People’s House soon.” Dulles Airport, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2022, was named after Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who served under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The last time Republicans moved to rename Dulles Airport after Trump, Democrats lashed out at the proposal. “This idea is ridiculous, but sadly real,” now-former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat running to become Virginia governor, said in a post to X. “Congress must act on pressing issues like reauthorizing the FAA and passing the national security supplemental. Yet this is what a Member of House Republican leadership focuses on — renaming Virginia’s Dulles airport after Trump.” In anticipation of another political clash, McDowell quipped to The Daily Wire: “Democrats are all for changing genders — so why not change the name of an airport? Honoring President Trump’s legacy at Dulles is an easy decision. Democrats want to change the names of genders — Republicans want to honor real leadership, easy enough.”

‘They Should Not Have Been Prosecuted’: Trump Pardons 23 Pro-Lifers Targeted By Biden DOJ

‘They Should Not Have Been Prosecuted’: Trump Pardons 23 Pro-Lifers Targeted By Biden DOJ

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday pardoning 23 of the pro-life activists targeted by President Joe Biden’s Justice Department. “They should not have been prosecuted,” Trump said as he signed the order. “Many of them are elderly people. They should not have been prosecuted. This is a great honor to sign this.” The pardons are for 23 “peaceful pro-life protesters who were prosecuted by the Biden administration for exercising their First Amendment rights.” They were prosecuted under the FACE Act and a Reconstruction-era felony conspiracy charge first used for the first time against pro-life activists by the Biden administration. The Thomas More Society, the law firm representing the activists, had asked Trump to pardon 21 pro-lifers: Joan Bell, Coleman Boyd, Joel Curry, Jonathan Darnel, Eva Edl, Chester Gallagher, William Goodman, Dennis Green, Lauren Handy, Paulette Harlow, John Hinshaw, Heather Idoni, Jean Marshall, Fr. Fidelis Moscinski, Justin Phillips, Paul Place, Paul Vaughn, Bevelyn Beatty Williams, Calvin Zastrow, Eva Zastrow, and James Zastrow.  (Photo by ROBERTO SCHMIDT/AFP via Getty Images) “Today, freedom rings in our great nation,” said Steve Crampton, senior counsel for the Thomas More Society. “The heroic peaceful pro-lifers unjustly imprisoned by Biden’s Justice Department will now be freed and able to return home to their families, eat a family meal, and enjoy the freedom that should have never been taken from them in the first place.” Peter Breen, the executive vice president of the firm, added: “Today is a new day for the pardoned pro-life advocates who have suffered FBI raids, federal prosecutions, and severe punishment for peacefully and courageously witnessing for life. We thank President Trump for keeping his promise to these pro-life mothers, fathers, grandparents, pastors, and priests.” “What happened to these peaceful pro-life individuals must never happen again,” he said in a statement. “We urge Congress to act swiftly in repealing the FACE Act to make sure that the Justice Department can never again weaponize this law to target peaceful pro-lifers with severe charges.”  Many of those pardoned were convicted multiple times in trials in Washington, D.C., Nashville, Manhattan, and Detroit. While sentencing has not been completed in each case, several pro-lifers were already serving lengthy prison sentences.  In D.C., a group of pro-life protesters sang songs, prayed, locked arms in front of the facility’s staff entrance, and attached themselves with ropes and chains to block doors inside the infamous Surgi-Clinic in October 2020, a late-term abortion facility.  Those who were imprisoned over the D.C. protest include Lauren Handy (57 months in prison), John Hinshaw (21 months), William Goodman (27 months), Jonathan Darnell (34 months), Herb Geraghty (27 months), Jean Marshall (24 months), Joan Bell (27 months), Paulette Harlow (24 months), and Heather Idoni (24 months). In Tennessee, a group of pro-life Christians gathered in a hall outside the Carafem Health Center in Mt. Juliet where they sang hymns, prayed, and urged women not to get abortions in March 2021. Calvin Zastrow, 63, is currently serving a six-month prison sentence over the protest and 75-year-old Chester Gallagher was sentenced to 16 months though he has not had to report to prison yet.  In New York, Bevelyn Beatty Williams was sentenced to serve 41 months in prison after she was convicted of violating the FACE Act after she blocked the entrance to an abortion facility in Manhattan.  