Joy Reid Fawns Over Harris-Walz 'White Guy Taco' Video

MSNBC’s Joy Reid and her Friday guests could not control their laughter on The ReidOut at Kamala Harris and Tim Walz discussing the latter’s “white guy tacos” and subsequent GOP reaction. For Reid, the episode proved that they are “normal, relatable, and just downright fun and joyful people,” while their Republican counterparts are not. Reid led into the clip by claiming, “It is important to remember that you can have the best run campaign in the world, and none of it would matter if you don't have a great candidate. But that is exactly what the Democrats found with Kamala Harris, the energy and the momentum that she's been able to generate prove that she was built for this moment. And the contrast between her and Trump could not be more stark.”     She further claimed, “All of this is highlighted in a new video of Harris and Walz where the two are just having a sit-down conversation about their lives, food, and music, as well as the issues. Kind of like a TV talk show, Kamala and the Coach, catch it on Peacock or Hulu or Netflix. Proving again that unlike the golden toilet's washed up TV star and the hedge fund Yale-y woman hater, the Democratic candidates are normal, relatable, and just downright fun and joyful people.” In the video, Walz was seen claiming, “I think I have white guy tacos and—,” to which Harris asked, “What is that, like, mayonnaise and tuna? What are you doing?” After Walz replied, “Pretty much ground beef and cheese,” Harris wondered, “That's okay. Do you put any flavor in it?” only for Walz to reply, “No.” A second clip showed Walz admitting that when Harris called him with the job offer, he didn’t answer the phone, and the call went to voicemail. Reid then introduced her guests, “Alencia Johnson, senior adviser to the 2020 Biden-Harris campaign, and Rick Wilson, cofounder of the Lincoln Project and former Republican strategist.” Starting with Wilson, Reid shared some conservative reactions: “Mike Cernovich pointed to a 2016 award-winning recipe of Walz’s that included paprika, chili powder, and garlic powders like ‘they know spices.’ Conservative hate radio’s Larry O’Conner said, ‘It's like a minstrel show lampooning white Midwestern stereotypes.’” Losing the ability to speak coherently, she added, “Ben Shapiro felt the need to fact-check that ‘Europeans liked spices so much they literally got involved in several hundred years of war in order to determine control of the spice trade,’ and Senator Cruz put the capper on it, he said ‘Hispanics are not tacos.’ Rick, Rick. What is happening?” If it is weird for Republicans to criticize “white guy tacos” as a hypocritical exercise in racial and regional stereotyping, it is also weird for Reid and her colleagues to ooze with laughter over Walz’s taco preferences as proof he is a better candidate than JD Vance. Not that Wilson saw the problem, for he was also greatly amused, “Joy, these people, their brains are so broken. Their brains are so broken at this point, I mean, they're literally spending millions of hours panicking about Tim Walz's bland taco recipe.” Wilson also claimed that, “this is a party that is so broken brained, that is so completely off the rails, they're in such a deep panic, by next week, they're going to, like, wonder if he's gotten -- if his breakfast cereal is approved by some sort of Midwestern board of blandness. They are in a panic, Joy. This, I am eating this up with a spoon because these people are absolutely hopeless. They have got nothing. They got nothing.” Apparently, neither does Reid if she thinks taco segments are going to win Democrats the election. Here is a transcript for the August 16 show: MSNBC The ReidOut 8/16/2024 7:05 PM ET JOY REID: But even so, it is important to remember that you can have the best run campaign in the world, and none of it would matter if you don't have a great candidate. But that is exactly what the Democrats found with Kamala Harris, the energy and the momentum that she's been able to generate prove that she was built for this moment. And the contrast between her and Trump could not be more stark.  And she doubled that by doing something kind of revolutionary, just picking a running mate she vibes with while Trump and Vance are rarely even seen together.  All of this is highlighted in a new video of Harris and Walz where the two are just having a sit-down conversation about their lives, food, and music, as well as the issues. Kind of like a TV talk show, Kamala and the Coach, catch it on Peacock or Hulu or Netflix. Proving again that unlike the golden toilet's washed up TV star and the hedge fund Yale-y woman hater, the Democratic candidates are normal, relatable, and just downright fun and joyful people. TIM WALZ: I think I have white guy tacos and— KAMALA HARRIS: What is that, like, mayonnaise and tuna? What are you doing? WALZ: Pretty much ground beef and cheese. HARRIS: That's okay. Do you put any flavor in it? WALZ: No. Here's the deal. [jump cut] HARRIS: I called you, Tim. I called you, Tim. WALZ: Yes. HARRIS: You didn't answer, Tim. WALZ: I know, I know. HARRIS: What happened? WALZ: The most important call of my life, it popped up and we didn't recognize the caller ID and it went to voicemail. REID: Joining me now is Alencia Johnson, senior adviser to the 2020 Biden-Harris campaign, and Rick Wilson, cofounder of the Lincoln Project, and former Republican strategist.  I cannot not go to Rick. I’m sorry, normally I would ladies first, but Rick, this calls to you. I mean, look, this is how the Republicans -- your former team, because look, you used to run some pretty bomb ads. You're really good at this. I know you're good at campaigning.  This is how conservatives are reacting to Harris and Walz talking about food and white guy tacos. Mike Cernovich pointed to a 2016 award winning recipe of Walz’s that included paprika, chili powder, and garlic powders like “they know spices.” Conservative hate radio’s Larry O’Conner said, “it's like a minstrel show lampooning white Midwestern stereotypes.”  Ben Shapiro felt the need to fact-check that “Europeans liked spices so much they literally got involved in several hundred years of war in order to determine control of the spice trade,” and Senator Cruz put the capper on it, he said “Hispanics are not tacos.” Rick, Rick. What is happening? RICK WILSON: Joy, these people, their brains are so broken. Their brains are so broken at this point, I mean, they're literally spending millions of hours panicking about Tim Walz's bland taco recipe.  You know, this is a party that is so broken brained, that is so completely off the rails, they're in such a deep panic, by next week, they're going to, like, wonder if he's gotten -- if his breakfast cereal is approved by some sort of Midwestern board of blandness. They are in a panic, Joy. This, I am eating this up with a spoon because these people are absolutely hopeless. They have got nothing. They got nothing.

