Ireland No More, Soon, Another Third World Hellhole

Ireland is unrecognizable. I am part Irish descent. I am glad I was in Ireland several times to see it as it was 173 years before, when my mother’s family fled due to the potato famine and the British attacks.  A Lord now lives on the land that once belonged to my ancestors. It had […] The post Ireland No More, Soon, Another Third World Hellhole appeared first on www.independentsentinel.com.

Cat Lore: Colors and Personality

Column SFF Bestiary Cat Lore: Colors and Personality From ginger goofiness to tortoiseshell “catitude”, every coat has its stereotype… By Judith Tarr | Published on January 26, 2026 “My Wife’s Lovers” by Carl Kahler (1893) Comment 0 Share New Share “My Wife’s Lovers” by Carl Kahler (1893) In cat world, it is known: Coat color determines personality. According to the lore, tabbies are nice all-around cats, black cats—aka voids—are darkly mysterious but also sweet and kind (and the gene that gives them their black coat also seems to enhance the immune system—which, wow), grey cats are calm and a little aloof, white cats are reserved and shy (and often deaf), black-and-whites are big snugglers, all-color cats (tortoiseshells and calicos) have extra helpings of cattitude, and orange or ginger cats are mellow and friendly. Individual mileage varies widely, of course, and the science is a long way from catching up with the anecdata. Not to mention the power of the self-fulfilling prophecy (I expect my cat to be a certain way, so I unconsciously tailor my interactions accordingly) and the addition of breed traits into the mix. Purebred cats are selectively bred for certain traits, which may or may not be enhanced by the traits associated with the individual cat’s color. Maine Coon as gentle giant with a tiny chirping voice, Siamese (with its strikingly unusual coat) as loud and opinionated prima donna. Let’s pause for a minute and look at that Siamese coat. Siamese are born white or cream, but as they grow, their extremities become progressively darker. This is called temperature-sensitive albinism, or point restriction. They carry a gene that restricts the production of pigment to cooler areas of the body, particularly the legs, nose, ears, and tail. The warmer parts of the body may darken over time, but much less intensely. What color the points are depends on the cat’s basic color genetics, the point-restriction gene determines how and where the color appears. All cats, Siamese included, carry the color gene in the X chromosome. This gene will be some variation on red or black, and more rarely white (either dominant white or albino). The tabby pattern comes from the agouti gene, which modifies the basic red or black. For further cool points, black can be solid, but red is always some form of agouti. I can confirm that from local data. The calico kitten whom I’m typing around, with her Impressionist-painting coat in shades of black and orange with white paws and bib, has a plethora of black patches, all of them solid, but her larger orange patches (versus her numerous brushtroke bits) are boldly striped. She has a lot going on in the color department. When she was tiny, the lady who fostered her for the cat rescue thought she might be a boy. It can be hard to tell with very young kittens. As it turns out, she’s definitely a she, and that’s what most black-and-orange cats are, because each color is carried in a separate X chromosome. The tortie-calico continuum is fascinating not just for the wide variation in how it manifests. You can’t clone a tortie. Even identical twins won’t be identical in their color patterns, because each individual cell activates or inactivates its color gene in random fashion. The tortie in front of you is unique. Every tortie or calico activates the colors in a different way. A clone is normally produced from a single cell. That cell will contain either the red or the black, but not both. The clone, as a result, will not be a tortie or a calico. She’ll be some variation on either black or ginger. Male calicos (with white) and torties (without) certainly exist, though they’re rare. Genetically they’re XXY, and they’re nearly always sterile—a condition called Klinefelter syndrome. The other side of the tortie-color coin (and personality) is the orange or ginger cat. Most gingers are male. The red gene is recessive, and a male with only one X chromosome will be red if he has the gene, whereas a female has to have two red genes in order to manifest the red. Otherwise she’s a tortie or a calico. Torties, the lore will tell you, are complicated creatures. They have extra helpings of attitude. They’re sassy, often hissy, and famously opinionated. There’s even a name for it: tortitude. As a friend said to me about one of my two (I am a brave or foolish soul: I have both a tortie and a calico), “Of course she’s opinionated, it’s hard work to coordinate all those colors.” Gingers on the other hand are renowned for their friendly dispositions. They’re the mellow cats, the laid-back, let’s-get-along guys. Your ginger will drape happily over your arm or let you wear him like a purry boa. He may be sparing of his energy, and he’ll have a healthy appreciation for food. Some will tell you gingers are more trainable than most cats. Others will declare that there is one brain cell shared among all gingers. They take turns. You’ll know when it’s your ginger’s turn: he will, for that brief shining moment, show visible signs of intelligence. Personally I think that’s unfair to ginger cats. I’ve had a ginger who was basically a huge furry watermelon (his vet-approved fighting weight was not to go below fifteen pounds/7kg), and a couple who were wonderfully cuddly and quite bright. But I agree with the anecdata: ginger boys have a little something extra when it comes to sociability. How about you, cat fans? Have you found a correlation between cat color and personality? Does your cat fit the standard description, or are they totally and distinctively their own self? Not that every cat isn’t itself first and always. That’s the first rule of cat magic.[end-mark] The post Cat Lore: Colors and Personality appeared first on Reactor.