The pardons also bring relief to those who were awaiting sentencing, including 89-year-old Eva Edl. Edl, who survived a World War II-era Yugoslavian concentration camp, was convicted in both Nashville and Detroit and could have been sentenced to over a decade in prison over her convictions on FACE and a felony conspiracy charge. When passed in 1994, the FACE Act was supposed to protect both churches and clinics, but the law has almost exclusively been used to prosecute pro-lifers. Data obtained by Roy shows that 97% of FACE Act cases brought by the Justice Department have been against pro-life Americans. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) renewed an effort to repeal the FACE Act this week, pointing out how it has been disproportionately used against pro-lifers.  The response to the pardons has already been positive with Republican lawmakers and conservative activists praising the decision. “President Trump’s pardon today of pro-life activists unjustly imprisoned under President Biden is a great credit to his legacy,” CatholicVote’s Tommy Valentine said. “We hope he will go a step further in undoing Biden’s unjust legacy by directing his Department of Justice to evenly enforce the FACE Act, for as long as it is on the books, against violent pro-abortion extremists who have been attacking pregnancy resource centers and churches for years.” The news came shortly after the Daily Wire reported that Trump would pardon the pro-life activists within a matter of days. The plight of the imprisoned pro-lifers is an immediate priority to Trump’s team, two sources with knowledge of the matter shared with The Daily Wire. Friday is the 52nd annual March for Life, where Vice President JD Vance will publicly speak for the first time since he was sworn into office, as The Daily Wire first reported on Thursday. This is a breaking story; please refresh this page for updates.

Trump Wages All Out War On DEI

For those who are fans of DEI, yesterday will go down in infamy. It was, you might say, the DEI Pearl Harbor. At 5:00pm, all DEI offices within the federal government closed down. Employees were put on leave, as the first step towards mass-layoffs. The DEI section of every major federal website went offline. The heads of every DEI office in the federal government were rounded up, chained to giant boulders, and tossed into the sea. That last part didn’t happen, but a man can dream. Back in reality, however, the Office of Personnel Management sent out a notice to the head of every federal agency, instructing them to ask employees, “if they know of any efforts to disguise” DEI programs or personnel in the federal government. Employees have 10 days to disclose any disguised DEI programs or personnel that they’re aware of. Almost immediately, one of these disguises became pretty apparent. It was visible to anyone who checked out the Leadership page of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Specifically, there was an unusual change to the title of one senior official at the ATF. Here’s how the bureau’s leadership page looked at the beginning of the week: Screenshot: ATF As you can see, a woman named “Lisa T. Boykin” is listed as the Chief Diversity Officer at the ATF. Why does the ATF need a Chief Diversity Officer? What was this person doing every day? Well, who knows. She was collecting a paycheck, at least. We know that. Now that’s supposed to change. But the only change the ATF actually made was in the meaningless title they gave this person. Sometime in the last 48 hours, the page changed. Here’s what the ATF’s Leadership Page looks like now: Screenshot: ATF Now Lisa Boykin is merely a, “Senior executive.” She’s no longer the “Chief Diversity Officer.” Overnight, she has been graced with a much more generic, completely inconspicuous title. There was no press release about this. They just changed it. Check back tomorrow and the ATF will probably put fake glasses and a mustache on Lisa Boykin and claim her name is really “Larry Soykin” or something. These DEI activists aren’t completely out of ideas. But very soon, they will be completely out of the federal government — at least, that’s the plan. As recently as a few months ago, a purge like this seemed very difficult to imagine. And it was particularly hard for people on the Left to imagine. When we filmed “Am I Racist?“, the DEI activists we spoke to — from Robin DiAngelo on down — were overconfident to the point of absurdity. That’s one of the reasons we were able to make the film. People always ask how we managed to get the race hustlers and DEI scammers in a room with us. The answer is that we used their own egos and false sense of security against them. They just couldn’t imagine that anyone would ever challenge them or try to embarrass them. That’s the bubble they were in. And now it’s safe to say that the bubble has been pretty well popped. MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ NOW STREAMING ON DAILYWIRE+ Now, in fact, their entire industry is crashing down — and not just in the government. The executive orders that Donald Trump has signed are