Why do we love 'Twisters'? Call it the Maverick effect

Talk about a whirlwind summer. After a lackluster April and May, the box office came roaring back to life with monster hits like "Inside Out 2" and "Deadpool & Wolverine." While those two installments did even better than expected — "Inside Out 2" is now the top-grossing animated film of all time, and "Deadpool & Wolverine" just raked in a cool billion — maybe the biggest surprise of the season is "Twisters." No superheroes or Jedi warriors; just regular Americans showing up and doing their duty. Much like one of the titular tornados Glen Powell and crew chase down, the disaster flick's success seemed to come out of nowhere. In retrospect, it makes sense that audiences would flock to this highly belated sequel to 1996's "Twister." A non-woke, thrilling blockbuster for all ages, with likeable movie stars portraying likeable characters; big, edge-of-your-seat action sequences; and a story with heart? Take our money. But there’s another reason for all the love: a little factor I like to call the Maverick effect. Allow me to explain. Two summers ago, ticket sales soared into the stratosphere with the release of another sequel decades in the making: "Top Gun: Maverick." While "Maverick" has all the virtues I just extolled in "Twisters," there's a little something else both movies share, besides the rising star power of Glen Powell: American pride. It's a bit more understated than the over-the-top patriotism of '80s classics like "Rambo" or "Rocky IV," and that's what's so appealing about it. That is to say, both films depict real people doing real things and turn it into epic cinema. Whether they're flying jets at Mach 9 speeds or chasing storms in the untraveled farmlands of Oklahoma, these people are ultimately just doing their jobs. Where they do those jobs also matters: "Maverick" at the North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego, where brave men and women serve this country over seas and skies; and "Twisters" in the fictional Midwestern everytown of Wakita, Oklahoma. Both settings respectfully evoke the kind of hardworking American communities not often seen on the big screen. No superheroes or Jedi warriors; just regular Americans showing up and doing their duty. You might say Tom Cruise takes a similar workmanlike approach to his job as a movie star, even if does involve hanging off of the side of a plane or climbing the world's tallest building. And it's clearly rubbed off on his protégé, Powell. Like Cruise before him, the younger star is open about his desire to entertain the "vast parts of America that have been underserved in terms of movies that they want to see.” Clearly, if you serve them, they will come. Hollywood isn’t known for learning the right lessons from its successes (or its failures), but here’s hoping that the powers that be catch on to the Maverick effect and its endless potential for driving American audiences back to the cinemas.