Trump Deploys Border Czar to Minnesota Following Deadly Shooting

President Donald Trump is sending border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota two days after a Border Patrol agent shot and killed an anti-immigration enforcement protester.  Homan “has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday, referring to Minnesota.    “Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me,” the president added.  ?President Trump is sending border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota tonight. “Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me.” pic.twitter.com/q5Ym6YgAxG— Virginia Allen (@Virginia_Allen5) January 26, 2026 Trump’s announcement follows reports of divisions in immigration enforcement and homeland security over the characterization of the shooting of 37-year-old nurse Alex J. Pretti that took place in Minneapolis Saturday.   Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Pretti “approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. The officers attempted to disarm the suspect, but the armed suspect violently resisted. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots.”  Noem referred to Pretti as a “domestic terrorist,” and DHS claimed in a post on X that he “wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.”   At 9:05 AM CT, as DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault, an individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, seen here. The officers attempted to… pic.twitter.com/5Y50mYONGH— Homeland Security (@DHSgov) January 24, 2026 Video of the incident appears to conflict with the initial accounts of Noem and DHS.   A viral video of the incident shows Pretti filming immigration officers during an operation. When he appeared to intervene after officers shoved a female protester to the ground, several officers attempted to take Pretti into custody. While Pretti appears to be on the ground resisting arrest, a Border Patrol agent draws and fires his weapon.   Pretti had no previous criminal record, and had obtained a conceal carry permit for his handgun. Following the shooting, some Republicans and federal immigration officials reportedly expressed concern over the actions of immigration enforcement and the agency’s response. “This is a real tragedy, and I think the death of Americans, what we’re seeing on TV, it’s causing deep concerns over federal tactics and accountability,” Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican, said on CNN following the shooting.   Republican Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt tells Dana Bash that “Americans don’t like what they’re seeing” in Minnesota: “[Trump] is getting bad advice right now… What is the endgame? I don't think it's to deport every single non-U.S. citizen." pic.twitter.com/IjyTdGHhck— State of the Union (@CNNSOTU) January 25, 2026 Fox News congressional correspondent and longtime border reporter Bill Melugin said he spoke to about a dozen federal immigration sources, who he reported “have grown increasingly uneasy [and] frustrated [with] some of the claims [and] narratives DHS pushed in the aftermath of the shooting.”   “Specifically, I’m told there is extreme frustration with DHS officials going on TV and putting out statements claiming that Alex Pretti was intending to conduct a ‘massacre’ of federal agents or wanted to carry out ‘maximum damage’, even after numerous videos appeared to show those claims were inaccurate,” Melugin reports.   The shooting of Pretti comes just over two weeks after an ICE-involved shooting on Jan. 7 that killed 37-year-old Renee Good.  Good, according to Noem, attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon against the ICE agent. Some eyewitnesses and Democrat officials disputed that account, saying Good attempted to drive away from agents.   Anti-immigration enforcement protests have continued in Minnesota since the Trump administration announced it was surging ICE agents into the Twin Cities, but protests have increased since Good’s death.   Trump and Homan have a history of working together on border and immigration issues that predates Homan’s time as border czar.   Homan’s border security career began in the 1980s, when he joined the agency before going on to serve in Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In 2017, Trump appointed Homan acting director of ICE. At Trump’s request, Homan returned to Washington in 2025 to serve as Trump’s border czar.   The post Trump Deploys Border Czar to Minnesota Following Deadly Shooting appeared first on The Daily Signal.