far broader than that. One of the orders, for example, is entitled, “ENDING ILLEGAL DISCRIMINATION AND RESTORING MERIT-BASED OPPORTUNITY.” And this order explicitly applies to DEI in the private sector. I further order all agencies to enforce our longstanding civil-rights laws and to combat illegal private-sector DEI preferences, mandates, policies, programs, and activities. … Each agency shall identify up to nine potential civil compliance investigations of publicly traded corporations, large non-profit corporations or associations, foundations with assets of 500 million dollars or more, State and local bar and medical associations, and institutions of higher education with endowments over 1 billion dollars. In other words, the federal government is gearing up to launch investigations into private-sector entities — whether they’re a university or a hospital or a corporation — that engage in DEI. According to the order, that includes any organization that employs, “dangerous, demeaning, and immoral race- and sex-based preferences.” The order goes on to revoke an executive order signed by President Lyndon Johnson, which required that federal contractors and the federal government take affirmative action to boost certain candidates based on race, color, religion, and national origin. This has been the law of the land for generations, and no Republican president until now has considered the possibility of ending it. But this time around, the second Trump administration came prepared. It’s one of the first things they got rid of. WATCH: The Matt Walsh Show And the importance of that decision can’t be overstated. For decades, the requirement that federal contractors practice affirmative action has forced companies to compare their workforce with the demographic composition of the surrounding community. And then they had to alter their hiring practices to try to find more so-called minority candidates. It’s led to an enormous amount of fraud and waste and inefficiency — and that’s not even getting into how unethical and unconstitutional it was. But that’s all gone now, at least at the federal level. Trump’s order forbids the federal government from, “allowing or encouraging federal contractors and subcontractors to engage in workforce balancing based on race, color, sex, sexual preference, religion, or national origin.” Additionally, all federal agencies have to require every grant recipient to, “certify that it does not operate any programs promoting DEI that violate any applicable Federal anti-discrimination laws.” Within 120 days, the attorney general will also outline requirements for colleges and universities, concerning their DEI programs. This is obviously a sweeping order — one that affects hundreds of billions of dollars in government spending. It’s very bad news for universities like Harvard, and other bastions of Left-wing orthodoxy. It’s the kind of order that you’d expect would lead to a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth on the Left. And certainly that is happening to some extent. But there’s been an interesting wrinkle. As Chris Rufo reported yesterday: “Tech executives are telling me that Silicon Valley companies will respect President Trump’s ban on discriminatory DEI. Many feel relieved that they don’t have to pretend anymore. ‘Resistance here is basically dead.'” In other words, according to Rufo’s reporting, these executives were experiencing a kind of Stockholm Syndrome for the past several years. They knew that DEI was destructive for their business. They wanted it to go away. But they felt they had no choice but to endorse it, because on top of the legal requirements, they didn’t want to upset Left-wing activists and the corporate media. They lacked the spine to stand up for their own business interests. They felt trapped, so they went along with it. This may sound like convenient excuse-making, but it actually sounds very plausible. After all, tech companies care the most about making money. You don’t become a tech billionaire without understanding how to turn a profit. DEI is obviously and self-evidently bad for business because it forces you to hire people who are not qualified for the job. It actually makes perfect sense that these companies would be relieved to be done with it. It’s not an excuse, though. If anything it just makes them look worse. DEI proliferated not because all of these companies believed in it. But because they were all cowards who didn’t have the gumption to speak out, even for the sake of their own economic self-preservation. It’s worth asking whether this response applies to the Left more broadly. One of the most fascinating things about Trump’s full scale assault on gender ideology and DEI in government is the relative lack of Left-wing hysteria over it. Certainly there has been plenty of whining and scolding about it. But there haven’t been protests in the street or widespread panic. The outrage — from my vantage