Americans in U.S. Open Finals!

With a roar and a mighty overhead smash Aryna Sabalenka announced there would be no all-American women’s final at the U.S. Open. She put an end to Emma Navarro’s Cinderella run to the semis, dictating with power and precision through the second set tiebreak. The Australian Open winner and world no. 2 was, to be sure, expected be playing on the last day of the Grand Slam season, but this U.S. Open has been so full of surprises that, ya never know, Miss Navarro might pull another upset. She played with what the audiences here have come to recognize as a unique combination of elegance and intelligence, and if she could not turn back Miss Sabalenka’s deep powerful groundstrokes and huge serve in the first set, she did make it more competitive than the score, 6-2, might suggest, keeping rallies going and placing adroit winners. If the hope of an all-American women’s final dashed, Jessica Pegula pulled off one of the great rallies of the fortnight, as she rallied after being completely outplayed in the first set of her semi-final match against Karolina Muchova. Hanging on to a serve that had been problematic in the first week, inspired no doubt by her upset of the favorite, Iga Swiatek, in the quarter-finals, Miss Pegula found her feet, her long strokes, and above all her will and disrupted Miss Muchova’s beautifully effective combination of net-approaches, volleys, and high-pace forehands. It was a great and deserved win for the humble girl from Buffalo, N.Y., who had never got past a quarter-final on the Slam circuit (she has however been in every one this year). Between Jessica Pegula’s win and Emma Navarro, American women’s tennis continues to show its depth and strength. Following a long drought, American men, as well, are in deep in the second week, and there will be an American man in the final for the first time since Andy Roddick in 2003, as one of the semis is between Marylander Frances Tiafoe and Califonian Taylor Fritz. Stay tuned for the finals: Can Jessica find a way to disrupt Aryna? Can either Big Foe of Taylor out play Jannik Sinner, assuming he beats the surging Britisher, Jack Draper? What someone over at the Mets, who play across the street, once noted applies as well at Flushing Meadows: the drama is never over, until it’s over. German police covered up rape at bathhouse
Published 6 September 2024 at 13:47
Foreign Affairs. German police are accused of a cover-up after taking three weeks to report a rape that took place in a bathhouse against a 12-year-old girl, the local newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitungreveals . There is now speculation that the cover-up was because the perpetrator was Arab.

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped at a bathhouse in Braunschweig, Germany. A 15-year-old Arab boy is suspected of first molesting the girl in the pool and then raping her in a changing room.
The incident took place on 10 August, but it took three weeks for the information to become public, with police stating that they did not immediately release information ‘because of the girl's young age’.
The case became known after a reader contacted the local newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung, which then asked questions of the authorities.
A spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office, Christian Wolters, explained that the investigation is still at an early stage and that evidence collection is ongoing.
Police have identified the suspected offender and taken his personal details, but no legal action has yet been taken against him.
He has been assigned a lawyer and the authorities have not decided to detain him. The management of the bathhouse has announced that the suspect will be banned from entering as soon as they have received the necessary information.
The incident has sparked political debate and critics have expressed concern that serious crimes do not receive enough attention when the perpetrators are immigrants.
Local politicians are now calling for a sharper discussion on how these incidents are handled, especially when immigrants are involved, writes the Braunschweiger Zeitung.

Mr. Wonderful: Blue States Uninvestable

from Moonbattery: Detroit was once the wealthiest city in the USA. Then came moonbattery. The Paris of the Midwest succumbed to the Democrat Death Spiral, whereby liberal policies drive out productive citizens and investment, leaving behind an ever more toxic concentration of government-dependent losers who vote for ever more pernicious left-wing politicians. Rather than learning a lesson […]

The First Ten Minutes – “The Illusion of Choice”

from The Conservative Treehouse: Watch the first 10 to 12 minutes.  Or watch more if you like, but from my position (having spent 15 years calling this out day-by-day as it takes place in real time) the first ten minutes are pretty cool to see being said eloquently and publicly. Economist Eric Weinstein says he […]