No Trans Dissent Allowed: Letitia James Fires Lesbian Who Dared to Warn Against Child Mutilation

Some Democrats realize they have a problem with transgender orthodoxy, but not New York Attorney General Letitia James—she’s doubling down. Last week, she fired Glenna Goldis, the assistant attorney general at the Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau, apparently for the crime of expressing concern about the mutilation of children. Goldis announced her departure in a lengthy post on X. She claimed James fired her “for speaking out against pediatric gender medicine.” “James supports ‘transitioning’ kids with puberty blockers, hormones, and surgery,” Goldis noted. “She sued the federal government to protect the [pediatric gender medicine] industry from investigations and funding cuts. And she argued (dubiously) that doctors who decline to offer [pediatric gender medicine] are liable for ‘discrimination.'” Goldis rightly expressed concern that when the medical industry endorses experimental transgender medical interventions for minors—what the Left has euphemistically termed “gender-affirming care” and President Donald Trump’s administration has more accurately called “sex-rejecting procedures“—that arguably involves a “dangerous consumer fraud.” Today I was fired by NY Attorney General Letitia James for speaking out against pediatric gender medicine (PGM).James supports "transitioning" kids with puberty blockers, hormones, and surgery. She sued the federal government to protect the PGM industry from investigations and…— Glenna Goldis (@glennagoldis) January 22, 2026 Transgender Consumer Fraud? When a doctor diagnoses a minor with “gender dysphoria”—the painful and persistent condition of identifying with the gender opposite one’s sex—the doctor may go on to prescribe “puberty blockers” (drugs that law enforcement uses to chemically castrate sex offenders), cross-sex hormones (which often cause permanent interventions in a person’s body to make them appear like the opposite sex), or surgeries to remove breasts or genitals. (Advocates assure Americans that minors do not undergo such surgery, but one study revealed that at least 3,500 minors have gone under the knife.) The Department of Health and Human Services has determined that there is “extremely weak evidence” for any positive impact of such interventions, while the harms are real, obvious, and concrete. Detransitioners—those who previously identified as transgender but reverted to identifying with their biological sex—like Chloe Cole, Prisha Mosley, and Simon Price have shared horrific stories about how these interventions harmed them, trying to prevent others from suffering the same experience. Detransitioners have started filing lawsuits against the medical providers who urged them to mutilate their bodies, and attorneys estimate that these lawsuits could yield settlements of $10 million. Goldis’ concerns are very real, and quite warranted—regardless of your position on these interventions. James would have been wise to listen to her. ‘Treated Me Like a Pest’ Instead, she says, “James’s officials treated me like a pest.” Goldis said that the general counsel identified an objectionable line in her blog—a line where Goldis merely restated the opinion in U.S. v. Skrmetti, where the Supreme Court rightly held that it is not unconstitutional discrimination to protect minors from these interventions. While the New York Attorney General’s ethics chief warned Goldis that it was unethical to take public legal positions that conflict with James’, Goldis claimed the Rule of Professional Conduct stated no such thing. By the way, Goldis isn’t some right-wing conservative nutjob. She’s a lesbian, a “member of the LGBTQ community” that James purports to champion. Goldis says her “social circles are full of progressive lawyers,” who “tend to be leery” of pediatric gender medicine. Goldis also expressed a concern I’ve been hearing for years from feminist lesbians—transgender ideology is homophobic in practice because it encourages young people who might otherwise identify as gay or lesbian that they’re “really” straight and members of the opposite sex. Goldis stops short of calling transgender medicine a form of “conversion therapy,” but she does note that it may be “homophobic.” Goldis told The New York Post that she’s in contact with First Amendment lawyers and is considering a lawsuit. “The Office of the Attorney General has rules and protocols for employees who engage in activities that can impact the work, operations, or integrity of the office,” a James spokesperson told the Post. “This former employee’s flagrant and repeated disregard of these rules and protocols disrupted and undermined our efforts to protect the rights of all New Yorkers.” Whether Goldis sues or not, the firing underscores how much of a liability the transgender issue is for Democrats. By firing Goldis, James isn’t just silencing opposition to her radical transgender agenda—she’s preventing an ally from providing an important wake-up call about the need to think of transgender “medicine” as a form of consumer fraud. It is consumer fraud, and it is absolutely shameful that Letitia James would rather fire Glenna Goldis than face that difficult truth.