point — hasn’t quite reached the fever pitch you would have expected. Even the media, from what I can tell, seems to be relatively muted (by their very low standards) in their reaction. Here for example is a decidedly low-energy segment from MSNBC the other day. You’d think they’d be up grabbing their pitchforks because of the return of fascism to America. But instead, this is what they came up with: So they certainly don’t approve of Trump’s policies. But you wouldn’t call that a hysterical meltdown. The anchor cites that fake McKinsey study about how DEI supposedly improves companies, which we’ve talked about and debunked many times before. And then the reporter says conservatives want to take us back to colorblind, merit-driven society, as if that’s a bad thing. But it is, again, a bit low energy. Contrast this with the hysteria in the days after Trump’s first inauguration, and there’s really no comparison. Back then, everything Trump did was part of a Russian plot to destroy American democracy. Everything was cause for panic. Everything was a five alarm fire. This has been the response to pretty much all of Trump’s executive orders — from his order ending DEI at the FAA, to his order declaring that indeed, there are only two genders, and that gender ideology is dead. This is the most far reaching executive assault on Left-wing ideology ever launched by any president. There isn’t a close second. It is truly unprecedented. And yet the Left’s reaction hasn’t matched the moment. Especially by their normal standards of hysteria. Why is that? The lack of mass protests in the street may be easy enough to explain. It’s very cold. We know that Left-wing activists are very dedicated to their causes, as long as that dedication doesn’t require them to endure even the slightest bit of discomfort. Also you’d probably have to pay the protesters more than their usual rate, given the weather conditions. Maybe it’s more than George Soros is willing to shell out. But that’s not the whole story. There is also, as we’ve discussed this week, a kind of emotional burnout. The Left has been screaming hysterically about Trump for ten years. It’s just not possible to keep up that level of performative outrage indefinitely. Eventually you lose a bit of steam. On top of that, the Left is in organizational and ideological disarray. They have no clear leader. No clear agenda. No clear political identity. All of that serves to mute the response to these moves by Trump. But on top of all of those factors, I also have to wonder if at least some on the Left are maybe, to some extent, even if subconsciously, sort of relieved to be done with DEI, gender ideology, and the rest. After all, these things are so absurd on their face that almost no one could have ever really, truly believed in them. Almost no one wants to be in the position of having to defend some crossdressing man who’s crying because he can’t disrobe in the women’s changing room. Almost no one actually thinks it’s a good idea to prioritize diversity in air traffic control hiring. DEI and gender ideology require a suspension of basic common sense so extreme that few people could ever achieve it. Everyone else was just pretending. We have suffered through an era of American history where millions of people were pretending to believe the most absurd propositions ever put forward. Now that the cultural tide has changed, the pressure to pretend has been greatly lifted. The true believers in DEI and gender ideology now look around to discover that they are without allies. Trans activists and DEI race hustlers were holding all of those people hostage. But the Right’s political and cultural victories have taken away their ammunition. It is hard to keep your hostages in line when they find out that your gun has no bullets. In other words, for some who ostensibly appeared to be “on the Left,” we are their liberators. That’s just a theory anyway. I believe there’s an element of this, at least for some on the Left. I certainly think it’s the case for business owners and corporate America. But regardless, one thing we know for sure is that this somewhat eerie lull won’t last. The true believers and powers that be on that side of the fence aren’t going to abandon their agenda. They won’t surrender to the Right and call it a day. They’ll regroup and probably come back with something even crazier than DEI and gender ideology. That’s what we can assume, if history is our guide. And it should be. In the meantime, the fact is that pretty much everyone in this country — including anyone who flies on a plane, who sends a child to college, or applies for a job or a federal contract — is already benefiting from the second Trump administration. This is the swift restoration of sanity that a majority of Americans voted for. Common sense has made a comeback. Team Sanity is winning for the moment. But Team Insanity will be back. And it’s up to us to be ready for them.

