Colorado Democrat lawmakers appeared to smear parental rights groups who oppose a radical new transgender bill, comparing the bill’s critics to “the KKK” during a Tuesday committee hearing. The “Kelly Loving Act” targets parents who do not affirm their child’s new gender identity. In child custody decisions, “a court shall consider deadnaming, misgendering, or threatening to publish material related to an individual’s gender-affirming health-care services as types of coercive control,” the bill reads. “Coercive control” also includes things like threatening to kill someone or forcing someone to commit crimes under Colorado law. The bill was introduced late Friday evening, and on Tuesday it passed the Colorado Assembly’s Judiciary Committee in a 7-4 vote. It now heads to the Assembly floor for a second reading. During Tuesday’s hearing, state Rep. Jarvis Caldwell, a Republican, told Democrats that he was up until 1 a.m. reading the bill. Federal immigration enforcement agents arrested over three dozen illegal aliens who they say submitted fraudulent documents to illegally gain employment at a roofing company in northern Washington state. A total of 37 illegal aliens were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Mt. Baker Roofing warehouse in Bellingham, Washington, near the Canadian border. ICE spokesman David Yost said that the federal immigration enforcement agents carried out the raid “based on an ongoing criminal investigation into the unlawful employment of aliens without legal work authorization in violation of federal law.” Yost explained that the illegal aliens “fraudulently represented their immigration status and submitted fraudulent documents” or false information to gain employment. “They corralled us into a room in the back of the building. They had a list and pictures of everyone who was undocumented and took them away,” said Tomas Fuerte, who has been with the company for 12 years. The company says that it is “fully cooperating with the authorities while also ensuring that our employees are treated fairly and respectfully under the law.” With an estimated 18.6 million illegal aliens currently present in the United States, some immigration experts say that new policies could prevent illegal employment while also encouraging illegal aliens to self-deport. Congress could take action to prevent illegal aliens from illegally obtained employment by passing a national mandate for employers to use E-Verify, a free service from the Department of Homeland Security that allows businesses to check the legal status of applicants. “If employers were mandated to use E-Verify and the government demonstrated the resolve to hold employers accountable, that would go a long way toward drying up the supply of jobs for illegal aliens, thereby eliminating the biggest incentive to come or remain here illegally,” Federation for American Immigration Reform Media Director Ira Mehlman told The Daily Wire. The policy was also endorsed by Vice President JD Vance when he was a Senator. “E Verify might be the single most important immigration issue,” Vance asserted in 2022 while he was co-sponsoring legislation to mandate the program.

General Motors is planning to ramp up its production of light-duty trucks in the United States after President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on auto imports, Reuters reported on Thursday. In a message sent to employees, GM said it will increase the truck production at its assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The auto company based in Detroit said in a statement that it “will be making operational adjustments at Fort Wayne Assembly, including hiring temporary employees, to support current manufacturing and business needs,” according to The Detroit News. Plant Director Dennys Pimenta told employees that the change could add more overtime days to the schedule for workers, and a company source told Reuters that hundreds of temporary workers could get hired at the plant, which currently employs around 4,150 workers. GM’s plants in Canada and Mexico that also focus on making light-duty and full-size trucks will not see any changes to production schedules, a source told The Detroit News. Trump’s tariff on auto imports kicked in on Thursday after he announced it in the Oval Office last week. “What we’re going to be doing is a 25% tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States. If they are made in the United States, there is absolutely no tariff,” Trump said. The tariff will likely affect Canada and Mexico the most as U.S. car manufacturers have outsourced production of their vehicles to each of those countries. Canada’s second largest export is vehicles, and around 125,000 Canadians work directly in the automotive industry, the Associated Press reported. On Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to match the United States’ 25% auto tariff. “We take these measures reluctantly. And we take them in ways that is intended and will cause maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact in Canada,” Carney said. Trump recently credited tariffs for bringing manufacturing jobs to the United States after South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai announced a $21 billion investment in the country over the next four years. “This investment is a clear demonstration that tariffs very strongly work,” Trump said. “And I hope other things also, but the tariffs are bringing them in at levels that have not been witnessed.”

I’ll have more to say on the specifics in the next few days,” Golden said in a statement. “What I can say now is I’m pleased the president is building his tariff agenda on the foundation of a universal 10 percent tariff like the one I proposed in the BUILT USA Act,” he added. “This ring fence around the American economy is a good start to erasing our unsustainable trade deficits.” Many congressional Democrats have spent the past day criticizing the new tariffs, which impose rates up to 50% on imports from dozens of countries. “Trump’s tariffs are one of the dumbest decisions he has ever made as president—and that’s saying something,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a post on X. We do want to leave here with an understanding that we are on a pathway, a realistic pathway to every single one of the members committee, and fulfilling a promise to reach up to 5% of spending.” Rubio stated the United States would also spend 5% of its GDP on defense as well. “The majority of the 32 NATO members currently spend 2% of their nation’s GDP per previous NATO commitments, eight nations – Croatia, Portugal, Italy, Canada, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Spain – have yet to meet their defense spending pledges,” Fox News noted. “Only Poland spends over 4% of its GDP on defense, while four other nations spend over 3% – Estonia, the U.S., Latvia and Greece.” The United States spent 3.38% of its GDP on defense in 2024. “As we speak right now, the United States is as active in NATO as it has ever been,” Rubio said. “Some of this hysteria and hyperbole that I see in the global media and some domestic media in the United States about NATO is unwarranted. The United States president [has] made clear: He supports NATO. We’re going to remain in NATO.” Roughly 100,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Europe.
