Godsmack’s 10 Best Songs
Godsmack, a name lifted from an Alice In Chains’ song, have released eight studio albums.
“Faceless” (’03), “IV,” (’06) and “The Oracle” (’10) were three consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard 200. The band has also had over a dozen songs top the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

10. Something Different (1000hp – 2014)
Written by frontman Sully Erna, the song was the second single from the band’s sixth studio album and reached #6 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
9. Keep Away (Godsmack – 1998)
Another Erna composition. He described the song as being “about hope — hope to get the bitch out of my life”.
8. Greed (Awake – 2000)
Erna stated that the accompanying music video “has the band living in a rundown apartment owned by a rich, unsympathetic landlord, The group finally has enough of their poor living conditions and tramples the landlord at the end of the video, leaving him in a humorous slump in his underwear.”
Erna added that it was their attempt at fitting in with the more mainstream music video crowd and that he was not pleased with it.
7. Straight Out Of Line (Faceless – 2003)
The song shot to #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. It also received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance, but the award went to Evanescence for “Bring Me To Life.”
6. Bulletproof (When Legends Rise – 2018)
“I always write about things that have affected me on an emotional level… But if I choose to do that, I have to be prepared to be honest and vulnerable,” shared Erna. “And so the challenge is figuring out how ‘exposed’ you want to be with personal information. I’ve also learnt over the years that, for me, being transparent, even to the point of embarrassment sometimes, is so much better than holding it inside.”
5. Cryin’ Like A Bitch!! (The Oracle – 2010)
“It’s a really tough song, very tough song, very tough riff, the drums are very aggressive and tight, the whole groove just had an edge to it, so not only did the lyrical content match the music very well, but it also just made me feel it just needed to be a gang, a gang enhancement on the chorus,” explained Erna.
4. Whatever (Godsmack -1998)
The song was written by Erna and guitarist Tony Rombola.
“That’s Sully’s answer to his girlfriend when we were going through the whole struggle between rehearsing five nights a week, playing on the weekends and trying to keep a relationship going at the same time,” stated Rombola. “We were really starting to take off, and it’s hard to go through a relationship with a girl and have a band take all your time, plus we worked regular jobs.”
3. Voodoo (Godsmack -1998)
Written by Erna and bassist Robbie Merrill, the music video shows witches performing a ritual with swords. The band is shown throughout the video playing in a corn field. The track went platinum (1-million units moved through physical, digital, and streaming formats) in the U.S.
2. I Stand Alone (Faceless – 2003)
“It turned out that “The Scorpion King” director Chuck Russell was a fan of Godsmack and wanted to use our song “Voodoo” in the movie,” noted Erna. “Because the song was a little dated, he wanted me to redo it, and I wasn’t really up for that. Instead, I submitted some new music I had written ‘I Stand Alone’.”

“That’s me getting closure on a relationship,” Erna reflected. “I’m just saying that now I’m awake, and I’m able to deal with everything I have to deal with. Where before I felt like I was going to lose control without this person in my life. I’m saying that I’m okay now without that person”
The song went to #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, their first single to do so, and remained on the chart for 53 weeks,