‘Everything Will Be Revealed’: Trump Declassifies JFK, RFK, And MLK Jr. Assassination Files

President Donald Trump signed an order on Thursday to declassify the assassination files of former President John F. Kennedy, former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. As he signed the order, Trump said, “A lot of people have been waiting for this for years, for decades. And everything will be revealed.” The president then instructed his aide to give the pen he signed the order with to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary and the son of RFK and nephew of JFK. WATCH: BREAKING: President Trump signs an Executive Order to declassify the JFK, RFK, and MLK Jr. filespic.twitter.com/X0GwLocBnS — Daily Wire (@realDailyWire) January 23, 2025 When more JFK files were made public in 2022, the National Archives and Records Administration said 97% of the roughly 5 million pages were public, but around 3,000 documents remained classified and another 30,000 had redactions, CBS News reported. Trump has promised since his first term in office to make all of the files public. Questions have swirled for decades around President Kennedy’s assassination, which occurred in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. CELEBRATE #47 WITH 47% OFF DAILYWIRE+ MEMBERSHIPS + A FREE $20 GIFT “More than 50 years after the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Federal Government has not released to the public all of its records related to those events. Their families and the American people deserve transparency and truth. It is in the national interest to finally release all records related to these assassinations without delay,” Trump’s executive order states. All records relating to JFK’s assassination were to be made public by 2017 as specified by the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, but Trump “accepted proposed redactions from executive departments and agencies (agencies) in 2017 and 2018” while ordering “the continued re-evaluation of those remaining redactions.” Former President Joe Biden then allowed agencies to take additional time to review the files and withhold information from the public. “I have now determined that the continued redaction and withholding of information from records pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is not consistent with the public interest and the release of these records is long overdue,” Trump’s order continues. “And although no Act of Congress directs the release of information pertaining to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I have determined that the release of all records in the Federal Government’s possession pertaining to each of those assassinations is also in the public interest.” Per the order, the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General will have 15 days to “present a plan to the President for the full and complete release of records relating to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy” and 45 days to “review records related to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and present a plan to the President for the full and complete release of these records.”

‘They Should Not Have Been Prosecuted’: Trump Pardons Pro-Lifers Convicted Under FACE Act

President Donald Trump pardoned 23 pro-lifers who were convicted for actions including praying outside abortion clinics and encouraging women in unplanned pregnancies to choose life. “They should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people. They should not have been prosecuted,” the president said. “This is a great honor to sign this,” he said. After Trump signed, he added, “They’ll be very happy.” The pardons came one day before the 52nd annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. Since 2021, the Biden-Harris administration’s Justice Department has brought criminal or civil cases under the Freedom of Clinic Access, or FACE Act, against at least 50 pro-life advocates. Twenty-one were convicted and ten are incarcerated. Three were imprisoned and released. BREAKING: President Trump pardons 23 peaceful pro-life protestors who were prosecuted under the FACE Act, calling the prosecutions, “ridiculous.”It’s time to REPEAL the FACE Act! pic.twitter.com/QpJs9oVALi— Heritage Foundation (@Heritage) January 23, 2025 Former President Joe Biden’s critics accused him and his DOJ of weaponizing the FACE Act against pro-lifers while failing to charge pro-abortion criminals for the hundreds of attacks on pregnancy resource centers since the May 2022 leak of the draft Supreme Court opinion indicating Roe would soon be overturned. Trump indicated during his campaign he would pardon these pro-lifers quickly upon assuming office. “Many people are in jail over this,” Trump said in June at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference. “We’re going to get that taken care of immediately [on the] first day.” Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, both Republicans, are leading the charge in Congress to repeal the FACE Act so it can’t be weaponized against pro-lifers in future Democrat administrations. Ninety-seven percent of FACE Act prosecutions between the years of 1994-2024 were initiated against pro-life Americans. Some of the convicted pro-life activists are represented by the Thomas More Society, a Chicago-based conservative public interest law firm. The firm’s general counsel, Andrew Bath, said the law has been “egregiously abused” and “weaponized.” “On its face, you would look at it and say that it protects abortion clinics and pregnancy resource centers and churches equally,” Bath told The Daily Signal in November. “But it hasn’t been used that way. It’s been applied almost exclusively against pro-lifers, and it’s been weaponized, and this weapon has to be removed from the arsenal of those who are willing to abuse government power.” Many of the now-pardoned pro-lifers have told The Daily Signal they were confident Trump would make good on his promise to pardon them, and that God would use their incarceration for his glory in the meantime. “He does what he says he’s gonna do too, so that’s one of the reasons I trust him,” 75-year-old Paulette Harlow told The Daily Signal in December. “I like when somebody does what they say they’re gonna do.” Harlow was sentenced to house arrest for violating the FACE Act due to her chronic health conditions. “We are thankful that God has stirred the president to pardon those unjustly punished for Jan. 6 and to quickly dismantle the wickedness of DEI and the transgender agenda in our federal government,” Coleman Boyd, who was sentenced to house arrest for a FACE violation, told The Daily Signal on Wednesday. “We trust God to to accomplish what is needful on our behalf.” This is a breaking news article and it may be updated. Trump Declassifies Files on JFK, RFK, MLK Assassinations

Update: President Donald Trump signed an executive order declassifying files about the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Their families and the American people deserve transparency and truth.  It is in the national interest to finally release all records related to these assassinations without delay,” states the executive order signed by the president. President Trump Orders Historic Transparency: JFK, RFK, and MLK Files to be Declassified“This is a big one. A lot of people have been waiting for this for years, for decades. Everything will be revealed.” –President Trump pic.twitter.com/iYfF7huHj9— The White House (@WhiteHouse) January 23, 2025 President Donald Trump is slated to declassify files and documents relating to the assassinations of famous Americans “in the coming days.” In a speech shortly before his inauguration, Trump vowed transparency from his administration, pledging to declassify and release to the public information on the deaths of President John F. Kennedy, his brother and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and activist Martin Luther King Jr. The 47th president declared: “As a first step toward restoring transparency and accountability to government, we will also reverse the overclassification of government documents, and in the coming days, we are going to make public remaining records relating to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other topics of great public interest. It’s all going to be released, Uncle Sam.” Following the attempt on his life in July of last year, Trump promised that he would form a commission on assassination attempts, tasked with publishing documents related to John F. Kennedy’s death. The announcement came as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—whose uncle and father were both assassinated—endorsed Trump for president. “Soon after I was—I can’t even believe I have to say this—nearly assassinated in Pennsylvania last month, Bobby called me to express his best wishes. He knows firsthand the risks incurred by leaders who stand up to the corrupt political establishment,” Trump stated. He continued, “And when you stand up, you bring on some trouble for yourself, but you have to do what’s right. You have to do what’s right for the country. I’ll tell you, we are both in this to do what’s right for the country.” President John F. Kennedy was notoriously assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, while riding through Dallas in a presidential motorcade. Robert F. Kennedy was slain at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968, while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has insisted that the CIA was involved in the assassination of his uncle. “There is overwhelming evidence that the CIA was involved in his murder,” he said in a 2023 interview. “I think it’s beyond a reasonable doubt at this point.” However, this is not the first time that Trump has promised to share information related to the Kennedy assassinations. During his first administration, Trump did release a number of documents related to JFK’s death but ultimately acceded to the advice of CIA and FBI officials who claimed that releasing more information to the public could pose a national security risk. CIA spokeswoman Nicole de Haay said at the time, in 2018, that the agency “narrowly redacted information in rare instances only to protect CIA assets, officers and their families as well as intelligence methods, operations and partnerships that remain critical to the security of our nation.” In 1992, the U.S. Congress passed the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act, which stipulated that all records pertaining to the assassination must be made public within 25 years, or by Oct. 26, 2017. According to the act, the president is given authority to keep certain records sealed past that date. Trump discussed his decision not to publish all files related to the Kennedy assassination in his appearance on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast in November, on the eve of the election. “I was met with … people that were well-meaning. [Former Secretary of State and CIA Director] Mike Pompeo was one of them, he’s a good person. They called me [and] said, ‘Sir, we’d rather have you not,’” Trump recounted of his decision, adding that a “Martin Luther King file” also exists. He continued, “So I said, ‘Well, we’ll close it for another time.’ But if I win, I’m just going to open them up.” When asked why he did not declassify the remaining files during his first term but is open to doing so in his second, Trump replied, “People that are still living, there are people that are affected.” He added, “I think it’s going to be just fine to open it. Let me put it that way, it’s going to be fine. I think it’s time. It’s a cleansing. … So, I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it immediately, almost immediately upon entering office.” Although the CIA claimed during Trump’s first term that 99% of documents related to the Kennedy assassination had been declassified and released, Trump estimated on Rogan’s podcast that he only declassified 50% of the Kennedy files. Can Brent Bozell and Kari Lake ‘Make Media Great Again’ at Broadcast Agencies?

Four years ago, immediately upon taking office, President Joe Biden told the CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media to resign or be fired. Biden’s request, which Michael Pack honored at 2 p.m. Jan. 20, 2021, demonstrated his administration’s urgency to reassert control over the federal agency that operates government-funded media outlets broadcasting internationally.  Pack, a documentary filmmaker and former president and CEO of the Claremont Institute, served only seven months in the role when Biden ordered him gone. Originally nominated by President Donald Trump in June 2018, Pack’s nomination lingered in the U.S. Senate. He was confirmed, 53-38, in June 2020. Days into his second term, Trump already appears intent on moving quickly to refocus USAGM on its mission of promoting freedom and democracy around the world. On Tuesday, he tapped L. Brent Bozell III, founder and president of the Media Research Center, to be the agency’s new CEO. In December, Trump announced Kari Lake, a former TV news anchor from Arizona, as his nominee to lead Voice of America, one of the entities USAGM oversees. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that “few understand the Global Media landscape in print, television, and online better than Brent. He and his family have fought for the American principles of Liberty, Freedom, Equality, and Justice for generations, and he will ensure that message is heard by Freedom-loving people around the World. Brent will bring some much needed change to the U.S. Agency for Global Media.” I am honored to be chosen by President Trump to serve as the next CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media. There is lots of work to be done. I look forward to meeting with Senators ahead of my confirmation hearing to explore how best to ensure the priorities of the President… pic.twitter.com/2x3zC4lt19— Brent Bozell (@BrentBozell) January 23, 2025 Bozell will be charged with reforming a troubled agency, and noted as much in a post on X.  “I am honored to be chosen by President Trump to serve as the next CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media,” Bozell posted. “There is lots of work to be done. I look forward to meeting with Senators ahead of my confirmation hearing to explore how best to ensure the priorities of the President are met.” Bozell’s watchdog organization is a frequent critic of legacy media outlets and Lake has also called out reporters. Trump’s selections are already prompting howls from anonymously quoted sources—and fears that Senate Democrats might use tactics to delay the confirmation process. A History of Agency Troubles A seemingly small but oft-criticized agency, USAGM was reorganized during President Barack Obama’s administration in 2016. Pack was the first CEO to serve in the newly created role, charged with reforming the international media outlets that faced scrutiny for promoting liberal or anti-American bias even though its congressional charter required independence and objectivity.  During Trump’s first term, VOA staffers accused Trump of wanting to subvert the objectivity.  Biden nominated Amanda Bennett, a former editor of Bloomberg News, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and Lexington Herald-Leader, as the current CEO of the Agency for Global Media in November 2021. The Senate didn’t confirm Bennett until September 2022 on a vote of 60-36. USAGM is responsible for two federal entities—VOA and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting—and five nonprofit organizations, which include Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Open Technology Fund, and Frontline Media Fund. Before Biden fired him, Pack attempted to reform the global media agency and made several notable firings. However, a federal judge overturned his decisions, hampering his ability to make personnel changes.  Security and Financial Concerns Employees of USAGM maintain access to government buildings, sensitive files, information technology systems, and high-ranking U.S. government officials.  Last summer, the House Foreign Affairs Committee released a report that found whistleblower allegations of abuse by a senior agency executive had merit, including using taxpayer funds for personal travel, falsified educational credentials, and favoritism. An independent audit of the USAGM for fiscal years 2021 and 2022 found deficiencies in internal controls over financial reporting.  In 2021, the State Department’s Office of Inspector General found deficiencies in personnel and background investigations. A joint audit in 2020 by the Office of Personnel Management and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence found the agency has failed for a decade to adequately vet staff, creating a systemic security risk. Also in 2020, a former contracting officer with the broadcasting agency pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States through bribery and wire fraud.  In 2019, the global media agency suspended a reporter and a cameraman amid allegations they faked a mortar attack in Nicaragua. That same year, Haroon Ullah, the agency’s former chief strategy officer, pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing more than $40,000 in government property.  In 2018, the government fired or disciplined 15 VOA journalists for accepting bribes from a Nigerian government official. The bribes came in “brown envelopes,” according to the audit.  In 2017, Voice of America disciplined three Chinese journalists working for VOA’s Mandarin service, siding with China’s government and killing a broadcast with an interview critical of the Chinese Communist Party.  The inspector general revealed in 2014 that the agency awarded contracts based on personal connections and hired contractors without prior approval, inappropriately spending hundreds of thousands of dollars. USAGM did not respond to an inquiry from The Daily Signal for this story. Trump’s New Media Team Bozell has a big task ahead of him once confirmed by the Senate. He founded the Media Research Center in 1987 to document liberal bias at a time when there was little alternative to the mainstream media. Bozell has also been a nationally syndicated columnist, and the author or co-author of multiple books. Bozell also founded the Parents Television Council in 1998 and For America in 2010. His father, L. Brent Bozell Jr., was also prominent in the conservative movement. He is the nephew of conservative icon William F. Buckley. National radio host Erick Erickson, posted, “It is always great to see good things happen to good people. Brent is fantastic and will be great in this. What a fantastic appointment.” It is always great to see good things happen to good people. Brent is fantastic and will be great in this. What a fantastic appointment. https://t.co/nerXsP6AIT— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) January 23, 2025 Also, Chris Plante, a Newsmax TV host and radio host posted, “Well deserved! Congratulations my friend.” Lake posted on X, “Congratulations, @BrentBozell. I’m looking forward to working with you. Let’s Make Media Great Again!” Congratulations, @BrentBozell. I’m looking forward to working with you.Let’s Make Media Great Again! https://t.co/QWL0pFybDP— Kari Lake (@KariLake) January 23, 2025 Lake’s position doesn’t require Senate approval. She must win the support of the bipartisan International Broadcasting Advisory Board, a seven-member panel responsible for hiring and firing the VOA director. Michael Abramowitz, the former president of Freedom House, has served in the role of VOA director for less than a year. A former Republican candidate for governor and Senate in Arizona, Lake began her broadcasting career in the 1990s..  Trump said that Lake would “ensure that the American values of Freedom and Liberty are broadcast around the World FAIRLY and ACCURATELY, unlike the lies spread by the Fake News Media.” Lake said she plans to bring reforms to the news organization. “@VOANews is a vital international media outlet dedicated to advancing the interests of the United States by engaging directly with people across the globe and promoting democracy and truth,” Lake said. “With an audience of 326 million people, Voice of America delivers information in 48 languages. Under my leadership, the VOA will excel in its mission: chronicling America’s achievements worldwide.” President Gerald Ford signed VOA’s charter in 1976. Congress increased the VOA editorial independence in 1994 and again in 2020. The charter states that Voice of America “will serve as a consistently reliable and authoritative source of news. It will be accurate, objective and comprehensive.” It further says it will be a “balanced and comprehensive projection of significant American thought and institutions.” VOA could broadcast editorial comment advocating existing U.S. policy, as the charter says it will “clearly and effectively, and will also present responsible discussions and opinion on these policies.”  During Trump’s first term, the White House issued a statement in 2020 that said, “Voice of America spends your money to speak for authoritarian regimes,” regarding the perceived pro-China coverage.  The post Can Brent Bozell and Kari Lake ‘Make Media Great Again’ at Broadcast Agencies? appeared first on The Daily Signal.
